About 30 years ago I remember going through Bangkok airport with a friend and his parents. There was a Huey displayed in the centre of the area once you'd checked-in. My friend's dad stopped and just stayed there staring at the helicopter. It was the one he had flown in Vietnam decades earlier. The memory of that moment has stayed with me since.
I was 8 mate, I remember most things. Never been back but I have been itching too . Probably because I was only 8 and only remember a few places that I visited during my childhood. One place was Turtle lake and where I used to live. I have seen videos of both places now since many of my siblings have been back to VN. I have been to Thailand many times though@@JBWanders73
Bless you; a life shaping experience I'm sure, but good that it had a happy ending for you and your family. I hope you do go back for a visit mate. When you pass back through the Land of Smiles, I'd be more than happy to take you for a wander or a drive and show you a few spots although I guess you probably know a few yourself ✌🙏
@@brucewayne2773 VN is right at the top of my list for this region too. I've been to Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia but I'd like to travel their for a least a month.... I'm sure we can meet and we will have some laughs for sure mate
Great old stuff. I have a buddy that's in his 70s . I'm going to watch this with him. He was a mechanic working on Hueys with the Army then. My uncle was on a Aircraft carrier working on whatever landed on deck. They may have worked on some of those old Hueys. That's the advantage of having the old paint jobs still on them. The guys that are still around may recognize it and can give some history. I was born in 1968 and admired them from home. My family survived WWII in the Netherlands and mom worried about Uncle John going on that carrier. His ship made life magazine with a picture of a jet crashing on deck in a ball of fire. Lucky he went bellow about 20 minutes before off duty time. He would have been burned up. I'm Lucky to still have him, and so is his family.
It sure would be great if I could find a crew member as the artwork is pretty recognisable. I interviewed an 86 year old American recently who was an aircraft mechnic but mostly on Bells. He left the Marines as was recruited by the CIA in 1961 to join Air America. He ended up working as a 'civilian' in Vietnam, Laos and Iran 'undercover' - quite a character by the name of Dirty Jim. Wow, that sounds like quite the photo!! Cheers mate.
Was in Vietnam in 67 &68. The hueys in the video appear to be D models primarily used for troop carriers, dust off, or cargo delivery. C models were more for gunships.
The music is the "Ride of the Valkyries" (German: Walkürenritt or Ritt der Walküren) and refers to the beginning of act 3 of Die Walküre, the second of the four epic music dramas constituting Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen.

Stunning. Would it not be great if the original crew would be able to identify and claim the helicopters as the ones the flew in.
That would be amazing... Let's hope a few people share it Chris

Those Hueys sure have a lot of cargo room, that's how I got to the airport back in the 70's from the US Embassy in VN when we left for Guam mate.
Oh!! How old were you when that happened mate? I'd imagine very young!? Do you remember much about it? Sorry to pry but have you ever been back to VN?

OK, thanks for the info. So, these choppers were real work horses then!? Thanks for your service Sir.

Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) there was a bunch of them over there, these look restorable...
Cheers for the info. I'd love to restore one!
Granddad's unit used "Ride of the Valkyries" as their theme song first! LOL , No2 Commando/II SAS X-Troop Operation Colossus February 10, 1941 ..
Oh!! That's a very cool fact! I wonder if Francis Ford Coppola was aware of the history of the song when he decided to use it?

Had to add that stupid music when you were trying to talk
Is Ride of the Valkyries "stupid"? Or was it played during the most famous scene involving these helicopters?

Copyright? It was first performed in 1870 😂 Aren't you the bright spark 😂
The music wasn’t necessary. Neither was the commentary. Awful.
🤣 🤣 Talking of unnecessary commentary..... why don't you go there yourself my dear young chap? Make sure you have a lovely day x
