I'll never forget this day. I was doing (my first) Dopey Challenge during this weekend. I remember when the news came out that they cancelled the half, I was just shocked. However, like you, I needed to run anyway in order to be able to accept my Half medal. Unfortunately I was staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, which is pretty secluded... so I did my 13.1 on the resort treadmill with quite a few other folks. There was actually a line waiting for the treadmills however no one waiting huffed or puffed, despite standing in line for 30+ minutes. There was a silent understanding because everyone knew how important this was to each of us. I wish, though. That I was over in your neck of the woods do I could run outside with others, however I was very happy to get my miles in and accept my medals. Your videos are great and though I just stumbled upon them, I enjoy watching them. Please keep up the great work!
I wish there was something better than a thumbs up I could give this video. This brought actual tears to my eyes. I’m in awe of the dedication of all of the runners and of the people who came out to cheer you on. It’s Disney Magic in its purest form. Thanks for sharing!
This morning was my all time greatest race experience..I was signed up for Dopey - and so disappointed in the canceled race --but then I started seeing the runners out and about ( I was at French Quarter) and I got out there and was so overcome with emotion seeing HUNDREDS running between Riverside and French Quarter, the resorts put out a small water stop, there were people out there cheering for us, high-fives and they even set up a small finish area --it was amazing to see the negativity from the night before turn into on of the most upliftin positive runs I've ever been on -
I totally agree with you. The races are one thing ... but the morning of the cancelled race seemed a bit "Magical." The clouds and breeze ... a bit of rain and a chill in the air added to people running all over Disney World and many others cheering an "imaginary" race. It's another runDisney memory I will cherish.
So much fun to watch your half experience! I was running my half around Hourglass Lake at Art of Animation that morning. We earned that Goofy medal! Good job!
This was great! You made a very disappointing situation into something amazing. I loved seeing all the other runners out there! The running community is truly amazing! on the Let's Run Disney Podcast it almost seemed like you didn't think you earned your medal, well I say you did!
Thanks Marci. You know those childhood memories .. the ones that makes your heart swell and your mind whir? These Disney races continue to make me feel like that ... each one is a special memory. Maybe, it's just being at Disney! I should stop saying I didn't earn them. You are right. I put in 400 miles training for Goofy ... so they were definitely earned.
It was so sad to hear they canceled the Half due to weather. If I'd been registered and trained for it I would have been so disappointed that I'm sure I would have cried. Kudos to you for wanting to "earn" that medal by going out for a run anyway. It looked like several others felt the same and gave you some company. I can't wait to see your marathon! Good job!!
Marathon vid is on the way. It's loooooooong. I'm keeping it to about a mile/minute. You would have been impressed at the hundreds (if not thousands) who went out and ran inthe rain to Earn their Donald medals.
A HUGE thank you for the video! I still have tears in my eyes, but not just from the cancelation of the race, but knowing I was not alone in my sadness. I, too, got some running in, with my biggest challenge of running from the Disney shuttle bus, all the way to Space Mountain in time to use my FastPass! Don't forget, I had to go through security and admissions! I call that the Main Street Sprint!
Yes! I did a search of "stabilized gimbal run Disney" and found this, and it's a TREAT! Great video, I learned that the half medals were still awarded, and I assume anyone with a multi-race challenge was still allowed to get their Goofy or Dopey. Awesome pace, too! And now that I see how much better a running video can look, I will be getting a gimbal for myself. And I loved your work adding in the songs, miles map, and more. I'll be watching this again multiple times.
My husband and I were there to run our first marathon. It was so inspirational seeing all the runners earn their medals. It was awesome to see the spectators out cheering. The running community is a great group of people. I found your channel as my husband I are now training for Dopey 2018.
I cried too, so it's nice hearing that other runners felt emotional. the good news for me is that I got to switch my registration to the dark side in April. I've ( shockingly) never seen Star Wars, so now I'll have to give myself a crash course :) Great job on the improvised half!
Yay ... I'll be doing my second Dark Side. keep an eye out. You've got to watch Star Wars now. You'll like the music and movies they play on the course. BTW ~ I'm emotional anyway. You've got to love the roller coaster that is life. I teared-up between Miles 25 and 26 during the Marathon.
So crazy that we were just over at the Beach Club! Sorry I missed you out there...solid and smart effort, my friend. Nice recap, and explanation of the "why" behind the cancellation.
Thank you Heather. I try. I still think you explain things better. I may take a cue from your format for my Dopey Challenge training this summer. Total respect. These things aren't easy ...
So true! What's funny is that I changed my format a little to look a little like your video...just an experiment, though...I don't have all the fun GoPro gadgets ;-)
I used the gadgets to mask the fact I can't read anything. It wold be nice to sit with notes and actually have more to say. LOL I usually have to memorize everything. It's not easy. Just buy a little at a time. You could do like Laura over at Joyful Miles. Get an inexpensive gimbal for your smartphone. I actually think the smartphone video is superior to GoPro. As for the format ! I was weighing whether I was doing it for the awesome runners who watch or for me. I think it's for me. Toward the end of the Goofy training plan, I started getting a bit bored with doing the same thing over and over.
I was supposed to run a marathon in Dallas in April. The marathon got cancelled due to thund wt storms, but they did allow us to run the half marathon. There were a couple of close lightning strikes..got soaked bad but did the half marathon....
Wow ... I can't believe they still ran the Half with lightning int he area. Not a fany of running in the rain ... but it happens. You've go to feel for the race organizers ... all of the money collected ... those waivers that say "No Refunds." It's not easy to switch races to different weekends ... with permitting and volunteer needs. I hope you still had fun on your run.
Love your videos. They are motivating me for my training for the wine and dine 10k this year. My first Disney race. You should make a video of tips and expectations for first time Disney runners.
That's awesome. There's a soft spot in my heart for this race because it was my first Half! Fingers crossed for decent weather AND temperatures. Happy training. See you there.
I was there to! I was suppose to run it but i ran around the boardwalk , only 7 miles. haven't been able to hang the medal on my medal rack. It just reminds me of how sad i was it was canceled
Congrats getting in the 7! I know what you mean about the medal. It and the Goofy just don't seem "earned." However, I am sure you put in the months and months and months of training like I did. So ~ we did earn them.
Great to see the friendship among fellow runners, despite the disappointing cancel. We learned of the announcement only after stepping foot on property on Sat afternoon - but in hindsight the weather predictions included overnight thunder & lightening (as I was watching closely for Sunday's marathon). Congrats on prep run.
Seeing that I was only signed up for the Half this time around and I was coming back for Dark Side a couple months later....I may have ended up in a moonshine bar yelling "13.1 shots" instead of going out and doing the mileage.
BTW, that whole weekend, between the fast walk at the airports, my run from All Star Sports to Movies, picking up my packets and then medal, and walking/running through Epcot and Magic Kingdom, I was able to total 19.9 miles according to my iPhone!!!!! You are very uplifting!!!
Thank you! I can't believe that was only 19.9 miles ... it sounds like 50! LOL They really do keep us moving ... and then when you add in all of the extra "fun" stuff.... the miles add up! Good job :)
sorry to see that your race was cancelled. I've been watching/listening to your videos all day. currently getting ready for the Disney Super hero half marathon. I see that you are a p90x and body beast fan, so am I. Completed all 3 P90X :D. which headphones do you use ? ...I Subscribed :)
Did you get some sleep? I use the Plantronics BackBeat Fit. They're awesome .. waterproof/light weight. Love P90X and Body Beast. You sound as motivated as me, but they do help. Lately I've been taking hat I learned in those routines and just "mashig-up" my own thing. I am very jealous. Super Heroes is the one runDisney race I really want to do. With Dopey and Paris '18 ... I'm going to have to wait for a while. Good Luck training.
did you redo this video? I thought you used the music from soaring with this footage. in both cases I cried at the two ladies with their cowbells cheering you on. how awesome!!
This is the "long" version. The first video was simply a 4 minute preview of this run and a 6 minute r\preview of the full marathon. Soarin' is at the end of this video. Those two women were sweet. The Mom was their with her daughter to cheer on her 21 year old son who was doing Dopey. She was out again during the Marathon outside of Wide World of Sports.
Hi!! i'm running the wine and dine half marathon on november 5th! i'm very excited but nervous since this is my first half marathon ever. I was wondering, what do you eat before the race? I'm not sure what to eat since the race starts at 5:30am. thank you so much!
Great question Samantha. On "shorter" run," 10K .. etc I typically don't eat. On longer runs, I keep snacks in the room .. especially because we get up a 3 AM. Bananas, mini muffins ... coffee, juice. I don't over do it ... because I don't want to feel sick before the race ... I also grab a bottle of water and gatorade for the bus ride and corral wait.
I'm a huge Donald Duck fan and that medal is so adorable. Any recommendations on people who gave up exercise to find a motivation to start all over again?

That's some motivation... And that back entrance to EPCOT shot at 5:04 made me go "damn, that's so smooth!"
Thanks. Here's my recipe: GoPro/gimbal PLUS Adobe Premiere Pro "Warp Stabilization" = smooth like butter (or Butta!) :)

Homecoming at Disney Springs!
I love that shirt on you. That's my favorite!

9:25 warning about how cold it will become for Marathon '17 morning/start. Prescient.

Yeah I posted the comment before I watched the longer version to the end. How cool of them to come and support him! that's fantastic
you are such an inspiration. I love your videos!
You're very kind. Thank you. I'm just pushing myself. It motivates me that you and others feel inspired ...
Good for you! There are lots of place on the 1/2 course people could have been in danger from lightning.
Thanks. ... I agree. It gets crowded out there.
