I watched this race off an anntenna tv hooked up to the phone charger slot in the back of a minivan while camping in Maine. There were chairs set up and all that. Just brings me back.
I remember being VERY underwhelmed by this race when I first saw it. Probably because it had to live up to the previous 2 Daytona night races. Seriously, smaller fuel cells on superspeedways were a BAAAAD idea.
I was at this race. I had a blast my favorite driver Ricky Rudd finished third. I was hooping and hollering and even got the Dale Jr fans celebrating with me. This was back in the day when you had forestretch seating and backstretch seating at Daytona.
First time seeing this race, was nice to see Greg's cup win. All in all it was good racing all night. Hopefully Daytona will be just as exciting, or even better this year.
kinda funny looking back on this race and hearing them talk about using smaller fuel cells to try and break the big packs up, to reduce the huge wrecks. now they are banning two car tandems so the cars will run in packs in an effort to reduce some of the late race carnage. i wish i could go up to nascar and say it doesnt matter wtf the rules are shits gonna happen regardless lol.
Shane Hmeil qualified the Berry Burst Cheerios Dodge but missed the show. A really cool paint scheme in my opinion, whenever I'm playing Thunder 2004 and can't decide who to play as, I either go as Kenseth or that purple & red Dodge.
Drivers over 40: 17; Drivers under 30: 9; Oldest: Ken Schrader (48); Youngest: Ryan Newman (24) Drivers by State: 5 each from California, Missouri, and Virginia, 3 each from Kentucky, North Carolina, and Texas, 2 each from Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, and New York, and 1 each from Arkansas, Florida, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Manufactures breakdown are as follows: 14 Chevrolets, 14 Dodges, 10 Fords, and 5 Pontiacs. 2 Dodges and 2 Chevrolets failed to qualify for the event. Shane Hmiel, and Brazilian Christian Fittipaldi were in Dodges driving for Petty Enterprises. And Tony Raines and Kerry Earnhardt the older brother to Dale Jr were in Chevrolets. 14 Dodges and 14 Chevrolets would outnumber the 10 Fords and 5 Pontiacs. So it was 28 vs 15.
The end of the gen 4 was probably the best just bc the gen 4 was around so long, the package for that car was perfect almost for every track they go to.
I was sitting on the backstretch for this race, total snoozer, I was born and raised and still live 20 mins west of Daytona International Speedway. First race I went to was the 1997 Busch Clash when I was 9 years old. This was the most boring race I've seen at Daytona lol
I am still dumbfounded that Gordon pitted on that last caution and then pitted again under green with Johnson and Harvick when he could have been running with Biffle and Labonte for the win.
Jeff and Jimmie we're right there with Dale Jr, Michael Waltrip and Harvick majority of the race. So had the yellow came out those guys would be fighting for the win instead of Biffle and Bobby.
@@jackpierce1724 the thing that surprised me about the big wreck here was that Mark Martin avoided it. In almost all the big wrecks that take place at Daytona and Talladega Mark Martin is a name you’ll always hear that is involved. Mark has a history of bad luck at Daytona and Talladega.
Weird race. Greg Biffle won the race but it was really kind of strange that the usual suspects weren't up there at the end. The smaller fuel cells kind of brought the competition closer but left it up to the pit crews but it really didn't break up the packs.
How so? Next race they finished 1 2 with Waltrip winning. Then in 2004 they won the Daytona 500. Should have won Talladega spring event if not for that bogus call in favor of Gordon when DEI was clearly the best all day. Now the 2004 PEPSI 400 was the actual FIRST RACE since the 2001 Talladega 500 that DEI was straight up beat fair and square. But then in the 2004 EA Sports 500 Dale Jr and Waltrip were again the cars the beat with Jr winning. 2005 speedweeks was the actual END of the DEI dominance as Teresa Earnhardts meddling with swapping the crew chiefs completely destroyed team chemistry and allowed a already closing Hendrick and Gibbs to completely surpass them as both DEI cars combined could only muster best results of 3rd by Jr at Daytonas two events and a 3rd by Michael Waltrip at the Aarons 499. Waltrip blew up even tho he led 42 laps in the Daytona 500 and Jr was a non factor in both Talladega races wrecking in both as did Waltrip wreck in the fall Talladega race. They parted ways after that as it was a sad end to what should have been many more plate wins from the company Earnhardt Sr. built. But from what I hear Earnhardt Sr. faked his death...so whats the world really about? God Bless you. Dont forget to repent and follow Jesus Christ. The world is coming to an end and we are living in revelation 🙏

Great race but awful finish. I wish NASCAR would have thrown a 👻 caution to eliminate the fuel mileage race. Would have loved to see DEI vs RCR vs Hendrick battle we never got.
that black and silver 29 Goodwrench car in 2003 was an awesome paint scheme
That was used from 2003-2006.

NASCAR should repost the classic races on the NASCAR Official UA-cam Channel in order to keep fans interested.
A Classic NASCAR TV network would be the BEST thing to do.
Even better if they put it back on TV
Or release them on dvd or Blu Ray
They did it now
@Bru Rred hi bru red.
That interview with Dale Jr and the fireworks in the background was beautiful.
So many great drivers back then. So much character. A great mix of veterans and young fellas. I even like all the field fillers!
No fillers in this race!
1:01:30 to 1:01:37 I love Allen, Benny, and Wally's reaction as well as the spotters. Jimmie did a great job getting through that wreck

Luis Mayor he had a couple shots at a 500 win but did nothing
Should have won talladega

Looking at the points at the end was crazy. Waltrip 5th in points. Lol
Sadly he didn't finish top 10 in points due to a late stretch of bad luck.
This was my VERY first race I went to.
I completely forgot Biffle won his first race here. I even have this on Vhs
Robbie Gordon driving like a maniac in the early going, miss guys like that

NASCAR trying to "prevent" stuff from happening is what got it to be uninteresting in the first place.

Had DEI won this race they would’ve swept all the plate races in 2003 those cars were just so strong on the plate races.
Or Waltrip. He had a car strong enough to contend with Harvick and Junior. He could have won his 3rd straight race at Daytona.
