@BraddahBruce i’m not sure if theres really bon dance in Okinawa. Our friend Aron is in Okinawa and her grandma who we dance with says Aron never seen any bon dances up there so far. It makes me wonder if this is more of a Hawaii tradition. I’ve also never heard of an all Okinawa bon dance except on Oahu at Jikoen Hongwanji and Okinawan Festival and both still have a Japanese yagura gumi playing Fukushima Ondo live. aside from the specific food, music, & they type of live drumming its kinda the same as a regular local Japanese bon dance. Most Hawaii bon dances that have Okinawan dances recorded or live also mainly have Japanese bon dance at them. This is a good question and I’m not really sure if they even have Okinawan only bon dances in Okinawa. The three bon dances we have gone to in Japan never have Okinawan bon dance in them live or recorded. Maybe someone else here knows the answer to this question.
Thank you for capturing these guys Aaron! I can never get them except at the Okinawan Festival! Yay!
Do you know if anyone can join the drumming troop and learn. Looks fun. Great vids btw 🤙🏼

Is there a big difference between Okinawan and Japanese bon dance? If so, what would you say makes the biggest difference?

I'm sorry I'm not sure. I'm no expert on the culture side but just a videographer/photographer.
Maybe someone can chime in on that.
