The detail in your video helped me repair a bathtub drain linkage that had snapped. What a pain fishing the stopper out of the overflow pipe. Thank You!
Nice work! So many folks literally go their entire lives with no understanding of how these work and they spend tons on liquid plumber or as you say, pull the strainer to no avail. Great video!
Excellent, informative tutorial without a hint of condescension. Anxiety about plumbing is the main impediment to affordably remodeling my bathrooms. I will now be watching ALL of your videos.
Thank you for making this video Bob! The lever on my drain broke off and tou have taught me everything I need to know about replacing it. Plus, I didn't know to put the snake down the overflow pipe. You are very helpful, and I look forward to learning more from you. Thank you so much!
This was great. I’m not a plumber but I need to remove the switch plate to clean off some rust. Didn’t want to do it until I learned what could go wrong, and I just did. Thank you.
I appreciate the full assembly example used. It always helps to get a Big Picture. Bob also does a great job of clearly reviewing what has been taught to be sure we see the whole picture. I will be checking things from Bob on any plumbing needs I encounter. Great job Bob
I have a home owner customer that doesnt remember if the drain always drained or if a stopper was in pipe To fill tube. Its unbelievable. Anyway I put a line from top or bottom and comes out on other side.. Do I have to make a hole on other side of.tub to unclog???
Great video. Walks you through the entire process and gives more info in case you want to snake your tub to do it safely w/o raking up more repairs. Thanks Bob!
Best video by far we've seen. Very much appreciate you take the time to show every single thing. We just put in a brand new entire bathroom. Hooked everything up and everything worked but the tub wouldn't hold water and zero instructions. So we've been watching some videos and yours is by far the best. We give you a hundred stars. Thank you and ours does not have the backing plate. And I think that we will find one that does just in case. Thanks again. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the video Bob. I wish this was available onto UA-cam 10 years ago when I replaced the overflow on my tub. No locking faceplate on the overflow and here I am 10 years later doing this again because the tube coming out of the shoe came loose while snaking the line. Thankfully we have a 24 hour supply house in Brooklyn. 10 years older, and the 12 inches I had to work in 10 years ago seems to have shrunk
First of all, thanks for taking the time to produce this UA-cam video. I have say that I honestly have never come across a trip lever bathtub drain in a real life situation. In my area, the water source has very high mineral content, which, as I have learned through this video,is probably the reason they're not used here very much. I am doing a bathroom reno in my own home, and in an effort to save money, I ordered an open box brass waste system online to match the existing plumbing installed when the tub was installed over 40 years ago. Unfortunately, the merchant sent me the wrong item and I received the trip lever system instead of the twist and close model that I ordered. Now that you have explained this system so thoroughly,I understand that it isn't in my best interest to install the thing. I'm sure that it's wonderful and all but the upcoming maintenance and problems that would be associated with using this hardware in a hard water in my area would be a nuisance going forward. Thanks for the heads up and I will send this item back to the seller. Cheers mate.
Appreciate the feedback, I'll have to update possibly with a new video as we do not have that issue in New York. Water is of good quality, thanks again for commenting.
You are definitely a Master Plumber. I've had problems with adjusting my Drain Stopper and finally gave up and took it out. Now after watching your video, I understand what I need to do to adjust it and get it right. Mr. Bob...thanks for all of your videos.
I currently live in a duplex and rent one side out. Our side has had various issues, and I just discovered today what these systems are called. One side has a trip lever with no plunger or spring-to-stopper system, while our side, has the lever with the spring, but there is no hardware connected where the spring ought to go, from the To to the non-existent plunger. I have a 2 year old, by the way, and your reference to the little toy soldier brought laughable tears to my eyes. Excited to see more of your videos. Thanks for sharing.
This video was great. I am dealing with a leaking bathtub drain on a friends tub and this will really help. In addition to being a good plumber you have the heart of a teacher. Thank you so much.
My tub hasn't been draining right for a while now. Cleaned the hair out, drain cover removed and replace properly. Still wouldn't drain very well. I was cleaning the tub after soaking some oven racks and leaned on the trip lever. WHOA, I could hear the water rushing down. I've known the problem but not the fix. UNTIL NOW! Thanks so much for the great information. Just knowing the industry name for it is a big help. The guy at the store won't look at me like I have three heads when I ask where they are now.
Hi Bob. Well I have a doozy, when I took the plate out, I discovered that the linkage was corroded and the threaded rod was broken in half. So I assume the other half is in the pipe, at the bottom. What should I do? Can't afford a plumber, so mom has to fish it out somehow.
I can usually fish it out with a wire coat hanger, Make a small hook on one end and go fishing. Be warned, sometimes the plunger is so full of soap scum and or scale it will not come out. In this case you'll have to access it from the back and remove the overflow to yank it out.
"V ery well done ! Thorough explanation for the do it your selfer of like me a retired guy who cannot afford to pay a plumber several hundred dollars when I can do this myself. Thanks for the presentation. Very Professional ~
wow havent had to deal with this stuff but holy crap i sure learned a lot from this. that trick of taking the old useless one instead of throwing it a way using it as a back up plate for the snake thats pretty nifty!
Excellent video Bob. I cannot say enough; by far the best, comprehensive, and concise video on this mechanism. May I suggest adding how to assemble it correctly, i.e. use of gaskets, teflon tape, and plumber's putty? Again, thank you for such a professional video, and I would like to add that you are very well spoken - seems like a somewhat rare commodity these days.
Bob. Love the detail. Our 18 year old tub would slowly drain. I figured it out by taking it apart and extending the rod. Both Nuts were away from the Plastic Swivel. Your video was the first one I saw because I wanted to know how it sealed if its metal to metal. Mine doesn't have the Orings (At least I didn't notice them) Im gonna take it apart again and clean and silicon grease it thanks to your suggestion.
Thank you very much. I was debating between a PVC and a brass drain and your comment about the separate set of screws securing the overflow in position solved my dilemna in favor of brass.
You can try with a wire coat hanger to retrieve it. If it's stuck in place, no other choice but but get behind the tub open the wall remove the overflow tube and get it out of there.
detailed video Bob. I really wish you would dissect the drain stopper with the rotary handle rather than the lever. I am sure you could do an incredible video. On my setup the handle is frozen.

You can try spraying some WD-40 down the overflow, let it soak for 24 hrs and try. If no luck and you have access from behind you may end up having to dismantle the overfloewtube to get it free.
Awesome video, my problem is the lever stopper is broken off in the T pipe. It looks like I’m going to have to take off the T pipe...replace it and and replace the drain lever that fits inside. Awesome explanation, Bob! Any idea how to get a stopper out of the tub if it's stuck? It just won't come out.
I've had this problem myself, try a wire hanger, create a small hook on one end and try to snag it and pull it up. I've sometimes had to saturate it with WD-40 down the overflow, let it sit for a day or two, the try and retrieve it. And then there are the ones that just won't budge, time for surgery from behind. Hey Bob. Great video and explanation of the assembly. This might be a dumb question, but how does the overflow work if there’s a stopper blocking the overflow pipe? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of having an overflow? Am I missing something here?
The stopper is a hollow piece of brass that blocks the tub from draining, but still allows water from the top to pass thru.
