I got this guitar thanks to your video back in early January because man, THIS is how my guitar is supposed to look. The fretwork (looking for low action) and pickups suck but man with some love put in this has become a serious modding project. Got locking tuners on it, a pair of unbranded seymour-like pickups and A LOT of action adjustments + fret work (mine had the fret rocker rock way more than yours). It is now a decent guitar and one of the best looking oddities I have around.
Oh and hopeless nut, I cut those slots waaay deeper, even sanded down the first fret a little in addition to some. So happy with it right now, thanks Ryan. But beware, interested potential buyers: It will need love, quite a lot of it. As Ryan well says towards the end, a great modding platform. Discouraging to beginners for sure because it's awkward as heck out of the box. Once set up properly... what a rock, hard picking blues, riff machine. Never expect Ibanez fast, don't get fooled by the "Racer" part of its name - it's a different kind of racing, back when cars had less safety measures and were more likely to get you killed but made you feel more alive, probably. Something unstable and funny and just reliable enough to not fail miserably on you. Mod it wisely if you intend to ever hit a stage with it. I'm halfway there.
From first glance i can't help but notice how this came together: ESP LTD production did a mistake on one Viper in their factory. This is a Viper! Upside down (a leftie with controls for right handed). I've always loved the Viper 🤩 One of the very few metal guitars i really considered buying. Topsy turvy they're nice too 😋
Exactly what I thought about the Viper looks.. And the concept of a budget guitar brand buying a boo-boo run from a major brand is something I never thought of.
I just received my black racer and oh my what a great great guitar. Live in Canada. It cost me 300 bucks. What a steel quality is there plays nice sounds good. I am just dumbfounded.
Why does a racing stripe ALWAYS make a guitar cool. Without that racing stripe, the guitar is powerless over me. But that little stripe makes me want to buy it for no reason.
Of all the guitars this is def one. I actually dig the whole look. The high nut throwing off intonation is something a lot of people overlook and something I didn’t realize was a factor when I was younger
I got this a couple of weeks ago in yellow. Tried it a rehearsal and yeah the pickups squealed bad, which was a shame as they sounded ok but completely unmanageable, and the tuners sucked really bad (turn turn turn turn, nothing. The worst I've encountered and impossible to play with serious frustration). However the nut was spot on as was the setup with perfect intonation. Changed the tuners and pickups and now the thing is great. Love it and enjoyed modding it. Nice one Ryan
Ryan, its an inexpensive guitar. Mixrophonic pickups dont always need replaced. Sometimes they simply arent wax potted. Doing that costs almost nothing. Try that before you pay more money for new pickups. Cheers. 🍻
Got one in black...Love it!!! I am putting locknut tuners on it ...Thats it! I picked on up on Reverb for $134 last week ...I think they still have a few at this price .....
I went to snap one of these up because I'm a sucker for a good looker with decent reviews and a junkie's price and saw they had a purple one... so, I went purple, because purple is the deepest color. Anyway, purple showed up and it was amazingly fine-- very clean build, nice, clear, honest and responsive pickups, beautiful fretboard and such a smooth play. Love it. So, my eye was always on that none more yellow so swveral months later, price still low, I ordered up the yellow. By comparison, both fretboards are equally lush, but the similarities kind of end there. Yellow has more of a baseball bat neck, glossed to match the candy apple coating across the body (purple was matte, like the body, fairly flat neck, especially by comparison), yellow's pickups smokier than purple (purple uncovered, maybe a good example of the whole covers debate), but other than these differences (significant) they're both really fun and comfortable and mega great for the money. My yellow gloss also came with a pickup selector poker chip (not pictured) and purple matte had black hardware and no stripes (just aesthetics.) Anyway, these were both sweet for 190 clams. 💜💛
Mine was delivered today. Yaller n black. Must be a new batch. And they were listening on the nut. Mine is spot on. The pups are still microphones but I didnt expect that to change. I like it so much I have a set of SD high voltage pickups coming for it. Yes the pickups cost more than the whole guitar. Not the first time Ive done that.
I've got two of these (I live in Canada), the grey one and the red one. Really nice guitars, especially the grey one, it's the first SG type guitar that doesn't neck dive on me. Be advised tho, the red one is more pink candy red then the red they have on the amazon pictures.
I live in Chinada as well, ordered the revenge model today in almost an army green color, never really in to explorers but the price and color got me, also grabbed the firefly yellow bat on Amazon wish they had more fireflys
Just amazing what you can get for very little buckage these days. I like the look of this guitar-I love SGs-I’ve never seen a reverse offset one! Crazy idea, but it looks cool. There’s nothing wrong with that guitar that a good setup and better pickups won’t cure. If I was to buy a guitar in this price range, I’d expect to replace the pickups and probably the tuners as well. My first electric was a St George, made by Teisco, got it in 1964, and it was the ‘60s equivalent in price to this one. $85 as I recall, and it was a much lower quality instrument than this thing.
I am going on my 4th Westcreek, the Racer being my 4th. I bought the 333, Helios, and JX-20. Racer will be here around the 24th. A change of strings for all, and some bridge adjustment (JX-20 was way off) and holy crap. I love these guitars.
Great review! Full disclosure: I'm an asshole that bought up 3 of them (one in each color) after I bought the first one and was just so impressed with it. They had a $40 coupon, so at only $170 each, I couldn't resist! All 3 showed up perfect, basically set up *ok* already, just needed a little fine tuning on the intonation. I'm always surprised to see guitar unboxing videos and playing before replacing whatever horrible strings must be on there. That's the first thing I do before even plugging in.... Such a beautiful machine!!! And I DO dig the extra bonus micro-phonic pickup "issue" - for how I play anyways! Finally, GREAT NEWS FOLKS! Out of curiosity I messaged Westcreek a while back (after they sold out all 3 colors) and they responded, "this guitar are expected to arrive around November 13th!"
About the Pickups: You might get rid of dark muddiness of you adjust the pickup height. Maybe they aren't wax dipped and that is causing the feedback. I notice the pickups are 4 conductor, red, yellow, white, bare so that means you can do things like splits, tap, and out of phase.
I just got my Red Racer Today. Either I got lucky or they have stepped up their QC. My cowboy chords are spot on. ( I did notice some pinging while tuning) I lowered the bridge down some so I was 1.75 on the 12 fret low E and 1.5 on the High E. No buzzing or dead frets found. I did raised the Bridge pickups so they matched the volume of the Neck pickup. Paint job is flawless. I don't play extreme high gain so dont know if the pickups are microphonic but I'm replacing them with Humbucker sized P90s anyways.
If I didn't already have an old beater Epiphone SG, I'd play that West creek. I'd like to find a good chibson next lol. Check the neck relief with the strings off. Sean(scar my guitar) got a West creek and it had a slight back bow too. Might explain your low action, almost buzzy frets, and the nut slots being shallow
It looks like a reverse of the “SG” shape you can order from Warmoth, but those are always made as bolt-on bodies. Reverend Roundhouse guitars are kind of an offset Les Paul shape… a Surfy Paul?
I've been checking everyday, still nothing!! I bought the Revenge and it is a great guitar top to bottom, can't find a flaw. They've gone out of stock several times but they always resurface. But it's not looking good for the yellow racer. The only problem I saw in a Racer review was some of the frets were uneven. So hopefully they're just making the proper adjustments and maybe they'll turn up again. Cuz these are certainly a lotta bang for your buck...
I'm liking that blue and white amp behind you. I believe that you should be able and be prepared to do basic maintenance on any guitar. If the basic body of the guitar is good, then fixerup and play.
I switched out the pickups to a pair of old black hot Deans and picked up a set of a black bridge and tailpiece on Amazon. It' looks so much better now! Great axe for the price.. Super weekend warrior bar banger.
Even if it isn't perfect stock, it's unique and good enough that it seems like it'd be the perfect mod machine and good to buy if someone is trying to learn how to setup a guitar properly.
Great review Ryan. All the good and not so good points demonstrated in a nice and fun manner. A great jam over the loop too. And a bonus 'live' string breaking! Awesome!
If you didnt ruin the nut the other day try Guitar Madness pickups, stick to the sets with steel baseplates. The Overwound Alnico 2 set is the Tonerider Rocksong set on paper, they're good. On eBone and Reverberate. (BTW, scale length is measured on the high E--)
On a cheap guitar hearing 'action is uncomfortably fast and i would probably raise it a bit' this is a great thing to hear on a budget guitar because they usually suffer from action needing to be high to because of fret or nut issues.
i saw it just yesterday and I had to buy it, now waiting for it to get home! i am going to put some pieces that I have alredy at home, such a v shape Gretsch bridge, superdistortion pickup in bridge position, lockers tuners and some better pots that i have, very excited about this beauty, it is a whole inspiration to play so fast kind of punk rock as Zeke ,Poison Idea, dwarves and some more, hihihihihihi \m/
Oh if you want to replace the pickups in this on a budget, get some (UK based) Entwistle HV58 pickups in there. They changed my life, Pickups that make SD look lazy and uncaring for a fraction of the cost. I now find it really hard to buy other brands for experiments because I know Entwistles leave so many brands in the dust , no I am not an affiliate.
Ryan, that is a cool looking guitar - think it could use a 60 cycle hum overall? Crazy paint job (leave the racing stripe), little electronics upgrade maybe?? Either way, lovin' 60 cycle hum and the cool reviews!
Wow, I am relatively impressed with this thing. Some wax potting would be a pretty easy fix to eliminate the microphonic feedback. Pretty cheap solution too, beeswax and paraffin both work. The pickups themselves actually sounded pretty decent. I love cheap guitars like this, I own several now- my favorite score was an Arbor SG jr I picked up at a pawnshop for $70. It didn't need any work at all, cleaned it up a bit, threw some decent strings on, and it plays like a champ! Plays and sounds like guitars you would find in the $500 range, Epiphone, Squier, etc
I have always hated this style, but when I saw the yellow and black stripe I jumped on it. It matches my Ram truck. Had it drop shipped to Michigan and then drove it back to Ontario just to get one. I wanted to hate it but in the end I couldn't. Yes I had to fix the nut but I have to do that on all the guitars I buy. I put in push poles for the humbuckers and change the tone caps to 22s. Felt no need to change the buckeyes as they sound great. I changed the tailpiece to a v-style like the gretsch streamliner series and it really makes it pop😮. ua-cam.com/video/ZEw1ufllAgA/v-deo.htmlsi=-rcmOFdcF3QlhaFB
Cool looking guitar. I would never have noticed that sound at the nut. If you didn't mention it. The microphonic kinda bugs me. Still a super looking guitar.
They should at least re-release that color. I have been trying to tell people that a reverse SG would look cool and they nailed that. I watched on my phone, and despite the microphonic part, I thought those pickups sounded pretty good.
I had the red one of those I sent it back. The pick ups were not very high output type pick ups and neck was to thick for me. It is a cool looking guitar.
It is a good looking guitar for sure, I love the looks. The pots appear a bit too close together for doing volume swells, but not a big deal. Cut a new bone nut, replace the tuners, and pickups. Personally I would try a set of the GFS humbucker-size P90's. P90's are simple and even the affordable ones sound good.
@@keithhampton9700 I just did the exact same thing to a Schecter C1 E/A. I love the guitar and the Piezo sounds great, but the stock humbuckers were way too dark. I got the hum-size P90's from GFS and 500k pots and it's like a new guitar to me. Good luck to you, I think you will like the P90's.
yeah i would just want that body, it's sexy af. the neck looks good, too. and then just have a bridge pu and a volume knob. that would be perfect. the color would have to go and replaced tho. i think this yellow is generally a good color for guitars, but i don't want a yellow guitar.
Thanks, you just put me off buying one! No problem with lowering nut slots (if very careful) but duff pickups is a big NO NO for me. TBH I'm not sold on the reversed off set shape either. I much prefer my Epiphone SG Muse but that costs a £150 more than this Westcreek. That said, Westcreek are producing some good guitars for the price paid - I have a Revenge (exp shape) and like it very much - I just put locking tuners on it and changed the strings. It is a bit a heavy though at 8lb 10oz. Cheers
I think the stock strings must be really bad because after you changed the high E it stood out and looked really bright and shiny compared to the other 😅
i got the solid purple. nice frets but small fast neck inotated out of the box very nicely packed looked hard for blemishes couldn't find any. i like this baby, no black finger tips feels good
Im pleasantly surprised. A lot of low end guitars, while they may play well for the value, simply look like knockoffs - overuse of veneer, 6-7 pieces of wood for the body but refusing to use a solid color finish because they want to seem premium, super thick glossy poly finishes, and a schecter level of binding, fake pearl, questionable rosewood imitations, and fake abalone that's supposed to convey quality but really is just over-decorated and gross. This one? Dark board (looks a lot better than the indian laurel I often see), tasteful, simple, and original inlays (really love the 12th fret one here), a unique shape, and a solid color paint job. It's loud but not too much visually, and outside of the headstock face design I don't think anything would need to be changed. Also it's quite novel to offset the SG the *other* way than is typical. Most offsets push the headstock further from you in a sitting position (or there are really big non-offset guitars that do the same like the explorer and firebird as well as the SG which has a much longer neck joint than a les paul). This one brings it closer, opposite what a usual SG would do. Love it.
@@60CycleHumcast Really liked how you described it as a hobbyist platform. I'm a hobbyist myself. Thankfully for my wallet they're out of stock right now.
Harley Benton also has an SG clone that's offset but it's more offset in the jaguar/jazzmaster style with the hump on the bottom. But we all know about those and that they're good, cheap guitars (except wrt to 24th fret access). which i'm actually talking about the 580, not the high end ones.
I love the look of this guitar and I'm pretty sure it's because it reminds the 8 year old in my head of Racer X's car from the Speed Racer cartoon.
That guitar would be great for the band Stryper!

Felt no need to change the buckeyes as they sound great. I changed the tailpiece to a v-style like the gretsch streamliner series and it really makes it pop😮.

I got something out of it because you have fun.
Ryan says he doesn't own another yellow guitar with a yellow sparkle jag-stang over his shoulder 😂
That’s green
For crying out loud, that’s gold sparkle.😂
@@familiarpurrson8744I also vote that it’s gold sparkle with yellow undertones. Have we just discovered that Ryan might be colorblind?! 😱😂😉
@@MashaT22 You might be colorblind. It's definitely green.
All of you are colorblind! Thats green sparle with a hint of yellow🤪
You can not beat this price for a set neck, 2 humbuckers, nice fret edges, and great action!
I snagged a Censtar Saturn ( Less Paul ) with all of those features, and a slightly high cut nut, for under two bills! Too good to pass up!
None of those features make a guitar expensive. It’s like bragging about a car that has 4 tires.
Cool looking guitar. I would never have noticed that sound at the nut. If you didn't mention it. The microphonic kinda bugs me. Still a super looking guitar.
I have noticed a lot of metric guitars have the 25" scale- 635mm.
Super cool! Wish they were available for purchase! That thing looks super cool and fun
I'm modding a Leo Jamz SG rite now.Locking tuners,P90 bucker size p ups and500k pots. Wish me luck 🤞
I want the red one to put my 2 humbucker sized P90's in.
Other than swapping pickups for regular use because of the microhome then why not just wax pot them?
Because it’s a big mess of a project and I don’t want to do it.

Just do it next time you're waxing your junk..
Easy peasy lemon striped guitar no squealzy
Thanks, you just put me off buying one! No problem with lowering nut slots (if very careful) but duff pickups is a big NO NO for me. TBH I'm not sold on the reversed off set shape either. I much prefer my Epiphone SG Muse but that costs a £150 more than this Westcreek. That said, Westcreek are producing some good guitars for the price paid - I have a Revenge (exp shape) and like it very much - I just put locking tuners on it and changed the strings. It is a bit a heavy though at 8lb 10oz. Cheers
That's an upside down ESP Viper.
But I bet it don't measure up to a viper 400
wish they had more colors
What happened to the two princetons jingle??? Did I miss it somehow?
The yellow neck / headstock is amazing
They reversed the body of the LTD Viper. Cool looking.
it would probably be worth doing a good setup and fixing the nut and changing the pups
I think the stock strings must be really bad because after you changed the high E it stood out and looked really bright and shiny compared to the other 😅
i got the solid purple. nice frets but small fast neck inotated out of the box very nicely packed looked hard for blemishes couldn't find any. i like this baby, no black finger tips feels good
Im so glad i chose this as my first guitar.
Please, oh please do a video where you put in Offkiltertrons and a JM trem system!!!
Love it.
Yeah it’s really fun! Hopefully they make more of these
@@60CycleHumcast Really liked how you described it as a hobbyist platform. I'm a hobbyist myself. Thankfully for my wallet they're out of stock right now.
They’re back on Amazon…
Any neck dive?
Harley Benton also has an SG clone that's offset but it's more offset in the jaguar/jazzmaster style with the hump on the bottom. But we all know about those and that they're good, cheap guitars (except wrt to 24th fret access). which i'm actually talking about the 580, not the high end ones.
Does the reverse offset help with neck dive?
Ooooo, fun😍. Wish there was a short scale version.
15:26 Surf-Doom!🔥🏄🏼
Does it neck dive?
it's got a Mosrite underbite.
Lemon Drop yellow. I love it.
Is this a better guitar than the Epiphone SG Special?
