    So many of these reasons resonated with me, but for where I live, in Cornwall UK. Obviously, the high season is a different time of year, but it's such a popular tourist area in the summer that you can't drive anywhere, the beaches are packed, and places to eat get booked up pretty quick. In the winter, and even in the summer months out of school holidays, loads of stuff shuts down, and when we first moved here, we couldn't get a table anywhere for my wife's birthday in June because everywhere shut at 5! Saying that, I do love it here, and when the weather is still good in September, the locals come out of hiding and the beaches have a lovely vibe where you can just hang out and it's not too busy.
    I'd love to visit Salem one day, but I can't imagine I'd want to visit during October. It's the history I'd want to experience. And of course, the witchy shops!

      Yes!! There are definitely some strong pros and cons to living in a touristy spot, it's not for everyone. The beginning of September is the best in my opinion because it starts to turn into fall but you don't have the crazy crowds of October. Definitely would recommend visiting! 😊

    Now that you’ve lived in Salem for longer , would you consider doing an updated video on places to go when you’re a tourist ? ( like restaurants , crystal shops , “witchy” shops and places to check out ) and places to absolutely avoid ?

      I definitely want to! I've been planning on filming individual places to have their own videos and see inside them to make it more informative. the goal is to get at least one video up a week focusing more on salem content with the holiday season coming up!

    Salem resident for 30 years here; grew up in Boston. I live right off the Common (Williams), so in the thick of it. I love the fact that I can walk, bike or Salem Skipper anywhere around town. Yeah, no more car! I used to have to commute into Boston before Covid, so the commuter rail got me there in 30 minutes, or the ferry for the most wonderful ride in the morning. If you are interested in getting involved in the community, there are a lot of opportunities: neighborhood associations, garden club, etc. I volunteer for our free book swap twice a year, and do some pro bono GD work for a few organizations. The Halloween season is moving into September, now, and I blow through a lot of candy for the kids on the 31st. Locals cannot eat in anyplace downtown in October, and family and friends outside of Salem will refuse to drive into town due to the traffic. So, if you are planning a Salem visit, come in September. Yes, WC Mall is a sad dump. But, do love living here. I love the events and festivals that happen the rest of the year: Salem So Sweet, Film Festival, Poetry Festival, Jazz and Soul in August. Walking up to the Willows with my dog on a lovely summer day. Meeting people that have come here from literally all over the world. When giving out Halloween candy, I ask people where they have come from, and you hear: Peru, England, Australia, Utah, Morocco, California.
    Yes, it has grown very expensive; if I didn't buy in 1992, I couldn't afford my big old house today. I always say that Salem is a city with a small town feel. Welcome Mel, and I hope you get the magic back as a resident.

      You’ve described Salem perfectly. I grew up in Salem, joined the USAF. Left in 1979, but of course came back to visit family. As family passed away and I attended funerals, I always spent weeks to re-experience the town as it grows. I think it is getting better.

    Good morning beautiful Mel Lissa. I use to live in Salem there back in the early 1980s 80-83. I lived on Bridge street . I think that's the street. That's the street that you could drive on to cross over into Beverly Ma. Back when i lived there? The Parker Brothers plant was just down the street from where i lived. I also remember the house of Donuts? Salem is a vibrant beautiful city there with true rich history. I remember Salem / Marblehead harbor . Pickering Warf ? Also the famous Reds restaurant next to the Salem city Police department there. I actually use to frequent that place many times then. Riley plaza had back then a huge parking lot right in the center of the plaza. Im an older guy originally from the Bronx N.Y.C. i currently live in the S.W. region of tge country in Albuquerque N.M. and have been here since the Late 80s. That was kind of a boomarang thing . Anyway a couple of friends and me are planning a trip this summer to N.Y.C. and the Boston area. Lol you can bet ? Im gonna make a point to visit Salem . Anyway Grazie for sharing this video post and your views on things there in Salem Massachusetts. Thank you my lady and Happy 2024 new year. Ciao. Oh yeah i also remember the old Beef & Oyster house restaurant too

    There is nowhere in Salem that is a 15 minute drive to downtown. Living in the “outskirts” of Salem (whatever that is) puts you probably 8 min max away from downtown, and downtown is a very small area, so of course there is limited housing there. Living less than a mile away from downtown now, having lived two miles away and having lived right downtown, I can tell you that living downtown is more of a hindrance than the alternative. It’s also just as expensive in the “outskirts”. If you have to drive to Boston for work like I do, you do NOT want to live right downtown in October.
    Salem is much more than just downtown. Many people have lived here their entire lives and we support our local businesses and fellow residents to the max. It’s definitely not a “city” feel- it’s a medium sized town that has a strong sense of community. People who want to live downtown often are just into the witch and Halloween scene and they typically don’t stay. There are also plenty of nice neighborhoods that are kept clean outside of downtown- a lot of residents take pride in their houses snd their neighborhood streets. It’s an amazing place to live year-round.

    Before I moved from NYC to Florida, one of my bucket lists was to go to Salem. Both as a practitioner and as a lover of all things ghostly, historical and architectural beauty, I felt as though it was a place I needed to see before we left. Alas, we never made it. The purchase of my house was speedy and I barely had the time to think.
    That being said, I feel like it's similar to "the pros and cons of living in nyc" , all of your pros are similar to those in nyc, such as accessibility and convenience, as well as the noise and inconvenience. I love NYC, but my family lives in FL and it was time to leave that state. I will still want to visit Salem eventually. Side not, I visited Boston and wasn't a fan, I think my expectations were higher than I anticipated, maybe that's coming from an NYC state of mind.
    Thanks for the personal opinions and experience advice. What is the "off season"? Sounds like a time I'd love to visit. Totally not going for the whole "Halloween" aspects.

    I enjoyed your video. Love Halloween 🎃

    • @Peanut_taco_muffin
      @Peanut_taco_muffin 2 роки тому

      It’s not just downtown that’s expensive- in fact it’s just as expensive outside of downtown. Right now rent is at an all-time high and there is really nothing under 2 grand in town. There aren’t many sketchy places to live in Salem, but there are a couple of areas that aren’t quite as nice as the rest of town. Hawthorn Commons is a big complex about two miles from downtown and they’re pretty reasonable units, at least in comparison to others. A one bedroom is somewhere around $2,100 there. The only negative is a housing project right behind it, but when I lived there I had no issues with safety. It’s also really quiet.

    • @MelLissax
      @MelLissax  2 роки тому

      thanks so much for watching! within walking distance, there won't be anything close to downtown that'll be inexpensive unfortunately. even other areas of salem are a decent walk since they're separate neighborhoods. the downtown area is just super small! there are plenty of nice neighborhoods or surrounding cities if you didn't mind taking an uber in when wanting to go to salem tho such as beverly, peabody, or swampscott!

    I've been looking a lot of videos about different cities / towns /states in the U.S. and my thought is : wherever you go it's gonna be really expensive (if it's nice and sometimes even if it sucks) .And as a french citizen, i really wonder how U.S people manage to pay a rent higher than 1500 per month for JUST a one or two rooms appartment. It's a genuine mystery for me considering the fact that your healthcare cost SOOOOOOOO much compared to our. Plus, life is generaly more expensive in the U.S . I mean are you all earning 4K per month minimum?

      Not all areas in the US are that expensive. And consider that they usually earn 1,5 to 2x times as much as we do (I’m a Belgian citizen) taxes are lower than in most of Europe too. I think healthcare wise, it’s very important to have a good insurance.

    Salem is full of mostly NEW people now that old and long-time residents have been priced out & can't stand the caliber of the people moving there now. If you're not a liberal, you'll hate it there. The mayor SUCKS. "The Point" is where they dump all the illegals and now there's a huge problem with homelessness downtown. The people in the neighborhood where the Hocus Pocus house is also hate all the traffic and people that are constantly blocking the small streets and intersections there. The city is starting to look like a ghetto and you will not recognize it 15 years from now, trust me. My best friend lived there until his death last year so I was up there ALL the time and can honestly say I'd never want to live there. He himself was planning to leave before he died, he was so fed up with the riff raff that took it over, including the city council. I'd drive to his house really late at night in October just to avoid the traffic which was abysmal. My advice is to avoid it at all costs in October. You can see ALL the same museums, eat at ALL the same restaurants and visit ALL the same parks WITHOUT all the people and inflated prices (you WILL Pay MORE for EVERYTHING in October). At this point the only thing I love about Salem is the ARCHITECTURE. It's gorgeous and historical. Other than that.... I'll pass.
