  • We have such sights to show you, Dumpster Dwellers! Trick or Trash may be over, but we've got one last goodie in our treat bag for you! 🎃💚📼 Joe and Sean are digging into Hulu's latest re-imagining of the Clive Barker horror masterpiece in a new Ripe Review. In the remake, recovering drug addict Riley and her boyfriend Trevor steal the Lament Configuration to sell for quick cash. Riley solves the puzzle and inadvertently summons the otherworldly Cenobites to her, led by the Priest aka Pinhead. They mark Riley (or something) and force her to bring them blood sacrifices for the box, so that the final configuration can be opened to bring their god Leviathan into our reality! Will we be asking Uncle Frank to... COME TO DADDY?! Or will we be begging the Cenobites to rip us to pieces to end our suffering?

Hellraiser is a 2022 supernatural horror movie directed by David Bruckner (V/H/S, The Ritual). Loosely based on the 1986 novella 'The Hellbound Heart' by Clive Barker. The movie stars Odessa A'zion as Riley, who accidentally opens the puzzle box and releases the Cenobites. Led by the Priest, played by Jamie Clayton, the sadistic monsters force her to bring more victims to the box so that they may summon their master, the massive Leviathan originally seen in Hellbound: Hellraiser II'. Also starring Drew Starkey as Trevor, Brandon Flynn as Matt, Adam Faison as Colin, Aoife Hinds as Nora, and Goran Višnjić as Roland Voight.

My biggest gripe is how the Lament Configuration functions. The whole drawing blood angle works in theory but not in execution. The amount of people who accidentally stab themselves with it as well as the people that purposely get stabbed with it just shows you how fucking stupid this version of the box is. The whole point is that people willingly solve the box and seal their own fate. But the Cenobites in this movie dont give a fuck about that. Which completely changes them into generic evil villains. When they were never supposed to be generically evil.

I would say absolutely yes. It was not perfect, but it was one of the better horror films to come out this year. There's been a lot of duds and disappointments, ( the munsters, Halloween ends, Jeepers Creepers reborn etc.) But this is definitely one of the better offerings to come out this year. And it was great to have it just in time for halloween. I love this franchise, even the lackluster straight to video films that we have gotten over the past decade or so, and I am glad to see it brought back up a notch. Like I said, it was far from perfect, but it was a damn good entry and it even introduced a few new elements that I really enjoyed. I hope to see a sequel to this, but I don't really feel like this franchise needs to rely on continuity. There is so much to draw from in the mythology, the novels, the comics, there's just so much you can do and if you ask me, there really doesn't need to be a sequel per se. Just another hellraiser film, telling another interesting story from this world. I really feel like hellraiser should be more of an anthology style franchise. Either way, as long as they keep up the quality that they delivered with this film, I'm down. But yes, this was a much needed reboot and a breath of life into this otherwise dying franchise.

I grew up watching it each night during Nick at Night reruns, but I had to think of this as more of a beautiful art project rather than an accurate film based on the TV show. Hellraiser(2022) is similar to Evil Dead(2013), recovering addict protagonist, object that unleashes demonic forces(box or book) and the protagonist loses everyone in the end(Riley saved 1 person,Mia lost everyone!). Evil Dead delivers where Hellraiser doesn't. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it(Jamie Clayton as the Hell Priest,H.R Giger like designs of the Cenobites, ect.), but it lacks the hedonistic nature and gore of the original, if it gets a sequel hopefully it doesn't pull its punches like this 1.(to be fair I did watch Terrifier 2 right before watching Hellraiser, anything would seem tame compared to that flick lol).

Yeah I mean I easily put this remake up with Hellraiser 3-4 as far as I like things it adds, I was lukewarm about some other things, and it has the advantage over them that its shot quite well and I like the atmosphere better in this film than those two. I will say, I was greatly hoping for something more at the end. Like, when you're going from something as epic as Channard in 2, it just seems like not that big a transformation. That being said, I would definitely like seeing a sequel to this, and yes it can have the same main girl, and they put her or someone she knows in another situation where the puzzle gets them into trouble. I don't think they really *can* do that with the main girl from this however because she apparently "figured it all out" by the end so unless she suffered a blow to the head I doubt she could really be owned by the box ever again and even if she was I guess she could just do something similar to get out of it? So maybe just act like it's same universe, but start over with totally new characters and a new situation. I just know I'm fine with how this went down except the fairly weak final scene that I thought should have been both more gory and had more length to it and we perhaps finally got a scene of him communicating with Leviathan and it responding? I really liked how things began with Voight, but uh...the weird nerve rack inside him I thought could have had a better and more horrifying design to it and I think his character's dialogue got much weaker by the end compared to how cool his opening scene was. Definitely not Frank level of villain.
Now, the real question is. Have either of you guys seen Evolver (1995) or Arcade (1993)? Because if not, both contain John DeLancie from Star Trek and both involve technology out of control. Lawnmower Man vibes too. These would both be really great to discuss. I remember seeing them on shelves at Blockbuster all the time back in the day.

There’s two things I love about this movie. First is the redesign of the cenobites, where their own flesh has been used instead of the leather daddy look. Along with all the sfx/practical effects. The second is that they used Clayton’s fucked up voice from transitioning, and then added a few extra layers to it to make it otherworldly. It sounded cool. For the rest of the movie there were things I liked and didn’t. I wish they showed more of the Leviathan, but I get the cgi would be so costly. The kills were too quick, but the gore they did do was nice. I like that they tried to add actual lore to it all, and if they do a sequel I hope they bring more of that lore out. I like the sets actually moving and warping when the cenobites are arriving. That’s a cool thing. I do agree that they could have done so much more though. The story could have been better, and it felt like the plot was just rushed and it didn’t really make me feel anything towards the characters or their deaths. If they make a sequel, I hope they can make a better story now that they have the blueprint of how the cenobites looks. So they dont need to focus on that so much.

And Pinhead tells her that, welp, that's Knowledge, the knowledge that all of this is her fault cause she relapsed and started all this mess. The point from where Voight reveals he’s still alive to the end of the movie was top notch. It really showed the potential a studio had to present this world with modern day filmmaking. I liked him sharing his backstory with the cenobites gifts, and Riley ultimately choosing to leave the box behind. I would say this movie was easily better than any Hellraiser sequel after Hellbound.

    I liked Riley in this.
She does some shady things in this but I really liked her character arc.
She's not your typical final girl and it was cool to see her journey from alcohol dependence to personal independence.

There’s not a lot of depth to the character and I think a lot of what they wanted to convey gets terribly lost amongst the attempt to deepen the lore of the box-rather than keeping it ambiguous and mysterious, and focusing on the human elements. She just comes off as a whiny brat that is almost entirely impractical in her journey and literally tumbles through the string of events simply because that’s how it needs to play out. -Joe

Two things :1) I'm kind of glad a new generation is getting exposed to an horror classic (because you know 90% of teens are not watching the original one). Plus the visuals are interesting, i don't know if i love them but i've seen waaaay worse 2) i don't need this. Frankly i didn't need anything beyond the first one. It's a closed story. Frank is an horrible human being and gets punished in the end. I' m going to watch it with friends while drinking beers and eating chips. Never again just by myself

Joe must of been in a bad mood when he watched it. As someone who hates a lot of stuff, I actually liked this Hellraiser. You can make anything sound dumb in a horror movie. I never once had any of the same feelings while watching it.
Makes me think about when Sean was talking about the time he ruined the watching experience of Avatar for the whole house.
You kept saying 13 Ghost but wtf man? Did you forget the end of 3 and all of Bloodline?
Did you forget in Inferno where Kirsty is willing to bring Pinhead multiple sacrifices to save herself? I was thinking more of them trying to piece in little call backs to the Hellraiser sequels.

I may have been a little excited, but I still feel the same way. I remember the sequels-this was supposed to be a different take, and that really bothered me. I also still stand by the 13 Ghosts thing. They didn’t piece it in so much as use the ideas wholesale, and I thought they could have done a way better story. Glad you liked it though! -Joe

18:40 Look I was late to the news about this actor being cast as pin head. But I had to wiki and seek out the insta to actually confirm that it was a trans person because every where I see it’s like “casting a woman” and here you are like “well look… IF they cast a man what difference would it make…”
English is English. Call the actor a trans woman or biological male. I’m not some woke pc dude obviously. Just … someone point out elephant in room

    • @MovieDumpster
      @MovieDumpster  Рік тому +1

There is no elephant in the room. The hub bub was about casting a female pinhead (biologically, identifiably, or otherwise) rather than a male/masculine, but the point I was trying to make was it didn’t matter whatsoever because these beings are supposed to be neutrally gendered. Their existence and purpose has no footing in what they can or can’t be identified as in a male/female sense. It doesn’t fucking matter either way. -Joe

@@MovieDumpster "IDENTIFIABLY" ok so theres no elephant in the room. Then one day someone you care about is gonna bring home a "woman" and the elephant in the room will be the "woman's" massive schlong. And you can copy paste this to your buddy, cousin or possibly son and tell him "Look, biologically, identifiably, or otherwise, thats a hot woman cock. Your confusion just doesn't matter whatsoever." Live it down.
