- Redbuds are a wonderful small tree to include in your home garden. I grow several species and varieties that provide flowers over a long period of time and beautiful leaf color through the summer.

I am in the low desert of Metro Phx and have a garden that has been featured and won garden of the month & yr awards. I used to grow the Mexican Redbud in our low desert. The Chinese Redbud & the typical Eastern Redbuds, though, beautiful, would never work here. However, I just recently planted (to try to fully establsh) both the Merlot Redbud & the Claremont Redbud---both known to have been hybridized, in part, to be quite a bit more heat tolerant. I believe NC State may have also assisted (?) in these varieties. I may have to use shade cloth for the next summer or two til they fully acclimate (one will get some shade in mid to late afternoon) but looking forward to them !!! Btw--find it HILARIOUS that (if true) you are growing trees in your neighbors yards 🤣😂😁🤗🤗❤
I just purchased and planted three different varieties of Redbud trees. Absolutely love them. Flamethrower is my favorite of my collection. Thank you for the info on them!
Gorgeous! I have a Rising Sun Redbud that I absolutely love.
I planted a Flamethrower this past June and love it. Looking forward to seeing what it looks like as it goes through its bloom period.
Beautiful!!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I love those springtime redbud trees!
Beautiful flowers friend 🌸 Never seen before .. Thank you for sharing details . Great information 🌹
This was great! Thank you!
Just bought one of these great video
I planted 1 Forest Pansy Redbud tree 4 years ago, and I bought 2 more this year. Now, after seeing your Chinese Redbud, I would love to have one.
Wow how beautiful ❤️
Great video and informative 🥰
I have one that popped up unexpectedly, though ironically enough it’s growing in the perfect place! My lawnmowing guy cut it down, but it’s come back as a very cool multiple trunked tree.
I have another that popped up in a flower bed, but it’s a runty one and in a bad spot and will have to go. Bummer.
I also purchased a Forest Pansy and am trying to decide just where I want it to go.
My final redbud is going to be a Texas whitebud, because they’re gorgeous too. They’re hard to find, though.
Redbud blossom jelly is awesome!
Ohhh I’ve never had that!
What a beautiful tree! We located in SC close to Charlotte. What time of the year should be planted? Spring or fall? Thanks!
Better in fall because you won’t have to water as much.
Thanks for the info on 'Don Egoff' blooming so much earlier than our native redbuds! Another good reason to get one! I live in northernmost Wake County, and my native redbuds are in full bloom today, 4/1/21. Normally that would be the last two weeks of March, but they're late with this weird consistently cool winter we had. My 'Forest Pansy' redbuds always bloom about a week later than just plain C. canadensis. I've also noticed that cultivars of our native redbud with colored foliage grow more slowly and less vigorously than the green leaved ones, which makes sense in terms of the amount of chlorophyll. Would you agree with that? Would that mean that the purple, gold, orange, or reddish leaved ones need more or less sun than the green ones?
100! Gosh it’s crazy how late flamethrower was to leaf out last year. No signs of life yet.
It was a treat to see you today!!!!
@@BrieThePlantLady i just bought a Flamethrower this Spring and i am already enjoying it’s changing foliage. From purple, orange and green, it is now golden yellow in winter. I cant wait to see the flowers blooming in those branches….
Hi Brie! I ordered a flamethrower redbud online, but it’s just a stick without any budding, no branches, no leaves! I did cut the top to see if any sign of life, and there is some small green in the center. Any tips to help it grow, would be much appreciated!!!
Hmmm just keep it watered and in the shade. That’s a terribly way to sell a redbud. Keep me in the loop- I hope it bursts into life soon!
Red buds are beautiful. There is a horrible privet that someone planted in front of our townhome. I can't cut it down because it is in the common area of my complex. I was hoping that the freeze we had in TX had killed it, but no luck. It is suffering, however, so if the HOA decides to cut it down, my dream is to plant red buds. They are glorious right now down here in TX.
Very nice Brie! I've added Merlot, Rising Sun, Flame Thrower, and Carolina Sweetheart. Have you got any other ones you would suggest?
I killed my merlot redbud. Sadly, I used extended control round up in an area near (10-15 feet away). It vaporized and killed my redbud. I was so sad. Last year, I planted a Carolina sweetheart. I hope it will satisfy my redbud obsession.
'Lavendar Twist' and 'Ruby Falls' are two really beautiful weeping varieties! They can be tough to find, but they sure are amazing plants!
redbud flowers with egg 😋😋😋🍳
😳😳😳❤
I planted Don Egolf about a year and a half ago . It’s still quite small. My Mon has one too, but it’s stayed more small bush sized. How old is yours?
This has been planted for 10 years! Can’t believe it’s been that long since I started this garden 😳 time flies.
@@BrieThePlantLady Thanks for the info! Gives me an idea of how fast it’ll grow. Mine is about 2’ or just over. Long ways to go!
I live in Wisconsin which is in zone 5, it is very cold in winter sometimes the temp could be below 5 to 10 for several days. We had a Cercis Canadensis and died few years ago. Didn't know it has Chinese Redbud until I saw your video. Where could I purchase this plant?
Sadly I don’t think this species will survive in the Midwest.
@@BrieThePlantLady Thanks for the info. I saw there are a lot of Redbud trees planted along the side road by the city, I think they are just regular Redbud, not the Chinese Redbud.
@@BrieThePlantLady when you filmed your redbud tree, what state is it?
My 30 year old redbud just lost one of its three trunks😢 I’m wondering if the other two trunks should be cut down because they have new growth?!?
I’d leave the trunks that aren’t damaged.
3:25 - how long has that been planted? Trying to judge growth rates.
Ten years! Everything here was planted in 2011
Where are you? I live in Daphne, AL. I want two red buds in my front yard! or one in the back yard where it would get shaded western sun! Please respond!
I’m in central NC near Raleigh. Alabama is quite hot, I do think redbud need more shade there.
I can't have don golf paid 200 for 4 to make an informal hedge along my foundation. Thinking redbuds grow like weeds here in Appalachia the 4 would be a show stopper but no I have remnants of one don egolf left they dont like late frost at all! I hope to get a flamethrower soon I do have rising sun and forest pansy.
I want to buy a Flame Thrower Redbud Tree immediately, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t survive planting in 80 degree June temperatures here in WNY. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Definitely wait until fall. No point in setting yourself up to fail.
@@BrieThePlantLady TYVM!
I have an open front yard, my tree died. Would redbud ideal to replace the empty space?
Yes... but I hesitate to recommend redbud for real full sun. I think eastern exposure is best.
I think it depends on what zone you’re in too. Here in CT, they seem fine with full sun.
Hello there, can anybody explain to me the difference between the "Don Egoff" and the "Avondale" varieties, if any. Many Thanks
Looks like the main difference is Don Egolf is sterile so it doesn’t pose a threat of becoming invasive. landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/cercis-chinensis
@@BrieThePlantLady Thank You, very kind of You
Is it just me or my flame thrower never bloomed in its 3 years in my garden? I guess it's not really sold for its flower 😂
Sadly my flame thrower died so I can’t speak to its flowering habit. It’s hard to beat Cercis chinensis for blooming.
Why not do this video after the leaves are on it so people can get a better image of the tree.
The point was to show the flowers.
Why is nobody selling hearts of gold anymore?
I think the newer varieties are taking priority/ make more money with royalties. Sad reality of the nursery industry
@@BrieThePlantLady Is it still legal to take cuttings from existing trees for free that are not being sold anymore?
@@shreyasghanta well first native redbuds don't root from cuttings so there isn't any point to trying that method, but YES, it is still illegal reproduce a plant with an active patent regardless of its availability in the trade. I am not sure when that patent was filed but it will probably expire in the next few years, but again native redbuds have to be grafted as they will not root from a cutting.
