It is very brave to actually try to make a cover of this song. Many have tried and failed. SRV did not simply try, he pulled it off with the flag flying high. The only other guitarist I know of that has made this song justice is a Norwegian guitarist, Vidar Busk.
Jimi died in 1969 when SRV was 15. But Jimi was Stevie’s favourite artist ever. He even helped Jimi’s family remaster Jimi’s collection with all proceeds going to Hendrix’s Dad and family ❤
I was devastated when SRV died in 1990 when I was 20. The only celebrity death that has ever upset me more was Jim Henson (The Muppets and Sesame Street) earlier that year. Even more tragically, Stevie had recently become a public advocate for sobriety after quitting alcohol and drugs, which nearly killed him. The musician John Mayer has said he never did drugs because of Stevie.
I was in a kid when it happened but my parents played his music and I recall the day of that crash very well. 😭 Isn’t it ironic when people cleanup their lives and then die shortly after..
Remember that day well. I was out all night and got to sleep like 5:00a.m. I woke up at about 1:00 p.m. .walked into the kitchen and there was a note from my cousin to her mom (my aunt) and it said "Eric is O.K. but SRV died". and I felt like someone punched me in the gut, then ANGER! Fuck Clapton he had his legacy and I hate him anyhow. That should have been Eric Clapton and not Stevie, who I just saw for the first time sober, and he was better than he was doin coke and boozin. I felt like smashing a guitar for a quick second then just sat down and teared up. What a loss. Fly on Stevie wherever you are now, I miss you brother.
I saw SRV twice. Art director I worked with went with me both times. He was drinking beer, I was not. I never have consessions at a concert or movie so that I don't need a bathroom break. I'd rather be starving with a dry mouth. Both concerts the ADir had to use the bathroom. Both times that was when SRV played the axe behind his back. One of the concerts was the Jeff Beck and SRV tour. They did Stevie Wonder's Supersticious together.
Stevie made that sound you asked “how did he do that without touching the guitar” by stepping on a foot pedal (sometimes called a wawa pedal) that actually once belonged to Jimi Hendrix. It was given to him by the Hendrix family after Jimi died.
This was Hendrix's song that SRV played very well. sometimes he was playing with just his left hand. Other times he was messing with foot pedals. He was like Kobe with a guitar and they died the same way.
Yup the pilot wasn't rated to fly I.F.R. so when they flew into a cloud, lost the true attitude of the helicopter, and flew into the ground!..smfh...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 👋🤠
Thanks, Justice.. this was Jimi's song.. but IMHO SRV covered this so well, I actually prefer his version.,.. (Stevie had great respect for Jimi, and covered several of his song...)up to you, fer sher.. love your reaction!... p.s. back the day, guitars had tools like the "whammy bar".. and of course there was the "wah-wah" pedal... lol
Stevie was a big fan of Jimi Hendrix. He covered 4 ofJimi's songs .. #VoodooChile .. #Manic Depression .. #Little Wing {Jimi's OG was recorded w/lyrics. Stevie did his entirely instrumental} and #Third Stone From the Sun. Jimi wrote #Voodoo Chile back in 1968 or 1969. The Stevie you are seeing here is the clean & sober, new & improved Stevie Ray Vaughan. IMO .. both men were GOATS in their own right. Their own genre of blues music. Jimi being psychedelic blues/rock and Stevie playing more Texas blues. Jimi was the innovator/master of the wah-wah peddle and adding the sound of distortion to music. Stevie was a master because he knew how to harness and clean up that same sound w/o loosing any of its originality. Stevie taught himself how to play guitar by ear at the age of 7. Unfortunately, we lost both men at very early ages. Jimi, first, at the age of 27, in London 1970. Then Stevie Ray at the age of 35 {5 wks before his 36th birthday} August 27, 1990 due to a helicopter crash into the side of a man-made ski hill after wrapping up a two-day blues festival w/ Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and his older brother Jimmy Vaughan. RIP J.H. & SRV
So excited live at the el mocambo, watched him play for three hours without stopping just unbelievable, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa Id rather go blind live, acdc ride on 😊😊😊
Something to think about is this is a 3 piece band. A lot of bands have a rhythm and a lead guitarists. Stevie is one that did both amazingly. The saddest thing is Stevie had a huge cocaine problem that he kicked and was playing better than ever when he got killed. Makes me wonder what if.
Though originally from Houston, I lived in Austin in the 80s and early 90s. Saw SRV a total of 8 times. Though Stevie got famous in Austin ( there's a statue of him there) he's originally from Dallas.
The age long dispute continues: who was better? Personally, I think Stevie was a better performer, but there will never be anyone more influential than Jimi. Every player who came after him, including his contemporaries and Stevie, was influenced by him. Even if they never heard of Jimi, they were influenced by someone who was influenced by him. Jimi changed everything. Stevie was the GOAT!
Hi JS, Mr. Stevie is using the Wah pedal to make that sound.. The Bar is the Tremelo Bar.. SRV was 35 when he did in 1990 using Eric Clapton's chopper.. ♠Mr.G..
Always do Stevie LIVE for sure! Thanks for the vid - for next vid, to see SRV get funky hit "Crossfire - From Austin" and for a slow blues master work definitely "Life Without You - Capital Theater" - Peace/
He's using what's called a wha wha peddle to make the sounds in the intro. He went directly to Jimi Hendrix's father to ask permission to record the song out of respect. Jimi's Dad gave him Jimi's peddle.
Stevie ENHANCED this song, in honor of Jimi. Hate to say it, but SRV has the best rendition of Voodoo Chile. He looks so cool when he’s playing. Fun to watch.
Stevie Ray asked Jimi’s father if he could play this song. Jimi sang it and wrote it but Stevie put his own mastery to the song. The wah wah pedal given to Stevie by Jimi’s family makes sense because he is the only one who could do the song justice after Jimi! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
LOVE THE REACTION!!!!!!!!!!!! :) “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
That sound is a "wah pedal" modulating the guitar tone by using his foot. @ 2:40 It makes the guitar tone "wah" like in the opening riff. Google "wah pedal" to see a picture and it will make more sense, its an essential tool in a guitar players rig.
There are no background guitars there! that's SRV playing lead and rhythm at the same time. this is from Austin City Limits, a TV show which explains the quality and the video size, it also allows the rarest look at the "Look At Little Sister" guitar swap which is buy a long shot the best ever seen. all other videos are zoomed in before the swap happens. the challenge is to close your eyes and know when the string breaks and when the swap happens.
you will see guitarists stomp their effects rigs, often. effects pedals are devices used to distort the sound of the instrument in various ways. my personal favorite is a bass played through a wah pedal. so funky.
Leaving a venue he performed with Eric Clapton and others, the helicopter failed to clear a f***ing pear tree and slammed into a ski slope 😢 RIP Stevie
You wouldn't wanted to shake his hand. He was using #13 strings. He was one of the few who ever used those. There is a new kid coming on who may rival the great ones. Taj Farrant is moving up quick and you can see a lot of SRV and Gary Moore in him. And this kid is only 14.
2:00-ish-I think the sound was already going from his last strum - then he is using a pedal to make it sound like that. I read somewhere he has Jimmy Hendrix pedal.
I normally do like cover tunes but there are some that do justice and there are a few that are even better and Jimmy is one of the best there is but i feel SRV blew this out of the water and for good reason that he loved Jimmy's music and wanted to make him proud 😉
Yeah he died in a helicopter crash in summer 1990, after a performance in Northern Illinois somewhere. He’s actually from Oak Cliff, a neighborhood in South Dallas… if there’s a silver lining in that, he had been sober for 3 years at the time…
That sound is called vibrato, you can create it by by shaking the neck or as he is doing here bouncing the guitar on his hip. You can do it with the whammy bar which you see hanging down behind the bridge.
👋🏻 hey Justice .. I lived in The Woodlands TX for a while (not the rich people part) and my mom still lives there. I miss the weather, BBQ, and lots of music venues within driving distance. 😅
Love me some stevie ray Vaughn! Please check out the only by static x! 😊 He also has pedals down for him to use. If you look youll see him step down and jiggle his foot on something for that part
Stevie does a version of Jimi’s song “Little Wing” you could maybe check out. It’s more “grown folks music”, lol but it’s very soulful. *the album version, not the live version
You 'hear" Stevie you don't listen to Stevie. There is a difference.
Hendrix was the innovator. Stevie was the master.
SRV = The G.O.A.T.
As far as blues, yup. He is the best of anyone strappin on a guitar. R.I.P. Stevie!
It is very brave to actually try to make a cover of this song. Many have tried and failed. SRV did not simply try, he pulled it off with the flag flying high. The only other guitarist I know of that has made this song justice is a Norwegian guitarist, Vidar Busk.

September 1970....
Greatest guitar player that ever lived
The "stick" is a whammy bar. Hendrix family gifted Stevie Jimi's wah wah pedal as well.Stevie was a huge Hendrix fan
Jimi unlocked the door ... Stevie kicked it wide open.
I was devastated when SRV died in 1990 when I was 20. The only celebrity death that has ever upset me more was Jim Henson (The Muppets and Sesame Street) earlier that year. SRV ~ 🎸🐐 The goatiest goat in all of goatness
**Life Without You at Capitol Theater**
S r v goat..

sometimes he was playing with just his left hand. Other times he was messing with foot pedals.
He was like Kobe with a guitar and they died the same way.
I've read that one of the pedals was the one Hendrix used, but I cannot confirm this.
SRV was Michael Jordan more than Kobe.
@@johnsambo9379 At basketball but not helicopters
Yup the pilot wasn't rated to fly I.F.R. so when they flew into a cloud, lost the true attitude of the helicopter, and flew into the ground!..smfh...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 👋🤠
Im a metalhead and SRV is still in my top 5 guitarists, i think that speaks volumes
Thanks, Justice.. this was Jimi's song.. but IMHO SRV covered this so well, I actually prefer his version.,.. Very few guitarists have the very rare gift of walking on stage closing their eyes oblivious to their surroundings and letting the music take over
SRV was so good he actually made “ Mary had a Little Lamb” Sound amazing lol
You need to check out Stevie doing "Look at little sister" on Austin City Limits
When he teams up with Jeff Healy for Little Sister, it's mind blowing.
Hendrix is the man that killed this first.. No one covered Jimi like SRV but made it his own & faster. R.I.P. Jimi & SRV. Great reaction.
"Back in the day" was at this show with my wife....Still coming down.
Cheers!

I am from Oak Cliff Texas. I am Stevie Ray's Little Sister. ❤❤
If Jimi was alive to hear this he would indeed say SRV KILLED IT!
So excited live at the el mocambo, watched him play for three hours without stopping just unbelievable, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa Id rather go blind live, acdc ride on 😊😊😊
Hi user, I like Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes "Stone Cold".. ♠Mr.G..
east of houston..glad you've found Stevie
Hey dude, great reaction! I’m from Fort Worth Texas and Stevie has a special place in my heart forever! RIP SRV
Thank you my Texan brother 💯
Stevie is the BOSS! GOAT!!! ❤❤❤❤
He was stepping on his phase shifter...
My favorites by SRV are his Hendrix cover of Little Wing ❤ and Life by the Drop.
yeah, from Austin Texas.... he was the bomb!
Stevie is the best blue rock player ever, unique ❤trio rock and also the voice is amazing❤i had saw him live in zürich switzeland 1986 ♥️
1:53 -- That's Jimi Hendrix's foot pedal.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!
He was taken from us on my 16th birthday 😭 Such a loss for the world and doubly so for us Texans
That was Hendrix’s WaWa pedal. Hendrix’ family gifted it t Vaughn after Jimmy died.
Texas in the house. I knew Stevie well. 😢
SRV is instantly recognizable! The gauge, tone and rhythmic element.
Hendrix playing Voodoo Child: 10/10
SRV playing Voodoo Child: 12/10
Hes a definite guitar God srv jimi and Eddie are all jammin what a session that would be
Haha, guy getting floored by Stevie. SRV is a super hero. He makes me proud to be American.
Though originally from Houston, I lived in Austin in the 80s and early 90s. Saw SRV a total of 8 times. Though Stevie got famous in Austin ( there's a statue of him there) he's originally from Dallas.
60s 70s 80s rock the best

Some trivia for you: Hendrix said that Staphen Stills was the best guitar player he had ever seen.
check out stevie ray vaugh and jimmie vaugh stevies big brother doing pipline
Have you reacted to Texas Flood - Live at the El Mocambo? If you haven’t yet, you need to.
I actually have check my page and you should see it😁
Stevie is from Texas. I was born in Houston.
This was one of srv tributes to Jimmy Hendrix. He was a big fan, but in my opinion he owned this song.
My favorite SRV song is Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland
He's a legend. Check out Eddie Van Halen, eruption solo live
The greatest to ever do it.
❤ from Arlington…SRV 🔥
Hi JS, Mr. Stevie is using the Wah pedal to make that sound.. The Bar is the Tremelo Bar..
SRV was 35 when he did in 1990 using Eric Clapton's chopper.. ♠Mr.G..
The sound Stevie makes while bending a long note at the beginning is done by switching on and off his wah wah pedal on the floor.
Always do Stevie LIVE for sure! Thanks for the vid - for next vid, to see SRV get funky hit "Crossfire - From Austin" and for a slow blues master work definitely "Life Without You - Capital Theater" - Peace/
He is a legend !Is still missed. I saw him in dallas wirh Bon Jovi, fantastic!!!!!!❤️
he is rocking back and forth on the wah wah pedal to create that sound without touching the strings
We call that a Whammy Bar, on his guitar.
He's using what's called a wha wha peddle to make the sounds in the intro. He went directly to Jimi Hendrix's father to ask permission to record the song out of respect. Jimi's Dad gave him Jimi's peddle.
I lived in Austin for about 20 years. You should visit SRV'S statue site. ACL or SXSW festivals are 🔥. ☮️💜🤘
Check out Jimis Voodoo Child live at Woodstock 1969! Best version
That little stick is called a tremolo bar AKA a whammy bar. It's there for tremolo and distortion.
Great reaction
Life without you live from the capital theater.
if you want more srv check "life without you" at capitol theather
Great choice....actually anything from that performance...
He used a "whah whah" peddle and the bar on his guitar is called a "whammy bar"
Stevie ENHANCED this song, in honor of Jimi. Hate to say it, but SRV has the best rendition of Voodoo Chile. He looks so cool when he’s playing. Fun to watch.

It is called a "whammy bar". It changes the tension on the strings by pulling a lever held against them.
🙌🏼🔥🔥

Stevie's playing a wah pedal with his foot. Jimi used a "Cry Baby" wah!
Stevie was using a Foot Pedal to get that sound that you were trying to figure out how. Before they were putting it on the Guitar 🎸.
2:00-ish-I think the sound was already going from his last strum - then he is using a pedal to make it sound like that. I read somewhere he has Jimmy Hendrix pedal.

Okay Yuengling what he is stepping on by the microphone is called a Wawa pedal do some research on the Wawa paddle😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
As does Stevie ray, most guitar players have an assortment of footpedals in front of them to give them effects for different songs.
Yeah he died in a helicopter crash in summer 1990, after a performance in Northern Illinois somewhere. He’s actually from Oak Cliff, a neighborhood in South Dallas… if there’s a silver lining in that, he had been sober for 3 years at the time…
Gary Moore did a live version of this song which is worth watching
Somewhere I read Jimi Hendrix wrote VooDoo Child.
Foot pedals,unseen at Stevie's feet
Jimi may have written it but Stevie owned it
From Galveston. Live in Colorado now.
That sound is called vibrato, you can create it by by shaking the neck or as he is doing here bouncing the guitar on his hip. You can do it with the whammy bar which you see hanging down behind the bridge.

Love me some stevie ray Vaughn! Please check out the only by static x! 😊 He also has pedals down for him to use. If you look youll see him step down and jiggle his foot on something for that part
texas flood live at the el macombo. do that one
Stevie does a version of Jimi’s song “Little Wing” you could maybe check out. It’s more “grown folks music”, lol but it’s very soulful.

Okay it’s been a while since I listened I’ll try it
Cool man, I guess the live version is good too, so either/or, lol.
Check out SRV "Riviera Paradise"
Check Out SRV Crossfire
Check out the godmother of Afrobeats covering this.
Angelique Kidjo.
That little stick is a Wang Bar.
He is using a 'wha wha' foot pedal to make that sound as did Hendrix.
