I am in Liverpool England. Practically walking distance from Hambleton Hall in Page Moss. The Beatles played it regularly in early 1960 Now sadly demolished. It became a probation and a DHSS bulding. Always walk past where it stood and I say to myself. The greatest rock stars in history played in that spot. My girlfriend just thinks I am mad, Been in awe of the Beatles all my life but could never play or sing Beatles songs like you can. Fantastic Lessons and Thanks. Tony from the pool.
Nice comment but I grew up in Liverpool Sydney, a working clas suburb at least when I lived there, but I noticed you say "the pool" when we called it "Livo". All the best.
You are hands down the best Beatles song teacher in my opinion. I struggle with covers and you have a way that just works for me. Words can't describe my gratitude. I found you through your Don't let me down tutorial, which is amazing. Currently I'm working a seven day week and struggle to play any guitar but soon I'll have time and intend to put these tutorials to practice. Until then I'll just enjoy them anyway. Really good work 👍
It’s amazing to think that this song was recorded at the end of a long day...with John singing with a cold/sore throat! The amount of energy that you feel from this performance...just wow!🤩
Yes amazing but they were a hard working band and were pretty seasoned by this recording I think. Amazing to see Paul even now hardly drinks during his performances!
Wish I had these videos 30 years ago when I was first learning how to play. So many bad habits to unlearn, but having lots of fun learning all my favorite songs.
William Gray - That's very kind of you. I got up at 6am the day I recorded it - screamed my brains out for an hour trying to rip up my vocal cords before I attempted it. I could barely speak for the rest of the day! lol
@@MPfrance Wow!! Better cover of his vocal than most of the "Johns" I've heard in Beatles tribute bands!! You nailed it!! Thank you for the post. I'm a guitar player in an all around cover band and was missing the subtle parts that really make Twist And Shout sound right!!
@@MPfrance John said in Anthology pretty the same. He just couldn't sing it, so he screamed that devil's song, and at the end he damaged his voice, of course, and couldn't even speak like you.
Arsen Vlasov - I was hoarse for the rest of the day when I recorded my vocal attempt. I videotaped the lesson part two days later when my voice returned.
What an ear! I've listened to that song a thousand times, even saw them live in '65 - there's no way that I would have picked up that level of detail, ever. Brilliant again!
Twist and Shout opens the Beatles live at Hollywood Bowl album. The Rave up vocals are to me one of the great moments in 1960's music which is saying a lot. I always crank it and get chills. They hit every note and make every pitch jump seem easy. Then they cap it with ascending "shouts." I've played it for younger people and ask "who on Earth do you think can do that?" Only the Fab Four could pull that off live. And then the guitar double stops are typical Beatles perfection. Great job Mike. Really enjoy your recent vids-- tres cool
BattlinBuck - That's kind of you. I was a bit embarrassed to post it 'cuz John is SO amazing on it. But do know - I ripped my voice up for an hour before I tried to sing it - was completely hoarse for the rest of the day.
Mike, a great breakdown of this song. I really appreciate your attention to detail and the hard work that must have taken. I am a 65 year old guitarist and like many other guitarists my age I can testify that the Beatles were the reason I play today and I must say this was one of the best remakes of the song I have heard in all those years. Keep up the great work and Thank You!
John's singing in that song will always be the most iconic rock n roll screaming/singing ever in history as far as I am concerned. Your vocals captured the fun, youthful 23 year old Beatles standing on stage with 50,000 screaming girls, and 10,000 laughing men (because the girls were screaming so loud) in the audience. Sometimes lots lots more.
I have been following your videos since early on, Mike. Your clarity, correctness, and enthusiasm are outstanding teaching virtues. Thanks. In the 1980, 3 other guitar-playing friends decided to form a serious Beatles cover band. We did mostly pre-moustache Beatles, and a lot much of the first 3 albums. I was the only guitarist in the band with any experience playing drums (long ago, my brother the drummer's kit), so I volunteered to play Ringo's drum parts. I learned fast and got as deeply into Ringo's playing as a right-hander could go. The band played local gigs on the SF peninsula for 8 years. In all that time, I never learned a single song on guitar. So I went back to playing guitar and writing songs with friends. Ten years later I got invited to join some hot players who were playing a lot of Beatles songs and other covers from the 60s, recording and gigging locally. Not only did they want me to play drums, but the fantastic guitarist who lead the band always played a standard guitar upside down, Hendrix-style. I sat across from in rehearsals watched him for years but never learned a thing! It was all upside down. That band broke up after many years and I returned to playing guitar and writing songs with other friends. As I had been doing since the mid-60s when I first heard the Beatles and picked up a guitar for the first time, I continued as a guitarist. Now I have my own band, mostly playing my originals at local venues, but we have started to mix in some Beatles songs. (These are especially for the audience members who don't listen to the music, but only hear it.) I mentioned your lessons to the lead guitarist in my band. Now he wants to replace my songs with Beatles songs! I blame you. But now I can learn the John Lennon parts with the same seriousness I brought to learning to play like Ringo in the that first Beatles band 40 years ago. So, thanks!
I follow all your vids. Great stuff. This vid brought back some great memories. I had the pleasure of playing this song for John & Yoko in August of '79 in Tokyo. I did my impression of him and he loved it. They stayed for 3 hours. He was in a great mood... He said something that night that I'm sure you will like... He said... "All musicians are my friends"
You are very kind but I am not a fan of my voice. Truth be told, I never like anybody’s voice singing the Beatles. John and Paul had such charming voices. Their personal charm came through even when they were screaming. Nobody has ever gotten close to that in my humble opinion.
@@MPfrance I agree with you, nobody can reproduce the original charm of their voices, they are amazing singers and they can sing in a way that makes their compositions shine even more. But your voice does justice to a good interpretation of Twist and Shout, which is not an easy song! Also, I honestly believe you are a very good educator and I respect that very much. So, cheers to you and cheers to John and Paul!
Very informative, particularly seeing both parts of the solo. Most of all, glad I hung on for the last few minutes... Was hoping you would perform the complete song... And wow that was an immense vocal performance!
Wow Mike...I love your passion for the Beatles and their music. I was 11 yrs. old when the whole nation was watching on Feb. 9, 1964. Your passion matches mine...or my passion matches yours. Another great video from you.
Very impressed with everything here, Mike, but especially your VOCALS!!! You know and I know that those vocals are ANYTHING BUT EASY. And Paul's primal (yet musically beautiful) scream is THE BEST scream in rock history: PERIOD!!!!!!!! Thanks for your video.
That was awesome! Your vocals at the end was a perfect touch to your love and detail of a great band and song! From Cleveland Ohio the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Thanx Mate!
We started learning this song in my music class, and initially I was thinking it's kind of lame - just a three chord song. But that's because I can't dissect it and see all the nuances that Mike brings! After watching this I'm totally stoked to be learning it. And I agree, that was an insane vocal!
❤️ this and all your stuff. Please don’t apologize for your singing. In my amateur opinion (like most listeners) you are terrific. Really love all your stuff. Not just the music- back story is always great. If we weren’t super interested in the Beatles, we wouldn’t be here in the first place. Cheers.
Wow, that was terrific Mike! Your vocals were spot on mate, just amazing. The Beatles were & always will be musical magic to my ears. Thanks for keeping their music alive. Be well & stay safe...👍😉
They used to open with this song, what a vocal cord warmer !! Excellent rendition of it by yourself I must say , considering they had young vocal chords when they sang it all those years ago👌🏻😊
Fantastic performance Mike, great job ! This is one of those songs I've always thought is simple and never bothered looking at the detail....you've just straightened out more than a dozen mistakes !
Great lesson Mike.... I heard John commented one time that he had permanently strained his vocal cords on that one. Indeed, he sang the livin' shit out of it. Thanks for posting.
Your too modest Mike, that was an excellent cover both vocally and musically!.. Thank you for all your efforts with these Beatle and other postings, really appreciate it! - James 🎸
That singing was actually amazing.

One of my all time favorite Beatles recordings. Thanks for breaking it down. Imma gonna twist and shout now, baby!
Have fun!
You are the best, not only you show how to play, but those stories about Beatles.. Love from Russia
While I appreciate Mike's humility, I think he sings it just as amazingly as John! Time to make some singing tutorials, Mike!

Learning guitar in my late 50's and have always loved the Beatles, great instructions as usual Mike.
You’re the best for bringing us the Beatles’ best !! Thanks yet again!
My pleasure!
The 7th Beatle long live the Italian . Master .

Excellent. You captured the excitement of The Beatles version.
Always great work, Mike! Greetings from Nashville.
Many thanks!
Michael you have the energy style to sing like John, congratulations and thank you for the interesting and useful guitar lesson.
Nothing silly about having fun! Very good, Mike! And that high e-note in the middle of the solo... I think you're right! Never noticed before
