- Tokyo Motor Show Series Part 5 of 5
It’s not all about cars. Japan is developing a wide variety of electric transport systems. From massive trucks to tiny bikes.

Just binge watched all 5 videos. Never been to Tokyo Motor Show in my lifetime. Never been to Tokyo in my lifetime. Most likely will never make the trip in my lifetime as well. Thank You FullyCharged for this experience.
Jonny's enthusiasm is contagious. His humor invigorates the discussion and keeps one focused. IMO really good choice for hosting/presenting this series. Humorist, historian and youthful passion for the subject. Way to go Jonny.
Very binge worthy. I would encourage Fully Charged to send Johnny to more shows around the world.
Agreed!
Richard Wright .... what??? Hypocritical or what. This is supposed to be a show about lowering emissions not jetting all around the world while telling everyone to quit destroying the planet.
This commentator is a GREAT addition to the channel. Knowledgeable with a cheeky sense of humor. Best combo you can ask for!
Steve Martin Jonny has been a car reviewer/TV presenter for many years in the UK. I agree, he's very good at his craft and clearly does alot of background work before the camera is turned on.
He was a presenter on a car show called fifth gear so knows his stuff
He has always been the best part of dreadful car shows. Good to see him in a good show.
I just finish the 5th episode and I loved it. The multi episodes idea can work when there's a big event.
I'm starting to like this show a lot. Mostly YT channels are coupled with really bad camera angles, but this is just like normal TV. Just look at how nice the cameraman filmed from 14:10. Amazing. And Johnny is the cherry on the top. Needs more views
This mini-series idea for large events is great. I've seen many other channels cover big tech shows and they do one of 2 things. They upload 20 or so little videos a day as the event is going which leads to a notification bomb, or they spread longer videos out across their normal schedule which means you're watching coverage of the same event for like 2 weeks before normal content resumes!
This way is perfect for your format and certainly shows the benefits of having 2 presenters. Send one to cover an event on the other side of the world while the other works on producing the normal weekly content.
This series also hammers home Jonny's presenting skills. He's shown great enthusiasm as well as being a thorough and thoughtful interviewer. I think if anyone had doubts about him, these videos will prove them wrong!
Props are also very much due to the camera and editing work in this series and other recent videos. This is proper big TV budget quality in both presenting and filming. I hope this channel continues to grow and provide more people with quality, entertaining and informative pieces!
- I for one like the yellow hi-tops
Many many thanks for taking me to the Tokyo Motor Show! You’ve set a review standard that’s going to be hard to top!
Love the video love the fact that you guys are showing vans and trucks something most people who covered Tokyo car show didn't even bothered.
Johnny is such a perfect presenter for videos like this on Fully Charged. Love it!
Wow.. what more can I say but Wow! World class production, world class presentation. Well worth the Patron contribution.
The presenter is in my opinion one of the best in the field, I keep regretting not checking any new videos because of the presenter
Thank you Jonny and Mark for showing me the TMS, I've just binged all of the episodes and they were fantastic.
It fills me with hope that change is on the way at last and despair that as a middle aged working class Australian, I may never have access to these products. Great work though, cheers for that.
Very cool intro shot @ 0:30 of camera following guy walking up to the building then panning up, and up, and up. Informative and entertaining. Great combo. Nicely done gents.
Just being pedantic here, but Yamaha's logo is tuning forks because they've been a musical instrument company for over 100 years. It has nothing to do with their engines being quiet.
They only started making motorcycles after World War 2.
Actually, since there isn’t a grand piano option on this bike. The tuning forks does “symbolizes” the EV engine as he was making an analogy to.
Actually, it represents 3 sets of chop sticks for takeout. (one's a spare because they will undoubtedly drop one) 😀
Actually the symbol represents the brand name *Yamaha*
Shades of Koyaanisqatsi in the intro...
Love it, cool tempo and paced just right. Thank you to all the F.C. team.
Great production, great host.
If I smoked, i’d need to light up now...
Thank you so much for covering commercial vehicles. Very interesting, important, and relevant.
Robert, Jonny & the whole team, you are doing a fantastic job. This show is something else (just wow). I can now go to bed fully charged & very happy. Thank You! ps: binge-watching never felt so good :)
Love the EV food truck with the camper 'bump-out' and the Yamaha quad bike. Great video!!!
Made it this far and yah... binged it. Love you guys. Lots of hard work put into this!
Just binged watch every vid 1to5!!! Brilliant!!! Simply Brilliant. More please. Urban Honda looks amazing.
It is great to see all things electric on this channel including trucks.
Enjoyed this little series for the Tokyo event, even seeing the non-ev or hybrid stuff was interesting.
Brilliant format to release multiple short videos from big events! Thanks.
OMG loved the ending, but also the look Jonny got at the beginning entering the van in his yellow shoes. :-D
What a great coverage of the TMS! Jonny was the perfect guy for the crazy Japanese big city life... ;-)
I'm in love with the micro-kitchen on wheels. Such a lovely idea!
Funny how the street food car got his attention. Great Video!
Not gonna be able to pace myself. Let the binge begin!
whoops, wrong order
That kitchen unit can is a brilliant concept. The 35 km (22 mile) range is presumably only if you don't use the electricity for heating, cooling and lighting the kitchen tools? Make it bigger, and give it a 100kWh battery and it will be a really viable vehicle for the mobile kitchen, the burger van , the ice cream salesman and others. Thanks Johnny.
Food trucks typically have electrical and water hookups where they park. So it could power its various appliances while still recharging its battery for when it next needs to relocate.
RWBHere -- I agree! Especially when it comes to specialty food trucks that focus on one particular type of food that can be prepared and sold by a single individual, these things are great! A perfect replacement for the sort of food carts that must be towed behind a pickup truck to fairs, concerts, and other events.
I've seen some using generators or sharing them. Anyway it shouldn't be much different from standard food truck.
Very slick reporting Johnny! Love the oldschool notebook ;-)
"What if you wanted crabs?....Not like that!" Nice one Jonny :-D
i would love to see more of these longer productions. wow amazing work guys!
Something that came to mind while watching this: As far as delivery vans are concerned, you might want to check out DHL and Streetscooter. Maybe even make an episode out of those. DHL should have quite a lot of real, experience based data by now. Would be quite interesting to get some real user info.
Yes, the Streetscooter is well worth an episode of Fully Charged. Practical innovation electric vehicle urban distribution, in use NOW :)
DHL Germany uses E-Cargo bikes with swap bodies.
UPS in downtown NY also .....
agreed, vans, trucks and busses...well needed
If I was to rate the videos from best to least favorite I'd have to go with the Motorbikes and Trucks, Honda Concepts, Car Tech, and the Concept 1&2 in last.
I'm in agreement in the idea that we need to be mindful of how our products are brought and delivered to us instead of just how we get around because the vehicles that move our product from place to place are on the roads much more than we are and should be leading the way in having a cleaner and more economic way.
Johnny's walkthrough at 7:39 is a great peace and testament to his preparation with a reflection of the talent between him and his filming partner Mark. I thought the last food bit at the last ten seconds was unnecessary and sort of put me off a bit after watching a well made video.
The MVC4 concept bike from Yamaha was very cool and I enjoyed the attention it was given.
Overall, I can say I didn't "binge" all five in one sitting as I split it up 3 and 2 but I think it's great to get a big dose of content all at once to soak in and think about here and there. I think the one or maybe 2 videos a week is still my preferred way of watching Fully Charged as I enjoy the anticipation of the upcoming episode. My best to the Fully Charged team in 2018.
WOO! I have survived the Fully Charged 5 out of 5 marathon!
lovely johnny that you are integrated in this very channel
Fully Charged, as a biker currently riding a BMW R1200GS with a ZOE in the family I really want my next big bike to be electric. Can you consider getting someone on the team to concentrate on the electric m’bike scene, raising its profile as you have done with cars a other tech. Great videos that we watch as a family - keep up the good work.
They can't cover it if companies aren't making it. And much to my disappointment the electric motorcycle has been left behind a bit, especially in the uk where government focus is all on bigger vehicles. Zero are probably the most developed company and have only 4 dealer/partners in uk. Yamaha PES Street sport concept has been doing the rounds for a couple of years but might have been good if it were there as would the adnroid bike they have made, but I think that might be all they missed, but they only have so much time and editorial decisions have to be made.
over the course of the show I think the ktm freeride might be the only major manufacturer bike they haven't covered and that's learner legal.
I want my bike to be loud AF no electrics
Enjoyed it. Thanks for posting!
:}
Interesting, both the Japanese Auto Show and the sence of humor n style of the presenter........
:}
In Jersey, Channel Islands most of our Utility vans (postal, electric company) are electric. makes a huge difference and the deliver drivers and workers love them 😁
Tokyo's such a beautiful city.
You should definitely do an episode about the vintage-styled electric motorcycles from Super Soco, plus the English Electric Motor Co. They've been doing some pretty interesting things over here in the UK.
I love Robert but Hiring Jonny was a master stroke. I also think the channel will take off this year. I've noticed once channels break 200k they seem to get a critical mass per video that gets more viral hits and more views outside the bse.
The thing to notice is they are both as crazy as a box of frogs, subtly differently crazy, clever, and professional with just enough bits of "did I say that out loud!"
"more views outside the bse."
I can guarantee that I've never had British beef.
One of the comments on the Honda video called him “gullible” for getting so excited about concepts. But it’s so refreshing to see someone who appreciates and enjoys the art behind developing a car. Everywhere else it’s just people moaning about electric cars not having “soul” or writing off concept EVs as if they mean nothing at all. He understands car culture and has such a positive attitude.
Jamie Ross
Seems the EV boom took of like Elon's Falcon 9. The red carpet is laid out in favor of Fully Charged
I enjoy Robert and Jonny for different reasons. Robert's charisma and whimsical attitude, and humor of course, is the main draw for me. But then Jonny comes in to give a detailed rundown of a vehicle's technical specs in a sober, sedate way that's easily digestible. Sort of a funny man/straight man comedy duo, but as informative as it is entertaining.
i love the walk and take part and the part about post man pat that mde my day
gulid mohammed - What do you know about postman Pat and his black and white cat?
I've got to say, I had almost given up with this show until this guy took over. This was really interesting, well shot and his jokes were laugh out loud. Great stuff, now all we need is Brian Cooly to get back to roadshow and my UA-cam list will be complete.
Again, fantastic video. Incorporating the show/launch location into the videos story is something no enough channels do.
Great work guys! loved the coverage & also shout out to the video editing, Spot on
Love the mobile kitchen van. But needs to be taller for the European market I'm 6'4 I'd be crippled working in that.
Another great video this channel needs and deserves more subscribers.
There are several electric cars out there, nowadays ...but there are many other types of vehicles that are still mainly fossil fuel based, such as vans, lorries and the like, which comprise a lot of the traffic in the world. As such, it's nice to see so many companies developing electric version of them. The Tesla Semi, is far from alone.
Thanks Johnny. Really enjoyable. Appreciate your manner and delivery. Great to have a glimpse at what the future may hold. I’m in Australia and tech is slow to reach here. Love the release of five episodes to cover a Range and a little in-depth and this and that. Honda is going to be able to print money with their designs. Less is more for sure. Good to see the truck manufacturers are going to try and play along with the change game and give Tesla some competition.
Keep up the high production value and thank you for not turning up in a suit. Stay underdressed. I love the down to earth delivery. Well done. 👏🏼😄
That slider roach coach truly is a star. Needs to be bigger in the States, though.
Great to see van and lorry news
Gotta love Johnny rapping at 8:57 xD I'd listen to that.
PostNL in the Netherlands has had electric delivery vehicles for a long time. Hopefully this kind of tech makes it around the world soon. *cough* Canada *cough*
I couldn't agree with you more!! Drove past the Canada Post warehouse the other day and saw a whole bunch of trucks with their hoods open for the nightly engine maintenance and thought to myself, if they were electric that would not be necessary.
Well, maybe a few in some city areas, but since the privatisation :/ , it's all on money and external deliveries.
So full throttle diesel large vans racing. Also thx to all the internet buying.
Never actually thought of that but damn, that's true too!
well yeah but the netherlands is ideal for this. small area highly populated. it will be a long time before this will be world wide
Very true, density has a lot of positive aspects in this regard. :)
5 vids at once, great idea more of this please!
Those little square carriers from ep 1 would make great Postman Pat vans.
- Those Fuso and Isuzu trucks are actually long-range class in Japan. They don't have huge semi trucks like US (don't know UK ?)
- The chiller van and moped do most of the intra-city stuff. They use mopeds to deliver packages, pizza/food ... even product delivery from distribution centers to convenience stores like FamiMa, Daily, Lawsons, etc. (which are used as much or more than proper grocery stores).
- Street food stalls are very popular across Japan - but they have to be gone by morning. So those little motorized kitchens make a lot of sense. When I saw them tear down / set up in Fukuoka they used those mini-pickups made by Mitsubishi to bring in wooden stalls and haul them away; like 3cyl engines. This would compartmentalize the process significantly...
It'd be interesting to see what could be done with that Yamaha bike in SE Asia. They use a lot of trikes and stuff for transport. Part of me worries it'd never catch because there's too much downtime they'd have to kill at a charge station. There's a lot of down time now, but they choose opportune spots scattered around to find pedestrians looking for a ride... if you were locked into an EV they'd all be located in 1 spot.
But all those trikes, jeepneys, etc. seem ideal replacement for EV too. Esp Jeepney now that I think about it. And so much better QoL for the driver (and everyone else)
9:05 where I live in Germany all of the small town postal centres have got fully Electric Package Delivery Vans that always woosh around the Village
These are the types of vehicles that are needed at these times..it can be an amphibian that can respond to communities at times of need, specially flood prone areas, waiting restoration and siphoning standards of excessive water trapped in some communities, since it knows that it can generate the added treated water and for energy use as well. IONIC CONFIGURATIONS/NON DEVALUED Investments. Don't delete this is IMPORTANT. Thank you.
Bikes? Where were the bikes? One concept hybrid from Yamaha is not bikes especially if it has a roof and four wheels. No mention of the Honda self balancing bike at all. Would love to see a fullycharged on just electric bikes. There are already a lot in production from sport bikes that set world recods at pikes peak to full on motocross and everythin inbetween. PS. love your work.
Great video. Austrian Post has already got electric postal vans... loads of them.. there're brilliant.
The Yamaha MWC4 concept looks amazing!
Excellent show yet again. I wish I could take part in an episode with you.
All electric ice cream van would be fantastic with solar panel on the roof kids would love it.
Beautiful music in all Tokyo episodes
8:35 it's the same with boats, loads of regulation for leasure boats, but it's canal boats that produce most of the pollution.
(last I heard about it was almost a decade ago though, so it might have changed)
I was expecting a review about that bike at 09:32, that bike was cool.
That yamaha mwc-4 is an absolute beauty. Would buy it tomorrow if was available now
The MWC-4 kinda reminds me of a glam version of those tadpole leaning-trike mopeds the Met had around 2010
What an amazing show! I love everything about the show.
Local postal deliveries (last 5k so to speak) in Switzerland being made by posties on electric trikes.
of all the motor show tokyos more rational and logical i have seen!
French post office... Over 20.000 EV vans and growing
the German Post office has an impressive fleet of EV's as well. they bought an EV builder and are developing it themselves because the market couldn't deliver it in the quantity that they needed/wanted. these companies could be interesting for a future episode. as a professional driver myself i am very interested in E-trucks and vans.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-41025771
Yeah, postal services here in France aren't great but they're getting green pretty fast
Of course, the UK had been using vast fleets of electric flatbed delivery vehicles - the humble milk float - for decades upon decades.
But, simply, market realities changed.
Rather than having fresh milk delivered quietly by electric milk float in the mornings - using glass bottles, which the milkman would also collect, providing fully recyclable packaging - folks started buying their milk in plastic bottles from the local supermarket / convenience store instead.
I still get my milk delivered by a milkman and, truth is, he's had to switch from electric to a petrol van simply because he has less customers spread out over a wider distance. Also, he delivers the milk in plastic bottles - again, because insufficient people have milk deliveries anymore to economically justify the whole glass bottle recycling scheme.
We can see a similar dilemma for the post office. Their once primary trade - delivering letters - is in freefall decline. Because, for simple communication, email and phones can do the job better.
So they've had to adapt and shift towards becoming delivery agents for online shopping. Bringing us the packages and parcels that we order off the Internet.
The pace of technological change has, unfortunately, in some places created these regressions. As the realities of "supply and demand" change, the economics change and this makes some things more economically viable - post offices rolling out electric fleets - but it can sometimes go in the other direction too - the humble milkman, once the vanguard of both electric delivery and of recycling, before either concept was trendy, has found the economics of fewer customers has caused a regression in their once exemplary delivery model.
Also, everyone buying their milk from the supermarkets didn't just screw over the milkman, but also the milk producers, because it gave supermarkets an effective monopoly and they just kept driving the price down, putting many dairy farmers out of business.
I guess my point here is that consumers ought to consider the wider ramifications of their choices. They are not consequence free.
I knew I'd read something about Royal Mail EVs recently. They're a bit behind, but at least they're thinking about it and moving in the right direction. If a little slowly.
Wonderful series, thanks very much!
Well I kind of missed the Tesla Semi, otherwise another great tour.
Your attitude and approach to the subject is perfect and enjoyable - Really Great that you went with fully Charged.
I do think that if there are as many electric vans for last mile delivery it will make significant reductions in noise in cities as well. The pollution reduction will be a significant bonus.
For the truck operators the reduction of costs would be prime but maintenance costs would be lower as well.
This is better than the Grand Tour.
There, I said it.
Such a great professional film.. excellent 👏🏻
I totally agree, the camera work is on point!
Totally captivating video! Thank you!
MWC 4 huge thumbs up for that, but it needs two entry points so you don't get stuck if someone parks too close on one side.
BLOODY BRILLIANT
11:30 - I'm pretty sure Yamaha's 'tuning fork logo' stems from their musical instrument roots, not engine quietness!
Jet-lagged Johnny is hilarious
Top series, thanks!
On a recent trip to Beijing I was surprised to find all delivery vehicles and motorcycles are electric. Also many cabs are electric.
Not at all what I was expecting.
Apparently they achieved such a dramatic change in vehicle mix by making registration free for electric vehicles.
Now there’s an idea we could copy.
The Yamaha bike thing is mesmerizing
I use an env200 as a multidrop delivery vehicle already.... I drive 30 miles to Liverpool do 100 drops while I’m there and then drive the 30 Miles back on a daily basis, these things work well. Yes I have to charge at nissan in crosby for 30 minutes halfway through my day but I need the break anyway. I total 120 Miles a day emission free. Would love the new 40kw version as then I could use the heater too.
Hexagonal delivery is great.... as long as everyone buys the same size item.
Yes! Trucks and Vans. Also more taxi and busses would be interesting. Sick tired on all unpractical sports cars and ultra compact. I want a commercial value to them EV-concept.
I would've liked to know about the mirrors on the truck, how they would solve countries like mine where trucks need 5 mirrors. Front, side front and normal backwards.
7:38 Epic speech about the importance of electric delivery vans.
Loved the 5 episode release! What was the Koyaanisqatsi-esque music at the end?
Tesla has some competition it seems, excellent! :D
Unfortunately that's not the case. These cars will come out in 2-3 years and the range will be lower than what Tesla will be offering then (and maybe less than the range they are offering now).
The cars are beautiful though and will sell well if Honda puts some real effort into it.
izybit not true the likes of Nissan Toyota and Chevy are leading the way in EV's sell's and tec, with VW and BMW catching up with by investing large too, But i am a big Musk Tesla fan and hope he can keep growing like he needs to!
hardergamer Bolt is a direct competitor (to Model 3) and Leaf 2019 will be as well. Everything else is pretty much a bit or a lot worse (be it range, space, etc).
Since this episode was mostly about delivery vans and chassis trucks, I don't see how Tesla is even relevant to the discussion. They have nothing in this space.
@5:45 Solar panels don't make more electricity in hotter climates, but with more sunshine.
Johnny. Big Bird called. He wants his shoes back. 🐤
Loving the intro.
What's the weight penalty on the EV-trucks compared to a diesel version? This affects the load capacity due to weight restrictions on roads. This in turn affects the pay back time for the owner, which is nearly all they care about.
Nice presentation ... from someone in W-s-M ... :)
That girl had some moves!
