Barn Find 41 Plymouth! E:3 First start in 50 years!

- This is day three of our barn find rescue, project Chicken Coupe. After playing a little bit with the valves we finally got the engine to fire! Not only fire but run! 1941 Plymouth special deluxe.

Old Geezer Gearhead here. I do believe that year was the first year for the single stop light in the trunk lid. When I was still in high school, 1960, I had a 1949 Plymouth Special DeLuxe. That was the last year for the single stop light in the trunk lid. BTW, my father, who was a professional auto mechanic from the 'T' days, had a '41' Ply. 4 door. The last rip that I can remember in that '41' as a kid was from Paterson, NJ, to Atlantic city for summer vacation. thank you for these videos.

Hi, from Sydney, Australia. I love your 41 Plymouth, I love the patina! I wish they were assembled here. I have a 39 Plymouth sedan, RHD model assembled in Sth.Australia. One thing you might, or should put on the list is, is to replace the water distribution tube, behind the water pump, which helps cool the valves. They all rust out! Give it a good flush out while its out, and it might pay to take out the five welsh plugs on the side and give it a good flush too. I had so much rusty crud in my block. I only hope for your sake the rear engine welsh plug is okay. Mine was weeping, and to get to it you'll have to take the engine out. But you will figure it out along the way. Andy's Dog House we had a good bit of penetrating fluids it had to burn through and some seafoam. So she smoked a good bit lol

Yeah it had soaked for days with marvel fluid and seafoam. Everything from the cylinders, to the manifold was soaked in the stuff. Stuff is still burning off on every start up.
I live for this stuff...

6 volt vehicles were most often positive ground to help prevent corrosion from forming on the wire connectors. Have you ever noticed that corrosion usually forms most on the positive terminal? Those "Old Guys" actually did know something.
shout-out from New Zealand,good work,learn as u turn.can i suggest you go back to your valves and guides,every flathead ive had responded to a valve job,when they are ground in and lapped,adjusted and cleaned correctly,your motor will start and run so much better.probably find all the valve seats are pitted.dont forget the water-pump-mostly over-looked but very essential.im very envious-we dont have anything like this left here in NZ

A wet and dry compression test will help guide you to next steps. All that cranking with 12V on the 6V starter, it's going to take a toll.
Keith Barron the starter is ok it’s last leg and doesn’t work half the time. But, we actually have sent it out to get rebuilt now that the motor is running well and cranking properly.

The 41 with a few body mods is the nicest hotrod I've ever seen. Plan on building one with a all aluminum ford 3.0 DOHC I want something different and the engine is out of my grandfather's last car 99 taurus ugly car but beautiful powerful engine. Just hopping a FWD engine will mate with RWD transmission?

The sniper efi swap is really straight forward. The hardest part was just plumbing the fuel pump and figuring out what part of the harness you want to run. No more cutting wires. No more either. Use a remote starter button. Please
Re-install the original Sediment bulb as it not only filters, but separates water as well. Locate a reputable starter/generator repair shop. Have both the original starter and generator rebuilt. Do not under any circumstances change to 12 volt. Doing so will mess up your gages and anything else electrical. With proper connections and good grounds these 6 volt cars will easily start in below zero weather. I have a couple that cheerfully start at -20. Leave the distributor alone. Just replace the contact set (points) and condenser. Set point gap at .020. Replace the vacuum advance if necessary. You have a beautiful, nearly complete, original Plymouth. Anyone can screw it up. Don't be that anyone. The Voltage regulator polarizes Battery to Field. There are tons of parts out there and knowledgeable people to help in the Mopar pages on FB.

The oil filter/ sediment bowl is definitely on the list to get put back on. Someone many years ago crimped off the lines and deleted it. Unsure why? We have pulled the can for now but fully intend to replace it. Our intention is to keep it 6 volt. We had thoughts in the beginning of a 12 volt conversion but a single quote on a web forum changed our mind. "6V won WWII it's good enough for me". Insider info, as of today the starter has been rebuilt by a local shop and the generator will be getting done soon.
Jay Leno says well maintained 6 volts are adequate for these old cars. He said smart guys designed them. He is right for unmodified cars. I had a buddy in Calgary with a 49 Plymouth stock, it would start when way below zero.

Oil bath filters are better than paper filters imagine back in the early 40's most of America's roads were dirt roads only few were paved and oil bath filters kept all that dirt out of the engine and they went to paper elements when most of the roads were paved but you run a car down a loose dirt road with a paper element and see how long it lasts. you would be be changing them everyday because they would be clogged right up.
