  • 1995 to 2010, these 15 years defined my gaming taste. Modern games don't get me excited any more, yet I'll still grin like a madman while thinking about Burnout 3. Why is this so?
I'm going back to retro gaming, and here's 10 reasons why you should to!

I don't know if you have STM memory issues, but LTM - definitely. Point me to ONE PC (specifically) shooter (I consider consoles since PS2 era a bane on the entire gaming industry) shooter from the old days (go back to ID's masterpiece Wolfenstein 3D even) that YOU UNLOCK cheats by beating it. CHEATS were always CHEATS - and especially in Game Genie stuff.
Today we have trainers, so your point is moot at best, pointless at worst.

    • @RetroRangerReviews88

I’m mainly referring to games like tony hawk skateboarding, uncharted, driver. Games where you unlock game altering tweakers. But also, codes hammered in on the menu that give you an advantage. I don’t understand how my point is moot because I can’t name a PC shooter that unlocks cheats from wolfenstein era. I appreciate your perspective and thanks for watching!

I remember when unlockables in games meant something. Rather than just buying DLC and when DLC wasn't mandatory. I'm from the 90s too! I didn't start gaming until about 1996.

and game devs were just better back then. they had limited tech to work with but managed to make these amazing and really fun games back then.
aaa games these days feel like they're made by ai, and lack the heart and soul games had back then.
indie devs are the modern exception. indie games excite me more now, because they feel like those amazing classics i miss. they may not have the visual flair that aaa games do, but the art style is often better and they're more fun.
games like hollow knight, dead cells, slay the spire, and cuphead gave me far more hours of enjoyment than most modern aaa games. and indie devs will just keep getting better, while aaa devs continue to get worse.
indie devs are my only hope for the future of gaming. i have a dozen emulators on my phone and have been playing a lot of old games i never played before. the ds and psp have a lot of surprisingly amazing games, especially the ds.
i just got a new phone that can even handle a lot of dreamcast, gamecube, and ps2 games. i'm playing skies of arcadia for dreamcast now and enjoying it a lot. i get more excited playing these old games for the first time than i do playing new games.

This is exactly why I still play my PS3 and recently went back to playing PS2, OG Xbox, and GameCube and been having way more fun playing those then my PS5 lately, I miss how simple and fun gaming used to be, no microtransactions, no always online/ online requirement, no live service, no dlc thats actually part of the base game locked behind a pay wall, no day one patches/ games released incomplete, just complete games all on the disk, no installs just pop in and play, simpler times, with games that were way more fun and had way more replay value than whats out now....Now (with the exception of nintendo) the modern consoles feel too much like PCs, exclusives are almost nonexistent, and too many games now feel more like a chore than actually being fun to play, this is exactly why consoles before the 8th gen will never die

    • @Jack_80
      @Jack_80 24 дні тому +1

i think this day one patch crap is intentional, at least partially. it basically lowers the desire for physical games, something they've been trying to do for years. and knowing you'll never have the complete, unbroken game on a disc like you used to.
indie devs are my only hope for the future of gaming. they make games that feel like more modern versions of great classic games, and they try new and exciting things. they got me into new genres of games that i really enjoy, like roguelikes and deck building games like slay the spire.
it's crazy to me that hollow knight was made by 3 people, and it's the largest metroidvania game i've ever played, then nintendo with it's hundreds of employees makes a new 2d metroid game that's 5-6 hours long and linear. i have no idea how people can accept this crap from aaa devs, when indie devs are giving you so much more for a fraction of the price. hollow knight was $15 and crap like metroid dread was $60.

Agreed, that pick-up-and-play-ability is so good in old games. And not only is it the simplicity, but they drew you back in, you WANTED to play them repeatedly. And time flied, 2 hours felt like 20mins because you were having a blast. And I think that added to that approachability, compacting the experience into something that doesn't feel heavy or riddled with barriers to fun. Whereas now you get told you have to "invest", "immerse yourself" and "work on your attention span" just to experience unskippable cutscenes, scripted sequences and more that does everything to delay or remove fun/gameplay away from you. Add to that the trend of depressing storylines trying to lecture morals to you like it's school all over again. It's the opposite of drawing you in and entertaining you - you feel more like you're forcing yourself to wade through a draining experience.

I don't have much faith in the games I own for my PS5. Nice video, I also prefer playing older video games, and not even out of nostalgia; I like discovering older games that I missed out on. The only reason I bought a Xbox Series X was due to Microsoft bringing back a fair amount of their legacy titles with their backwards compatible program. Also as for the question that you posed about the video games being showcased in the video are: Avatar The Last Air Bender, Burnout 3 Takedown, Medal of Honor Frontline, Mortal Kombat Deception, Micro Machines (2002), Space Invaders Anniversary, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, and Wild Wild Racing.

One thing is it was litterally impossible for one retro system to look and sound the same as the other. Ports of the same games were completely different. Sega Genesis had its own look and sound as well as SNES. The PS2 was the last system that had it's own style and look.

I've been playing retro games more and more and more since about 2021 or so. And honestly, after so many years feeling like I didn't "get" retrogamers, now I do. I still don't go back to the NES era and stuff, I really can't stomach those super old games. But SNES/Genesis onwards, almost anything goes. I grew up on the early days of PC citybuilders/RTS and the PS2 golden days. And I've went through a process of playing games from a few years back, to 10 years back, to 12, 15, 20 and more... Nowadays I literally can't stop playing DOOM and Quake. Games I don't have nostalgia for because I missed them growing up. Retrogaming has been a gate into discovering cool games I never knew existed, and experiencing great gameplay and music and stories. From the arcades in the 90s to the arena shooters of the early 2000s, dozens of racing games and more. All the while we're all done and tired with the modern landscape of gaming, not because the games suck (some of them do) but because of the industry's constant push for greed and stealing your time and manipulating you. So yeah, retrogaming is great. Plus, if you're a broke gamer with a weaker computer, you can play hundreds of amazing games for free with emulators and abandonware PC games. Or just buy old games on sales on GoG and Steam, they go as cheap as $1-5 sometimes.
What I'm trying to say is, even if the gaming industry exploded toomorrow and I lost access to the Internet, I still have enough games on me that I will literally never finish playing. 30 years of rich history at my fingertips.

The big thing for me lately has been the RPG-ification of games, despite loving RPGs even growing up. I don't need or want every game to have stats on weapons & xp to earn & unlock new abilities. Yes it's fun to have bits of that added into some games, but now games are having those mechanics added to them as requirements vs ways to differentiate.
Also free to play is killing games that would otherwise be great fun experiences. I don't have anything against a game being free, but when they are they tend to have a bigger grind than if they weren't. Bring back the 10-15 hour action packed adventure, especially with exclusives taking 5-7 years to make a 30-50 hour game.
I know it's not exact math, but we could easily get a trilogy of games that allow iteration & tell a more expansive story. I'd even have been happy with Last of Us 2 being spilt up into 2 games with 1 being released earlier & a second made a PS5 exclusive. The story could've even been expanded, plus we would've gotten to play the first part earlier.

solid reasons... One reason that you missed sir is...
YOU OWN that DARN THING that you bought.
Imagine this - you bought the CD, you have the game with content, characters, modes etc. as you mention.
And you have to pay for it how much? Not sure about the price, what it was, talking about PS2 era, $50 per new game?
As you mention Tekken: Tekken Tag had a 20 characters at start, 14 characters to unlock, every character had a movie to unlock, many characters had additional custom to unlock, there were modes to unlock, and usually you were playing the game for hours to unlock it (as much things you have covered in the video)
Right now you are paying the same price, if not even more than that,
you are receiving less content (characters, modes etc),
    more bugs (because patches/updates/fixes)
and the company is ABLE TO TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU, if they will decide to do so, because of something.

Retro games have a clue in their name - games. Modern games are now an investment of time and don't 'feel' like games anymore, which a lot of working adults also don't have time to install or play, so retro games are much more likely to be accessible quickly and easily for a quick 10-20 minute blast, then turn off and do something else. I also prefer to own something physical too. Modern games are often too complex and require much more expensive PC's to play them effectively and suck up a lot of your leisure time if you are an adult with family commitments or other hobbies.

Don't get me wrong I agree with the concern going forward (it's definitely going to get more and more like that...) but _most_ games currently, particularly PS4 and even PS5 titles, do have a fully playable version on the actual disc with no further download required. Series X titles on the otherhand seems to be the worst for the disc being little more than a key. That said again I agree it's definitely a worsening trend and it's why I've also got into a bit of game preservation via disc collecting and (for the 7th gen especially) emulation. The closer we get to the 360 store closing especially the more in demand certain discs are going to become.

The problem is games are too long now, I love lots of JRPG's and games like that, and back in the PS2 generation and prior maybe the longest games you would come across was around 20-40 hours even for the longer JRPG's, but now it's like 80-120 hours plus for them, and yes I do love that because you do get your money's worth, but when you have a family, kids you're not going to be able to keep up with games, and starts feeling like a job, not a hobby.
I loved Guitar Hero 1-3, I was in middle school when it came out, and we were talking about it daily didn't matter if you were girl or boy, it really brought everyone together for the ones that played it, at least in my town. The problem is that it was Activision that released it, like if it was directly Nintendo or Playstation, and were going going to release it maybe like once a generation, I think it would still be a hit today. I think they just over saturated the game. It's kind of the same with DDR.
I also love DDR, and just got back into it. That was really popular, but looking back at how easy the early 00's DDR games were, compared to the newer/stepmania or Arcade versions today are, you're basically going to be sweating within ten minutes are so, so maybe DDR is too active for most people. Even though it's super niche now.
I miss exclusives, in a way it's nice since you really only need a Switch, PS, and PC. I'll always choose PS just because there are still JRPG's/anime that don't come to Xbox.
I did love Hogwarts Legacy, it's probably my favorite game in a while.
I'm envious of guys, because they always had group hangouts at each others houses, and just gamed all night, and were gluttonous eating pizza, chips and drinks, my brother did that like weekly. Yes I had a couple friends that were geeky and into the things I were into, but girls just really didn't go that deep into it. I would hang out with my brother, while his friends were over, and I would get a slice of pizza, but t wasn't often that I joined.
My husband and I are 30, and he still has 3-5 friends that still come over or he goes over to their house, and plays games, watches anime or whatever. If they are over here yes, I'll join them for a bit, but as always I am just there, not actually part of the group.
I miss being able to just put the game and able to play as well, I tried to put in a game the other day, it was a PS4 game, that I played on PS4, but wanted to play PS5 DLC for it, and so I had to update it, being a mother I had limited time that night to do it, so I put it in then had to updated it to PS5 version, that was about an hour in half, then I had to updated it to the newest version, so that was another 30 minutes. Needless to say, I wasn't able to game that night.
I haven't done much emulation, but mainly did it for SNES, and a few PSP games. It takes a lot of memory, so I have to figure it out more.
I honestly just miss 99-12. It just felt like a different time, games, anime, pop culture were just better and more magical feeling.

If everything comes to PC then I don't have to worry about having a specific console or emulator for a couple of games. You talk about platformers with quirky main characters not being a thing anymore and then immediately go for Ratchet and Clank as an example or Crash 4 as the only one remaining of the genre, the two most mainstream ones.
But indie platformers keep coming out, they don't come out in troves and they're not all spectacular but many are fantastic games. Let's look at a few modern platfoemers, again they're not as plentiful and definitely not as popular but they are here and are awesome.
    - Psychonauts 2
    - Penny's Big Breakaway
    - Hell Pie
    - A Hat in Time
    - Song of Nunu
    - Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara
    - New Super Lucky's Tale
And a few others I can't recall the names of at the moment, combine those with the AAA 3D Platformers like Spyro, SackBoy, Astro's Playroom, Mario Odyssey and you have a decent number of 3D Platformers to play and enjoy. Not as many as back in the day but they're here.
2D Action games and platformers are also here, whether fully 2d in pixel art form or 2d gameplay with 3d models, they're not as many but they exist and are a ton of fun too.
Now you say you grew up on PS1 and up, I assume you're younger than me but I grew up on LCD and VFD handhelds and tabletops, Arcades, home computers, 8 and 16bit consoles, PS1 was 8th grade and up for me :) So even for old timers like me indie developers have us covered.
There is everything, indie gaming and AA smaller budget games is where gaming is at and it is as good as ever.
And don't even get me started on pick up and play short and dynamic experiences like back in the day through the PICO-8 and PlayDate platforms, you can now even buy a physical console the RGB30 which is PERFECT for the PICO-8, it's basically like an official PICO-8 console with native support for the platform.
I play both modern and retro games equally
I completely understand what you are saying and agree with it, but only when it comes to AAA titles
Gaming is so much more than the boring and often deprived of creativity AAA space.

Read the comment and totally agree! In another comment I did state indie devs are the ones keeping the old style alive and thank goodness. I’ll come back to your list and check these games out. Thank you for the recommendations!
A part of the problem I’m experiencing is the avenues these games are distributed. Are there physical releases of these games with everything in the disc?
      Thank you again!

@@RetroRangerReviews88 I'm all for physical versions with everything on the disc man, I have thousands of games that I will never ever get rid of, but sadly times are changing and I'd rather experience a game and have fun playing than boycotting a digital copy if there is no physical or the physical sold out long ago.

@@GamingPalOllieMK Have to weigh in and say, yes, the indie scene, and even mobile games, are filling much of the void that we retro gamers feel. But I do wish more indie games were available physically. Aren’t there some collections on disc or for Switch? Any that you’d recommend? Thanks! PS I also go all the way back to Atari; Colecovision and TG16 are my favorites.

Good times. And it’s scary how really younger generations don’t even have a perception that it used to be like this.
They are growing with mobile casino machines (I refuse to call them games) in their pockets, so they are getting manipulated into growing up accepting gambling and forced addiction as something completely normal.

@@RetroRangerReviews88 yeah, me too. And not only Fortnite. Roblox as well. And it’s crazy how open they are for ill-intended groups to reach children and teenagers and abuse them (like the recent exposure of the “764” group, comprised of scumbag psychopaths from all over the world using these games to reach out to kids).

I also find old games satisfying and try to interest my son in them. Since I'm on the PC side this is very easy. Most of the games were available on DOS and early Windows so it's trivial to get them playable on a "modern" (10 year old) system. GOG sells them for a buck or so per game (patched to run on Win-10 or through their DOSbox) and others can be downloaded from the web. If push comes to shove there are embedded html versions on retro sites for thousands of them.
The bad thing is that my son likes playing Doom to much after I introduced him to this masterpiece.

Another problem I have with modern gaming is that games don't feel like they are made with the idea to have fun.
It feels like they are enginered to make the most amount of money possible.
I highly agree with the gimicks section. Game gernres are just lost to time because companies just wanna print money.
I miss lightgun games or gallery/railgun shooters where the screen moves on it's own and you just have to aim.
I did play House of the Dead remake and I loved it. But using the analogstick + gyro is not the same as having an actual guncontroller.
This is why I love the Wii so much. Soooooo many incredible lightgun games.
Remember when console manufacturers would have quality control?
When they looked over a game and said something like. This is not good enough we can't let you release this or with this much content we can only allow the game to be released digital at a maximum pricepoint of 5€. Developers have to much freedom nowadays. Stuff like NOS (new operating system) or Clock simulator 315 on Switch has no right to be released. Whenever I browse games during a sale I get interupted by these worthless trashgames that I can't ignore. Or a game like Enchanted Portals releasing at 20€. The same price as it's "inspiration" Cuphead but with not even 10% of the content. There needs to be more regulation in this regard.

    • @RetroRangerReviews88
      @RetroRangerReviews88  5 місяців тому

I agree, but I guess some game companies can argue that it’s art and therefore a matter of opinion or perspective. Value for money is more important to me than anything else. A game has to earn its price, and I only want to pay once lol great comment and thanks for watching!

Got a good PC that can run emulators like Duckstation and Dolphin? Or a console like an Xbox Classic for games that aren't backwards compatible? Then seize the chance and balance out the middle market games and rare AAA successes of the modern day with Retro Videogames! [ditto for oldschool PC games, too]

Man unlockables in games was great, epically for fighting games back in the day where you had to unlock characters, makes you feel like you're really progressing. Gimmicks I love from the ps2 days was the mini games you'd get the odd time for loading screens.
Light gun games will never feel as good as when they where on crt tvs and felt like an arcade experience! I'm always sad that nintendo games never come down in price, it's painful on the wallet.
Local coop has to come back, it's sad it's faded away so much, I always pick up games that allow local multiplayer.
Yeah, having to wait for games to download and update is so sad, only got fast Internet recently which has helped, but still takes so much time to get around to playing a game.

Brother, how could you not mention the most important things?
    1. The old games didn't treat you like an idiot. In modern games you are always put in the linear alley and you are passing from the cutscene to cutscene, and the game doesn't even give you a chance of getting lost. Riddles are much more simplified.
    2. Dying in the modern games or taking damage has essentially no impact, since automatic checkpoints are every 15 seconds (Tomb Raider Anniversary started it), and in most games you just wait it out behind the cover for health to come back. You don't feel the need to be focused and to perform well.
    3. Newer graphics looks more like oily graphics, often carroonish graphics, rather than dark or realistic (Look Countrer Strike 1.6 -> Counter Strike 2)

Sure there's a lot of live service crap. The fact is, one can just laugh and ignore that. Yesterday's AAA games where created by small teams. Today's small teams create Indy games. There's loads and loads of those. Back in the PS2 era I had about 2 dozen PS2 games, now I've got 400 on Steam and about 300 free on the epic store. The amount of great games from the last decade that play great on a Steam deck is astonishing.
