I just got back from solo trip, was staying in Rocinha & Vidigal . Seemed safe only downside was some locals are a little pushy expecting dinheiro for guiding you if you get lost

It might sound like common sense, but what about going to the beach alone during the day? I'm worried about leaving my belongings on the beach while I go in the water. Can people be trusted to watch it? And do you have any alternative tips in case I don't find a suitable person to watch my stuff? Thank you

That’s totally fine! I go to the beach by myself all the time. You can usually just ask someone next to you to watch your things. People are very friendly in Brazil, so that’s never an issue. The thing is just not to leave your belongings unattended. Just like you probably wouldn’t do that in any other country either.

I do have a question. Have you ever been to Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil?

My friend got hit with a baseball bat and had his phone stolen during his last trip to Brazil in Rio last year. He's not going back and I sure am not.

This is so weird because baseball is definitely not a sport that we Brazilians, mainly cariocas, practice! We simply don’t like it. So I think very strange that a person have it to hit people just to rob someone, the value of the baseball bat itself would be very expensive, so for me this is quite utopian. And let's take into consideration that this is a very large object, you can't even hide it... no one goes around carrying this in their hands to rob someone…🙄

This could literally happen anywhere in the world. I lived in Paris for years and phones get stolen there from tourists and locals every day including myself. This is not a reason to not travel but it’s your choice. You might as well not go outside the house cause anything can happen anywhere. To say this is what happened to your friend and that’s why you’re not going there… Well many crimes happen in Europe and the States. People still travel there. Your definitely missing out cause Rio is beautiful and generally Brazilians are some of the friendliest and welcoming people.

    I'm scared to death

It’s honestly not as dangerous as people make it seem to be. I take the same precautions i’d take in any major city. Honestly it’s not different than what I do living in Paris. And I’m there solo traveling all the time and never has anything happen. Most tourists I met were scared going and then see that it’s actually completely fine once they are there.
