- This build was beautiful, sorry it took me 2 weeks to release it. I've been busy working on other things and just kind of forgot about my channel for a week or so. I'm back don't worry!

FYI, the Cutlass, was as much a tool as it was a weapon. Back in the days of sail. The Cutlass would be used not only by boarding parties, but by repair parties. Clearing the deck's of debris. Like busted spar's, heavy rope and canvas. So the "Pirate" Cutlass was around 1/4 of an inch thick, so it had the weight to chop through those things. And of course chop and hack "Soft" targets. Your Cutlass Machete did however turn out nicely. Did you retemper the blade, after all the grinding?

That’s super cool to know that cutlasses were meant for more than just as a weapon. Also, I was careful not to break the temper by cooling the blade after it started to get a little hot. It seemed to work well, just have to make sure not to let it get too hot.
So good to see a young man doing young manly things. There is hope in the world still. love it.

Easy, Cheep and a beauty
The machete is the direct descendent of the cutlass. Though a real cutlass usually started at about 4-6mm at the base of the blade & then distally tapered to machete thin at the tip. Which helps when trying to fight with it.

Good stuff, if I could make one minor adjustment to the build I would say, start with the razor to cut away bulk leather on the handle, leave it a touch oversized then finish it with sand paper. After that, I'd soak the whole handle in a veggie oil for 24 hours, wether it be peanut oil, olive oil or vegetable oil. By doin that, the leather absorbs alot of it and helps keep it lasting alot longer.
If you use some fine sandpaper to smooth the leather of the handle, impregnate the leather with wax by rubbing the wax block on it and then melting the wax in with a heat gun or hair dryer and then polish it up with a soft cloth you might like it even better. I bought a cheap set of Mossy Oak brand hunting knives a few years back that had stacked leather handles. I thought the handles were a little rough looking and I think they had some kind of polyurethane finish on them that I didn't like the feel of. So I hand sanded rhe finish off, sanded the leather smooth, pilished the dry leather just with a dry cloth and then did the wax treatment and pilished that. Vast improvement and when I was done rhey didn't look like 'cheap' knives, anymore. The cool thing about the wax treatment is not only will it protect and slightly harden the leather but also, even though you can polish it to a nice sheen, the wax, itself makes the leather a little 'grippy'.

Just a wee precaution from an old Shop worker. When using power tools, either button up them loose sleeves, or better yet; Roll em up.
Seen a fair few folk have their touchy pokies go flyin across the worshop when loose sleeves get caught up in wheels, Lathes, presses and band saws.
One of the lads at me old shop earned himself the nickname ‘Jamie Lannister” while working the Tube Saw… I’ll let you guess why. 🖐🏻
Luckily the cut was so clean, the Saw Bones managed to reattach the thing, and he even managed to get most of his functionality back.
Dinae stop us at the shop from buying a ‘golden Jamie hand” and giving it to him while he was recovering. He got a kick out of it. ^.-.^
Dinae let this be a deterrent from pursuing your dreams and projects. Just be mindful that power tools are more powerful than you. Mind them Sleeves. ^.-.^

Tip for you bro, make sure the glossy side is roughed up, use more glue, clamp it really tight, and then use a belt or angle grinder or sand paper to shape it and you get it to a silky smooth finish.
I wonder how the leather would have turned out if you sanded it into a finer shape and then polished it.

stacked leather handles are great for narrow tangs but not too good for wide tangs since it can make the front and back of the handle more fragile
Yeah once I started doing it I realized I probably should’ve just wrapped it, but I think it turned out pretty good in the end!
If you are planning to do this again, make a mock-up of the tang and stack the leather on it to assure the correct dimensions. Then, after you have trimmed the corners, use your belt sander and double cut, half-round file to get the correct fit for your hand. After you have transferred it to your cutlass, coat it well with mink oil to preserve it. Yes, I have done this before.

Thank you, I haven’t yet been able to do the scale armor. It’s expensive and takes a lot of time to do. On the next armor I make, I’ll most likely do a section that’s scale!
what is that called leather micarta? is that how they make the knife micarta but with cloth?
The problem is that most modern machetes are to thin to convert to true swords. If taken in to true combat it probably would bend or shatter
Most cutlasses' were only sharpened the last 8 or 12 inches. That bottom half would be stronger for blocking sword blows and breaking bones.

Damned fine work. If you cut a strip of mild steel, and tack weld it to the spine, you'll get a more rigid blade.
13:11 When you're swinging at free hanging vines or small branches try to feel when the blade makes contact and adjust the motion of your hand to drag the blade through the cut rather than just swinging through. You will start getting that nice high pitch "shink" like you were getting from the foliage at the end from every clean cut 🤌

Yes, of course I doubt it would be flying out of stock at that price. But it is definitely a good sword. A few of my friends were actually trying to buy it off me when I showed them, haha
Well done, but as an expirienced swordsman, i know that would not stand up to a legit real deal properly made modern sword in a duel. It may look the part but would get bent or cut into immediately. If it were a very, very, very well-made machete, with a thick tang and base of blade, distal taper, along with good steel and proper heat treat, it would work for sure. But not with a $30 machete that if it was even heat treated at all, was completely undone with all that grinding. A differentially hardened 1095 katana or a through jardened 1060 longsword would wreak havoc on that blade.
All that being said, you ended up with a beautiful blade to cut light targets and have fun with, and that's what its all about. Very, very nice work sir.

@@adventureswithyouandme42 Bad...This is the most popular brand in Brazil, it is not the best, but in terms of cost-benefit ratio it is unaffordable and costs on average, this is around 10 dollars, paying with import taxes around 15 is a lot for a Tramontina machete.

useless Leather stacking tips
Keep the Square or do circles, better to have more material than less.
If you cant get a grinder or a belt sander (handhelds for like 30 or bigboys for 45) try using a wooden block (cut one to shape) and gluing sandpaper to it, so you can finish and shape the handle.
Try out a BobSmith combo set of Epoxy or similar brands. Red label.
Shit looks dope in the final reveal.

I was more thinking about what would happen if the drill bit got stuck while you were using the drill press. Cause even if the blade wasn't that sharp it would not take much to get really hurt if there was some kick back from the drill press making the machete spin which wouldn't take much. So next time just keep that in mind is all I'm saying
Came for the blade content..but unfortunately had to see someone's mental illness..seriously seek mental health care sooner then later..definitely needs to get out of the parents basement and socialize with normal people..
