- Techstep has been my favourite DnB subgenre since I discovered it in 2020. It's dark, agressive, smart and precise. Here is a mix of my fav tracks from the late 90's to early 2000's era. The image you see is kind of what techstep visually reminds me of, but it would be very tedious to explain. Anyway, I hope that you'll enjoy this mix as much as I did when creating it !

And really... REALLY fucking dark.

I feel like I'd visually describe it is clinical, yet industrial machinery. There's so much rhythm, yet punchy "random"/deliberate motifs. Sirens, crunchy and crispy high hats followed by going through a corridor fade-out/in to a different section. A random amen break to bring you back even though it's already high energy.
I... Heard this kind of stuff before, but putting a name to it? I know people roll their eyes at classifications, but when there's names/umbrellas, it can help you piece together the puzzle if you're not already familiar with the scene. BLESS for this mix!!!

Techstep is my favourite genre of DnB. I discovered it on GTA3 on MSX FM and it was on Midnight Club. I also believe what we now call Techstep was the ORIGINAL DnB back in the 90s

Been to so many places like this for some mad parties over the years. Carparks, railway workshops, warehouses on ports, tunnels, defuct métro stations, disused airport hangers.... proper atmospheric.
Awesome for later night computing. The golden moment was when my wife walked in the room with a puzzled look on her face and said "what you doing?!"

Big up for the mix! New World Order and Refuge are one of my all time faves, Konflict, Bad Company, Ed & Optical are the creme de la creame of 90-s techstep sound
I remember sneaking out of my folks house, i was a junior in high school, to go to a rave with my "cool" friends from school. Headliner was DJ Micro and i believe supporting act was DJ Baby Anne. I was super excited, anyways i get in the venue and the main room had headlining PLUR going on. I'm roaming around the club on stuff that I'd rather not mention. I see a absolutely dark room, reeked of trees getting burnt. As i get closer, a massive wall of 20-125Hz bass blasted me, I'm like omfg! That night forever changed my EDM preferences, it inspired me to get into music production and sound design, which became an absolute obsession for at least a decade. Dnb/techstep/neurofunk/jump up & jungle have shaped my person, my intellect, my perceived view on life and my world. I became a junglist and a real bass head that night and never looked back. Real bass head way before Bassnectar even had the idea to call his following, Bass Heads. I've seen DieselBoy two times. He's the godfather for stateside dnb, DJ Dara, AK1200, DJ DB, Hive, just to name a few stateside producers/DJs. Welcome to the elite my friend!

I used to love going to the middle of know where to find a tech step illigal rave. Some of the best nights ive ever had. Such a gret era of music. Just listening to this mix brings back so much nostalgia

Glad to see Makai get some love in this mix. One of the trendsetters for the techstep era up there with Dom & Roland, Optical, Ed Rush and Fierce. Digital & Spirit were starting their incredible careers in this genre as well, not long before they became heavyweights.

Went back to 32:48 (1225 years into the future!), Ed Rush & Optical - Gas Mask tune blows me away. If that doesn't put a smile on people's faces (the first tune and then what it morphs into), I don't know what will. 🙂

What's amazing to me is - and I grew up raving to this at the time - that this stuff is still light years ahead of any other electronic genre. It's aged incredibly well, and it's awesome to see people are still discovering it and totally getting the vibe!

This is a really incredible selection smoothing mixed and presented, perfect for if you've been long into this and surrounding styles, or you just happened across it unaware but gave it a try. Really gets warmed up from 56:24 onwards, but the whole trip is immense once you're really listening. Thank you for reminders and introductions to more artists creating these sounds.

you've only just 'discovered' it in 2020!!? all those years you've been missing on the awesome Techstep sounds. I've been listening to it since Kapricorn's tune" "Sureshot" back in 2001. The name 'Techstep' itself is so ultra cool!
Yeah I learned about it in 2020, I'm 19 and where I live drum n bass doesn't really get promoted a lot appart from recent liquid producers.... So before really knowing about it I simply knew I loved "a dark, precise, technologic-sounding kind of drum n bass", but that was kinda hard to search on UA-cam haha ! Once I stumbled accross a (now defunct) YT Channel called "techstep sound" which uploaded some of it, I finally had put the name on this kind of DnB I loved so much.

I hated this style of drum and bass back when it was popular. I stopped going to raves because it's all they would play. And yet, 20 plus years later, I've got to admit that this mix f*cking slaps. My goodness. I guess having the pic of the best, looking back in hindsight, has a certain advantage

Hi ! well, u can't miss No U Turn that's for sure ! Approximately one year after uploading this mix, I indeed discovered no u turn with Nico's Lo tune and immediately fell in love with the sick vibe of this track as well as many other releases on the label. An important piece of techstep history 💯 cheers !

I don't know if this is a troll comment, but no, this is not a mixture of techno and dubstep. It is techstep, a subgenre of drum and bass music. Google it and you'll find some info.

Indeed I labeled this as a mix but it is more of a rendered medley of tracks (I made it in Reaper, as I don’t own any dj gear)
At the time my only goal was to make the very end of the tracks blend together as seamlessly as possible, I should have played more on the simultaneous playback of the tracks...
