SOMETHING TO TRY. I'VE USED THIS TO DIVERT WATER. If you have a very inconvenient spot where water insist on dripping. Fasten a piece of sturdy string where it starts to drip and angle it off slanting down a bit to lead the water to a more convenient spot to drip. Perhaps even into a bucket and the water can be used for something if you need it.
When using gravel to stabilize soil, it needs to be tamped down with a gas powered tamper or thumper and then it won't just sink away, but will work as expected.
The barn is gorgeous!!! Gonna be sooo nice to store all the hay at the main point of use. Levi is a gem! You are doing so well and it makes me very happy. I did send an email last night, keep an eye open for it. Stay warm.. 💜👍💜 Aunt Beth
Barn expansions/ upgrades are always a good idea and it usually benefits everyone on the farm in some way. 👍🏼 🩷WOW, Your milking girls are perfect the way they let themselves up, push the bar over, start eating and let you get to work!! Well done! 👍🏼 You and your husband also make a good team of getting tasks done together. 😊 Have a blessed day! 💕🙏🏼🌸
Thank you so much! When more milkers enter the routine this spring they will get confused about the pattern shift, but for now the girls have a nice flow to the milking routine!
Oh man I wish I had a real barn 🙂Maybe some day. In 40 years I've had ONE chip drop and that was only because I caught the guys down the street at just the right time.
Wow! Construction is moving right along. It's looking great! I was on Chip Drop's list for two years and got nothing. Like you, it's the area. Can't wait to see the finished addition.
It's so wonderful to see what y'all have had "in the works" for some time now actually take shape and be ready for the transition so quickly. And those first freshener udders are exciting to see! I hope they develop into the exact kind of udder you're breeding for. Seeing you remove (some of) the rabbit cages, I was (for a moment) concerned about the rabbits that were supposed to be in those but I'm looking forward to seeing the next stage of the process! And I'm positively giddy at the immense progress y'all have made despite weather challenges. We use those same type of pine pellets as kitty litter for our indoor cats and I'm not worried about their ability to compost down (in a separate area from our kitchen and garden compost).
The cage we took out was the quail cage and yes the quail are gone for now! The other rabbit cages have been empty for a while because they need repair. Our breeders were under the camera:)
How exciting! I am so pleased for you. It looks like an amazing storage and workspace and home for the bunnies. Those wood pellets in that quantity must smell wonderful. Enjoy your new barn!
I had a thought about the hay pallets, too. If you put them up on foundation blocks (8x8x12?) they would be safer from moisture AND the kitties could get under there during their hunting duties 😊
Just an FYI, those pellets are fine for a temporary solution. However, they are adding organic matter which will retain moisture in the ground. Ideally, gravel would be the better long term solution. But that is more muscle and more money. Even if you can only put gravel in the high traffic areas would be helpful.
What happened in the green side of the barn was essentially the same thing and that stays very dry. I basically just kept layering bedding down until the floor was built up over time. It might be wet underneath but it's dry for at least several inches where the goats are. We had put gravel in a few places and it just sinks. When we put in the storm shelter which was a 10 foot deep hole, zero rocks came up! So the gravel just sinks to infinity lol
It looks so cool! That is going to be so open too, that's a big win!! Oooo, almost time for sweet baby goats overload! I can't wait 🤗 The strong thoughts worked 💪 That was awesome 😂
Chip drop is an excellent resource. You could try a friends place thats in a bigger city, maybe even split the drop with several people. It took a few months for us to get our drop in Portland OR and it was sooo much that we didn't use all of it in a year.
I don't think it's really worth the effort at that rate. We have been happy with what we have discovered during the years we never got a drop. I did even call "local" arborists directly. It's okay! The risk of getting contaminated chips is pretty high too.
Good morning! We have lots of projects on our farm list. Sometimes prioritizing is the hard part! Does anyone have a direct line to the farm fairy? I got some wish request! Always something to do on the farm! ❤
Oh so exciting, looks great! I have to say I am grateful we freeze up all winter as mud must be such a pain to have to deal with, the pellets were a great idea I have used those in the spring thaw as well!
Its really looking fantastic! eager to see how the ground comes along with the peletts added. I used to use something similar as a litter box stuff cause its no where near as dusty depending on what you get. Girls are really developing nicely those utters look fab!
Building looking great. Have a fun day. I have extreme temperature shifting here hope yours stays fairly steady. from -27c(-17f) up to +2c(36f) in 48 hrs then back to -20's by the weekend. Might take some rabbit #'s and a few pics to take advantage of warmth.
Barn expansion is looking phenomenal, Heather and Levi! Really love it, so much extra space and very well built! Love how the electrical was updated a little bit into the PVC conduit and little protected boxes. Thanks to GWP Homestead (Ragon and Megan) too for roofing help. This is going to be so amazing for goat/rabbit kidding/kindling season(s) and just future use once you get everything else shifted around and organized the way you want it. I learned too about using the string sort of like a plumb line for putting in screws in a straight line, very nice tip there. Thanks for sharing the journey! 💚🐇🐇💚
If I were u, I would’ve done a double layer of wood pallets for your hay storage. Our barn has alot of moisture and we stacked our hay the way u did and the bales on the skid were all moldy once we got down to them. A lot of waste.
This is how we store it in the green barn (which also gets muddy but has no pine pellets underneath) and in several years the only moldy hay we have had was baled wet. I'm so sorry you had some hay loss!
@@SageandStoneHomestead I was thinking the same thing; I was also thinking you could maybe lay down plastic or a tarp and put the pallets on that if most of the water is coming up from the ground
The new addition looks great may I ask what it cost you to build it? I know in different states stuff costs differently. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless you all.
Why didn't you squirt out a couple of squirts before you milked into ur bucket? I always pointed those first two or three squirts toward the ground before aiming at the bucket.
I do sometimes but not always. One of my scientist friends did a test on what part of the milking process has the most bacteria and I thought it would be this first squirt. Nope! It was just as clean as the milk behind it, I'm guessing because the teat closes off within 10 minutes of being milked anyway. We feed right after we milk so the girls stay standing for this time as well, preventing their open teat from being in contact with the soil. For this reason I don't teat-dip anymore either.
ua-cam.com/video/5kF85mFdPRY/v-deo.htmlsi=3_hBf1wxAQYM51IB There is a part 1 to this as well. This is the results video..part 1 has the way they collected samples.
@@SageandStoneHomestead I'll have to check that out; I quit washing udders a couple years ago at first because it like super cold and that wasn't good for my hands and I didn't think it would be good for their udders either. And then I started seeing things on various goat pages that veterinarians were saying wet washing could actually contribute to mastitis so now I just brush them off with my hands. Unless there is an actual reason to do more. And lots of times I forget to 'first flush' too and finally just didn't worry about it. Now if the weather is wet, nasty and warm, perfect for lots of bacterial growth in the bedding pack, OR if there is a sore or scrape, I will use some FightBac, just as a little prevention. So far no issues.
Afternoon coffee and your videos are my favorite. Now I have to head out and see my goats ❤ Question: I purchased a ND doe recently and she kidded back in June. Do they take awhile to come back into regular heat cycles? She near our bucks and I’ve yet to see a cycle. She’s been dried up for a few months.
She might be a quiet cycler. Some of them have very quick standing heats too, just a few hours. We see them starting to cycle again after just a couple months from kidding. About baby-weaning time .
And maybe one day you can get a bunch of dirt delivered and it will all be for free and you can have a rabbit tree in time not right now but in time soon if you really want it all be donated to you a rabbit habbitat
First off so glad I found your videos! I’m absolutely loving them! Also hello from across the river!!! I seen your logo said Cadiz KY! That’s not far from me! Love to see people from this part of western Ky making videos! Planning on doing a lot of things this year I haven’t done before. Bigger garden, building enclosures for goats hopefully adding some milking goats this year maybe, and learning to can this year! Also wanting to start a UA-cam channel going through all of it while working my full time job. I’ve told myself I’m gonna learn to can and never do but by golly this year I’m learning! Again absolutely loving your videos!! Do you have Facebook? I’d love to friend you on there as well if you post more content on there as well!
Yes we have a facebook that we don't post to. There is a scam channel on there with our name but the real channel has our logo in black and white and says Sagen Stone Homestead!
“Think strong thoughts!” Best line! Great video, guys
Thank you!! ♥ Your hoofprint is green now!
I use the pelleted pine bedding as garden mulch to protect my garlic in my raised bed during the winter.
I love that!
Glad we could help! Was a very fun afternoon.
We appreciate you so much!
New construction on the homestead is some of the most exciting progress there is! So sweet, Levi and Heather! Ta Da!
Thank you, I agree! Very rewarding!
Love hearing the kids outside playing! Teamwork Woop!
