Generally, we're trained to shoot, only when we've identified where the enemy is...
Failure to hold fire before enemy is identified, results in civilians getting hit unintentionally...
In addition, if you don't know where the enemy is, you're just wasting ammo, and you only carry so much...

    • @jibb1451

And you might have an advantage if the enemy can't hear where you are until you are in a decent position. Shooting at nothing will let the enemy know to some extent where you are before you engage them, as well as potentially what sort of weaponry and man power you have. A small group of terrorists fighting a small detachment of soldiers may stay and fight if they have good positioning and a drop, however if they start hearing more heavy firepower around them, they might bug out. Sure the threat may disappear, but instead of neutralizing the threat, those terrorists live to fight another day instead of being taken out if they held their position unknowing that they were out numbered and out gunned by one or two other military detachments and troops were able to properly flank them unnoticed.

Jibb Mcdonaland generally if you’re taking fire the enemy already knows where you are. Currently in the GWOT if you’re returning fire 3 things have happened, 1) you’ve taken fire, 2) ID’d hostiles 3) got the greenlight to make someone a widow

    • @angelarroyo6001

And 90% of the time you’ll get into a firefight now a days is because you’re returning fire. Very rare for us to open up first, in a lot of provinces in afghanistan civilians and farmers walk around with AK’s so just because they’re armed that doesn’t mean they’re hostile. One of the few battles that would be an exception would be fallujah and even then they still had to be careful because not all of the civies left the city before the fighting began

Rulers of engagement may dictate firing only at active valid targets in order to limit civilian casualties. Also if you are on a long patrol firing blind expends ammo that may be limited with no way to resupply and so must be conserved.

    • @westenicho
      @westenicho 4 роки тому +3

ROE always calls for firing at active enemy personnel, it's not like you're out there to shoot tin cans. In OSUT and throughout infantry training you are taught to acquire targets ASAP and call out your "3 D's" (distance, direction, description) for the rest of your squad or platoon so they can immediately take cover and return fire. You don't fire "blind" without knowing where the enemy generally is. The longer you take to acquire your target, the more vulnerable everyone is, but as soon as the enemy contingent is found you can expect your gunner to go cyclic and your fire team to lay down heavy fire to maneuver. It is absolutely not doctrine to be conservative with ammo at the beginning of an engagement-people will die that way. We have firing commands that squad leaders and platoon sgts will give out to let you know how much you should be expending.

I was just going to say, When i was in the Us Army and was a Infantrymen, Rules of engagement was starting to get more strict.. Taliban often have day long engagements that stop for hours and then restart. So NATO forces often have to fall back due to running out of ammo.

    • @generalkayoss7347

Blind fire is heavily dependent upon terrain (in addition to supply and civilians). For example, there isn't much blind fire in Iraq and Afghanistan simply because of the open terrain. Now take somewhere like Vietnam or the South Pacific during WW2, blind fire was the norm.

They kinda took a risk cause of the adrenaline flow. There's no hit markers in real life so you have no idea if you hit a guy or not, its only after when you advance to the area and find bodies do you know. I don’t think his move was stupid. Most of the time the enemy waits until we’re in a position of zero cover. His fastest and smartest move was to go down hill. Because it’s always harder to go up hill. Besides he was pretty far down the hill, so either way his nearest cover was down hill.

obv i wasnt there and didnt get a good layout of the land due to the camera perspective but where was his squad while he was moving down? i assume they all were in cover of some sort. if you look to his right at the start of the video you can see a big rock formation. now unless there is something that would make it such that he got there slower than getting ALL the way down that hill to get behind that structure. i dont see why he wouldnt advance towards the rock formation. 1. its equal to farther distance from the people shooting at you while you have no cover. so you are not advancing while having no cover. 2. the rock formation is shorter distance when you are being fired at with no cover your first objective should be to get behind cover.

in the original video if you look at the desc. it'll say he was taking fire from the enemy so that his squad could get away.
      here's what it says:
No rounds penetrated his body armor, and he made it home with no permanent injuries. This happened in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
      *READ* From the cameraman:
" I got a hit a total of 4 times. My helmet cam died and i made it down the mountain on my own. I was also hit in the side of my helmet and my eye pro was shot off of my face. We were doing overwatch on the village to recon and gather intel. I was point heading down the face of the hill with the LT. when we got hit. the rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn't start the video until a few mins into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety."
"A round struck the tube by my hand of the 203 grenade launcher which knocked it out of my hands. When I picked the rifle back up it was still functional but the grenade launcher tube had a nice sized 7.62 cal bullet hole in it and was rendered useless. "

However, the previous wars fought were done with thousands of men in a small area. This type of tactic is when you advance with a hundred other men to protect thousands. This is one man trying to protect a dozen. Early on in Afghanistan and Iraq, a lot of very small units were nearly wiped out because they were told to engage thousands of enemies while being less than 100.

As for the second video, the only reason he was moving without cover was because all his teammates were wounded and he was trying to get them help. It was a bad situation all round.

So for the second video, the area he was fighting in has cover on the bottom of the hill, there actually is no cover on top on the hill as well as the side. And it’s easier to go down those hills than up, what he should have done is continue to go down to the defilade. It doesn’t help though that it was hill to hill shooting and they got the drop on his squad

In my b.c.t we were taught to shoot at what we saw keep said collator low but if you knew where the shots are from to just well if the shots there take it or lay down suppressive fire and allow a flank to take them

Just for clarification in the video where the soldiers is moving toward the enemy proceeding down the hill, he is attempting to draw enemy fire, I believe if I recall correctly, it explains this in the description of that particular video.

11:30 he could likely see where he is being shot at from based on muzzle flash or smoke. With an ACOG sight he could logically be attempting to make accurate hits on the target. Yes 500m would be an incredible distance, and he is likely only zeroed for 300m, but the max range of an m4 is 650m and he is firing from an elevated position
