Just had the operation of permanently fuse the toe joint. (Mtp1 arthrodese) I wish I had done this operation sooner. After surgery I had minimal pain and could walk within days. I know the bones will take time to heal but the fast recovery is amazing
I just had Hallux Rigidus Surgery with bone spurs on December 5, 2018. Although I’m in the early stages of recovery I can’t wait until I’m all healed became I can tell my surgeon did a wonderful job. I have a ways to go but I’m looking forward to being able to walk again without all that pain.
Hi. I had this exact problem and bone spur shaved off during surgery. I got almost all range of motion back but the pain is still there!!! It's the worst pain, sharp excuriating pain. I had surgery years ago and I still deal with this toe problem! I've injected steroids into the joint ( forget what the dr called it) but when the dr injected it into my toe to help soften the joint because there's no more cartilage there,...it hurt sooooo bad. Giving birth to my son was not that painful!! Can I ask you what dr you used? I need a second opinion because I need help again. Thanks Rachel
I hope I didn't scare you.. maybe yours will be fine! Maybe you had a better doctor. Who knows, but I don't want to discourage you. Keep bending that toe!! Trust me, you'll thank me later. :)
Rachel Knee hello! It’s good to hear from you, I never know how to get back to earlier replies on UA-cam. Still learning how to navigate. Ok. Well no you didn’t scare me sweetie...I went to Dr. Steven Herbst with Central Indiana Orthopedics., I have to say I was told he’s the best and he didn’t disappoint. I’m still in my Aircast boot from surgery and getting around on my knee scooter. I had my toe fused & besides the healing, I don’t have all that crazy pain like before the surgery. This was done on my right foot. Last year I had Tarsal tunnel done on my left foot from Sibdh Gallagher with IUHEALTH and she was the worst. My left foot is just awful & she did nothing after the surgery to try to remedy it.
Rachel Knee I will make sure to do that. Right now I’m just doing chair exercises so the rest of my body doesn’t stiffen up since I can’t get around real good yet 😊please let me know how things turn out for you and I’m so sorry to hear you are having problems now 😢
Rachel Knee hello. I'm wondering if the plate and screws that they put in your toe...may need to be removed. It happens sometimes..there was a lady that was next to me when I was getting ready to have the surgery and that's what she was in there for. Keep me posted sweetie...I'm hoping you find a good remedy soon..& get this resolved so you'll be pain free.
I had a youngswick osteotomy two days ago to fix my hallix ridigus and will start pt, physiotherapy and ultrasound to loosen my tight calves. I have been dealing with so much pain in my foot I finally decided to do the surgery. So far the recovery has been great, some discomfort but way less than I expected. I cant wait to completely heal and resume my regular activities.
Best explanation ever! I have been dealing with this for decades probably as a result from being on point at 6 years old and doing gymnastics, also broke my sesamoid bones in my right foot. I have to buy shoes that do not bend in the front as you demonstrated and have found good results with Zebas as you can put them on without bending and I've had several spinal surgeries so bending is out of the question. Thanks again, your diagrams were extremely helpful.
I had the surgery in 2011 when I could no longer take the pain. It kept me awake at night and sometimes I would just cry. The surgery was a hard recovery for me but it’s all good now. Only downside is I can no longer wear heels because my toe won’t bend but it was totally worth it to be rid of the pain.
Thank You for explaining this about the bone spur and big toe. My big toe doesn't bend at all and I will go and see a podiatrist. So glad to know what it is.!
This is probably the most painful thing I've ever been through. It started 15 yrs ago and I finaly made an appointment. Orthopedics for a month them cortisone shot. I'll be glad to get this shot because this is horribley paying

I'm having hallux pain and limited range of motion after a broken fibula Orif surgery. I didnt injure my foot or toe, ive had a secondary surgery to remove a large Syndemosis screw that was in place to let my ligaments heal. I figured my range of motion for walking would improve and so far in a week it hasnt because of this weird toe joint issue. I go back to my Ortho doc Thursday its just so frustrating. Its always one step forward one step back. I can't even google other stories of people that have had this happen to them.
I just had fusion in my right toe and a plate also put in. It’s been six weeks since my surgery I don’t have to use my boot and I’m walking on my foot now but I still have pain from the surgery and I was told it could take up to three months before it starts to heal,
I am starting to believe something like this could be happening to me. My gout meds aren't helping and I have on and off big toe pain. It's very annoying.
My pain comes and goes. I work from home and wear comfy flip flops all day and when I do go out I wear comfortable sneakers. I do have a small bunions. Why is this happening to me? I have not worn heels or uncomfortable shoes is about 10 yrs. I take my vitamins. How do I stop this. It’s only on my right foot. No surgery !
I broke my 5th metatarsal a few months ago after my foot slipped in a flip flop. I heard the snap. My 5th metatarsal has healed now but I went to hospital for x rays 3 times and discussed my sore big toes that showed up on the x rays. Avoid flip flops or be very careful in them....
I feel like my toe is really flexible, but it feels like the inside of that joint is on FIRE!! And years ago it began to look like a bunion, but the dr. Told me it was not a bunion.
Who can talk about the pinching pain on the neck muscles (inside) of the big toes? press them and is as if someone has needles crossing around there. Thank you so much
Where the hell do I find this doctor because I've been multiple doctors over 4 years now and still having pain after multiple surgeries and thousands of dollars.
Think I got this on my left toe from wearing steelcap workshoes... and it will sometimes click and give off a short shot of pain. Otherwise no constant pain, but it feels a bit stiff
I just started recently feeling what I believe is Hallux rigidus. The issue that I find different than HR is my big toe wants to point upward and the top of my foot feels very sore. I can move the toe to it's neutral position but I actually have to use my muscles to pull it to where it would typically be in a resting position. As soon as I relax the muscle the toe goes back upward causing the pain.
All this years i thought that I've gout.. i ate all the gout medicine but im wrong.. until 1 day i decided to get myself tested blood test, the doctor confirm that i dont have gout..it was something else..😢 so here i am watching this while my toe in pain again, normally it will take me almost a month to healing.. the doctor asking me to reduce weight and do foot exercise before work..when my hallux regidus strike, the plantar fasciitis will follow up next.. 😢 so pain.. i need to go to work for family..
I was diagnosed with this last week and have bone spurs on the joint. I've not had any pain with this but I do wear orthotics for my arches. The dr suggested fusion surgery rather than cleaning up the joint and removing the spurs. Can anyone shed light on this? I would much rather try removing the spurs and cleaning the joint out first than fusing the joint. Thx very much
Dee Mtn I just had my joint fused in my big toe and I am recovering great! I’m not totally healed but the pain is almost at 0!!! No more aches and pains. I just went and had myself scanned and shoes fitted for me and they are cute and comfortable. Hope this helps you
The cause of all diseases is wrong and mixed diet. you should be fed according to your blood type and do intermittent fasting 8/16. Some substances in blood pressure medications exacerbate the disease. Meat, dairy products and all kinds of sugars trigger the disease.
Sometimes my Hallux Rigidus on my right toe hurts so bad I think it would be better to amputate the toe via a shotgun blast. Of course I wouldn't do that but if anyone has tried this I would love to hear from you. LOL
I have gout and the first time I had an attack It spreader from my big toe all the way to my ankle, I don’t wish this upon my worst enemy. It was so bad I had to crawl around the floor, couldn’t walk and didn’t have crouches to help aid in walking and it was a sensation which I can only describe as wanting my foot chopped off
Same here. Diagnosed in the 8th grade (over 20 years ago). I've started actively stretch my toe joint as far as is comfortable 3-4 times per day for about 5-10 seconds at a time. Seems to be helping some. Going to try to avoid surgery at all costs. I also noticed when I had a manual labor job where I was on my feet and walking (nearly 10 miles every day), the pain drastically improved. Building your foot muscles is key I think.
I want to know why i cant bend my big toe down tho i can move it upwards and wiggle it and overall move it fine but its stiff and i cant bend it downwards or curl it down. Other toes go down but the big toe sort of stays straight. It kinda moves down but doesnt curl
How do I fix the hallux rigidus when my toe direction is opposite. My big(great) right toe aims out, pulling the other toes in that direction. I feel like I am the only one who has this problem. The trainer at my gym was stumped and so was my doctor, due to the way my foot is shaped
It could be gout ? I was the same . My advice which 100% helped me was this and all at Amazon. Apple cider vinegar. Red cherry 🍒 extract. Look into drinks on you tube to lower your acid levels for gout I promise my gout pain never came back over 5 years now it honestly works do your research on the drinks 🙏🏻 turmeric, cloves , Lemmon juice ( pure ) I’ll never stop using them .
I was just diagnosed with hallux rigidus. I’m confused. I have no pain in the big first toe. My area is in the 2nd metatarsal from top of the foot down to the bottom
So the solution is buy innersoles to weaken foot muscles even more, not fixing the actual root reasons that led and caused you to be over pronated which could be bad posture, weak hip and waist muscles or wearing crap cramped shoes squeezing your foot in weird angles, not allowing your feet to spread to plant naturally and to chop up up your leg and feet with surgery that would affect you for the rest of your life. Good luck with that
I bought zero drop barefoot sneakers, and I’m a lot more comfortable. The wide toe box allows my toes to splay. They are ugly definitely, but I have gain some flexibility in the toe.
@@88pynogrlyou may want to examine your tongue mobility with rotational exercises which connects to your diafram to the hips down to the feet. Sounds odd however look for tom Myers work displaying this if you don't already know.
Should have artificial cartilage by now, it's 2019. I googled it and some institutions are doing it, but it's not available in many commonwealth country hospitals. Then there may be no need for fusion surgeries.
I had a Cartiva Inplant done a year ago (it was very new). I was in some pain for a few weeks, and the swelling took a few months to subside. However, the result has been wonderful and I can walk securely again, sometimes for hours. I am fortunate to live in Canada, where all the costs were covered. I'm 70, BTW.
Can the toe bend down at all? My 11 year old daughter has had this since I noticed as a toddler (possibly even born with it) which I thought was just normal with babies, where it is like the bones are fused together and both big toes will not bend. Just looking for advice before I ring the doctors to hopefully book in a xray to find out!
Both my big toes don’t bend when I walk I have to walk on the sides of my feet… if I don’t and the joints both bend I am in excruciating pain for days x
Neither a shoe nor an orthotic can 'life the arch up' - that has been demonstrated with research and is thoroughly debunked. Time to keep up with research findings! I can agree that a shoe with a stiff sole can often help, more so when there is a rocker bar incorporated in the shoe. The insole shown here briefly, does not seem to be of the correct design but this is difficult to assess. The narrator does not specify the orthotic design features, except in the most vague terms. I looked at the website and again was unable to source the hallux rigidus specific orthotic design. Other forms of condition specific orthoses appear of a good design, so perhaps this is an oversight or incomplete understanding of the condition and orthosis requirements.
The speaker said this was a customer specific orthotic, so whomever fit her to that one perhaps didn't make the best choice for her condition although it is hard to tell from the little we saw of which orthotic was presented
Mike Stein - this might be a symptom of hallux rigidus. Compare the motion of the big toe joint on both feet to help you with the diagnosis. Flat feet or feet with excessive motion called pronation is usually the underlying cause of hallux rigidus
Well the clicking in both big toes never stop the pain is so bad in the big toe I put vice grips on them sometimes or ice but it's both big toes so I have nothing to compare
From a personal experience ( Sudden Sciatic pain 2 months ago).. My Sciatica severe pain subsided fast but numbness and mild weakness of the foot continues. Now I have Halux Rigidus.
Interestingly I have sciatica for the last 2 years but also hallux rigidus which I developed 2 months ago. Do you think hallux rigidus might be caused by nerve damage to the nerves involved with controlling the foot muscles? I have also experimented with how quickly I can wiggle the toes up and down on my right foot (good side) vs left foot (hallux rigidus side) and have observed that I can wiggle them faster with my right foot. It seems the nerves are more responsive/faster acting on the right foot. Anyone who reads this and who is in a similar situation could you please experiment with this too and report back, would really appreciate it.
Mine is due to massive trauma to the foot (fell 2 stories on both heels) - in the beginning my foot was very swollen and with time it got better and better and have more range motion of my foot but the last of the swelling on my foot is in my toe area so I just have to wait till it goes away. So yes, it can be due to trauma.
I hope someone See's this. I'm a track and field athlete in college and currently don't have a car right now so I walk everywhere. I walk to school to run 😪. Anyways during the season out of no where my big toe just lost flexibility. As a hurdler I need this and I'm just curious will I be able to get that back ? Do I rest like what are the treatments?
Yes, catch it now while your young! Find a good orthotist/prostetist/physical therapist or podiatrist that works often with orthotics and has continual training to stay up to date on it, have them ensure that your staying out of constant pronation in your walking/running, and have a FOOT specialty Physical Therapist teach you how to train your foot muscles!!!

I was stepped on my toe few months ago... my toenail came off but now it has grown back, I have pain in the upper joint of the toe ...... do I have this condition?
Is it possible to develop this very fast? As in going from having slight discomfort needing to pop the toe every few weeks with sometimes a little pain…. To almost being unable to walk, throbbing pain, very little range of motion w joint and toe, and redness on side of joint and top within 24 hours? I don’t think I have a break because there isn’t any bruising unless it’s a hairline fracture.
I woke up to this very darn issue. I was walking just fine the day after. Its red on the 1st medial metatarsal, aches, and throbbing pain. Cant sleep at all. Very random situation.
I'm watching this video now because I've just worked a 10hr shift. I had my dinner at half 6, I went back to work with what felt like my toe having cramp in it. I currently have plantar fasciitis in my left foot, now this in my right 🙄 I'm completely fed up. There's swelling around the base of my big toe going into the top of my foot. It's so tender 😫 I'm supposed to be at work for another 10hr shift tomorrow. With the pain I have now I can't see that happening 🙈😭
@@McMcPherson mines gone now, very weird. I was in so much pain Sunday night after that shift. I was dreading waking up Monday morning with it more swollen and painful but it wasn't any worse. I was still in pain but I had more movement in my toes. By the Tuesday there was no pain but still swollen so I didn't go into work again, it's been fine since. @@Bone783 I had surgery on all of my toes and yes, the pain does go away. The way I could tell is because l had surgery on 3 of 5 toes, then 6 weeks later, had 2 of 5 toes operated on. I went back to work at my school in the fall with a walking boot on. Then, in Nov., I took a leave of absence to get my other toes fixed before the end of the calendar year since I had met my deductible. Taking a leave of absence smack dab during the school year was very inopportune for my job. The difference of pain between the fixed toes and the ones that weren't was like night and day. Because the fixed toes didn't hurt at ALL, the painful toes were much more obvious and it was so hard to concentrate. To me, taking the time off was so important, l figured l might as well bite the bullet and get it all done. That was 10 years ago and I still don't have any pain. Except when I stub a toe...only because of the pins and screws that my podiatrist inserted. I am amazed that with all the hardware he used to fix my feet, that I don't feel any of it. My advice is to check around and go to the "best" podiatrist in your area. It's worth it. Good Luck and hope this helps you.

ALxdCr4ftPlays, I was wondering the same thing.
Both my big toes don’t bend when I walk I have to walk on the sides of my feet… if I don’t and the joints both bend I am in excruciating pain for days x
my brain is hoping to god that pen never gets re used ever 😭
I am in the stages of it hurts good but more bad than good...whyyyyy God do we need pain...foot pain 😫
Dieter Fellner, DPM Custom is the way to go.
The speaker said this was a customer specific orthotic, so whomever fit her to that one perhaps didn't make the best choice for her condition although it is hard to tell from the little we saw of which orthotic was presented
I get a lot of clicking and poping when I move the toe my feet are flat also
Mike Stein - this might be a symptom of hallux rigidus.

My toe is not moving after tibia and fibula fracture in accident.
Thank you so much Sir 🙏❤
Awesome
Great info.
Mine clicks what does that mean
Extremely informative!
He had the wrong shoe in his hand, I stayed on track though.
Can someone with Hallux limitus (happened due to inury) ever recover to its original state? does the cartilage heal?
Sameer Siddiqui yes .. rest to let it heal and rehabilitation exercises .
Not true, cartilage does not heal, once destroyed the body cannot reproduce cartilage.
Any update? Did your Hallux limitus get better?
Slow Motion Shoes would be either an enchantment or a curse depending on which unholy creature forged then
I hope someone See's this.
Find a good orthotist/prostetist/physical therapist or podiatrist that works often with orthotics and has continual training to stay up to date on it, have them ensure that your staying out of constant pronation in your walking/running, and have a FOOT specialty Physical Therapist teach you how to train your foot muscles!!!
not much for treatment.
Look up Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant - it may be an option for you!
Lynna Lee captivating synthetic cartilage
Thanx a lot Sir

I was stepped on my toe few months ago... my toenail came off but now it has grown back, I have pain in the upper joint of the toe ...... do I have this condition?
Where can I get that foot bone model and how much does it cost?
Check out a company named Wellden (or something similar to that). They make these bone models
Do you have running shoes in your store ?!! I don’t want to wear shoes like that !!!
@@carolinemoor738 any luck ? I just noticed my toe cracking a lot and hurting yesterday at work … 😭 I’m scared
I did go to see my doctor who suggested gout but said its unlikely. I've just done 4 10hrs shifts this week, no issues
@@carolinemoor738 great to hear .! I have a ski trip tomorrow driving to revelstoke BC .. I’ll drink plenty of water today and rest up In hopes I’m okay for it ..!

At least 70 degrees dorsiflexion? Completely wrong.
70 degrees is about the maximum dorsiflexion, only about 45 degrees is needed.
Is this condition curable with surgery? Will a person always experience some sort of pain?
Thanks for the explanation, I think I have a sesmoiditis and not gout!
