Media is like food. Everyone has their own preferences and tastes, and while some may have more refined palettes, as long as everyone is enjoying what they themselves are eating, that's what matters. Unless the food is bad for your health, if you catch my drift.

I had serve depression because I was left alone by my family so when Naruto had the scene where the village just stayed away from him but he keep growing stronger and by declaring that he wants to be Hokage. Exactly. If they havent read/seen that series, how would they know if that series doesnt deserve a grade higher than 5? Even if everyone around them says that said series is trash, they should still try to form their own opinion. A good example of having your own opinion in your circle would be the fact that I consider Demon slayer to be a solid 7, while some of my friends consider it to be a 9, which is completely cool. You've got to have your own opinions about things, because at the end of the day you cant really discuss taste.

I have friends who really hates shonen mangas calling it predictable is a poor mans writing but the worst was I was the only one who defended the genre and I was alone and sad that I thought my views were wrong and I understand that everyone has preferences and all that but its kind of hard to be that one friend who likes something that everyone hates. This video really showed me that its fine if everyone hates what you like. If your not invested in what you like your just gonna remain unhappy for the rest of your life. Thanks for addressing this

I love Berserk (The Golden Age arc and Conviction Arc are for me two of the best arcs I've read in my life), Steins;Gate, 20th Century Boys...
But I also absolutely adore Fruits Basket (2019 anime reboot, I'm reading the manga right now): I've never been more invested , more absorbed by any story ever. The amount of tears I've shed watching that show is remarkable. And I like Kimi ni todoke and its wholesomeness, Horimiya, Sangatsu no lion, Shigatsu wa kimi no uso, Jujutsu Kaisen, Fate, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Naruto, Inio Asano and Junji Ito's works...
I don't get that "elitist" attitude, It's a shame because those people are missing out many awesome stories
I remember a time where there was a pole that said which is your favorite anime out of these 5 and it had naruto, Dbz, one piece, hajime no ippo, and one other that I forgot. I chose dbz and said I love all of these but I gotta go with dbz and someone else said "if your favorite is dbz then you haven't watched any other anime" and I was like dude I literally said I love a of these implying I've watched all of them. Just because I have a different taste from yours doesn't mean your taste is better.

You having different tastes definitely means my tastes are better (which they are in any case) - because I judge by what I value, as do you. Why should one value another's opinion to be of equal worth to oneself as oneself's? How about this - how is another's tastes valuable at all to the person if not to find out whether something is good or not for the person. If the other continually rates highly things disliked, the person will probably rate the other's tastes quite low.
Now, this doesn't mean one has to be a prick about it. You don't have to insult people or tell it to them. One can be mild and gentle, especially considering the fact that tastes in anime ought not to disturb a person greatly.

Dragon ball is one of the worst anime
When will people realize that some people can watch hundreds of anime and still be able to have something like DBZ as their favorite? Sure favorites can change if you watch something you like more than your original top 1 favorite anime but that's not always the case.
The reason people say mid is 7/10 is because school taught as 5/10 is an F.

One piece fans hates on Naruto without any reason and they also think that it is the greatest manga ever made and if someone disagree with them they think that he is stupid or have trash taste. This is something an elitist would say.
I think one of the most important things to consider in this topic: is the difference between a good written story and a personal favourite of yours. Of course, these can go hand to hand with one another, but for example who would put Mirai Nikki (besides me) in their top 10 favourite animes or from the movie genre, saying that he/she loved X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
It all comes down to personal preference after all.....

@@Ektuma I can perfectly understand that and I also understand why people like Shonen. As someone who mostly into Seinen I actually quite like Black Clover, I think it's fun and I like seeing the magical abilities. I think people mistake preferences for elitism.

I am honesty am reading the manga I am in the elves arc in 4 days just because of the black bulls the reference etc but I can't say much about the anime but I don't like watching any anime black clover is good and it's 50/50 A/B not S+ and asta's sub is annoying

@Foq Que Not really. Goblin Slayer is well written within the context of his narrative and does what he's supposed to do and does it well. So is Guts. When you compare these two characters? It becomes subjective because the way these things are executed in each story may appeal to you a lot differently compared to how someone else may feel about them. Someone may like how Goblin Slayer was utilized more, vice versa for Guts. (I like both of them)
There is no criteria for what kind of media is "objectively" better than the other. Art is not a science.

@Foq Que So, this comment is a pretty much the epitome of what's wrong with the Western Anime Community. What we're doing here is selection bias. I'm not going to counter what you said about Guts because it's correct, but what you said about Goblin Slayer is wrong.
Goblin Slayer does indeed have a personality. He's stoic and he believes that he should work alone because he has a personal vendetta with the Goblins. He doesn't want to get other people involved, but he made many friends along the way. They were drawn to his ambition, especially that one chapter where he literally ASKED for help from a bunch of other guild members. Which shows that GS has humility and understands his limits along with when it's time to rely on others. Goblin Slayer is not a "self insert".
People actually hated Goblin Slayer at first and didn't want anything to do with him. However, over time? People began to warm up to him, especially when they joined in helping him protect that farm house (My memory is a little fuzzie on that chapter) where the Goblins were set on attacking. The slice of life bits are just as good as the fighting that happens in the series. You did not pay attention to the series.
Anime Fans here in the West will defend the series that either they like or that is deemed popular by the community. Berserk is held in such high regard, that if someone says anything bad about it? It'll be hell on Earth. Goblin Slayer is just as cool as Guts is. I like both characters, but what you're doing is overgeneralizing the series and making invalid claims about it probably because the series doesn't appeal to you. That's fine, but if you criticize a series? You must be fair, which a lot of Anime Fans here in the West and mostly within the realm of online discourse aren't.

If you didn't like what's been animated so far from Jojo's, I recommend you read part 7. It completely changed my mind on series that I previously thought was very repetitive and lacked well-written characters.

@@GinkoRieri Yes thank you! I'm not an insanely big JoJo fan but I do really enjoy the series, mostly the later parts. And whenever I'm talking with JoJo fans the topic usually turns to part 3 and I get ridiculed for not liking it. It's just so repetitive, and most of the journey feels meaningless. Jotaro is such a bland protagonist, and he gets no development throughout the part even though he's the center point. The whole part just feels like a big Scooby-doo monster of the week scenario but replaces monsters with stand users. That's actually a theme parts 3-5 share with JoJo, but part 3 is by far the worst with it. I honestly don't know why it's the most popular part, or why JoJo fans suck it off so much.

That's what i often see in anime discussions recently. I admit that i once thought of myself as a superior being when i caught up to Vinland Saga because of its themes and settings. I had deviated from that since i became what i hated most, which is a person who berates others just because they don't read or understand Seinen Manga or because "Your top 3 isn't the great 3 of Seinen? GTFO". When i got rid of that mentality, i had made a more true to self list of series i enjoyed just because of the story and what i didn't like. I had thought back then that If i didn't read Berserk, i couldn't call myself a true fan of manga, or if i hadn't berated Naruto because of its normie status, i wasn't a true anime fan. I took a step back and formed my own opinions on the matter and i respect others as well. In short, i'm glad i rid myself of that mentality that all shonen is normie garbage and seinen is the true man's manga. I enjoy both and i respect those who think otherwise or enjoy other series.
It's great that someone finally addresses this issue because this is my biggest problem with the Anime Community. They are unironically worse than "weebs". I've dealt with Anime Elitists who want to force thier opinion down my throat about how thier favorite series is "objectively" better than series I like. Which is ridiculous because not everyone is going to have the same taste.
They are like, "You can like it, but acknowledge it's bad". Wtf? No. If I like it? That means it's good.

@Keshuel Well, with the people I dealt with? I was not told, "You must acknowledge the flaws". I was told, "You must acknowledge it's bad, even though you like it". The second is retarded, but the former is understandable.
However, I can acknowledge the flaws of a series but sometimes depending on the reader or watcher? People are gonna have gripes with anything really. I could find something I didn't like in your favorite manga that you may not agree with. What happens is you take this objectivist approach when it comes to comparing different series. I actually agree with the fact that not everyone will see flaws in a series the same way. So, I guess you and I are more or less on the same page here with this comment in particular. You basically agree with the fact that there is indeed a level of subjectivity here.
No matter what, people craft a hierarchy on anything: food, liturature, cinema, video games, whenever something gets enough people enjoying something people will start putting things in tiers of quality and taste. You tend to get two types in this: the high class connoisseurs who think every bildungsroman about any young boy/girl finding themselves in some fishing farm is the pinnacle of fiction and the low art fanboy who will tell you Naruto is a meditation of Hegelian Dialectics while deflects all criticism or even conversing the subject based on a preconceived notion of being labeled mentally inferior. Oddly enough, both parties will overlook gems due to personal biases. We tend to think what fiction we enjoy is a mirror of what qualities of a person we are.
I do think there is good and bad work on an objective level but I'm somewhat of an opposite sturges law kind of guy; I think most stuff is generally good and the minority of stuff tends to be godawful. What I'm more interested in why you subjectively like something rather then why you think something objectively good. Objectivity is boring, subjectivity is where the interesting conversations are, or else thats where it should be.
I dont think there are steak and hamburgers in fiction, I think they're all just Hamburgers with various tastes.

Ive seen 400+ anime, some of my favs are the type that elitist would like, and yet my fav anime of all time, is still aot. I simply could care less about the popularity of a show, i just watch what i like and what i think is a good story and its fine if people disagree with my favs.
There are more anime than shoenn and seiain.
As a mostly anime only fan, _Elitists_ for us is much harsher since we're mostly treated as mere stepping stones for the Manga, LN, and WN fans lmao
It's absurd someone thinks someone is beneath them just because they read a different manga, i love REAL, Vagabond, Berserk, Kengan, Baki, Hajime No Ippo, All Rounder Meguru, Naruto, Bleach and i recomend any one of those, I've seen some Berserk fans shit on other manga when in a way they have to give an example of emotional maturity since the manga is about growth and struggle.
When elitists disagree with each other, who’s the most elitest?
Saying mid is 7 is because even though 5 is the actual middle is because 5 is the bare minimum, anything below it is garbage at varying degrees while above 5 is watchable and 7 is in the middle of that scale, it's a good show and that's it.

I mean a seinen fan is more likely to call you dumb for not enjoying/liking an animanga hence the reason why most elitist are seinen fans.
If I really want to have a fun afternoon I'll just find an elitist and tell them:
I love OnePiece, Berserk, MHA, all of Urasawa's works (including stuff that hasn't been licensed in NA, like Billy Bat), Emma, Princess Jellyfish, Vinland Saga, Osamu Tezuka, Naruto, Black Clover, Inio Asano, Skip Beat, Fruits Basket, Vagabond, etc
And I'll watch them go into a catatonic state before my very eyes.

There are definitely shonen elitists. One piece fans are a good example. Not all of them but some of them just call you a casual or act superior over people who like literally any shonen more than one piece.

Reminds me when back in highschool someone overheard that I like anime, the guy asked me if did I like Naruto and I just answered "no", he then started saying how I'm not a real anime fan because I didn't like Naruto, I just stared at him and said "a real anime fan is someone who watches a variety of anime and not only one, tell me another anime that isn't Naruto and I'll believe you're a anime fan", the guy just looked at me and said I should name a few, which I did (mostly that I mentioned where televised and I think I only mentioned one that I found on the internet), I forgot that this happened and this video made me remember lol

When I said that Attack On Titan in my fav anime. They will say I watch too little anime, normie, etc fr it’s anoyying. how I feel when I say I like Naruto and bleach more than one piece (even though ik one piece is written better) and than some dude with a zoro pfp comes and says "NARUTARD AHHHhh how can you like that show full of plot holes its trash overrated".
Every time you say anything about Naruto on a popular video's comment section, I feel that at least one comment will call you a Narutard.
Even if you do feel great about yourself by insulting some stranger because they like a show you don't, you're assuming they don't know the show is filled with plot holes and has a huge power creep problem. And they absolutely may be aware of it and still like the show.

I've had the same thing happen to me but with Naruto fans. One Piece is my favorite shounen manga and I made a comment about it somewhere and some dude with an Obito pfp was like, "One piece is soo ass broo!! Not a single well-written antagonist meanwhile Pain is one of the best villains in fiction!". Like bro, I think pirates are cool and I love good worldbuilding it's not that deep.

The outrageously obnoxious fans are usually those of mainstream mangas/animes who would lash at you for any criticism, stretch things out to defend shit, harass and even threat creators...
There is more ‘elitism’ because the fanbase is getting older, people stick to mangas/animes past +24 which naturally leads to an approach that is more critical, challenging, exigent...
And it is good for the industry both on the business level (more income) and artistic level (more recognition).
So yes everyone is free to like what they want and no one is to be ashamed because of it but that shouldn’t be used as an excuse to shut down criticism.
Some storylines, some art styles, some twists, some messages ... are more solid than others. Pretending otherwise would be unfair for (unsupported overworked and sometimes underpaid) artists.

As much as I'd love people to read or watch underrated series that deserve more respect, in the modern system we exist in, series that don't appeal to as many people as possible are already doomed. And there's nothing wrong with that, writing a manga is hard in general, regardless of its subjective quality, people piling on abuse on people who enjoy those series do the series they like no favors as it only turns more people off reading said manga/anime which in turn fuels further elitism

I have a friend who acts very elitist, and he called me "stupid" and a "hypocrite" for giving Berserk a 10 and Pun Pun a 6. Like maybe some of us don't rate what we see solely based on the themes the author presents like you do. I gave pun pun a 6 because I couldn't get into how overly depressing the manga's story and characters were. Not because I didn't understand Pun Pun's character, or couldn't understand the author's message smh. People like that get on my nerves like I can recognize and enjoy well-written stories and characters, but I'm not going to give something a high score if I truly didn't enjoy it just because it's well written.
well Punpun is well-written and you said that, if you didn't enjoy it, that's okay but giving it a 6, come on dude, just because you didn't enjoy it that doesn't justify giving Punpun that score cause your letting your emotions affect your judgement.

Amazing video as always. And yeah I agree on your take regarding elitists because some of them can be pretty mean. Not only that but sometimes I feel like the anime community can get toxic sometimes. And in the end I think the best way to treat anime and manga is to just ignore the majority and look at the art and story for what it offers.

I lean a lot more Shonen and I had a High School friend who always talked about Berserk and thought his taste were superior. That's an elitist. Also, my all time favorite series is Fairy Tail and I get a lot of flack for that
