Princess peach (originally known as princess toadstool) is the villain, she controls a parasitic "toad" fungus that took over all the other inhabitants in mushroom kingdom. Thats why she remains in power throughout all her embarassing captures by bowser. the gumbas are actually not a warrior species, they are just trying to survive being taken over by the toad fungus, which is why they are so weak and have no combat skills. So actually when mario rescues peach from bowser, he is actually rescuing the true villain and allowing her to continue the spread of her toad fungus throughout the mushroom kingdom.
