      I go to my chemistry, because it is required. I pay no attention to my prof. When I get home I watch whatever the topic is that day ,here with Mr. Johnson. For all intent and purposes, he is my prof. WOULD NOT PASS IF HE WERE NOT HERE!

    On the CO2 example, why would you draw the remaining electrons (on the O) diagonally around the O? Why wouldn't you just leave the pairs as two on top and two on the side? Okay...this question is worded really badly...sorry...does anyone understand what I'm asking?

    around 3:50 you mention that helium can only have two in the outer shell and you depict it with two dots on the top of He, my question is...
    does it matter where we put it, for instance, if we put the pair of dots on the bottom instead is that still considered correct, and is there any other elements like that?

  • @SpicedChai
    @SpicedChai 12 років тому

    >.< However Hund's Rule states otherwise when drawing orbital diagrams and writing quantum numbers ("Electrons must occupy all orbitals within a given subshell singly before pairing begins") Sooo..I figure Lewis dot formula start with 2 paired then fill the rest if theres more. Otherwise/normally, they fill singly?

    Actually as a teacher, I think it's great... I'm posting this link on my website. Why does it not bother me that this guy does it better? 1. I can learn from him. 2. My goal is for my students to succeed. If I'm not making the grade for them, I turn to other teachers for help all the time.

  • @manedurphy

    Shitballs I have a quiz tomorrow and my teacher taught this in a way where the electrons are organized in a different way than this guy's. She doesn't clockwise or counterclockwise, which apparently is wrong so I'm not so sure what to do.

    Wait... this is a high school teacher or what? o.o;
    Either way, the awkward moment, when another teacher teaches the same thing as my professor in college, and teaches it better in 10 minutes compared to 3 hours. 0 - 0

  • @SpicedChai
    @SpicedChai 12 років тому

    He's right~ Electrons seem to pair first, then fill the rest. My chem book shows this as well for the Lewis dot formula. I guess don't take the video's literal translation of order, just the final outcome of the arrangement.

  • @wizthefence11

    this taught me way more than what my teacher taught me, all he did was tell my class to print off 8 sheets of paper and do it and it counts to 5% of my final grade... and on top of that, he didnt teach us nuthin.

  • @danamarie5474
    @danamarie5474 7 місяців тому

    I wonder why this technique wasn't patterned to configure the s pair first, next adding one dot each orbital for p (one spin), and then pairing the p orbitals after 1 dot is in each (opposite spin)? Maybe that wouldn't work well for depicting molecules and compounds?

  • @thumbzupgirl

  • @nanuetsci1742
    @nanuetsci1742 7 років тому

    I really appreciate all of your videos - very well done!
    One correction for Lewis Dot method (cross-hairs) - single electrons first all around - does not correctly represent Group 2 elements like Calcium - all with 2 valence electrons in a PAIR in 1s2 orbital - paired NOT single. This exception should be noted like you noted Helium exception.

    I have a question,
    why didn't you draw the lewis dot structure of H2O as CO2
    (I mean for CO2, C was at the center and O at sides) for H2O can O be at center and H at the side?

    @AnnexedAlec He didn't show any lack of grammar. Thanks, often used alone. Very helpful, it was implied he ment "it". Chem is short for chemistry. awful isn't a weird word.
