  • In this special episode of KSL Outdoors, we take you on arguably one of the most sought after mule deer hunts in not just Utah, but maybe North America. We travel to Antelope Island, where for the past ten years Utah State Parks has given away two tags for mule deer on the island. One is a draw tag for the public, the other is for a conservation tag that is auctioned off at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo. And for the first time ever, a man won the conservation tag for $310,000, and donated it to an Army veteran. So we tag along on the hunt and introduce you to the man who donated the tag, Mike Shultz, and Tyler Jones, the veteran who received this amazing gift.

Mike Schultz is a self made man and one of the most patriotic and honest dude I know. Does good things with what he has been blessed with. By the way for the haters and nay sayers out there he was doing these things long before he became a legislator Hood on you mike. Thanks for honoring those who have honored our great country

I was lucky enough to shed hunt antelope island in 2020 (the most recent year they’ve done the shed hunt) and I’m almost positive I found this buck’s set from 2019. It has the matching “false G2’s” I’d love to give them to Tyler if he wants them.

What a fantastic buck. It's nice to know that there are still good people in this world. I super stocked for the Vet. that got to take part in this hunt of a lifetime. Thank you Mike for being an example to a lot of other people. It super nice to know that some rich person just didn't but the tag for them selves and take a big hunting guide up to make money off of his or her videos, but instead a person that has sacrificed so much for our freedom got to hunt and harvest that amazing buck. Congrats.

KSL Outdoors should tell the story of how this same "generous man" Mike Schultz; a Utah State Representative and owner of Sawmill Ranch; 1 year ago convinced the State of Utah or Bureau of Land Management to "trade" him the best 160 acres of the Hennifer Echo BLM Land that boarders his ranch; for 80 worthless acres. That was PUBLIC LAND that me and my family, and many more, have hunted for 40+ years! Now it's his, and now if I want to hunt that land that I've hunted on my entire life, I would have to pay $8,000+ for a buck tag and $12,000+ for a bull elk tag! We the people need to stand up to rich politicians before they take any more of OUR PUBLIC LAND! This comment is both RESPECTFUL, and TRUE! And unless you hunt that land, you'd probably never really know just how "generous" Mike Schultz is! Now there's more land for his rich clients like Donald Trump Jr; who has hunted their before, and less for US POOR PUBLIC LAND HUNTERS!

How TF does a deer hunt rationally cost $310k? This is why I will never be a politician because you can’t be honest and a politician. Being shady and making it look good from a public perspective isn’t honest, and having money to throw away like that and paying for a single hunt without it seeming like a waste of money doesn’t seem very much like a public servant. I’m glad he got to shoot a deer once so that we can focus on that and none of the homeless ones or the 22 a day that kills themselves because of the trauma and injuries that received nothing but a “good luck” and DD214. Idk how any veteran could feel like he deserves a 300k hunt instead of using it for other vets or homeless shelter or a nice house or 2 decent houses for 2 vets with families. It was a nice act, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a waste of money as far as charity goes. You probably helped your taxes more than you’ve help any veterans in actual need. Maybe I just take my oaths to protect AND serve my people more serious than you did. I tried to view this positively but it’s just hard to so many people supporting a $300k hunting tag or a guy who is using your money to spend irrationally on such ways idc if anyone trashes me for this because if you’re upset with my post you’re ignorant or easily swayed by tiny acts of kindness
That’s like stealing $500 from a house and buying them a $10 gift and tell you I’m looking for a new friend so you let me in and now that you trust me you let your guard down allowing me to steal but you think I’m your friend and when things go missing you think “nah they would never” and nobody realizes it.

sooo this is special just because they limit tags? what am i missing. 350 thousand to kill something that i actively have to avoid hitting when i drive because theyre so overpopulated. i couldnt think of a more "dime a dozen" animal to actively hunt than a deer. plus with all that equipment and extra hands involved, it sure removes any sort of challenge as well. honestly a ludicrous price. id expect to be going after tigers and elephants on a long getaway for that price. not killing a shitty deer because some politician wanted to look good
edit. just got to the kill... wow thats an underwhelming animal. its nice but ive seen several dozens like that or better
