Your tree reminds me of the bald cypress trees growing around Charlestown, SC after hurricane Hugo came ashore there, nothing but trunks, no branches left. However I suspect if you went there today you wouldn't be able to see the damage. Tough trees!
I may have understood this wrong but I think this is how the flat top style developing, reflecting those old trees in nature that lost all the lower branches in storms and then regrew branches at the top. Stay safe
Another favorite of mine. Especially in the 'flattop' style. I've got two myself, but shorter than your's. Fairly radical cutback you've done, but they are prolific, so likely no worries Yet another of your collection for me to follow, ha ! Cheers Sid, stay well
Thanks Bobby. I find the flat top style really interesting and look forward to styling this one in the future. Really wanted to get a chunky trunk which has been what I have concentrated on. Getting there. Glad you like it. Stay safe.
Don't have a tree like this myself, but I'll still be very interested to see how it responds to the haircut! Do you think you'll update in a few weeks?
There will be updates as and when I think I have something interesting to show. Maybe a picture in the community tab or a short vid. Stay tuned. Stay safe
Well done sid. A question on Hinoki cypress. The some of the top foliage is gradually turning brown at the end of summer here, is this normal for this kind of species to shed/drop their needles? Thx
Hi. I found this on the web. homeguides.sfgate.com/problem-browning-hinoki-cypress-43146.html As far as I can see some hinoki can turn bronze y brownish naturally. They don't however lose their leaves like the bald cypress does though. Hope the link helps. Stay safe
They are difficult to tell apart this time of year. Check the needles in spring. Dawn Redwood's needles grow opposite each other on the stem while bald cypress needles are alternate along the stem. Stay safe
Quite often not until mid/late April if I'm remembering right. Course I might not be. Also it depends on the spring weather which can bring things forward or push things back depending on lots of factors. Stay safe
@@SidsTrees Thanks for the quick reply, it seems very hard to find info about growing these in the UK. I was a little worried about mine as theres not any signs of buds yet and I only aquired it last summer. I'll keep my fingers crossed it's survived the winter.

@@SidsTrees I think you are absolutely correct, flat top is a natural style for old bald cypress trees. Young ones are pyramidal like most conifers.
Thanks for the wire trick. Never seen that before but makes perfect sense.
It's a great rule of thumb. Course it won't tell you if a branch is flexible or how brittle it might be. Stay safe
Brutal tree!! Killer nebari!!!
You should have a tree of this guy.
Greetings from México!
Thank you. It's building slowly. From the bottom up. Glad you like it. Stay safe
Wow, everything really WENT! Big moves, and I’m sure it will bounce right back.
They are srong trees. Hungry and thirsty trees too. One more year and then I will be going for the flat top look. Stay safe
Great wire tip, thanks Sid
You're welcome. Unfortunately it doesnt tell you how brittle a branch might be. Stay safe
Nice!
Nice video.

Great video Sid! I've got something like this but unsure whether it's a dawn redwood or swamp cypress. They look very similar

Hi Sid, when do your bald cypress usually start leafing out? I've heard it's quite late in the UK.
Quite often not until mid/late April if I'm remembering right. Course I might not be. Also it depends on the spring weather which can bring things forward or push things back depending on lots of factors. Stay safe

I'm sure it will be. They are tough as old boots apparently.
Sid, what would you like your final height will be?
Probably around a metre or so I think. There or thereabouts. Stay safe
I thought the little humor with the sheep was funny.
Thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed it. Stay safe
