Really good episode. Great testing and reviewing. This is the first commentary on the Connex that I feel like accurately captured its pro's and con's.

They could avoid static by not using auto, rest was indeed quite spot on.

Funny The last time I was researching FPV stuff it was Black Box. Now I find the best review yet I've seen about the Connex and Josh, the BB king, is the first review I see ;)
Great review guys mine is on the way, my brain lags way more than the 30FPS :)

You guys gotta try wifibroadcast with an Oculus Rift. It does add 150ms or so latency but you get full flexibility, you can change resolution, fps, aspect ratio, FOV of the goggles freely, for example you can simulate the fatshark's fov but with high resultion.

Guys this is the best video you have done this far. So much real world situations and tests, loved it. Also Chad awesome job asking the right questions and describing exactly what we have all been wondering. Thanks for testing and your honest feedback. Keep up the awesome work Rotor Riot. Happy flying
yes more tests, lots more tests, range tests, how multiple pilots, etc.

You have 5 rubber ducky antennas there. If you point all of them up then diversity is doing absolutely nothing. How about if you cover all 3 axis and 2x 45deg? would this eliminate freezing issue? The range at which freezing happens is really putting off, especially when you consider the price-tag of Connex system...

Guys. The added "lag" you feel is not due to the lower frame rate. It's just extra latency due to HD processing of 720p at full bitrate.
You're not flying 60 frames per second analog either. Yes, NTSC transmits 60 interlaced fields per second, but you're using CCD cameras that capture whole frames at only 30fps and LCD displays which display at 30 frames per second progressive (also whole frame at once). There's just less latency between the time the analog frame is captured, and when it's displayed.
If you tried to fly with something like an analog Effio V camera, it would feel very much like Prosight in HP mode. Just extra lag.
Otherwise your observations pretty much match my own. HQ looks great, but the added latency is too much for aggressive flying (freestyle, proximity and racing). HP mode has very little latency, but the light handling is dreadful.
BTW, you should not have seen *any* breakups in the signal with clear LoS, especially at short range. That was probably due to the broken antenna (or antennas). I had a similar experience.

I think Rotor Riot dropped the ball a bit here. I love these guys and they usually do a good job but this wasn't a proper review. They don't know how the system works and they didn't do their research before posting this. The FPV Aces guy has had this system for quite a while and should know all the specifics by now. (1) Entire review done with broken antenna. (2) Vuzix adds latency, should have used their Fatsharks. (3) There is no 100mw mode. (4) In US, system default is 200mw, does not switch automatically between 25 and 200mw. (5) It still operates in the 5 GHz band so yes, it does have to comply with regulations. (6) Frequencies can be chosen manually to avoid conflict, or ProSight can be switched on AFTER analog so Auto mode can select clean frequencies. Etc etc etc.......

  • @SirCrashaLot
    @SirCrashaLot 8 років тому +1

    Few things:
Top patch was cracked so it was 1.5 diversity :)
Stock antenna was used, that wiggle stick is so bad I wont even get into it. Yep broke mine too, its designed to go into props. there are already better alternative holders and I am about to try some other antennas.
Prosight was set to auto, now that is a major bummer, part of the appeal is to escape to say 5165 (so as far away as possible) and do not be bothered with analogue systems.
All that static flying up close has to do with freq to close to analogue or that antenna. I do not have it. Each time its powered it can jump to another freq and a guy who was not a problem becomes a problem, analog club is not dynamic!
Not sure about the latency vs lower frame rate in HQ. I think its not latency I tried looping two flags fast and I did not crash so I guess its not lag, maybe its just lower frame rate? Equally unacceptable, but sure allows for some slower cruising with amazing quality (my goggles have 75 FOV and are 720p and it helps)
HP is fine indeed, best description so far courtesy of FPV Dutchman, censored just a little : its like a bad resolution porn :)

Aw some to see vendors engaging. If you guys let the RR guys test these out in a race situation with 6-8 pilots it might help drive home a huge benefit versus the surrender analog setups, which are plain horrible at races. Solid video could change the racing game. It would be great to see a demo to illustrate that.

This video is a great example of why Rotor Riot is my favorite channel. Some channels are all bench tests. Some are all FPV videos. Some are all guys clowning around. But Rotor Riot has a great mix of fun, bench testing, screwing around, field testing (which few channels do!), honest reviews, and, obviously, the best FPV videos ever made. It doesn't hurt that everyone's such a natural behind the camera and behind the goggles. Great stuff guys and keep 'em coming!

So I have watched this vid a few times. When Kanoodle first flight flying and Chad plugged in near him It looks like he crashed due to low battery on the osd. When kanoodle was flying you can see his battery voltage dropping dramatically. Looks like it has nothing to due with powering on interference and he just wasn't paying attention to the osd, or bad battery that they thought was fully charged. Other blackouts could just be the damaged quad antenna.
Just ordered and waiting for my Connex. Finally caved plus the $100 off pushed me. I will put it to the freestyle test. Racing with it is a no brainer.

  • @blackmennewstyle
    @blackmennewstyle 8 років тому

10:18 - 10:22 If you look carefully when his troubles showed up, his power voltage was critical, i think he just lost signal because he did not check out his LIPO voltage, no more juice like it happened to Chad at 17:35...

  • @JPMediaProductions

Good review and testing. The only thing that bugs me is the digital pixelation and the breakup vs. analog static breakup. It seems that dealing with interference with analog is easier than digital as digital freezes. I'll still stick with analog for now before moving to digital. Plus Connex is too bulky compared to analog systems at the moment.

great video guys! your episodes are getting better every week.
im also flying with prosight and got the same breakup as you did and still trying to figure out what causes it.
was not an analog signal or the distance, as i was flying alone and the quad was basically beside me.
it does not happen that much if you fly with fixed frequency.
the 30fps feel is not "natural" at first but you will get used to it ... and the better picture kills it all.

Bad Chad - plugs his alien in right in front of the prosight receiver - the pizza-warming 600 MW VTX no less
I don't think that's what killed the camera connection - especially since the connection didn't recover when he unplugged the alien.

Hey guys...informative video...thanks. One suggestion...the "style" of videography that's used (not the FPV video, the video shot of the folks/equipment on the ground...where the cameraman is constantly kind of shaking the camera, making not-smooth, jerky pans, zooming in out out abruptly. I know that style is popular, but I gotta tell you, for me, it's a PAIN IN THE ASS to watch...yes, it adds a sort of "energy" to the video...makes it seem like more is happening...but how about just HOLDING THE CAMERA STILL, and stop the quick/jerky zooms. It would make the video less "exciting" I suppose, but would really, IMHO, help the viewer to get more out of the video...I believe it would lead to an overall better video. Anyway, my 2 cents.

Hm. Not much different from my Gen 1 Lightbridge setup from 2-3 years ago really. I'll hold out for 1080p at 60fps with rock solid reliability.
Still very interesting from a tech perspective so YES - let's see you guys push these things hard.
I'd like to see some range tests, indoor/outdoor and trees vs urban stuff and DEFINITELY a test of some 6-8 up head to head racing.
Considering how HUGE of an issue FPV links are at big races I think that's where the immediate benefit of this thing would be...the 60 FPS version if not the 30fps. Will it hold up to that and if so will we see better racing due to more people being able to fly to the finish?
    Do it!

  • @MichaelJustin

So...fine...new techniques is welcome...but I think there are so many issues which was tested from multiple teams and reviewers,,,that we have not a clear "Thumbs up" or "Thumbs down". This might be on some kind, the future...we need digital video...but Chad was right by asking: "Do we need more tests ?"...Yes we need them a lot...for racing, for freestyle and with multiple units together, also.
So, RR please make more tests, because right at the moment the whole systems ist just a expensive piece of technology which can work, but if not...you loose probably nearby 600€ (just for a broken cam and antenna) for sure... ;)
We got also some testing here in Germany, esapecially Philip Seidel with his blog, but it´s still a kind of controversity in this product for buying it without any "bad feelings"...

Good vid, I quit fly FPV for the pure fact the goggles images is unbearable. I commend you pilots for having such a high tolerance viewing flight with extremely poor view. I was hoping Connex was the answer... it is a good step forward but not entirely convinced. I guess I have to back to flying alone with my 3D Helis because all my friends have switched to FPV. I will keep watching your vids I a lot of respect for your opinion. If and when you guys find what I'm looking for I will try again.

More tests please. Zero/low latency HD fpv is the future..... since the first time I flew analog I've longed for a zero latency HD fpv setup. I mean who wouldn't want 1080 details and crispness while flying zero latency am I right???
For this "sport" to grow HD fpv setups are a MUST for both pilots and spectators.
After watching your video it appears there is more work that needs to be done to get us all there.
HD is where we need to be. But if it's not there yet it's not there. Thank for your honest reviews, looking forward to more.

It would have been cool to jack in a set of Dom v3s to take the Vuzix Goggle solution out of the equation. They'll also do the 16x9 picture and accept an HDMI 720p input. This is also more along the lines of what we're gonna fly with, even if they aren't a true 720p video solution. Im betting the quality difference will still be noticeable.
Those Vuzix are a pretty sweet home theater solution but it's a whole lot of head gear in the field / outdoors.
Thank you SO much for this video as I think it truly shows the capabilities of the system. I'd love to see the additional test flying 100+ yards out as well as say 5 FPV ships in the air mixing the analog and digital.
Is this system FCC certified for operation without a Ham License in the US? If it is you'd think it would be all over the web site.

  • @TheBasti05
    @TheBasti05 8 років тому

Right now I do not really see the benefits of it. If you have to fly in 60 FPS to get a good experience, than you could just kepp using analouge. And wasn't this advertised with "no need for an extra HD cam"? 720p is not really state of the art.
But I agree with Chad that for a not-racing drone its perfect. So there's just the problem that you need an extra and extremely expensive goggle for this...

You guys should look into flying the goat canyon trestle in the deserts east of San Diego. It's abandoned, it's HUGE (largest curved trestle in the world), and it's secluded. Heck of a hike to get in there, but would make an EPIC day of flying. There's also a bunch of railroad tunnels to shoot - some up to 150 feet and curved. Keep up the great episodes!

I would be worried that the interlace mode (720i60) flown fast and low (racing?) would show the typical interlace problems with the picture beeing "half updated" and "torn"... not sure how to describe it :D

I would love more Connex ProSight testing, get steele and charpu trying it as well!
Would be nice to try different headsets, maybe specially the FatShark HD V2 or Dominator V3 because (I think) they are the most widely used FPV headsets out there :D

I agree with Chad 100%, I would love to put this on my 450 quad for cruising and getting some nice AP but it's another couple of revisions away from being mini quad acceptable...I wouldn't even put it on a wing because the range is only 1500 feet I believe?

Surprisingly good for early tech. Since there is an apparent data budget with the 720p30 vs 720i60 I would love to see a 480p60 mode where the extra data is used for image redundancy to extend range / reduce breakup.

Nice job Christian! My main issue with the Connex is that you need a tripod for the receiver, and I just love the portability of FatSharks.
Say, I challenge RotorRiot to have a Tiny Whoop competition? What do you say?

Higher definition cameras/receivers are great and will enhance any flying experience, but humans don't see in 16:9. If anything a GoPro's "SuperView is closer to human visual field-of-view (minus the fisheye) than any other camera out there. Companies should focus more on creating a higher definition "human" field of view and flying experience in next gen camera/receivers and not try to create a higher def "cinematic" experience. It doesn't translate well to a sport that tries to put you "in the cockpit", not "in the theater seat."

Oh, and 30 fps is what I get with the analog systems? right?
with the price tag it has It would be quit the investment. However being new still to fpv, I'm thinking this sounds great with the true 16:9 HD image and a much cleaner image than the best 5.8ghz analog. Distance testing, tree testing, backside of barns testing would all be great :)

I'm good! I'll stick to my LaForge Rx and Hawkeye Tx. There is no way I would put $300 worth of VTx and camera on a Quad that I beat the crap out of! And that HD antenna is truly horrible.

Wasn't the Connex system at the Drone Nationals having issues left and right? ...not only that, but those pilots that went up with that system (which were few) were basically unwatchable to the common fpv person, as no one had that system. So I was like... okay, great... I can't watch this person, however I'm standing in the RotorRiot tent, so I'll just turn around and shoot the shit w/ Steele and the crew. =D

Here is the deal. We have sufficient video now with analog. I'm satisfied that I can see all i need to. Why would I want to spend more money. I would rather make progress in my flying (that means crashing repeatedly) and replacing more cameras and vtx's. I think they are wasting time and money. I will never fly with a go pro either cause the flying is for me myself and I. Maybe that's because I'm not from this look at me I'm great if you don't believe me go check out my "gayassbookpage" yes I said it Facebook is gay. Too many people are living life just to put it on Facebook and say look what I did aren't you jellious yet. It's pathetic!

These new digital transmission systems are certainly interesting, but what makes me hesitant is that it's a digital trasmission.
Let's suppose you're flying over a bridge and the signal goes down, if you have digital trasmission you get black screen. If you have analog trasmission you still can see sometimes a little picture that can help you locating. Remember also that if you loose signal, in analog you can just stand up ( if you were sit down ) or rotate your goggles ( let's suppose you have a patch antenna ) to get back the signal. I mean.. you can recover the signal much faster than a digital trasmission. Last but not least.. digital trasmission are more likely to interference..
I'd like to try.. but i think it's too early to use them as fpv racing/freestyle system.
If you use it, for example, to see what your big quadcopter is recording through his 1080p/4k camera this would be best solution and would be very useful to drone videomakers.
I'm sorry for my "scholastic" english.. i hope you can understand what i want to say.
Anyway, as always, great video Rotor Riot :)

possible direction for future tests, different goggles. Compare whatever these were with fatshark, headplay, etc. How much of the feeling and fov comments were due to the different goggles and how much the camera+link.
Also how well does it interop with analog if you manually set frequencies (both in the normal bands and outside).

Funny thing is you had it on Auto which is absolutely not recommended at all when flying with anyone else. If someone else powers on and sweeps you will disconnect. You should have configured it to PS-A, PS-B, or PS-C

I have a kind of bad issue. Im stuck with a pwm radio right now, and am planning to buy a radio that could take some cppm or sbus for small quads. Im 15 so i cant dish out a bunch of money on a taranis. Does anyone know if i could use a turnigy 9xr pro with a frsky jxt module and get all 16 channels and sbus. If not is there a way to tweak my settings? If this is relevant i would use a sp racing evo f3 fc. I dont know if i automatically get 16 channels for using the jxt or i have to go into my setting somewhere and mess around. Thank you. Any help is appreciated

I wonder if the ProSight has channel hopping, much like a wireless router in auto channel mode. This would explain intermittent interference when introduced to another signal. If so pre-selecting an unused channel if possible might resolve the any interference issues. Also pre-selecting 100mw mode persistent may also help as the adjustment may not be quick enough for sudden signal degradation vs the gradual degradation of just getting further away.

the more I think about this, It's probably the limitation of the chipset they use. I mean they design all this device but not the actual IC. The component is from a manufacturer and it could be some limitation in that chip. 24,30 and 60fps are basic of video. 48fps is also possible and was used in some movies but is not that common. I think it a great start and I see that people do buy this HD system so this mean that Connex can and will bring a better product next time. Time will tell.

I have 3 connex mini transmitters and a receiver. My first unit worked well for a while, but now the video is too shakey. The other 2 units never would link. I understand how to plug them together to link transmitter to receiver, but it never worked. I contacted connex several times , but they never responded. I spent several hundred dollars converting 3 of my fpv racers to connex. I am throwing it all away because it is shit. Do not buy them They don't work as advertised, no support...

All the scientific testing, the painstaking integration and
the serious brain power involved in moving our video from analog to digital is
    greatly appreciated. Once fully vetted,
digital video will open up a whole world of better possibilities for FPV and
external viewers. What was done here is
so much more close to where the rubber meets the road, this is exactly what we
need to see and how it works in the environments we fly and with the people we
    fly with. Thanks Rotor Riot!
