  • This song marks Kate's first time playing electric guitar and bass on a recording.
    In an interview shortly after the album's completion, Del Palmer described Kate's adoption of a new instrument:
    She said to the guitarist we were using, "I'm really into the guitar. I'd really like to be able to play it," and he said, "Oh, here, play this one (a Fender Stratocaster) for a bit." So, he showed her a few chords, and a week later she was in front of this Marshall stack in the studio giving it her all! I've never seen anything like it. She's a natural - she was playing lead guitar and no one would know it wasn't an experienced guitarist."

    I wanted the butterflies in this video to represent bringing hope to the people being experimented on by unseen forces in the building, but 'they' - the unseen forces, want to catch the butterflies and stop them from bringing joy and hope to those voiceless people - or lost souls, that have been incarcerated.
    This song is from the album 'The Red Shoes' and marks Kate's first time playing electric guitar and bass on a recording.

      +Dan Smart Hi Dan. It's a KT symbol that has appeared on all of the Kate Bush albums so far. Mostly hidden in the albums artwork. There are some pictures of where it appears on some of the albums at this link: facebook.com/KateBushPictures/photos/a.362424693942262.1073741850.259685864216146/362424513942280/?type=1&theater

    No, she really doesn't sound like an experienced guitarist here. Except in the sense that she knew what sound would be perfect for this track, and she got it.

    It's incredible how she creates atmosphere with her violins and other instruments. It takes me from joy to fear to reminiscence to love to wonder, and being 16 and now 57. She's always been there. I ADORE her. So much. Loving vibes from New Zealand. ❤🙏

    I am so impressed with this videoproduction. It is really outstanding in its unrest and the tension it evokes. The original music is already outstanding, but the extra effects added, enhance it with good balance. When listening to this song, I always wondered what has inspired Kate to write it. I found the answer below in the comments. Thanks Paul! It always was and is one of my favorite Kate Bush songs.

    What can I say, other than this is absolutely brilliant. I love every bit of it, apart from the very sad "got you" of the butterfly at the end and Kate's singing skull (only joking). The music synch's perfectly with the imagery and I admire the effort you've put into making this work as a visual whole, in particular the way you've enhanced the Ex IV footage. It's really interesting to get someone else's take on the song so different to my "Let's Danger it up" but none the worse for that.

    • @Picnicl
      @Picnicl 5 років тому +7

      Kate Bush's quote on the song is "Big Stripey Lie is a law unto itself and nearly didn't make it on to the album. It was originally a very early song which I'd written to a drum sequence of Del's and I suddenly decided I was going to play guitar all over it - I'd only had one lesson and couldn't get the chords together that I'd been taught so I put up the backing track and thrashed. I had a fantastic time - completely indulgent but I loved every minute. Because the guitar was so wild, the song took on the shape of wandering in to someone's emotional world which is jungle-like and "wild". It was very experimental but people seemed to like it. It was lovely to work with Nigel Kennedy again - interesting that he didn't need to ask what the track was about. Takes one to know one..."
      Now, in response to your question, Kate doesn't often, if ever, seem to publically compare songs with each other. And no wonder - it'd take a book to try to be comprehensive on the matter - plus an artist might allow dual meanings in songs that it would seem strange or spellbreaking or pretentious to explicitly explain to the average audience. There are several themes that have, consciously or unconsciously, been there right throughout her career e.g. apprehension at forging something new in terms of how it might affect something existing in oneself or in others (e.g romance, creativity), being moulded by the influence and care of others, e.g.family, teachers, sex and sensuality and romance and emotion (sometimes compared to forces in nature or astronomy) ,character-driven pieces, often with a sinister theatricalnesss partly borne out of old movies, externally or internally political themes like war, nuclear war, smoking when pregnant, incest, relationship arguments or tragedies, Irish and British history/emotional preoccupations , and several others picked up.
      (1) Coincidental or not, Kate mentioned 'experiment' in her quote. It has the strings and prominent drums, as does Experiment IV. Both songs convey a sweeping, uncontrollable madness/sadness/fear.
      (2) Nigel Kennedy plays on Big Stripey Lie and The Fog. The Fog suggests several of the elements that I mentioned above - it's kind of arguably the quintessential Kate Bush song in tying together musical and thematic aspects. "Can you hang on to me" from Big Stripey Lie reminds me of The Fog's parental letting go/nurting from a short distance "Just put your feet down child". But "Can you hang on to me" is also something someone might say to someone when they're dying. The Red Shoes album was written just after Kate Bush's mother had died. Even the erratic or flatline reading on a hospital heart monitor can be a kind of 'Big stripey lie' about the character of someone and/or their effect on others. Several songs on The Red Shoes have an eccesiastical quality, which some have attributed to her interest in what Prince was doing who, of course, contributed to Why Should I Love You? God might be a big stripey lie to some people. Or all those songs of fear and disappointment - in This Woman's Work, the expected promise of a baby turns out to end up a big stripey lie. The poisoner in Coffee Homeground.. there's always been doubts about relying on something or someone in some Kate Bush songs, most largely in Heads Were Dancing.

    Please see my channel for a magical tour of 96 of Kate Bush's songs, including this confident, with well judged elements of scariness and excellent, and not overused, use of some images from Experiment IV and Rubberband Girl, video by MrMarrs for Big Stripey Lie. The playlist order is to tell a story/create a mood.

    • @nicd7540
      @nicd7540 5 років тому

      Why would you pinch MrMarrs' work? Let the hits be made on his own channel. Please.

    • @Picnicl
      @Picnicl 5 років тому +1

      a) If MrMarrs ever says that he doesn't want me to use his videos on my channel, I'll replace them.
      b) Why do you assume that to be the case? i.e. why do you presume to know his feelings on the matter? Many creators would had be happy for their work to be incorporated in to carefully chosen playlists (or any playlist). I put a lot of work in to choosing a playlist order to convey a story.
      c) Do you see any adverts on my channel? No. Why do you think hits are necessarily so important? I'm not a bean counter. Being on people's playlists will actually increase the number of hits his videos get.
      d) Don't go overboard about what constitutes people's own work where UA-cam videos are concerned. It's Kate Bush's music and sometimes there are some extracts from her videos - she or EMI could get any of the videos removed anytime they want if they chose to, regardless of what extra work is in the impressive videos.
      e) What's with the passive aggressive 'Please'? You think you have a right to determine my use of videos as immoral. You're not being particularly polite so don't pretend to be.

    As the retired pro psychic I must account for the phenomena of lying. As sensitives we experience evasions and defensiveness. The biggest lies are the denials of suffering and the exploitation of these otherwise healthy frailties. I never take advantage of other people's suffering.

    As a schizophrenic epileptic, watching this and absorbing it makes me gutted that I am medicated.
    Advice from anyone in the know as to how I can come off psych meds safely would be greatly appreciated.

    • @CalumRhysJones
      @CalumRhysJones 5 років тому +6

      Don’t ever feel that being on psych meds is in anyway a bad thing. Just like if you were born without a leg you’d have a prosthetic one, we take what we need. I’m sure you’re a wonderful person & clearly so strong for just speaking so openly anyway. There’s no need for you to come off the meds, unless you really want to.❤️❤️❤️

    • @JulienArbor
      @JulienArbor 4 роки тому

      Perhaps you simply have epilepsy ...some forms of epilepsy present symptoms much like a psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia and any of the DSM diagnoses such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, hallucinations, delusions, etc., etc. Psychiatric labeling is a form of oppression and more about control and billing than having any basis in reality. I’m not suggesting the symptoms don’t exist but that there’s quite often an underlying medical condition that is never properly addressed and hence the life time “psychiatric disorder”. Trauma and stigmatization also only increase the problem.
      Is your epilepsy under control? Some forms can be lethal if not controlled and even other types of epilepsy can prove dangerous if not adequately controlled whether through pharmaceuticals or cannabis. If you want to get off psychotropic medications I suggest you research safe ways of doing it at sources such as Mad In America, MindFreedom International, Safe Harbor Alternative Mental Health, Judi Chamberlin, Peter Breggin, Bruce E. Levine, Joanna Moncrieff, Ted Chabasinski, Mad Pride, World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry, Icarus Project, Hearing Voices Network, Critical Psychiatry Network, National Empowerment Center, Rooted in Rights, and even Citizens Commission on Human Rights (begun by Dr. Thomas Szasz who was not a Scientologist but partnered with them for financial support). There are a growing number of people who are involved in a more healthy, holistic, and positive approach to dealing with mental health that is opposed to the use of psychotropics particularly administered involuntarily, and also the increased understanding of the dangers associated with psychotropics along with safer alternatives. Keep reaching out until you find the alternative help you need and welcome from a fellow survivor! 😊
