Good video. You apparently do not have a lot of training but you have a lot of common sense...impressive. If it helps, the stator produces 3 phase AC current. The rectifier converts the AC to DC like a generator or alternator in a car. Newer rectifiers include a voltage regulator so they do not over charge the battery. Some older ones do not have a regulator. If you fully charge your battery before taking some units out, you can easily overcharge the battery. I wish you well.

@@SpeedSpecter Correction. I wrote basically the same thing to Dangar Marine and he informed me that some stators are not 3 phase. My take from that is that we need to check the specs on our outboard before working on it. Some may not need a DVA.
After seeing marine labor rates, I bought a Mercury Service Manual on my engine...not the aftermarket manual. I recommend everyone who intends to work on their outboard do that.
I also found out that after a certain age, I could attend a technical class on marine engine repair... if the class is not full. I did that after retirement. I only have experience working on my outboard so I am very limited in what I can do but I have saved some money.

@mcconn746 lol, you tried to sound like a bigshot know it all but failed shamefully. It's clear in the video, this is a simple 2 wire, single phase stator. There you go again with your 'DVA'... give it up son

Great video can you please tell the colors of the cables that go connected to the rectifier

Curious your voltage at higher rpm. I have this same engine it's between a 73 and 75. These engines don't have voltage regulators. They will push up to 17 volts. I'm trying to find a solution to regulate the voltage for mine so I can run accessories. You definitely need to make sure your running a lead acid flooded battery or it will explode an AGM or sealed battery. Thankfully a friend caught this with mine.

I got a 120 Evinrude 2 stroke have the same problem. It’s a old motor hard to find new regulator

Great video. Exactly my problem and a very similar if not identical engine. Do you have a link to share to make sure I get the right rectifier?

Probably stator coil wires corroded, then shorted, then too much current thru rectfier and the next thing to fail would have been an overcharged battery. BUT did you catch any fish?😅

I do not charge my trolling moter battery with the trolling moter hooked up for fear of over charging newer electronics I have a trolling moter disconnect when charging battery 115 merc. Just thought I would add this.

I also have an old 85 Merc no charging. I believe, suspect those wires are corroded which seems to be a common Mercury issue, are the problem. Were you able to find marine wires to replace those or did you just use everyday automotive wires?

I just used automotive wires still holding up great
