It just amazes me how Alex uses “those” chords together to create a masterpiece! Thanks for the breakdown!

For years I played that A7sus4 with an open G. Who knew?! (Nick knows.)
For the curious gear aficionados, Alex used a Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion (first iteration, with a stopbar tailpiece) to record Tom Sawyer. His amps on Moving Pictures are his veteran Hiwatt 100s, and well as his (then) recently acquired Marshall 4140 Club & Country 100w 2x12 combos. A rare amp nowadays.
Alex first became enamored by the 4140 while catching Alan Holdsworth in concert back in dear old Blighty. In the UK, the 4140s would have come from Marshall with EL34s, and this is what Alex would have heard Alan using. But, the North America importer of Marshall amps back then insisted Marshall install 6550s, rather than EL34s. So, I always wondered, "Did Alex have EL34s, or 6550s in his 4140s?" Turns out, he ran them with the 6550s.

it looks like Alex plays it with either an open or a muted (open) G... he certainly doesn't fret it like in this video.

    Way 😎 cool
Can we have more “how to riff” for the synths or keyboardists?

Alex’s playing is a perfect example of how not knowing theory can expand your palette. He admits not knowing theory, or the names of the chords he’s playing, yet he continued to innovate throughout his career. Pure talent, no training. He should have several chords named after him. FYI, he uses that same chord in the intro to The Camera Eye (Bflatsus2/C)

He may not realize or downplay his actual knowledge and he may not know what to call certain things, but he certainly has an ear and a sense for the harmony and the voicings of the chords for what music Rush was making; theory can’t give you an ear, you really need a bit of both to a certain degree to “figure out” other people’s music! Actual playing experience in a given genre also helps tremendously in that endeavor. The more experience, the easier it gets.

Nice video! It would be nice to know what audio gear was used in the guitar signal chain (guitar, amp, audio interface, cabinets, mic's, effects, software, etc). Who knows, I might want to follow links to Sweetwater to buy some of that stuff. Thanks to Sweetwater for continuing to push the envelope on what it means to be a music store.

I really appreciated you breaking the song down, but I wish you would’ve covered the arpeggio. I still haven’t been able to figure it out. I can’t figure out the arpeggio pattern.

Hey Nick, good job and good sense of humor too !!have a great holiday season !, and thanks for the video; your right, there’s just way too many terrible transcriptions of so many songs floating around because people aren’t critically listening to harmony and voicings or even ambitious enough to actually learn any theory to have even a clue lol 👍

I love you for doing this Nick but you lied 🤥 The title of the video is, `How to play “Tom Sawyer” by Rush’ but you only show us how to play the first part of the song😭. A part two would be awesome however, I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. The fact that you did this at all is great. Thank you 🙏

I like your pleasant voice and appreciate the opportunity to learn this song the correct way. But, for me, continuously reintroducing the common errors makes the learning process convoluted and tedious. Maybe just point out "this is an area where people get it wrong," and show it the right way.
