The Debate about 1-Day Masonic Degrees

- How do you feel about 1 day degrees? Should we have them? Should we stop having them? Or is there another solution?
In this video, Paul Cameron, WM of Wheaton Lodge 269 objectively discusses the valid reasons why some well respected Masons are FOR having one day degrees, and he objectively discusses the equally valid reasons why other well respected Masons are AGAINST having one day degrees.
More importantly, he explains the major problem that is being caused as result of debating whether we should or shouldn't have Grand Master Festivals , Blue Lightnings, or other forms of one day degrees.
Paul also outlines a solution to the problem that you can adopt in your lodge immediately, before your next stated meeting. It includes best practice ideas from as far away as the Province of West Lancashire in the United Kingdom thanks to a member of Starkie Lodge 1070.
We hope this video will change the way you think about 1 day Masonic degrees and how we can best respond after each event occurs.

NOTE: This channel is for Masons who want to improve themselves and their lodges. This channel is NOT for debating what masonry is about. We will not tolerate hate speech or abusive language in the comments and will delete them. There are LOTS of channels that enjoy that debate, we are not one of them.
If you are interested in learning more about Masonry, check out the channel "What is a Mason?", we highly recommend it. He does a good job and speaks with sincerity.

Thank you Richard. This year has been a bit of a whirlwind having to learn the WM chair a year early and taking on some other projects, however 2019 my goal is to get in a regular rhythm of putting out consistent information as the ideas to improve lodges are coming in from all over the globe. Thanks for your patience in 2018.
At the end of the day, does it increase numbers or not? I can only speak for my state, but each candidate still "owes" their lodge a proficiency for each Degree. I do recommend being raised in person over watching a 1 day. I do however recommend participating in the 1 day. When you love the craft, it's great when you get to spend hours rehearsing with brethren and it all comes to fruition at the 1 day.
lodge is encourage the newly RWorshipful Sir
I am not particularly a fan of the One Day Class . Having said that, I will also tell you that I have been involved in every One Day Class that the Grand Lodge of Ohio has put on, I had the privilege of being able to plan one of these along with 3 other Masters.I do this by either mentoring or participating in the work of the degree to give the candidates a positive outlook and provide some meaning. One thing that we do in our Lodge is to encourage the newly raised Mason to come back to Lodge and actually be a candidate for the Degree, and experience what is to participate in the work; either as a candidate, or a person who helps to put on the degree. What I do not like is the same thing I did not like about my Scottish Rite Reunion experience. I was in a room with over 200 other Masons, and except for a very few in the cast, it was obvious that they were reciting from a script and were in a hurry to get through their part. I have seen this at degree exemplifications also where the Degree was done beautifully, and then the person giving the lecture so fast you can hardly understand what he said, let alone garner any meaning from it. I believe that if a Degree well done and with meaning, no matter what the setting, is a lot more impressive, and gives the candidate something to think about. I have chaired and served on the investigating committee and had a man come through and basically said to me. " I know I will be voted in. Just tell me if you are going to have a one day class so I can get through it and petition the Shrine." I will not discuss what happened, except it took him a lot longer to achieve his goal, and certainly not in my Lodge. To sum it up, You only get out of Masonry what you are willing to put into it, no matter how you receive the Degrees. The other thing that has to happen, if a candidate DOES come back to the Lodge, he needs to made to be felt welcome and actually part of the Lodge.
Thank you for your Input, and I hope you have a good time at Hrand Lodge and get the opportunity to say hello to the JGE from Ohio. He is one of my Lodge Brothers.
Dan Floyd. PM and soon to be WM of College Hill-Harry /s. Johnson 641 Cincinnati, Ohio
Brother Floyd, I think the first line of your comments "lodge is encourage the newly" was inadvertently moved there as you posted, and just to clarify out of respect for those who do have an R before their name, I have not yet earned that designation, just the WM of our lodge. All that out of the way, thank yo so much for comments! Your one statement said it all, "You only get out of Masonry what you are willing to put into it, no matter how you receive the Degrees." I couldn't agree more. I like the idea of having the candidates come back to be a candidate to the lodge and be a candidate. That's a fantastic idea. If they choose just to participate in one, perhaps they could be the candidate for one of the practices and run the whole thing through for them. Really great idea, thank you! I wasn't able to connect with your JGE since I didn't see this comment until today (was offline for the weekend), but I'll remember it should I ever meet someone from your lodge in the future. Thank for the idea again. I'll be adding that to my list of best practices and would be happy to share more with you directly. I found your email, so I'll send them to you there.
I am also in Ohio. I was not a fan of the one day class when I found out about it. With that being said, all 3 of the candidates who went to the class have attended every lodge meeting we've has since they were raised. I guess what is important is that they show up, volunteer, and continue learning, which they are all doing. I am now an advocate. I still believe the "old school" way is better but, the one day class has it's merits for some people.
I really like this video....what is said and how you say it...
Thank you David Lawrence. Now that my term in the East has concluded, I'll be adding more to this channel with regularity. I just posted a new one today. Thanks for sticking with the channel during the absence.
David Lawrence Yea you can tell he loves this part of his life and respects it all soo much . Mad love
Thank you

❓ I hope that means you liked it.
I see no benefit of a 1-day degree other than allowing someone to "join the club".
Third year Worshipful master and Orange Card Holder. I can't be a fan. I have coached many candidates and teach not only catechism but explain the degrees as I coach. I feel it would weaken the craft because the achievement element is non-existent. It shouldn't be handed out as candy. Maybe joining another club would be satisfying. The other members (the ones that did all three degrees) would be against them from the start. It sounds like a millennial thing to me. Possibly the death of the craft as we know it.
I’m one of those potential candidates that are lost in the void I grew up in NJ but now I’m in FL . What do I do ? Honestly ? Besides that what do I say ? How do I say or ask it to someone without sounding like I’m a bad guy looking for something for nothing ?
Hello, I just found your channel yesterday and I'm still going thru the videos and watching them. Honestly, maybe you've covered them already, but since I just found about your channel, I didn't get a chance to watch it all yet. So I wanted to ask you a couple of question. I really want to join, but I'm Muslim and English is my second language. Even if I get accepted, do you think these will be a problem?
Hi Boz, thanks for your question. Being Muslim is not a a problem at all. The important thing is that you do believe in a Supreme Being. Personally, I'm a Christian so I can't speak for the specifics of what's taught in your religion, but in the Bible it says over and over (one of the most frequent commands actually) is to love your neighbor and not to judge, not to love only those people who believe as you do, or those who agree with you, just to love each other. One of the reasons you must (required) believe in a Supreme Being is so we can trust that you believe there are personal consequences - from the Supreme Being you believe in - for immoral words and actions. I hope that helps. There is a great UA-cam channel called "What is a Mason" that can help you with any other questions about joining.
Great presentation explaining both sides of the 1 day degree. Very thought provoking.
Thank you Lumark630! I appreciate support.
Dear Brother on your video Memorization Tactics for Freemasons it seems that the comments have been disabled FYI.
Thanks Jack Brown, the comments haven't been disabled, I just block and/or delete any comments with profanities and hateful comments. So if a comment didn't go through, either a word got flagged, or I deleted the comment. The purpose of this channel is to help Masons and strengthen their lodges, not to debate what Masonry is or isn't, or to defend the fraternity from hateful comments. There are lots of channels that welcome that type of rhetoric, but it's not appropriate for what we are trying to accomplish on this channel.
Greetings... I really enjoyed you video, would love to speak with you offline if that's okay.
It's orribile you killing masonry. Master in one day, 32 in one day thanks the G.A.D.U. in the rest of the world we are still practicing masonry. Please stop. When they told me this thing I thought it was impossibile.
You are just baba on
