The True Cost Of Owning A Porsche 993: How Much I Spent On Repairs Right After Buying It.

- The cost of owning a 993 911 isn't cheap, especially right after you buy one, even if it's a nice example. In my experience you should set aside 10% - 20% of the purchase price of ANY air cooled Porsche for repairs, deferred maintenance and elective modifications...and hope you don't have to spend it!
Thankfully, I'm well aware of the cost of owning a 993 and for me, the experience of owning, driving and ultimately enjoying the last of the air cooled 911's makes it totally worth it.
In this video, I'll give you a full accounting of what's been spent on this Porsche 993 in the last 3,000 miles, including the repairs I had performed on the car along with what positive results I have realized as a result of doing this work.

6 mos later follow up video: Why I sold my Grand Prix White 993?😄 Great looking car. GP white is a great functional color, especially in the summer.
I don’t know man. One lesson I’ve learned over time from my PorscHE ADHD is never say “forever 911” bc it’s not realistic…but there’s something just right for me to have a 993 in the garage.
So, I doubt I’ll be selling this one for awhile.
I also picked up an 86 coupe last week to tick the box of having a g body in the garage sitting next to the 993. So…that feels right as well given I started collecting with a 993 and an 86.
The ice green 76 is going back on the market in the next couple of weeks. That one has been a very financially painful endeavor and I am ready to take my losses on it and move it along to the next guy.
Back to your original comment about selling…I guess we’ll see but I kind of doubt it’ll go anywhere anytime soon.
Thanks for watching!
Right on. It's hard to experience them all if you keep them all!
@@Rennthusiast I enjoy seeing your ADHD. My wife would not be supportive of me in that part of the "hobby". You remarked that you wanted the modified white 993 to put it back to stock. Why not do that to a known quantity - the polar silver? Frankly, I thought the tasteful mods you made to it were awesome, and it would be easy to get some black stock seats and door cards (made if necessary).
@@Rennthusiastthis is a solid reply, I appreciate the honesty, humility & passion - you're a good dude Will!
How much should it cost to charge the air con on my 97'?
Delete sticker and cup wheels. She’ll be perfect
100% - bbs e88 or ruf 👍
Hey Will. What a lovely car. Whatever you want to do with the wheels and decal script will be fine. If it were me, however, I'd go with the original wheels and remove the decal. Have fun!
Car looks great. I like the wheels that are on it. Informative video, enjoyed it thanks
Really enjoyed hearing your thought process on this stuff. I learned a lot and this sets a good example of how to be proper caretakers of these beautiful machines. Cheers
Thank you 🙏🏽
Both wheels look great. As for the sticker, it add some interest. Keep it on. Love that interior color. You did good.
Thanks for the update. Glad you separate the upgrade versus maintenance costs. I have stock ecu, shocks, exhaust, sway bars, etc. I want to save money for maintenance and i guess i dont want to know the performance difference with your car :) i would delete the script since i like the more stock look but it does add some visual interest and i know that pure white (or pure black) would not be your first choice in car colors.
Beautiful car. Perfect stance as you mentioned, and I dig the Carrera wheels even if they aren’t “period correct”, I’d lean towards ditching the side lettering, I’ve never really liked that, personally, but you do you. I would have kept the ducktail, I thought it looked awesome, but I get it. Good content, always well put together.
Well, I thought it looked great the way you bought it but each to their own :) Nice car and good vid!
Great video! Even though I don't have a 993, I always glean some mod \ update that I can carry over to my 996.1. I'm OCD about keeping records, and wanting to make sure the car is up to spec.
I agree with your sentiment to switch wheels to Cups and to delete Carrera script. Cheers!
I don’t normally like the side script but I kind of dig the look of the car.
Not paid much attention to this 993 and i love this as well
As an owner of a 95 C4 I appreciate your thoughts on these non vario ram models. I would go back with the cup wheels and lose the decal. The spoiler wall is a pretty easy and inexpensive fix. Love the front bumper. Immo block is great and you just pull out the leftmost gauge (fuel and oil level) and replace the original. Smaller hands are helpful.
You have now inspired me to do some upgrades on mine.
Thanks for the insight. Thanks for watching 🙏🏽
I have pretty large hands and getting the immoblock installed was a tedious and partially painful exercise, but eventually I shoved it in there. It's important to remember that you lose the lights alerts when you exit the vehicle. I've forgotten to turn off the headlights countless times when parking, but I was saved by my habit to look back at the car to admire its beauty. "oh shit, forgot the lights again". heh
Good call on the Montana LLC. Robbery for us hobbyists. Haven’t done it yet but plan to at some point.
Sick ride! Thank you so much for the excellent breakdown.
I'd delete the sticker and go with the cup 2's
Grand Prix white is one of my favorite colors, nice looking 993. I would go with the lighter wheels. No script. Never cared for the basket handle. Have fun!
Sticker looks good 👍
Leave the Carrera wheels. I could go either way with the side script.
I think it's interesting to compare this with the 1996 Boxster. Both these cars were sold alongside each other at the time and both share seats, steering wheels and gearshift. In period reviews the Boxster was the better drivers' car. Even though it's not air cooled they still require a significant investment for deferred maintenance (as these cars are so cheap people usually can't afford them) and would be interesting to compare.
I bought my first 993C2 new (rare as I rarely buy new cars). I bought my second 993 Turbo used. I kept the C2 for 15 years. Every dollar I spent on it in maintenance and Mods $20k), I more than recovered the purchase price and everything dollar I spent on the car when I sold it. I still have the Turbo which I get insane offers for.
Looks a lot better the way you bought it. (IMO)
The Carrera script is my least favorite but that’s just me.
The duck bill is a classic Porsche option and looks really good on the 993 imho.
The splitters were tasteful and added a more sporty look while also making the front end more rake-ish if that makes sense.
It’s ironic to me I can’t afford one but will be getting a 991.1 S instead which is a helluva lot more car for the money anyway, just not the air cooled retro feel many are wanting.
I’ll gladly trade the much greater speed, better handling, better reliability and safety and comfort of a newer model since I can only afford two Porsches in the lower to medium price range.
I agree with your instincts; go back to cup wheels and ditch the decal. Side comment: euro-bumper on front (without the bumperettes) would've looked good, too. Great channel!
Thanks!
I ran the euro bumper on my last 993 and love it, but wanted something more correct on this one.
Great car, not sure why you switched out from the sliver one but I know you love variety! I have a 993 and don’t love the look of the cups and have retro Fuchs. I suppose if you already have them mounted then just go back and forth!
I love it. The wheels are incredible. Personally I don’t like stickers or vinyls on my Porsche so I would remove that. Incredible looking car
Put the original wheels on, nothing ages better than original specs. Thank you for sharing
The bbs wheels go with sticker. If you put cup 2s on take decals off. I have an all factory spec 97 targa so appreciate originality but can’t say I mind those 2 mods you have. I might need that immoblock, all the best!
Looks so much better without the ducktail and splitter.
Now all it needs is the cup wheels and sticker delete 👍
Good video. IMHO, I suggest delete the side script and go with the cup wheels. That’s what I run on mine. I love them.
As I know you enjoy spirited drives, what tires have you found perform best? Maybe that would make a good video.
Are there any negatives from the installation of the immo?
Great car, btw. Thanks for all the content. It can’t be easy balancing family, career and this.
Thanks for the comment.
1. Pilot sport 4S’s hands down.
2. No negatives that I have seen so far 🤞🏼
You’re welcome. These videos are a labor of love for me. The cars are my passion and I so enjoy meeting people through the channel, not to mention having it give me an endless stream of direct messages and comments from people who want to talk Porsche 😂
What an amazing car!
Love the 996 wheels, I know they are not period correct but for some reason they work great.
Decals are really up to you, they look good with or without, obviously the guy was going for a look, along with the ducktail. Although I would have kept the ducktail. Wheels, whatever you like is what you should go with. Current wheels though are not my favorite.
love the peanut butter guts. nice color combo. +1 for the CUP II's.
does it have the golden rod as well?
where's the 996 three spoke? are you going to keep the four spoke?
Thx.
Yes, gonna keep the 4 spoke.
Agree with the deleted duck tail and front splitter, and I would prefer the cup2 wheels. I'd lose the sticker.
I own a Black 96 993 Targa, I have the turbo twist wheels which I personally like very much. I'd recommend which ever wheels you like, it's your car, but I also understand your drive towards originality (100% stock 67 GTO and 77 280-z). I liked the script with the duck tail, but would delete if your goal is originality. The rear brake light is only original on the Targa and Cab, If I recall correctly.
If you’re talking about the basket handle, it’s def original to the 95 993.
Nice 993
Wheels are good
Stickers are good
Don’t forget to
Replace the rear passenger seat belt cover
keep that carrera door sticker. revert to the original cup wheels. beautiful.
Stickers must go…. Imo 🙃 Cashmere interior / black dashboard is classic 993👍🏻 Nice😎
The sticker can stay or go. Keep those wheels on though. Those wheels make it stand out due to the skinny spokes. Makes the car unique. Most purists are running the Fuchs, and though they are nice, yours stands out from the crowd. I hadn’t seen many 993’s with your wheels in person or on UA-cam. The cup 2’s can continue to play backup.
Ditch the Carrera sticker for sure. Besides that it is incredible!
Car looks good, Will, I'd keep the script, seems to add a little flare.
Go cup 2, remove sticker :-)
Had a ‘95 C2 for a year and it cost me about $5K to detail it. And nothing else was needed.
Have had a ‘96 C4S also for one year (GP White) and it is going on $20K including detail. Both with less than 50K miles. I call it…. Part of the ownership experience. Can’t wait for it to be perfect. Then, I’ll sell it.
The cashmere interior really popped for me. 🎉
Keep the wheel lose the script 👍🏼. I liked the Duck tail but I understand wanting it to be period correct.
The Cup2 wheels for sure!!!
On the fence with the decal. It's not offensive...
I’m with you. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I only like it or am wanting to delete it. Once it’s off, though, it’s off. And I don’t want to deal with replacing it if I think the car needs it for aesthetics. Decisions decisions….
@@Rennthusiast it does give it a little something. Full white can look a little bland
Cup 2 look better. Ditch the Carrera.
LOVE the MY 02's..........................
did not realize you sold the silver 993 which I thought was overall in better shape but I can understand why you picked up the white one. I have an almost identical mileage 96 C2 guards red except with the turbo front bumper which I think looks better. As for the wheels, leave the MY02s, with stance you have now they make the car much better than the 17" CUP 2s. As for the letters, I say get rid of them, I think without them the car will look even cleaner (no pun intended). I think the letters detract from the lines of the car too much.
I have the same grinding noise on the rear spoiler, need to change the bearing too.. learn something everyday about these cars.
As for cost, I bough mine 2 years ago and spent about $10k as well but that included a new windshield since my car some bubbling below the windshield which you know these cars are known for due to the crappy rubber seal that goes on top. That also included the turbo front bumper from Suncoast. Give us an update on what you decide to do with the wheels and letters.
The consensus, which I heartily join, seems to be Cup Wheels + script delete. For me, the wheels are easy. Cups are brilliant and are a vastly better fit and look for the car than the MY02's. I'm a little more equivocal about the script. While I agree with others that it adds visual interest and that unadorned white can be a bit color-monolithic, I'd ditch it. When I first saw it, I thought it looked cool but after a few minutes I felt it was just a hair tacky and - mostly - not period correct and original. Since everything else is original (brilliant interior, you removed duck tail and splitter, etc.), the script is now out of place. FWIW, I liked the look the previous owner attained with the aforementioned items (duck tail, etc.) and the script because it all worked well together. You've gone in a different direction and should finish the job IMO. So, there's your answer, Will. Cup and no script!
Very nice. The wheels look too modern for the car IMO.
The script may not be era appropriate but the swath of color brakes up the overpowering amount of white paint.
Most cars do not look good in white unless there is the appropriate amount of contrast (older G bodies look good in white because of all of the black accents, bumpers etc).
Look better with the original wheels.
Cup 2s, done.
The only wheels that look better than MY02 are the BBS E88 IMO. Script is cool and I’d leave it on there. What about Recaro seats again?
I could go broke buying and reupholstering seats 😂😂😂
I think I’ll leave them factory for now as I don’t want to get into the interior even if the seats would be reversible.
I would but the original wheels back on
totally put the original wheels back on. and get rid of the Carrera sticker.
Don't usually like graphics on a 911.but this one works in the silver. So leave on for me.
Cup II for sure
great interior, specially on white....and when are you gonna 'visit a car'.....?
I would have kept the ducktail and the splitters I love the wheels I usually don't like decals but I think it looks good on this car. I had a 75 Carrera Targa with the decal and I thought it looked good on the car. ...very rare car by the way that I wish I still had. I will say that the 993 looks great even in its most naked form
It needs Cup 2 wheels with the Carrera script deleted for Porsche perfection.
Any prospective 993 owner needs to be aware that these mods (for the most part) improve the car's life significantly. Are they *needed* tho? Absolutely not. You could get a running car and address any issues as they arise and not do preventive work that costs a pretty penny. Will, if I were you, I'd swap out the broken spoiler wall myself. Takes 20min if you take your merry time.
Yeah, I was thinking I’ll just grab the part and do it myself. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙏🏽
keep those wheels for sure
Beautiful car but that dovetail made the car look more agressive and a bit more appealing mate. However I do understand your wishes. I've had a few in my day.
I hear you…I like a ducktail but mainly on the 3.2. That’s more correct.
I prefer originality so if that is your goal I would lose the decals and put the original wheels back on it.
Great video, as always!! Decals and wheels look great on this car, especially given the color combo, but I would definitely go back to the original cup wheels and take the decals off. I played around with the various usual suspect wheels on my 993, but in the end the original cup wheels look great, are really light, and provide a great comfort/performance balance for road use. The cups also look way better (size-wise, in proportion to the car) now that you’ve lowered the car.
Oh and your analysis of costs involved in getting the car in the right shape, is bizarrely in line with what I had to spend on mine here in the Netherlands to get it all right (also a well maintained original starting point)
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Can you tell us what you paid for this car? Or what's a fair price for a car that has 96k miles and still needed 7k of work. TIA
Out of respect for the sellers I deal with, I don’t share prices I pay for the cars I buy. Here’s a tool for you to use to check out fair market pricing. www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/993/carrera/coupe-manual/year-1995?interval=1y
At first I hated the Carrera sticker. It's grown on me. I vote keep it. No on the cup wheels.
I've never seen a DOT sticker put on a car after a repair. How does that work?
I think maybe it’s put on before the part is installed, but I’m not 100% sure.
Like a DOT approved part for safety or impact purposes? Perhaps for accident safety but I don’t know.
What’s the best budget friendly Porsche for first time owners? A 996?
Yes. Here’s a video I did on the 996: ua-cam.com/video/UIZbqGzrhiA/v-deo.htmlsi=Z1AVCSe5az8np56O
@@Rennthusiast awesome thank you!
Had a 996 and always wanted a 993…
If the ducktail went ... the sticker has to go as well!
Delete Carrera on side. I like the newer wheels but I also think maybe go back to original wheels.
Keep the decal. Keep the new wheels.
Needs ltw fuchs
Original is for museum pieces. Sticker and cup wheels make it look playful.
Delete the sticker and add a shark fin sticker.
Delete the carrera sticker and toss some cup ones one it. Or some RH speedline
Already swapped to the cup 1’s since this video. So torn on the Carrera decal.
Original wheels look better imo
delete the sticker or get a black, not grey, one. i prefer without duck tail too. with it, it is pretending to be something else, like an RS American. i like the orig wheels too.
Thanks for the feedback.
HATE the cup II's....................................................
Don't like the Carrera sticker.
I vote keep the wheels and delete the decal
loose the decal
911 T 🎉
Cup wheels and remove the sticker mate.
At 10:55 always gotta carry what relay & belt? (My 993 is a 97' C2, Speed Yellow) Thank you!
DME relay and a fan belt.
Did i miss the buy price?
No, I never share purchase price on the channel, or rarely do.
you should if you're going to talk about price of ownership for a 993. If you're saying you spent 7k on recent repairs on your car, its good to understand what the car cost is so you get a % of the overall spend. Considering you talk alot about the cars you buy/sell here and people can see the prices you ask for when you are selling the cars - cause they are on public forums - don't really get the privacy act of not talking about the price of the car. You're a youtuber saying you want subscribers to know the cost of owning a 993? Not speaking of the price doesn't give a full picture. @@Rennthusiast
@@porschesportscar thank you for the feedback and advice. I will keep it in mind for the future.
Every deal between buyer and seller is different. I may get a better deal or a worse deal than someone else depending on many variables.
Here’s a great tool for anyone interested in understanding pricing of 911’s and in this case, 993’s specifically. www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/993/carrera/
Delete the decal and maybe Rs wheels from 993
No sticker...😂
Scratch/burn/delete that decal, too chezzy
Swap the wheels and call it good
+1 for Original Wheels, remove the script!
Please put the original wheels back on. The current ones do not fit the car, they are cheap looking.. As far as the Carrera decal,it contrasts the car just a little. If you remove it your car will be all white, eeww. Keep the decal.
Lose the script and go with the cup wheels.
go back to OEM. lose the strip and wheels.
leave the wheels lose the script.
Yeah lose the sticker.
Iwill pay you to dump those wheels.
If you worry about how much it will cost to have a car, you can't have one
NEVER TAKE OFF A DUCK TAIL!!!!
