To be honest I like the cartoony aesthetic for the characters. With the exagerated graffitti effects, it gives the game a charm that many racing games don't even try to get (closest would be Forza Horizon and even then it leaves the charm to the festival part)
realism is fucking boring why would you want realism in fiction, something that is meant to push boundaries of what is possible? just go outside
