You also get much more flow in the channels by using a scratched surface (about 60-80grit or less) because there is created turbulense in every scratch which is working as an "lubricant" for the fuel air mixture.. Also when using "too large" valves, you get to close to the cylinder wall. That hinders flow ALOT!! Topplocksverkstan has some fun literature about this on their site, they also keep the steel rings in the heads and b18-b20 etc (b18 is a much better cylhead to work with when tuning, because of the positioning of the intake valve!)
Yup, exactly! I remember reading up on their website, quite a few years ago. And if you think about it, the gap on the outside of the valve is a real factor. Personally, I think this, plus the valve seats, are where you can really make a difference when you are looking for added power.
@@ClassicCarRacingRestoration yes! I just build an b20 and a b230 with their heads. D cam and k cam in. Running double SUs, 2 1/2" exhaust, they run GREAT!!! Full power from idle to 6000 rpms 😎💥
Thank you! Loved this series. I didn't see the final video you mentioned of his drive back. Is that available? I miss my 1968 P1800S. I had it for three years, maybe four, but sold it when I left the U.S. for two years, not wanting to burden my parents with storing it for me. I do sometimes regret that decision. Alex
Great vid! Not that I ever think I'm going to get my hands this dirty, but it's nice to see someone knowledgable take things apart and explain what's going on! A question? I own a 1971 1800E myself - had it completely restored, nuts and bolts. Wonderful machine! However, the idle speed is very high, around 1600 rpm, and the mileage is pretty poor, only about 6 km/l. The seller has taken it back to fix it, claiming it's a faulty cold start system. He's replacing it with a 1972 system which he claims is much more reliable and less prone to failure. What's your best guess? Is he right? Or is the problem more likely to be found elsewhere...?
It's really har do say with those old Bosch systems! Sounds like it could be a combination of problems: maybe sucking air at a leak, and possibly faulty injectors - has the car been sitting long periods of time?
@@ClassicCarRacingRestoration No, it was only finished this summer, mid july, and I've clocked 1100 miles since then. It's now at the workshop/seller for a change of cold start system and winter storage, so won't see it again until April. Hopefully they'll sort it out by then, but I thought I'd ask around anyway...
Do you know the oil pressure at idle with hot engine? And what oil? My engine only has 0.5-1 bar at idle, but 4-5 bar at cruising, i fear maybe the ball and spring has gotten stuck.
I love your videos ! Just bought a Volvo 142 myself with a b20 with twin weber’s🥰 it makes 145.4hk@5995/197.9Nm@4696rpm☺️ motor hp ! K- cam supposedly ported and shaved head☺️ just wondering .. is there a more modern camshaft that would out perform The stock K-cam from Volvo ! Best regards Stian
Yup, that sorta comes natural here - especially when using a cam with radical lift/lobe profiles. I have tried using hydraulic lifters, and sure, it's a bit less noisy, but they are heavier. As long as I use iquality parts/race oil, solid lifters works fine for me
Get it to 10 oil pump shafts. Did you paint the engine after you had assembled it . Looking good . Thought at first you you where leaving it unpainted.
Hej!
Would Your King not have gotten the last version of a proper, social-democratic thus modest four cylinder P1800 for free, he might have wanted a real sportscar like an inline six cylinder BMW Coupe, a V6 Citroën SM or even a V8 Montreal, was it not for a V12 Jag XKE .... To prevent that and to ensure the Swedish king is seen with Swedish product, a free P1800 directly from Volvo every other year was justified I reckon. Today in "Geely" times, that proud automobile nationalism is obsolet, of course, as we all get basically the same boring, accountant-, austerity-. and marketing-driven, "badge-engineered" chinesium-crap only. Thanks for sharing!
You make a very strong case, and a very solid point here! Looking at it from this perspective, I suddenly feel glad he got those cars for free. If Volvo was Swedish again, I'd like to se him rip around in a new version of the P1800. That'd be kinda cool!
@@ClassicCarRacingRestoration I worked as a chauffeur for Bavarian politicians during two campaigns in 2008/2009. They were leading figures, but opposition. To avoid them being "delivered" under the eyes of broadcasting cameras with a Kia or something even more ridiculous, they all got either a BMW or an Audi to ensure Bavarian cars being pictured in television only. When I had to bring in one of the cars for a technical issue, I asked one of the leading marketers of that program whether they knew about the marketing results of this procedure and the answer was: "we would not do that for opposition politicians standing not the slightest chance to conquer power here, was it not absolutely justified by the marketing research results we acquire to warrant our budget decisions". So, I'm pretty sure they knew exactly what they did back then, and also with the "humble domestic 4 cyl. Volvo" in a very social-democratic Sweden prospering under Keynesian taxation and luxury-averting welfare back then. Edit: The P1800 was, by the way, a bloody cool, very sporty car, comparable with Fiat Coupés, Alfa, Lancia and the smaller Zagatos and Abarths. Not a competition for the SM, but absolutely for an 6 cyl XKE even, while waay more economic because of the legendary Swedish build quality. I liked the futuristic "golf-club-transporter" ES even more. Was an early adopter for the first BMW 2002 Touring, too, though.
Oljan kommer in via hålen i axeln!

the 1800 series is a masterpiece of practical design, engineering and production all in a very practical and affordable car.
Affordable??...
I would have to agree Jacques! A truly beautiful design, and compared to similar European sports cars of the same age - it is affordable. And durable!
Thanks for another great educational video Billy!
Thanks a lot!!

Maybe The cam used in this engine.. Since i dont have info regarding valve size.. i’ll just go with The fact that its stock☺️
