So I’ve run into that Honda auto choke sticking shut issue a number of times on Toro mowers and I’ve finally found the cause. When the two bolts that hold that miserable gasket / spacer sandwich together get over torqued (as in with an impact driver) it squishes the gaskets together and warps the plastic air box which interferes with the choke linkage and holds it shut. If, while it is misbehaving, you back out on the carb nuts ever so slightly you will hear a distinct “click” as the choke plate snaps open and the carb functions properly. Look at the back of the air box, you will see the carved out section that is barely deep enough to clear the choke linkage on top of the carb; that is what’s hanging up the choke and making it stick shut. When the thermowax unit goes bad the choke fails OPEN, not shut. Double up on the gaskets between the air box and the carb inlet and don’t over torque the nuts, it should work fine. I’ve had repeatable test results with this theory, tightening the nuts to where they were caused the choke to stick every time, backing off on them caused the choke to snap into action every time.

@@BrucesShop you’re very welcome Bruce, and thank you for taking the time to make these great videos! I have to say though, I’m not a fan of Honda’s over-engineered auto choke system. It’s very problematic and unnecessarily complicated IMO. I like their auto-return choke that you set and simply opens slowly when the handle bail is pulled down. Very reliable and super easy to fix if it has a problem!

Thanks for posting this. I've been guilty of using the impact driver, and before that, drill drivers with a clutch, for decades. I never had any issues until I started working on Hondas. I bet that's the reason. Have a great weekend.

How's she goin'? It may well have been a bad carb from the factory, but that plug was definitely not right. The original wax pin seemed to be working but after you removed it, it looked like it was glued in place and if this is not normal that means someone was in there before and they may have mis-positioned it and caused this issue. You also found the dampening spring was not connected correctly and could have been affecting the choke. All-in-all Bruice, I'd say you fixed the problem but to say exactly what the problem was may be difficult eh!! LOL This was an interesting one and I'm glad you took us through it step by step! Take care!!

Now that was a good video Bruce and should generate a lot of attention. Yep grounding out check out Kens small engine last video sweet plug tester which i may talk to Jake about buying. Dont you hate those wax choke mechanisms Honda came up with? We only have had one and same problem on getting it out yet DonyBoy 73 seems not to have an issue, maybe they were not tarring them in then? Amazing that a factory carb from Honda had an issue but guess it can happen, seems like they are having issues with their newer equipment.

Would much rather watch you than Steven Spielburger! Nothing crazy about this, the type of challenges we have all been through. So something was misaligned with the carburetor and the choke linkage? I dunno, pretty tough to beat an old school/simple/rugged Briggs 92502. Guess I'm just stuck in the past, oh well. I know how good it feels to finally conquer a demon like this one.
