Great video! I wish there was a lot more out there like this about bird language/behavior. They are so different from any other pets, the first few days i had my bird i had no idea if he was upset or happy!

Thought about buying a Green Cheek Conure because they are not suppose to be as loud as other Conures? These comments suggest otherwise from long term owners. Great video! Saved me $500
I am so glad that this video helped you decide not buy a Green Cheek. The reality is that the noise is only the beginning of the annoying things you would have to put up with for the 30 years of the bird’s life. They poop everywhere, they fling their food, they need to be with you constantly, they are nippy, they can be bullies, they are extremely intelligent and good manipulators, they often only have a few people they allow to handle them, they need fresh food and water every day, they need to be out of the cage most of all of the day, their vet bills are at least $300/year, you have to find someone to care for them when you go out of town, they get frisky and hormonal the list goes on..😂 Don’t get me wrong I love my green cheek he is a loving and devoted little friend. With all these frustrating behaviors, he’s just doing what he was designed to do, who he was meant to be in the wild. the reality is that they are meant to be in a Forrest, in a flock with a life partner, hatching chicks each year and the discrepancy between the life they are meant to have and what you can offer in a home in a city is always present for you and the bird. If people were as thoughtful about getting a bird as you have been we could eliminate or reduce the Parrot trade and find homes for the ones who have been given up by their owners. Thank you for being thoughtful and looking into this huge commitment, before just jumping in.
Thank you so much!! I was trying to figure out what my bird was doing because when I came home and let him out of his cage he got really puffy was really active and bit a little and I see it mean he excited lol I’m so happy to know he’s excited to always see me Time Stamp: (for me) 0:20 0:33
University_Koala Girl - oh yeah! 😂 He’s just super excited to see you. Possibly over-excited. If you can imagine how quiet and isolated he is during the day when you are gone. Then to suddenly, unexpectedly have you home and making noise and picking him up. It’s a big transition, which is why some people get bit I think. Sometimes I have to let my bird come down from that super puffy feeling a bit before I pick him up to say hello.
I have a GC and he sounds completely different! The only thing that sounds the same is maybe his biting noise? The gravely skirp skirp noise he does when he is defending his perch. Otherwise, totally different! Even his alarm call is different. He does have many of the same behaviors. but he usually preens when he's nervous. He used to be an over-preener and lost a lot of his chest feathers because he'd preen until they basically fell apart. But he got over that after we gave him some different perches high up in the house and allowed his wings to grow out, so now he's much happier.
JustAnotherPerson - thank you! That’s awesome! Congratulations! Please link any videos you get of your new baby. I have a few other videos on bathing your bird, Conure hormonal behavior and how to make a DIY bird carrier backpack that might be helpful too. 😊
@@GuidetoGreenCheekConures Ok. I'm getting a baby one, and I'll definitely link videos or put some on my own channel! This video was super helpful. I think you just gained a subscriber.
Jemy Vermeulen same!!! today I just discovered if I move my hand around like a snake in like an infinity motion she rolls and stretches her neck around side to side. Lol
just got a yellow sided and pineapple conure recently and they're slowly starting to open up to us more and act less cautious around us. they do a lot of the "dont leave" wailing chirps and preening.
Haha so cute. I love these birds. If mine puffs her head feathers up and backs lightly you can bet she is mad lol. But luckily that is not very often. One noise that I did not see here was what I’m guessing is a mating noise? At first I though she was very agitated. But when I would scratch her neck and back she LOVED it and was making that same sound..... lol she’s my baby.
You are right on the money with every single one!! I appreciate people putting these accurate bits out there !! I have two conures that are the loves of my life!!!! They own me lol ❤️
Sandra Morrow they are 6 months apart in age almost exactly and we adopted separately. Our first One Chomps is very jealous still, of Stomps,he would of been quite happy being an only child lol. We call them frienimes lol because they will preen each other and can be out with each other but only with supervision because they will fight ! We wish they would have a better relationship though , that’s the dream anyways lol!! You never know , it’s a gamble unless they were already together ya know!! But they each love on us and me and my husband love on each one separately and together too!!
The reviewing Shark - Oh so good to hear. Your bird is lucky to have an owner who cares enough to investigate how he is feeling and what he is trying to say. Enjoy your little friend.
John Paull - ah yes, the vacuum or the Roomba gets them every time. Mine seems to be agitated by most cleaning activities which is ironic since he is often the one I am cleaning up after 😂 Silly bird. 🦜💕
Izumi Isiwata - Awwww 🥰 I bet. Green Cheeks have a way of demanding to be spoiled. Once you know them and they know you, there is little room to misunderstand what they want or are trying to tell you. 😋 Take care of those little ones! You’ll have a full flock soon!
Super video! Just acquired my daughter's green cheek and I am accustomed to my Macaw. Her and I get along really well, just wanted have a better understanding of her vocals.
My green-cheek conure used to do this weird exciting movement when I came back from school: he started to walk back and forth on the couch and his tail was extended (like a peacock's tail) and screamed/chirped happily (kinda like the first thing that was mentioned at the start of the vid) I miss the little guy :")
What made me want a green cheek and start researching is seeing one in a pet store. I don't know why, but this one me and my friend saw was licking us through the cage. Not biting, but licking
When the conure made a distress call, both of my conures recognized it and panicked. They flew all over the room and then walked back to me to make sure everything is all right
my conure is really strange. he doesn't want to go out of his cage, despite me opening his door for like 20 minutes at a time and he is always just kinda relaxing
NikTheGamer YT - is your Conure pretty new? It may take some time to feel safe to come out. Conures definitely like to have a territory that they feel is their own and they feel safe in. If there is a lot going on outside of his cage or a lot of large windows nearby he may also feel safer there. Also conures need 12 hours of sleep a night so if he gets woken up after 6 or 8 hours when the people in your house get up he is going to want to go back to his cage and have a few long naps throughout the day to try to catch up. When I am home all weekend my bird demands to be put in a dark safe spot to have a nap a couple times a day. You may also be seeing this behavior. Just some ideas as to what it could be. They all have such different personalities and different living situations it’s always hard to know for sure why an individual bird behaves a certain way. You can always tempt him out of his cage by placing his favorite treat just outside the cage 😉
BICARB AND VINEGAR SPRINKLE AND SPRAY LEAVE ON OVERNIGHT AND THEN ANOTHER SPRAY IN THE MORNING... NATURAL OVEN CLEANER. WORKS WELL. LOVE THIS LITTLE BIRD AND HER MUM AND ALL THE HELPFUL INFO HERE. THANKS.
every time I enter the room my green cheek conure gets really excited and starts to bounce up and down. And whenever I take here out she does it on my hand and sometimes really violently😂😂
Great informative video. Would love to see a plant tour video as i see you have some lovely plants. Lighting info on plants and how does your birdie do with plants. Does he like to chew on them?
Shirley Bullick - wow! Thank you for saying this! I have actually been thinking about doing a plant tour recently, but wasn’t sure if I would have any interest from this audience. It’s good to know that there would be. Actually now I have over 100 different cultivars of plants in my home with most of them being succulents, cactus and tropicals, so I really do have quite the tour to give. I was thinking of including my bird somehow, that’s a good idea. Thank you!
R candy - Awwwww 🥰 I would love to hear. If you have a video please send a link. Marco makes some cute and funny noises when he is in his bed and really tired. It’s a jumbled mess of all the words and sounds he knows. Kind of like sleep talking. 😂
My green cheek’s cage is near the slow-closing kitchen trash can. He is fascinated by the trash can and climbs down his cage to get as close to it as possible to observe it every time the trash can lid is closing. Also, he has a couple of stuffed toys on top of his cage that he normally likes to snuggle up to, but if you come near his cage to use the trash can, he will play-fight with his stuffed buddies. I think he considers the trash can his property. 🧐
Yes! He has definitely included the trash can into his territory and he is showing others what he will do to them if the get to near when he goes after his stuffed buddies. Conures are little feathered macho guys.
Mine will make a whimpering sound when it sees a large predatory bird in the distance. They have great eyes, I will hear it make that noise and look out the window, sometimes barely seeing it because it so far away. Snuggle time is communicated by him positioning his head under my chin, if I don't hold him then he bites me or will fly to his cage and pouts.
AMAZING video.... so grateful for having found this content BUT, if your GCC is anything like mine, be super careful what you let him/her watch.... They learn absurdly fast and mine actually picked up the more negative behaviors from this video watching it. Well, i guess he didn't learn the behavior, but rather learned the sounds associated with them. I dont let my guy watch anything that i dont want him mimic... Example: annoying sun conure videos. because after letting him do so i had a sun conure for that day (until he forgot) crazy loud and obnoxious. Search a GCC video titled "screaming". My bird never made those sounds until watching just 20 seconds of the video... #evilinfluence
Church Watkins IV - wow! I that’s a good point. They do learn very quickly. Mine joins in a the din when all The dogs in the neighborhood are barking. 😋 You probably know this, but Any behaviors you don’t want, just ignore him when he does it. A response From you positivity reinforces the behavior and he will increase its repetition. I actually put on videos of song birds when I am out. He doesn’t copy them but the sounds and movements Of other birds doing their thing seems to relax him. He feels the safety in numbers thing.
@@GuidetoGreenCheekConures yeah 😊 I totally do the same.... he gets spoiled lol... every morning he'll get upset if I dont put on his playlist... that's the trouble though! most the time with the irritating/annoying stuff he's not even directing it towards me! he can sit their after watching one of his favorite videos and literally paraphrase the whole thing.... even mimicking the movements the birds are making... like hes putting on a play for himself *facepalm* 😜... my mother was visiting the other day and watched him doing it and her jaw dropped.... so smart these birds are.
Omg my green cheeked acts the same way minus the flying bounce. He doesn’t fly unless he NEEDS to. He runs and climbs everywhere instead. When he did the head bounce, sometimes really really fast, it’s when he wants something he can’t have
Standing With The Band - yes I agree. Since originally making this video, I have decided the head bounce is a begging behavior. Which of course can also precede flying if Said begged for item is not promptly provided. 😋
Birdie Chan - wow, mind only makes the distress call when he is terrified. He does do some screaming “don’t leave me call” in the video, to get attention, call to me or others if we are out of sight, tell me if he wants help out of a bind, call to other birds, or violently request something that he wants. This is definitely learned behavior. He has learned to scream because we respond to it. Ug! Make sure your bird isn’t reacting to something scary in the environment- balls, balloons, brooms, vacuum cleaners, remote control cars, roombas, loud noises or novel objects. If so, then keep those objects away from him the best you can. If he is truly doing for attention the best way to train him to not make that noise is to ignore him when he makes it and pay attention to him and reward him when he is quiet. Good luck!
My conure does the cutest thing every morning. I keep her cage in my room, so she can tell when I’m awake. The second she sees that I’m up, she screeches a few times and runs to the door of her cage. Then she picks up the toy hanging on the door and drops it down so that it makes noise. If I take that toy off, she finds a bell and rings it until I get up and get her. She will also get agitated if I don’t go get her first thing in the morning. She’s the cutest :)
I have a male GCC. I was told only the males learn how to talk. Omar's Exotic Birds in Santa Monica is a good place to purchase a bird if you're in the LA area.
@@petloveraj6284 he talks a lot so likely a male. Also, you can tell by gently feeling the breast bone until bone formation splits (or not). In a female GCC, the hip bones will be wider and rounder in order to pass eggs through their vent. In the males, the breast bone will be closer together and "sharper."
I wish I would have listened to my bird when it gave me that distress call. I lost my little conure two weeks ago, and I know there was probably nothing I could do once he got tangled in my hair... But I would like to think that if I had become alarmed and reacted faster that way that I might have been able to save him. That thought hurts. So I don't know why I have it. But I do. I honestly have no clue why I didn't panic when I realized he was trying to move away from me and was struggling. I wish my brain wouldn't have been so slow to catch on. Nothing I can really do about it now, though... I just really hope I don't ever have to hear that sound again. On a brighter note, you're right about the cuddles and scritches. They really do love them X3
Thx!This was awesome. I recognisexall the calls from my own GCC but wadn't quite sure of the meaning if them all. That don't leave me one is whaf she does when I civer her cage at night.....but she soon settles.🐦

Mine is fine with the toothbrush she just hates toilet paper and my mouse. (the keyboard one not a real one)
I think the mouse because it always moves and she always, always wants my hands holding and petting her but I don't get the toilet paper one.
Lunar Games mine loves to shred toilet paper. Not out of anger or anything, just sheer enjoyment😊
Lunar Games mine loves to shred toilet paper. Not out of anger or anything, just sheer enjoyment😊
try vaccuming the bird is louder than the vaccum.
Great video! I wish there was a lot more out there like this about bird language/behavior. They are so different from any other pets, the first few days i had my bird i had no idea if he was upset or happy!
I work at Petco and interact with the green cheek conures all the time. This is so accurate! Love it
That cry at 1:43... I just melt whenever I hear that.
Omg I know the “don’t leave me” call 😂 I get that all the time 😂
I call it her "calling her flock back"
This was super helpful! I recently bought my first green cheek and these irritated behavior signs will help me avoid many bites in the future. hes a very sweet boy but sometimes he gets upset out of nowhere it seems
Mine doesn't like to be touched at all..Though she would happily sit on my shoulder, preen sometimes and do step ups...also she pukes every time she sits in a car..her vet says she is unable to process the motion...lol...she is my life..by bundle of joy...
Neno, my GCC actually purrs like a cat when he is snuggled up against me.
I was trying to figure out what my bird was doing because when I came home and let him out of his cage he got really puffy was really active and bit a little and I see it mean he excited lol I’m so happy to know he’s excited to always see me
Time Stamp: (for me)
0:20
0:33
University_Koala Girl - oh yeah! 😂 He’s just super excited to see you. Possibly over-excited. If you can imagine how quiet and isolated he is during the day when you are gone. Then to suddenly, unexpectedly have you home and making noise and picking him up. It’s a big transition, which is why some people get bit I think. Sometimes I have to let my bird come down from that super puffy feeling a bit before I pick him up to say hello.
@Guide to Green Cheek Conures Yea he mainly does it when I come back from school
This video has really helped me under stand the behaviour of my green cheek conure
This is helpful! I'm about to get a Green cheeked Conure, and I'm super excited
Thank you so much! I’m getting a GCC and this just makes me even more excited.😊
The moment I sit on a couch
My bird knows that I'm get something to eat so she
*FLYS AT ME AND FORCES ME TO GIVE HER FOOD* 😂
simply_sana - Yes, that would be a green Cheek Conure you are describing! 😋
Mine just starts screaming as soon I get something to eat. Then he tries to take a bite out of my food whenever I try to bite it.
omg this video is great! My little Green Cheek always makes the crunching noise while sitting on my shoulder when i do homework :D
Eda - Awwww 🥰 I love the little relaxed crunchies. Thanks for watching! Check out my other videos if you haven’t.
mine slow bounces, a bit faster though. she only does it when we do or when she hears music/us talking! she loves dancing
Mine does the same, we even made a little game out of it, were we mimic eachother, if i change the pace, so does my birdie 😁
Jemy Vermeulen same!!! today I just discovered if I move my hand around like a snake in like an infinity motion she rolls and stretches her neck around side to side. Lol
@@KenzieJordyn do you think it's because the bird is distressed or upset though? I worry my music may be too loud for my GCC!
for mine I know it’s not that, we don’t even play music. she just dances or moves when she sees us do it
Some birbs dance to music so don't be too worried, unless they act really out of character then I would worry about your birbs
This is amazing! My family and I are looking into adopting a little green cheek, so this was very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing!
just got a yellow sided and pineapple conure recently and they're slowly starting to open up to us more and act less cautious around us. they do a lot of the "dont leave" wailing chirps and preening.
But they each love on us and me and my husband love on each one separately and together too!!
so cute. :) i'm looking to get a green cheek conure soon, so this video was very helpful
I have silkie chickens and they remind me a lot of this video! I'm getting a GCC soon, I'm glad they are pretty familiar.
This makes it so I know what my bird feels like thank you so much 😊
The reviewing Shark - Oh so good to hear. Your bird is lucky to have an owner who cares enough to investigate how he is feeling and what he is trying to say. Enjoy your little friend.
I don't even have a green cheaked conure 😂😂
neither do I have a sun conure

tysm for this i thought my bird was plucking its feathers but really it was preening and it felt safe ty!!
narumi - oh good! Glad we could help. 😊
I'm happy to know that they are only agitated/stressed when I vacuum. The only thing I ever get from mine are little nibbles
When I try to calm them down after, that is.
John Paull - ah yes, the vacuum or the Roomba gets them every time. Mine seems to be agitated by most cleaning activities which is ironic since he is often the one I am cleaning up after 😂 Silly bird. 🦜💕
Thank you for this video! My bird was being defensive because my cousins came over. I kinda thought he was just about to fly.
LiamKing リアムキング - Awesome! Glad the video was helpful. Check out my other videos and thanks for watching! 🦜
I tell you my babies are the most pampered and happiest little things in the world🥺 they are having babies soon!
Izumi Isiwata - Awwww 🥰 I bet. Green Cheeks have a way of demanding to be spoiled. Once you know them and they know you, there is little room to misunderstand what they want or are trying to tell you. 😋
Take care of those little ones! You’ll have a full flock soon!
when my bird bounces her head in a U shape she usually likes what she's eating or is happy
Super video! Just acquired my daughter's green cheek and I am accustomed to my Macaw. Her and I get along really well, just wanted have a better understanding of her vocals.
This video is 100% accurate. Great Video!
TorqueMachine - Wow thanks! Gold star ⭐️ for me. 😋
Thank you for making this video. Super helpful. Now you need to do a do's and don't video. I've had Kitty for 2 years and I'm still learning.
Just got my conure and this video helped alot
This is a very good and accurate guide
Kizerrain - thank you! I am working on another one that includes more behavior. 😊
My green-cheek conure used to do this weird exciting movement when I came back from school: he started to walk back and forth on the couch and his tail was extended (like a peacock's tail) and screamed/chirped happily (kinda like the first thing that was mentioned at the start of the vid)
I miss the little guy :")
Maybe when you have your home you could get a rescue bird. With your young age and previous experience I bet you'd make a awesome bird mommy.
What made me want a green cheek and start researching is seeing one in a pet store. I don't know why, but this one me and my friend saw was licking us through the cage. Not biting, but licking
Ava Claire - Ha! They are so friendly and interactive.
Yep, that's pretty much all spot-on.
The little chirp around 1:45 made me so sad...
I wouldn't want to leave her/him, either.
When the conure made a distress call, both of my conures recognized it and panicked. They flew all over the room and then walked back to me to make sure everything is all right
Spot on accurate. Well done.
Travis Kraft - Thanks! I plan to do a more comprehensive one in the future. 🤓
my conure is really strange. he doesn't want to go out of his cage, despite me opening his door for like 20 minutes at a time and he is always just kinda relaxing
Whenever my bird flattens out like that and points, we called it "pancake" I just wanted to share that :)
Haha! We call it “being pointy” as in “stop being pointy bird, just fly there.”
I have a green cheek named Pluto; he’s a riot and always up to no good, but I love him
Thank you so much now I know why my bird dose this!
Katie No - Oh awesome! Glad to hear that. What was the behavior you were unsure about?
My conure doesn’t make ANY of these noises. It’s mainly a “CHI-CHOO” noise when it comes to every emotion 😂 she’s such a baby
zombiefirefox - Awwww yes, she does sound like a baby. 🥰
BICARB AND VINEGAR SPRINKLE AND SPRAY LEAVE ON OVERNIGHT AND THEN ANOTHER SPRAY IN THE MORNING...

AND ALL THE HELPFUL INFO HERE.
THANKS.
It's been a couple of years I have been watching your birdy's video to understand Pepper who enterted in our family.
Aw my sweet green cheek used to do all of these, especially the goodbye call when i would leave the room :(( i miss him, he passed a year ago.
i got my green cheek conure yesterday and i can tell he is already calm and relaxed
A great video very informative
every time I enter the room my green cheek conure gets really excited and starts to bounce up and down. And whenever I take here out she does it on my hand and sometimes really violently😂😂
Ania Lina -HA! Yeah, she is begging to be with you. The bouncing is a begging motion.
Guide to Green Cheek Conures awhhhhh😂😭😭💗
Thank you so much! This helped me so much.
My bird does the water dance when ever I throw something. LOL!
Lps Taylor - Oh awesome glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
@@GuidetoGreenCheekConures Can't wait to see your video. I have subscribed so I won't miss it.
2:23 my bird is called Picasso and whe call him pica when hes sleepy he makes that noises but in the tones on pica its really cute
R candy - Awwwww 🥰 I would love to hear. If you have a video please send a link. Marco makes some cute and funny noises when he is in his bed and really tired. It’s a jumbled mess of all the words and sounds he knows. Kind of like sleep talking. 😂
OMG MY GREEN CHEEK HAS THE SAME NAMe
I re watched this and just realized how cute the slow bounce looks
koala san 😂 yeah it is pretty cute, but he’s mad when he does it. It’s almost a rule that the madder a Conure gets, the cuter they become.
Guide to Green Cheek Conures its so weird lol
The distressed call got my GCC all worked up
Hermit Star - Oh yeah, the distress call will do it for many birds I think.
Conures are little feathered macho guys.
thanks, im getting a green cheek conure in like 2 weeks and i need to learn more about them
Mine will make a whimpering sound when it sees a large predatory bird in the distance. They have great eyes, I will hear it make that noise and look out the window, sometimes barely seeing it because it so far away. Snuggle time is communicated by him positioning his head under my chin, if I don't hold him then he bites me or will fly to his cage and pouts.
The one where you stated water dance is basically conures do when they are super angry.
Thank you sooo much! I have a green cheek and he does some weird things. So thanks again!
AMAZING video.... so grateful for having found this content
BUT, if your GCC is anything like mine, be super careful what you let him/her watch....
Mine joins in a the din when all
The dogs in the neighborhood are barking. 😋 You probably know this, but Any behaviors you don’t want, just ignore him when he does it. A response From you positivity reinforces the behavior and he will increase its repetition.
I actually put on videos of song birds when I am out. He doesn’t copy them but the sounds and movements
Of other birds doing their thing seems to relax him. He feels the safety in numbers thing.
@@GuidetoGreenCheekConures
yeah 😊 I totally do the same.... he gets spoiled lol... every morning he'll get upset if I dont put on his playlist... that's the trouble though! most the time with the irritating/annoying stuff he's not even directing it towards me! he can sit their after watching one of his favorite videos and literally paraphrase the whole thing.... even mimicking the movements the birds are making... like hes putting on a play for himself *facepalm* 😜... my mother was visiting the other day and watched him doing it and her jaw dropped.... so smart these birds are.
Guide to Green Cheek Conures Oh okay, awesome! My previous conure has different behaviors. It would bob it’s head from front to back like a chicken.
My bird always makes the distressed scared call but sometimes he just does that to get attention or when the TV is on or just randomly
Claire Teeter you can’t tell without dna testing. I would get it dna tested to confirm
My bird walks around the whole house every time, and climbs into bed with me
I wish I would have listened to my bird when it gave me that distress call.
Yes. Even I have Conure They are really Cute & Smart. But there is a small Story behind my Bird.
Ransi UTV - don’t keep us in suspense. What is the story behind you bird?! 😊
Thank you for this video :)
Thx!This was awesome. I recognisexall the calls from my own GCC but wadn't quite sure of the meaning if them all. That don't leave me one is whaf she does when I civer her cage at night.....but she soon settles.🐦
The dont leave me call broke my heart omg
Bubble Tea Bird - 😢 I knooooow!
