  • I only have single phase 220v power in my shop but I recently acquired this very cool old Delta/Rockwell Drill press. The original 3 phase industrial 1/2 HP motor was still with the machine so I did some digging as to how I could keep the press original and use it in my shop. That's where the VFD comes in. I'll demonstrate how I wired this machine to the VFD as well as a brief overview of the machine.

That is one sexy drill press, and the musical accompaniment is spot on!

I have a 1944 Walker Turner drill press and plan on installing LED lights in the cavity underneath the head casting. LED's are much cooler and last a whole lot longer. Nice job on the inverter 👍

Thanks for the video! I’m trying to get my 3phase delta lathe connected to a vfd. My 9wire motor low voltage setting is wye like this one. My question is about 4,5,6. After wiring L1,L2,L3, do I just leave 4,5,6 capped together inside the motor? Also if the motor has no ground would did you wire your own ground to the chassis?

Good video, thank you. I have a single phase drill press currently running on 110v but could be converted to 220. It looks like this box could be wired at 110v and work the same. Is that correct? Also, isn't there a torque differential running the press on the pulleys that provide the fastest speed? Has that been a problem for you?

Great Video I have Rockwell Delta 17-600 mechanical variable speed and want to convert to same VFD you purchased so i can slow down and reverse for tapping but also use for drilling steel. I would need to remove mechanical VS and install drive and driven pulleys. I Was wondering where you set your belt (pulleys you run your drive and driven) to get and idea of the ratio.(sizes) Also when you mentioned % of your dial movement do you know if 100% is 60hz or can unit be adjusted to increase Hz for faster speed.
    Thanks

Thanks for watching! In regards to my pulley setup I have the belt set to the upper pulleys on each. I believe the drive pulley is the largest on the top and the spindle pulley is the smallest. Regarding the hz question, no I don't believe that you can exceed 60hz but electrical engineering isn't remotely my strong suit. I have a different VFD with a digital readout, same principle 3 phase to single 220v and the highest it goes is 60hz at max speed. Hope that helps!

Would this work with 110 volt power or does it have to be 220?

You can't run a 3 phase 220v motor off 110. You need to use 220. Thanks for watching!
