    Thanks for the history of the odapeno and taste test. It is fun seeing the progression on saved seeds from year to year. Glad you got more heat and a nice flavor at least on one this year.

      Yep, I was glad that I got some heat back. I wish I could have kept more of that Jalapeno shape though. Maybe I'll get lucky in the F6 generation.

      Thanks Shirley! At this point, I hope it tastes good and keeps at least as much heat as it had this time. I bet the caterpillars are picking up now where you are. Have a great weekend!

    What a fun journey! The purple coloration is very nice on these. I have just started F5 on a lemon drop x red ghost, it's lost nearly all of it's heat along the way.

      Thanks for sharing how your F5 project is going. That's interesting that it lost most of it's heat. You would think that it would still have a decent amount. It's really hard to tell how it's going to go from one generation to the next though.

    My garden is urban, so I don't have the space for experimentation, but I enjoy watching your pepper projects! I like to plant a pepper, flowers and herbs together in colourful 7-gallon growbags. Some turn out a bit weird looking but some are really beautiful! The bees and hummingbirds love all of them, though. Peppers this year are: red bell, orange bell, Jimmy Nardello, black pearl, and lemon drop aji.

    It's been cold and rainy here in the Great Lakes. Anxious to transplant tomatoes and peppers into the ground. But it seems like tomatoes can handle cooler temps than peppers can. Have you had that experience? Forecast: Days low 60s to mid 70s, nights mid 40s to 50s. Thank you!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому +1

      They are both a little slow to start until the temps and soil warm up. Peppers are a lot slower to get going though. They like it really warm.

    Interesting, I had no idea you'd been going so many generations. I don't think I'd have the patience for continuing with a cross for that long. I gave up on my attempt to stabilize my F1 Beefmasters last year. None of the F3s worked well so I am trying several other open pollinated varieties instead.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, it does take some patience. That is one reason I started growing indoors all year too, so I wouldn't have to wait as long to see the next generation. Last year, I was worried that this project might not be worth continuing. Without the heat, it would be too similar to an Oda. Too bad you couldn't get one of your F3s worth keeping. I have a friend in Arkansas that does a lot of plant breeding, and sometimes he grows close to 30 to 50 plants from each generation. Just so he can find the one to carry forward. I just don't have room for that.

    Great taste test. The first one had a really strong red coloring. Like berry juice. They are starting to look a little strawberry-like. We always feel so behind on our projects over here. April has been a battle and May looms around the next corner. Stay safe and motivated. Thanks for the share!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Yes, I guess they are shaped a like strawberries. I would like to get some of that Jalapeno shape back, but I don't think that is going to happen at this point. We had a freeze Tuesday morning. I think we are safe from cold weather now, so it's full steam ahead....for good or bad. Hope the weather treats you right from now on!

    Thanks for sharing your breeding project with us! That sounds like a pepper I'd enjoy tasting!
    I wonder how well they would grow here in Colorado? Jalapenos and most other peppers do well here. We're Southeast of Denver at 6800 feet, USDA zone 5b. If you'd like to learn how they grow in a cooler growing zone from yours, I'd enjoy growing some here for you, and sharing the final product. If you're interested, We can talk about how to get some seeds or seedlings to Colorado.
    I'd enjoy adding some value to your project, and I'd be happy to do some breeding, with your instructions, if you'd find it helpful. Have you done much selective breeding in the project thus far, or is each generation an open pollination?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the offer, Ted! I will definitely give that some thought. I'm guessing the would do great in Colorado. I have just done a couple of attempts at actual breeding. I hope to do more in the very near future. I've been crazy busy this year. That's why I'm 3 days behind on responding to comments. I hope to get a few things like that done now that I have a little extra time for a while.

    Jim, do you already have the F6 generation of peppers started, or are the seeds from this first pepper the ones you'll propagate? I grew some wonderful-tasting peppers last year and some that had no discernable taste at all. The 3 plants (that survived) came from the same four-pack, so I'm guessing that someone did a swap at the garden center. This year I'm growing my own from seed. I hope the hail and damaging winds missed you guys this past week. Have a wonderful weekend. I'll be calling my insurance agent on Monday. ~Margie

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому +1

      Sure sorry to hear you got some damage, Margie! We've had to replace our roof a couple of times because of hail, so I know that is no fun at all. Hope it wasn't too bad. I have the F6 seeds ready to go, but I haven't planted them yet. That's strange that you had different results from a four pack. Hope the ones you start from seed work well for you! Have a great weekend!

    What peppers varieties where grown next to these? Whats the difference in the origin of these 3 peppers on the plates?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому

      The pepper that the Oda crossed with was likely a Jalapeno. I did have a Black Hungarian in the garden that year too. I don't think it was the Black Hungarian because I never noticed any darkening of the foliage, or any purple on the blooms. Like I mentioned in the video. I grew two plants....the peppers on one plate were from one plant, and the pepper on the other plate was from the other plant.

  • @adaml262
    @adaml262 2 роки тому +1

    So you just save seeds from the pepper you like and just keep planting them and so on and so forth?, can you stablize a cultivar when inbreeding? I’m thinking about crossing tomato’s and stablizing a tomato breed I’m trying to learn how to breed vegetables

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 роки тому +1

      The bees did the initial cross on this project. The f2 generation has the most variability, so choosing from that generation is probably the most important generation. After that, you just keep the ones you like, and scrap the ones you don't. After 5 or 6 generations, they become mostly stable. I would say go for it on breeding your own tomato variety.
