Worked in Campbell Barracks (HQ, USAEUR) from 62-64 and enjoyed my stay in Heidelberg. I got the opportunity to travel around Europe and make some good friends.
Was stationed there for Desert Strom and the Join Endeavor.
Never thought they would have closed it.
It was literally the BEST DUTY I ever had.
I worked there from 1969 through 1973 in the 65th DPU (later USAEUR AND 7TH Army AG). I lived in Patton Barracks first and later at Patrick Henry Village. It really saddened me when I read we were returning these properties to Germany. These were the happiest, most exciting times of my life. I met great people and got to travel extensively. Time marches on, though.
I was born and raised in Heidelberg and went to school _(IGH)_ between the Nachrichtenkaseren _(Hospital)_ and the Campbell barracks/Mark-Twain-Vilage.
I really miss the Americans GI's and our American friends. Going to the commissary and the PX store was always a highlight.
Our friends took us to the Ramstein Air Base and KMCC mall. It was really huge and cool, especially the food court. But it just wasn't the same as Heidelberg.
I really didn't understand the move _(mostly to Wiesbaden),_ since we've been the European headquarter for such a long time.
Heidelberg was just the perfect place, I think.
Most GI's preferred Heidelberg over any other US base and we had such a long established friendship over the decades.
Sure they had to close many installations, since the cold war is over but why out of all the Army bases in Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz, did they close Heidelberg/Mannheim?
@@yannick245 Probably because Wiesbaden has an airfield.
@@swampfoxIX Mannheim too and Heidelberg had helipads.

In Mannheim they actually got a prison too.
It's shown in _"The A-Team"_ movie, were they free Murdock from there.

There was some political debates about the prison. If it's also used for torture etc.
@@yannick245 Yes, I know. I worked on Campbell for 2 years and was there during the transition to the Rhein-Main area.
Was also at the 65th DPU, 3/68-9/69. Worked in the vault, among other places. Lived off post for last year or so. Had the rare opportunity to revisit in 1995, and then again with my son in 2012. Beautiful city. Some wild times.
Many memories of my time stationed in Heidelberg from 1978-81. Sad in a way that the Campell/Patton facilities were closed, but I guess that at some point it was bound to happen. But as I said in comments to other related videos, I will never forget my time in Hbg nor especially the unique people I served with there.
My dad was a supply sargeant at the Army base in Heidelberg in 1959. I was 12 years old then and my family lived in base housing. Our address was 2 B Alamo Circle. You can look that address up on Google Earth and see the 3 story apartment buildings we lived in. They are still there but every building is boarded up and there is not a single car in the parking lots. I have lots of fond memories from our stay in Heidelberg. When the Soviet Union fell, there was little need to keep America's military bases occupied. That is a part of U.S. history that is gone with the wind.
Was there '68-69, worked at 65th DPU. Loved Heidelberg.
8 years we spent in Heidelberg at Mark Twain Village.. I cannot believe they closed Campbell Barracks and all the other bases in Germany
they didnt close all the other bases in germany. for example rammstein, germersheim etc. so the us army is still present here in germany :)
I lived there when i was 6-9 yrs old.. Ill NEVER forget that land.. it was amazingly beautiful. i miss germany. I know Ill.never see it again, convicted felon, cant fly.
I work there fore years. I lived in Seckenheim. SIG.CORE.
Does anyone remember going to Suzies on payday? 😃
LOL, not Susis right before the PX.
I worked for 43 Signal Battalion from 1984-1998 as a Telephone-Operator, Operator 3 may I help you.
Worked at the Barracks for three years, HQ, ODCSPER.
I worked at the hospital three city blocks away. 130th Station Hospital in 1983-86. WOW ! I can't believe it! Does anyone know if the hospital closed too?
It did close-where Gen Patton had died.
oh yeah thank god its closed..
I went to the hospital at Heidelberg back in 1966 to have my finger sewed up
2:15 don't know why, but I wondered what happened to Rex and his wife. Both passed in 2019 in California, lived into their 90s. RIP.
I have to visiting it
Prost 🇩🇪🍻🇺🇸🌝
EUCOM moved to Stuttgart
🤣🤣
Now the rest leave!
Please explain?
Actually, we should at some point. Should have never gone over to begin with *in 1917* . But we had a pointy-headed academic as President who somehow just could not help it.
@@mangelpaaideer No one wants US troops on our grounds! We have an own army and we are in the NATO, we’re safe alone, we don’t need any occupants ,,to protect” us. Also we have a lot more peaceful diplomatic relations to China, Russia and even north Korea = no war danger with us troops here we do get an target.
@@Marco-bf4uu I'm German and NATO is nothing without the US. Also, the Bundeswehr is screwed. Without US presence, we would be defenseless...
@@yannick245 NATO could also live without the USA. USA constantly provokes war and brings us into war danger. Secondly the Bundeswehr would have to ,,aufrüsten“ if the muricans left and thirdly were never defenseless since we are in the NATO. No reason for them to be here.
