First
Arlo I love you
WHAT?
Totally fine man
It's fine man
I still have my 2017 Switch working just fine and as someone who plays exclusively docked I don't feel the need to upgrade.
On one hand it's nice that I don't have to spend upwards of 500$ (in my country) for a new Switch model just to get better performance for games... but on the other hand it would be really nice and I'd totally do the trade for a stronger Switch.
Which by this point it's probably just going to be the Switch 2 a few years from now, as in, the next Nintendo console. And I pray that it's backwards compatible with enhanced performance for base Switch games.
The only people would buy this is die hard Nintendo fans
As someone who plays exclusively handheld with my 2017 Switch. I also don't feel the need to "upgrade".
@@BillPinkNye Good point, it's really not much of an upgrade lol
Absolutely agree with you
Make your words mine... Greetings from Brasil.
Hey Arlo, I know where the 4K increased performance rumours came from: the people that knew anything other than that wouldn't generate the clicks. :)
Yes XD
I think that switch will still happen just not this year
That is likely true and the more liable sources said the hardware specs where still the same since even if you make a powerful switch the developer will more likely focus on the main switch since the bigger size of the consumer base and I'm not surprised the specs where the same a switch pro is more likely a switch 2 with likely 4K and find a way to run 4K with a reliable battery since more powerful hardware drains the battery
@@bradaloop Na, if that happens its going to be on nintendos next big console jump (wii to switch type of jump)
@@Kelpic don't think so
I'm glad I don't have to feel early adopter's remorse. My Switch is still good, and as a one-console-per-generation gamer who never plays her Switch in handheld mode, I'm not missing out.
Man, those who have the original 2017 Switch (such as me) will feel particoular when the Switch life cycle will end.
At least that's what I think... Cuz I remember looking at the original DS and 3DS when they were dying and thinking those were so cool, but not sold anymore.
It's sad that there is fundamentally no difference in performance. A nicer screen but still 720p? pass.
Same here!
As someone else who plays mostly in dock I agree with this sentiment, honestly I'm kinda relieved that I no longer feel the need to shell out $350 for a new Switch lol
@@pit2992 Particoular?
I look forward to when it comes out and we get reports confirming that, yes, joycon drift is still a thing
Yeah they already said same joy one no fixes. I honestly would have bought it if they fixed drift
@@thebatpig8424 Same. As far as hardware goes that's all I really care about
@@squiddler7731 yeah the only real hardware improvement is the screen but I have yet to really have a problem with the screen in handheld with my OG switch
They never replaced the controllers for an upgraded system
This should ONLY appeal to someone like me who doesn’t already have a switch and intend on playing mostly in handheld mode because really, for everyone else, this thing is a completely pointless buy!
Exactly. My current Switch is 15 times smaller than my TV. Why the heck would I buy a newer Switch that is simply 14 times smaller than my TV?
(Especially since both will likely drift the same.)
I think they should have just waited another year and focus on a pro model that could actually impress people.
I mean, I play mostly handheld and was thus tempted to buy a newer model switch just for the better battery life. This one has better battery than my current one, a bigger better screen and better audio. I'mma buy one and give my old one to my niece and nephew who are more likely to play primarily at home together anyway.
@@ILuvMoogles Same here. My 10-year-old and I have taken turns with our Switch for nearly 4 years now, and my 5-year-old has just started entering the mix (she loves Untitled Goose Game). They're fans of handheld though, so I'm almost tempted to get this one at some point for portable use and just leave the original in the dock until two people want to play at once.

Couldn't you just get the switch mini which is cheaper?

This seems to be just another option for someone who doesn't have a Switch and wants one to get. Not necessarily meant to be an upgrade for current Switch owners.
EXACTLY!!!!
True but I do want to upgrade if I can
True, the only reason people seem disappointed is because they were expecting a new switch with tons of new options even though nintendo didn't say anything like that. For an extra 50 dollars, this is pretty cool for people who don't already have a switch.
EXACTLY.... I don't need it I'm good with what I have
Don't lie to yourself you know it's both
OLEDs are ideal for horror, especially because it offers darker darks, which is the setting of most horror games, like metroid dread. So them trying to bundle metroid dread and an OLED switch would be a no brainer.
I see what you’re saying but that only really applies to games that get real dark. Dread might have horror aspects but from what we’ve seen it doesn’t look like it’ll be one of those games.
Oh I'm 100% sure that sometime after this and Dread hit the market, a special Dread edition will be announced.
@@SomeUA-camTraveler maybe they’ll announce it before so people who want the new switch and dread can get the special edition on launch day and people who only want dread can get it on launch day and people who only want the new switch can get it on launch day, it’s a win win everyone gets what they want on October 8th. Well except for people who wanted a “switch pro”
Hopefully Nintendo has put some things in place to prevent burn in.
I dont think dread is a horror game. Just a 2d sidescroller with some horror aspects.
Now I know what my mom says that "she's not mad, just disappointed". I get i ma, I finally get it.
It's more like she's disappointed because a friend of hers told her that you were gonna do something when you had no intention of doing it in the first place. It's not your fault, it's her friend's.
@@nujevad28 Excuses excuses.
That's why people shouldn't get their hopes up and believe in all these "Ultimate Switch Pro" rumors
You end up disapointed
@@Link-Link oh I pretty much figured that it'd be a disappointment. I just didn't think it'd be this big of a disappointment 😕.
@@nujevad28 What you don't seem to get is it isn't about the rumors. People don't want a hardware upgrade just for the hell of it, the Switch actually *needs* one, and its low performance has been bugging people since launch.
From the perspective of Nintendo handhelds this makes sense. This is like going from the GBA to the GBA SP, or the original DS to the DS Lite. It's not a big hardware upgrade, but it adds various QOL improvements. At this rate, a "pro" model of the Switch might end up just being Nintendo's next gen system instead of half step upgrade.
Even more so now that the 3ds isnt their focus.
@@quoll4961 The 3DS wasn't an upgrade to the DS, it was a completely different console, the New 3ds is more in line to what people were expecting
Wasn't the SP more like the DSi or New 3DS than this? At any rate, this late into the console's life cycle people were expecting a DSi/New 3DS type of upgrade. This is more like a 3DS XL upgrade. That's why it's disappointing.
@@boltstrike2787 No, the SP was the exact same hardware on a different form factor
Yeah the new 3ds was confusing to consumers, made development on the platform more difficult as devs now had 2 systems to make the game for, and all of its exclusive games failed to meet sales expectations. I'm kinda surprised that there isnt a spec upgrade, but it makes sense. I wasnt gonna spend hundreds of dollars to upgrade anyways even if it had 4k and stuff
As someone who bought a switch this may I’m glad mine isn’t immediately obsolete.
@@SantiagoNasrax Switch hardware was lacking when it came out. I'm sure if there wasn't a part shortage they could make it significantly better and use DLSS for upscaling. Arlo seems like he just wants to fix the framerate and hardware issues and I 100% respect that. It just isn't worth it for me since I just bought one.

This is really cool for people who use their Switch in handheld mode. It's also really disappointing for those of us who never use their Switch in handheld mode.
Except the LAN port. Thats a good thing.

Frankly I don't think it's worth it unless the person doesn't have any Nintendo Switch yet. It's just a slightly bigger, slightly nicer screen. Not enough to get a second one.
It has 64gb though
My switch is almost exclusively used in handheld
There are so many little things that would make me upgrade. The big one I can think of is Bluetooth Audio.
Bluetooth, alternative charging port to charge in handheld...
There is a lot of things to fix with switch
Hey good news in the newest update from this week all switches can do that now!
They put out an update so all Switches can hook up to bluetooth audio devices.
Find It funny that people don't know the difference between hardware update and software update... No wonder why the people where confused by the Wii U being a completly new hardware

@@projectpitchfork860 Someone doesn't know what they are talking about...
Honestly, I think at this point, the version of the Switch Pro that everybody wants with improved performance is just going to be a new video game console. Maybe it will be a sequel to the Nintendo Switch like how the 3DS and Wii U were to the DS and Wii. Maybe it will even be backwards compatible with Switch games. But I say they will just make a new console at that point with it's own line of games.

Hi Tyler!

I feel like generally this would be a revision that would come with a price drop. Problem is supply chains are so screwed up right now that it probably isn’t cheaper to make a switch today.
Also there is literally no incentive for them to lower the price. It's still selling pretty much as fast as they can produce them.
Not to mention that Nintendo doesn't subsidise their own hardware unlike their competitors. So comparatively it looks like a bad proposition compared to something like the Xbox Series S.
I'm pretty confident that a Switch console is worth no more than $170 to physically build. Nintendo has been milking old technology since the very first day. And I've been asking myself all these 4 years "Why people keep buying it? Don't they realize they're making it worse?"

As a college student now, not always having access to a tv screen, the new stand is definitely a massive selling point for me unlike the old switch, i think i could comfortably play this in handheld with my pro controller and with friends. the slightly bigger screen might be a big enough change that people would be comfortable gathering around it and playing, especially with better angles and lighting.
Ever since I got my new (normal) switch I never had the chance to hook my switch up to the T.V. because well I dont have a T.V. however I am still okay with not getting the new switch cause the size of the screen on my normal switch works just fine and the new kickstand while it is cool not enough for me to buy it because my switches current kickstand works just fine I only use it when I am playing with friends and for that it works just fine but hey I am glad this exists so people like you can enjoy it.

This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to slightly lower the switch price to $250 (or even like $280!!!) and keep the OLED at $300… just seems very pricey to me.

Super fair point. I just wish the dock wasn't a flat out downgrade.
They removed one of the USB ports for a port most users won't even use and they did this to try and fix a problem that doesn't exist.
For clarification:
_The problem being bad american wifi. . . when that isn't even the issue. Nintendo games use bad netcode that wouldn't show on an island like japan but would show in on a continent like Europe or America. This is strictly on a per-game basis, meaning you won't have this problem with Third Party online games on nintendo switch. Those games have not stupid netcode. It's specifically the way first party games are coded that's the issue. But nintendo refuses to touch their netcode. This is why you don't need an Ethernet port on your phone. Because phone games have good netcode. Good netcode is what it looks like when 1 bad apple doesn't spoil the bunch. Bad netcode is when if one person lags, and then that means everyone has to lag, no matter how good their connection is, no exceptions That's how nintendo codes their online games._
To put it blatantly, _you don't need everyone to have an ethernet connection or even amazing connection to have a good online game. You just need that game's netcode to not be made by morons. Again, you don't need ethernet._ *It's strictly on the coding side. Software side. Not hardware side.*
THAT'S why it's so annoying that we are losing a port that's actually useful >_>

And that was literally just it. The only lies was from the leakers/journalists with their clickbait articles.
I'd give it another 1-2 years past 2021 or 2022 for news of a Pro release to come and such news won't come till 2023+, but tha'ts just my prediction/theory/expectation considering the release of the Switch OLED is basically 3DS XL to the 3DS, they're trying to milk the heck out of the Switch console sales.
Hey, at least it's not called "New Switch", Arlo, it's the OL'D Switch... XD
That’s very witty lmao
Cring
I'll upgrade if I can find one in stores, if not I won't bother. I've had my Switch since launch, mainly play in handheld anyway. A nicer and larger screen will definitely be a plus for me.
My opinion is this, if they launched this as the new base-model at the same price, they'd get plenty of angry fans who just purchased a Switch and would be frustrated they didn't know a better one would be releasing soon for the same price. I'd imagine a Price-drop on both models will come along further into the Switch's lifespan, before this model completely replaces the base-model.
Finally, the Switch is a handheld console. More power = More heat in hands, worse battery life, bigger and more uncomfortable console. Adding more power would take designing a brand new console, which, at this point, they're probably waiting for a Switch 2 to do, considering it usually takes at least half a decade to design, test, manufacture and ready a console for launch. It's easy for us to ask for 4K, better graphics that more power -- But this is a device that is expected to be held in your hand. The PS5 can barley run 4K, and look at the size of the thing. Most of its size comes from keeping the thermals in check so it doesn't run like a jet-engine in your living room. Yes, the PS4 had a Pro-Console, but the console had the advantage of being able to be much larger than the original or slim models. A Switch Pro would not have that luxury.
Why not make a dock-only console then? That would only be an under-powered home console at that point. Nintendo has always dominated the Handheld market, but they've struggled in the Home console market since the SNES days. They clearly have no interest in competing in the home console market anymore.
They could make a far more powerful handheld, that doesn't compromise on power, weight or size. But, it would cost significantly more than the Switch currently costs. I can assure you, only a niche audience would pay for a $400-$500 Nintendo console that doesn't match the power of competitors. People who want power, already have a PlayStation, Xbox or PC, they'd be unwilling to pay for a console with a Next-Gen price tag and Last-Gen specs. Furthermore, Nintendo might be unwilling to utilize that power to its fullest, so not to alienate the nearly 70-80 Million Switch users.
A Switch 2 is most certainly in the works, a pro console wouldn't be wise at this point.
Such a short comment
@@austins.2495 it's far shorter than what I would have written if I didn't have to leave for work lol
To add to your comment:
Games for Play Station/Xbox were often optimized for their respective Pro-Versions, making the base consoles severely underpowered. Imagine this scenario on the Switch, where third-party developers already struggle to provide stable performance. It would be 15fps hell
Personally, I'm not generally a person who cares about "graphics", I don't have any strong interest in 4k or even big feelings on 60fps. Similar to Arlo, I just think the switch needs a little bit more power to run some of the games it already has.
It's not so much a new 3ds scenario where new games are developed for the new system, and run badly on the original. It's that we have games running badly ALREADY, and it would be nice to make them more "playable" at least in some form.
I'm not especially technical, so maybe it's 100% down to bad game optimisation which couldn't be fixed from hardware, but it just FEELS really possible to go "here's a switch that's slightly more powerful, your current games won't struggle so much on it", y'know?
@@Whitepawprint I personally agree with you, as I said however, these things are easy to ask for, but not so easy to implement without cutting corners.
However, if Nintendo were to implement a CPU boost while in docked, I could imagine they could pull out more power from the console. Modders have done it, and proven the chip set has more power than Nintendo utilizes. I personally believe Nintendo refuses to implement this officially, because they want all games to run about the same in portable as they do in docked. However, there are ways to pull more power from the console just through software changes.
I would love a "Pro" Switch myself, but I also don't think it would be a good idea from a marketing perspective, especially if a Switch 2 is nearing the end of its development cycle. We'll probably see one release in 2023, making the Switch OLED our mid-gen upgrade.

I think with all the rumours, everybody expected to much.
Maybe the "Switch Pro" will be the next generation of console for Nintendo instead of just an upgrade and hopefully it will be retro compatible with Switch games and enhance them. Because honestly I always tought that going 4K was too big of a leap for just a mid-generation upgrade and maybe Nintendo realized that too. Like this they will be able to make games exclusive to the "Switch Pro" but since it's a new generation it won't feel as much like a slap on the face for people who still have regular Switch.
Yeah, I'd much rather have a new generation like the DS to 3DS. That is, backward compatibility and similar form factor, but still a new system and not a half step. At over four years old, the Switch is still going strong, so assuming it can keep chugging along for another two, that's a full generation.
Think you’re right on the money 💯
I think this is what Nintendo is doing. And it’s likely due to silicon shortages that they pushed back the switch 1.5 and will likely announce 2nd gen switch to launch holiday 2022 (burning everyone who bought this OLED switch) and that Breath of the Wild 2 will run with “next gen enhancements” on the next gen switch.
And if the silicon shortages drag the switch 2 to 2023 well then you’ll see aumora ask for more time as to avoid crunch.

People who play mostly in docked: "Alright everybody move along nothing to see here."
I play exclusively handheld and even I don't see anything worth about it.
Not entirely, 64gigabyte internal storage, and included lan adapter, made up the $50 extra bucks, then again, it's not even marketed as an upgrade but as an alternative, it shouldn't appeal to anyone who owns a switch already. The only people talking about it being an "upgrade" are those who started the Switch "pro" rumors, because, why not, it brings tons of clicks.
It kinda seems like Nintendo hates people who play on the tv. Since it’s launch in 2017, the switch has got a better battery, better screen, better kickstand, and better speakers. For people playing on the tv there hasn’t really been a big upgrade since 2012:/
IKR?! just give us a docked-only "switch" (switchless switch, lol... a "nintendo bait" or whatever), pack it with a pro-controller, make it cheaper... Nintendo is just another corporation, it too "hates" (disrespects) its own customers... handheld/gimmick focused consolue = no buy from me... Why can't they just make another NES or SNES, just for the current times?!
Marketing it towards TV users instead of on it being a portable puts it in direct competition with the far more competitive home consoles.
By focusing on it being a handheld first, they can justify the lack of processing specs. As soon as they focus on the TV experience, it shines a light on how far behind they are.

To be honest, I'm happy that the switch OLED isn't getting an internal improvement. I see mid-generation console upgrades to be frustrating and FOMO-ey, especially for those who may have gotten the old model just a few months or a year before the announcement of the new one (animal crossing switch, I'm talking about you). Plus, better performance on the upgraded model will most likely lead to exclusive games which will alienate the incredibly large switch install base.

It'll only get worse performance-wise. Most developers are focused on the next gen consoles or PC, so the Switch will get left behind no matter what. I'd rather have a Switch that can run games moderately well at like 1080p 30/60 fps (or 4K 30fps with DLSS), than have to suffer at 360p 20fps land that we're in right now.
It's like Nintendo made a list of consumer complaints with the Switch hardware, ranked them by severity, and then yeeted the top half of the list off New Donk City Hall.

To be fair we are in a semiconductor shortage, for a while, so putting more silicon in it isn't feasible. Also, there aren't really big games to sell new performance right now. Wouldn't waiting till BotW 2 and Splatoon 3 be a better idea. Maybe there were going to do a technical upgrade, but they delayed it because of the shortage.
Yup. Pretty much this. Refining some parts of the hardware for overall later future improvements.
I'm kind of skeptical that this was changed in the middle of the shortage. This hardware was probably in major development before the silicon shortage was a thing. If they had plans to add more hardware, my gut tells me the screen would've seen a resolution bump. This panel is still 720p. I guess they may have decided to quickly swap resolutions, but I think they would've also had to redesign the mainboard for the different power profile of the OLED screen and added hardware. So they would've had to scrap all that work and make the old SOC/mainboard work. My hunch is this may have been the plan from the beginning, otherwise it would've been too much of a loss to scrap everything and make a dumbed down model. I think it would've been delayed if it actually had better hardware. Of course, it's just a hunch.
I've been wanting a second switch, since many times I want to play it at the same time my daughter is playing. When rumors of a new switch model began reaching my ears, I decided to hold off until I see an official announcement. "Will the new thing be worth the wait?" I asked myself. "Or at the announcement, will I just get a current model switch instead?" Well, I think this is worth waiting for and spending the extra $50. Hopefully not many others feel that way so I can get one asap.
Well, even if I'm not gonna be picking one up right now, I'm happy that you're happy. 😊
Nintendo fans: This is the same thing!
Nintendo: This makes perfect sense!
Honestly I'm waiting to hear if the released version has better speakers in terms of both volume and clarity.
If it does I might sell my limited edition switch for the OLED. When it comes right down to it I use handheld almost equally as much as docked. So that makes this version very appealing.
As someone who already owns a Switch, I like that I don't feel the need to buy a system I /technically" already own just to get better performances... and if it's still going to suffer from Joy-con drift, I'm really not eager to throw more of my money at Nintendo...
Well of course, I dont want to buy something that doesn't exist either.
Here’s my drop in the ocean, I never bought my own switch, I was that person who played all the games on friends switched (they lent it to me, so nice) and I’ve been saying I’ll wait for the “switch pro” to buy my own (and the hundreds of games) I’ve waited THIS long. And now my plan has changed. I’m most likely gonna get this OLED model when legends arceus comes out. (Maybeeee unique switch skin? Maybeee not?)

All of the leaks suggested the model we got, all of the rumours suggested features we didn't get. Seems pretty clear to me. While it would have been nice to have a new chip in the switch, maybe something with DLSS to support higher frame rates that way, I think this is fine. The last thing we want is another rush on bigger, more powerful models for Christmas and wait literal years for stock to recover. I am a little wary on how long this model will last. I am reminded of the Gameboy design refresh in 1995 when the gameboy pocket released a year later, and the Gameboy colour two years after that. I think this is to bring in all the remaining non-switch owners before Nintendo makes a real upgrade in another 2-3 years.

Unless there's a successor to the Switch that doesn't actually play original Switch games I think we'll be fine, I don't have the numbers but the few N3DS exclusives probably didn't sell that well compared to if they were available on the base 3DS, though that was a lot less powerful so I could see why a couple games wouldn't work on the OG 3DS. I might buy an OLED Model just so I can give my old Switch to my bro who loves Smash but won't buy a Switch. I don't think they're gonna make "Switch Pro" exclusives because the Switch install base is so high they wouldn't want to lose out on potential sales, they seem to be fine releasing unoptimized games on the base model so I wouldn't worry if a Pro does come along in the next year or two.
