Best rack build I’ve found on UA-cam. I’m currently using 2. Making the 3rd today and will continue to make more. These are very easy to use by yourself and I’m 5ft 4 and if I was taller it would be even easier. I use a step ladder for the top rack other than that it’s amazing!!! Great informative video.
I cannot thank you enough! Took us one day to build the rack and assemble the water system. I now have a full functioning rat rack with litters already. You're the man!
This rack build is perfect all your instruction were spot on thank you! Im just starting with my collection and found out quickly I couldn't afford to keep my snakes unless I breed my own. I feel like this saved me for a fair price to get started thank you.
awesome video! great attention to detail. When i built my first rack, i used side cutters to cut the mesh. 2nd rack i used tin snips or sheetmetal scissors, whatever you want to call them, and it saved a bunch of time and my hands werent as tired. Looking forward to the next video!!!! Keep em coming 👍
Hey Jason, love the videos. This will be my second Rat Rack from your plans. Just had to watch the video again, to refresh my memory on amount of wood. cant wait to see your first clutches hatch. keep up the great work!
Obviously, I’m a little late watching and commenting, but damn. I agree with several of the other comments, best rat rack build I think I’ve seen. On a side note, the fam and I were up in Billings last week. Use to live there. Love it. Took them and showed them around and even hung out on the rims for a bit. Love the views up there.
Built the whole thing exactly as the video instructed. Took $350 in the cheapest materials possible, and 16 hrs work, but it came out great. We had been keeping 28 young to adult rats in glass tanks, and they love the new tubs. Glass tanks are now used as maternity tanks for individual new and bad moms. We find separating them and giving them their own small space makes them calmer and take much better care of the babies.
Actually, I'm currently building 1 now...lumber is about $60, wire was $25(so im all in lumber for@$85...say $100 with skrews and staples)., tubs are actually the highest expence@ 10-12 each(6)$60-$75 65-75 for the water system. And the bedding... So top to bottom all in 225-250....around where I live in NC. .you cannot touch these for less than 350-400... And they are smaller than this.
@@richardkelley8153i also want to make this rak can you tell me the wood sizes and the type of tubs bro? Im a noob at building stuff this is my first project.
@@toweliieteapot3404 i built mine while watching the video...with a notebook...after completion I modified it a little to accommodate the tubs I used...I used the masonry tubs from Lowes....makensure to use 1/2" square wire....it allows the rats to climb a little and fornthenfood to rest upon...make sure you keep a few extra tubs on hand. The rats will chew threw the tubs eventually...they hate to be dirty...lol
Much appreciated! I used your design for a build today. Made a few small changes but kept the main design. Great instructional, definitely saved me some time on it!
If your watching and go to build this, cut the legs at 61 1/2 inches sobif you do the crossmembers and add wheels like he does, the bottom has as much space as the ones above, not necessary, but esthetics...haha. Great video, im currently attaching the wire mesh, and have legs already cut, it is turning out wonderful! Thank you for the great idea! Im also going to try something dofferent with spacing of the rails, im going to turn the unit upsidedown and place a tub there and rest rail on the tub, ensuring the tightest fit
Thanks a bunch for this. My friend and I (myself especially) are to the point it's more economical to breed our own rats. Racks are so expensive. I wish i had a workshop to build in, id invest in the tools abs build my own.
Very good diy you make it look so easy. I will definetly come back to this video when I go to build my rat rack. I especially like how you explain why you do what you do.
Those valve clips.. I tested using a 1/8" fender washer drilled out to fit the waterer barb. then I just put the barb through and connected the hose. so far they did not push the valve out and it stayed in place for over a week, but removing it to pull the tubs out is 100x easier, as it just lifts out. Might want to give it a try. I'm going to convert all mine to the washer setup tomorrow.
I just started building one of these rack and the home depot medium mortar tubbs I picked up yesterday seem to be the original size that Jason used, 15.75" looks about right for the short cuts, the tubbs are 20 inches wide.
im about to build one of these and I don't know what to cut, 15 or 17.. it seems he agreed with the lady above. but it also looks like he is using the 20in tubs in the video
Awesome video bro. I finally got some time to watch it in its entirety. I’ll be referencing this one for sure when I begin to build my own here soon. Keep up the great work
Great workmanship, you are really gifted could never breed rats they all end up pets🙂♥️🐀 plus not a real DIY kind of gal but very awesome info and rat rack 👍👍👍
Home Depot. They are concrete mixing tubs. If memory serves, they come in ar least two sizes, maybe three. So be sure to select the one you want if you're ordering online!
You did an excellent job on this! I don't have all the equipment nor a way to get the wood into my house, so I ended up making bin cages with 106 Qt. locking tubs and hardware cloth bolted to the tops. It was really arduous to cut out the plastic in my tops with just a hand saw but I got 3 of them done. My tubs are on a 6 foot table side by side. I kind of like that I can look in and easily see what's going on in all the rat cages, being that they're positioned horizontally even if it does take up more space.
My husband made a rat rack but not a rack like your I’m in the middle of building one like your. One of our rats got loose how can we get it back so it don’t mess up the house? Any ideas Jason?
Did you pre drill and counter sink the screws you used to hold the side long pieces? It looks like theres a screw there, but that would mean you used screws longer than 3 1/2"
Just measure the space between the bottom of your top shelf and the top of the next shelf, whatevereasirment you get cut a piece of scrap wood at that size and use it as a spacer and clamp in between each shelf so you don't have to measure everytime, save some time and you can use your spacer in the future as many times as necessary
Yep, great advice. spacers when building anything with multiple shelves/drawers etc are perfect. Cuts down on all that measuring and you can still measure slightly different each time with a tape, so spacers are more accurate and save a lot of time.
Thanks a lot for this video!! It helps so much!! Not sure if you mentioned it in previous videos but what are the dimension of the tubs and what ratio do you use for your rats in the rack?
Is there any way you could do a download of measurements and amount of wood that you would need and other supplies like you did with your snake rack build.
I watched the video and wrote down all the dimensions he said. Here is what I came up with. Cut List 18 x 2x3 at 15 3/4" (then rip 6 in half to form 1x1.5") 24 x 2x3 at 28" for the sides and rails 4 2x4 cut to 60" Purchase List 2x3x8ft = 3 for front pieces and T'shelf 2x3x8ft = 7 for long sides and rails 2x4x8ft = 6 for legs and braces, and a single vertical back stop instead of plywood 1/2" thic 2x4ft plywood panels if you want a solid back.
*I am in the middle of the build an now at a standstill* I am really confused on how the 2" screw is supposed to go through the 2.5" board and screw into the other board? It is very clear you leave the shelves flat and not on their 1.5" side.
Hi you mentioned you would make another video on the ramps you make for your grow out tubs, just wondering if you ever did. And great video, best I’ve seen!

So apparently home depot is buying the tubs from a different supplier. They are an inch wider than the rack allows. So I've got to go back and shim out the legs 1/2-5/8 on both sides.
Know if I were to add heat how would go about I'm putting it in a place we're it may get chili. And the may need a warm place to go to.would they need belly heat or back heat

Could these tubs be used for snake racks also. Wouldn't see why not
Does it matter the temperature of water ? In the bucket mine seems pretty warm is that ok for that rats ?
Mildly. Warm water will propagate bacteria faster. Cold water lowers their body temperature and ambient temperature. Room temp water is best.

You can add heat tape, radiant heat panels, heat cable, etc. Just make sure it's not contacting anything and that it's thermostat controlled.
For supplemental ambient heat, quartz heaters are really great too.
How many 2x4’s total do you need for this rack in particular?
They are two by THREES. Much cheaper and lighter.
When I measured out the footage, it came to roughly 20'x2"x4" and 80'x2"x3"

you may have answered this in another video but how often do you clean out the rat tubs?
Weekly
@@MorphMixologyReptiles wow that was fast! Thank you!
Is their a specific gauge mesh that you use so they chew through?
1/2 inch mesh. I use 1/4 for mice because some small mouse hoppers can squeeze through the 1/2 inch mesh.
i don't understand the drive measurement's is there a simple list
Have you ever had rats start chewing away at the small hole near the edge of the tub since you’ve been using the rack?
