Right to repair is the biggest issue. I still have my 2011 macbook pro that I purchased refurbished as I can upgrade the RAM, SSD drive, change out the fan, battery, ETC. It's as good as any new macbook. My iphone was purchased refurbished it's a 2018 XR. My phone, despite being 7 years newer than my macbook, will need to be replaced way before my macbook because there's no way to REPAIR it! I can't even replace the battery. Why not have phones that can be upgraded/repaired without having to toss the entire thing? I'm holding on to my macbook forever as I can upgrade/repair it unlike the newer models designed to be thrown away after a few years.
@@cilstr well that's something but the phone itself has been slowing down and my battery is still at 86% max capacity. I think they're slowing older phones down on purpose still. Upgrading a battery isn't enough to keep the phone going, especially when they're throttling it.
Yes! So far for me it's only an inconvenience, but as they keep coming out with newer phones I worry that it will become more of an issue. Currently, I'm worried about driving somewhere, finding parking, being unable to pay for it because the app is not available on my phone, and having to decide between being late for some important meeting or leaving it up to chance that I would get a parking ticket. (Honestly I'd probably tape some cash over the license plate so that the traffic cop would have to remove the parking fare before reading my license plate and hopefully go easy on me.)
I didn't even see a full apple ad of the new IPhone just the ad that is shown on UA-cam when "browsing" and thought to myself: "oh so they're advertising the release of the same thing with minor adjustments again" So your video came right in time! It is crazy how normal it is for people to want to have a new phone every other year. I remember 5 years ago when I bought my phone. I went to nearest shop to get a new one fast and asked the salesperson about differences between two phones models of the same brand that had a pricing difference of about 100 €. He said that the pricier one mostly had a slightly better camera and a usbc charging port but that the other one would be just fine and - what really sticked in my mind - that I probably would like to have a phone in 2 years time anyway. That really confused me, which is why I told him that I'd love the phone to last as long as it can, because I hate when things break and I need to look out for new things. Then he just looked at me suprised and I took the pricier one (also because I really wanted one with a the USB-C chargeing port) and never regretted my decision. I think it is sad that things are build to break, so I'm glad that there are EU regulations for phones to come with a usbc port and to have the possibility to change the battery (from 2024/25 on I think) but that is not enough. I'm totally with you on the point that companies should use their profit for good causes and to pay people who produce their products better. And instead of throwing a "new" product in the market every year they could wait until they have real innovations and offer high quality repair service through which they will still make profit but probably not enough compared to a new product in their point of view :/
i have an iPhone 10 still and it mostly works but the camera on the newer ones is just so. much. better. so i've been thinking of getting a secondhand 14 soon, but this video encouraged me to wait until mine is totally not working. the camera is good enough and i should be grateful and amazed i have this quality camera in my pocket, on demand at any time??? what a crazy world we live in!
The fact that you thought it through and looked at what is important to you, is beneficial... and it sounds like camera quality is important to you. If Apple doesn’t make their phones repairable and batteries replaceable by the time my current iPhone stops working, then I’ll definitely be looking into getting something different. Before I got this iPhone, I had a Samsung Galaxy S6 that lasted so many years because I was able to easily pop off the back plate and swap out the battery. The camera on it happened to be really good at close-up photography which was an added bonus (eventually had to get a new phone because it started crashing, dropping calls, deleting photos, lagging, and shutting off randomly). Something people are always surprised by is the fact that I have the original 1st generation Apple Watch. I took it from my partner when he upgraded his. It has all the features I need, and I wear it every single day. The battery has definitely degraded over the years, but if I simply put it on the charger for an hour in the middle of the day, it works all the way until I go to bed. 👍👍
Yes me too! I used to have an iphone 5, and there were a lot of things I could no longer do because my phone was older. My concern was that I might one day get a job and be required to use an app that wasn't available for me, and essentially have to choose between getting a new phone or being unable to do my job. This hasn't happened to me yet, but it did happen to my mom (that's why I have upgraded from my iphone 5 :) ). I would be fine financially if I had to get a new phone but it's the principle of the thing.
@@theoldaccountthatiusedtous6767 Gotta love that good ol’ planned obsolescence…😑 In thinking about this more, I realize that I’m actually unsure whether or not the ability to access the internal components of a phone (a repairable phone) would have any effect on combatting planned obsolescence. The ability to repair or replace a broken or worn-out component is of course helpful, but I wonder if replacing parts would give an older phone the ability to operate effectively through years of software updates. To make this happen, I think we would need to make it so phone companies would be required to sell updated components that would be compatible with all of their products (i.e. smartphone processors), but I’d imagine they would be inclined to sell these components at a price that’s only slightly less, or ridiculously higher, than it would be for someone to purchase an entirely new phone in their newest available model. 😑 In that case, I’d say that it would be good if 3rd party companies would sell “generic” smartphone components directly to consumers at an affordable price, but there are of course many issues with this as well (i.e. increased extraction/mining of rare minerals and metals, increased production and shipment, etc.). Keeping my same iPhone 8+ since 2018. Sounds like I should not feel that it is a flex, but when I see people changing their phone every year, it looks like it is. There are very few sustainable companies. Because sustainable means buying local from true local businesses that don't get their supplies from China but from other local providers. Which is almost impossible nowadays. Obviously, Apple (like all corporations) is not going to be sustainable. Do I still use their products? Yes, and I will continue to do so.🙃But, it's because the "greener" alternatives aren't as good (in tech at least).
It's funny, growing up in the 1960's it would seem very odd and funny to keep purchasing a new phone for the home. Our family probably went through 2 phones in the first 25 years of my life.
Growing up in the 90s it seems odd to upgrade this much too. I'm now thinking about all the functions that our phones do nowadays (phone, camera/video camera & film, VCR/DVD player and the VHS tapes and DVDs, tape player/CD player and cassette tapes and CDs, stamps/envelopes and address book, bulletin boards in community spaces, recipe books and other reference books, etc. etc.) It's so weird that we call all these things "phones" these days :P
ive been with my IPhone 6 for 8 years now, ive repaired it a couple of times but Im afraid ive reached my limit, there are so many apps i cant use anymore because the software its too old, it wont be long until i wont be able to use whatsapp. my plan is to buy the iphone 15 so i can go the longest time posible with it because of the software situation that keeps changing like every 5 minutes
All companies should have sustainability expert with a lot of power so they actually became sustainable! What do you think about new topic that will be voted in UE soon? One about greenwashing
9:05 Also according to my bf (who knows sth about tech) says that the 15 and 15 pro have pretty shitty usb-c ports and the pro actually has a slightly better one. So they're doing the switch in order to sell their products in EU BUT they're doing it in a shitty way Other brands have better quality ones, that are faster or sth
I had my iPhone before I worked with Fairphone and while they were so kind to gift it to me, I already had a working phone, so I gave it away to a follower who needed it, I explained all of this during the collab with Fairphone as well ☺️

I’ve got an iPhone 8 and it still works perfectly. I don’t have any trouble downloading the updates and the most recent 16.5.5 was no problem at all so I’m not sure why you think they only have a shelf life of 2-3 years?

So they're doing the switch in order to sell their products in EU BUT they're doing it in a shitty way
Other brands have better quality ones, that are faster or sth
Your pic is just great!!
Me : I guess this video is for me
Also me : Living on $73-a-month paycheck in a developing country
everyone is welcome in the anti-Apple-bullshit club
Nice try apple!! Very informative video. Thanks!
Thank you!!! This is why I love your channel!! ❤❤❤

Did you see Apple’s Mother Earth video? I’d love a reaction video!! I’m so curious to know what you think! 💚
right!! me too
Wait, what happened to your Fair Phone?
I had my iPhone before I worked with Fairphone and while they were so kind to gift it to me, I already had a working phone, so I gave it away to a follower who needed it, I explained all of this during the collab with Fairphone as well ☺️
@@Gittemary thanks! I forgot that you told that in that vid :)
If they make tablets, I will consider switching to fair phone! After my iPad and my iPhone go kaput.

Schau dir vlt. Shiftphone an :), die bieten schon beides an. Ist aber auch etwas teurer, dafür kann und wird man sogar mit Anleitungen ausgestattet, die Geräte selbst einfach zu reparieren.
I couldn’t like your video fast enough. When I saw the 🍎advertisement before some other UA-cam thing that I was watching I lost my shit. I cannot believe what they are saying versus what they’re actually doing is in such conflict with eachother. The most sustainable thing is to not buy anything.
That Mother Earth character fully broke me 😂
Omg, yes! I was screaming.
I think Apple isn't really improving in the phone department I had an iPhone for all my life and I had an issue with everyone minus my 11 pro max and my 13 pro max they are the best iPhones in my option for anything I just hate after a certain amount of time like 2 -3 years they don't work because the software is purposfully wearing them down I wish they could improve to make the software compatible for older devices for like within the last 4-7 instead of 2 -3 because they are a good product when they work right there's just things I can't stand that they can improve on
I’ve got an iPhone 8 and it still works perfectly. I don’t have any trouble downloading the updates and the most recent 16.5.5 was no problem at all so I’m not sure why you think they only have a shelf life of 2-3 years?
I love your videos
I bought the very first iPad, and very first iPhone, never again. Stopped working after it didn't accept an update. Since then my computer/ phone I bought from different company - less technical 👍 & lasted several years 🎉
❤
I really enjoy your educative videos, but sometimes I find it hard to follow :(
