I love how you manage to perfectly demonstrate fundamental physics concepts in a way that most school demos have trouble with. The fact that it's all a simulation means you can remove unnecessary variables like friction, and tweak things like wave speed. It's awesome.

I work in electric power distribution and we have to sometimes place extra lightning arresters at the end of power lines due to the wave doubling effect at the velocity = 0 boundary. When lightning strikes a power line it creates a traveling wave along the line that reflects at the end and creates huge voltages.

Beautiful video. At 11:40, shouldn’t it be reflected amplitude - initial amplitude = transmitted amplitude?
    Also if I stack up 3 materials one after another with v1=1, v2= 10 and v3=100, would I be able to cascade the equations to get a final amplitude of (2 * 10 / (10 + 1)) * (2 * 100/ (100+ 10) = 4 * 10/11 * 100/110 = 4 * 100/121 = 3.27 or do the waves and its reflections interfere, hence changing altering equation and we get a much lower value (lower than 2).
I believe the equation above comes from the tension equation (balanced forces at each point in the material) along with conservation of energy!

    • @EugeneKhutoryansky
      @EugeneKhutoryansky  3 місяці тому +2

The equation in the video is correct. One way to see this is by thinking about the example where the reflected amplitude is zero (V1=V2). In this case, the initial amplitude should equal the transmitted amplitude, as is shown in the equation in my video. By contrast, in the equation you wrote, you have transmitted amplitude = -initial amplitude. As for your second question, if you stack up materials as you describe, you can get an amplitude in the final material more than double that of the initial wave.

keep doing cool things! thank You! 🎉

Does this apply to photons even though they move at relativistic speeds? I would have expected that, if we have the wavefunction of an individual photon as the wave, that the part reflected vs transmitted would be like, the superposition of whether or not it was reflected,
But, in that case, I would expect the squares of the amplitudes to add to the square of the original amplitude (the squares of the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted parts being the probability of it being observed to have been reflected or transmitted respectively), rather than the amplitudes adding to the original amplitude?
Maybe this only applies in the situation with a large number of photons? Like, if the amplitude isn’t the probability amplitude, but the photon number or something?
Am I making a silly mistake?
Uh, if we have a Bosonic Fock space and for the single particle, in state psi_1 , uh, U(psi_1) = sqrt(p) psi_2 + sqrt(1-p) psi_3 (with psi_2 and psi_3 being orthogonal states)
Then, the analogous thing to U with domain the Fock space, would send the vector with N copies of psi_1 to…
    uhh…
Well, the N copies of psi_1 can be obtained by the N-th power of the creation operator for psi_1 , applied to the vacuum vector..
    and then, F(U) (a_1^*)^N Omega = (F(U) a_1^* F(U)^*)^N F(U) Omega
    which is probably = (F(U) a_1^* F(U)^*)^N Omega ?
    which is maybe (sqrt(p) a_2^* + sqrt(1-p) a_3^*)^N Omega ?
Which seems like it would be…
well, the a_2^* and a_3^* should commute with each-other due to it being the Bosonic Fock space,
    so, should be like, sum_{k=0}^N binom(N,k) sqrt(p^k (1-p)^{N-k} ) (a_2^*)^k (a_3^*)^{N-k} Omega
Which, wait, that isn’t properly normalized because the binomial coefficient would get squared… uhh… I made a mistake…
If N is large… I guess the variance in “how many are reflected” only grows as sqrt(N) , and so the variance in the fraction that are reflected goes as sqrt(1/N) , and so goes to zero as N goes to infinity.
Hm. I don’t know relativistic QFT. I guess for non-relativistic quantum mechanics, I can’t really have the wave speed be independent of the frequency… can I? Not for a free particle in any case…
(Though, presumably something similar should be true for phonons, and those don’t have relativistic speeds, so, it should be possible to relate what is described here to a limit of a large number of phonons?)
Ok, yeah, while I imagine that what is described in the video probably applies to light, I don’t know how to relate it to a quantum mechanical picture.

Lightning is rapid heat loss striking atmospheric gasses lighting up surrounding atmospheres from instantaneously disolving internal magnetic fields grounding currents through its nucleus or core where external heat energy force is strongest as external heat energy outside of entanglement of mass as potential renewable heat energy when absorbed into internal magnetic fields. Unabsorbed instantaneously disolving internal magnetic fields as external heat energy force of pressure as fire lines in the sky like forest fires. Waves crash the beach or rocks with overspray. Electricity is rapid heat exchanging through mass as grounding currents into earth's internal magnetic field. When heat can't rise above the cold atmospheric gasses, it condensates. Heat tunnels through the eye of the storm until pressure is equalization to magnetism centrifugal force cycling circulation within and without entanglement of magnetic fields as external heat energy singularities within and without entanglement of internal magnetic fields grounding currents through its nucleus or core where force is strongest around it. Hurricanes and tornadoes spinning all external heat energy faster than normal momentum of space itself. Centrifugal force within and without mass equalization of pressure. Heat cycling circulation patterns around cold repulsion of space as the nucleus neutralized repulsion within mass as outward force of pressure. Hurricanes and tornadoes are outward force of pressure in repulsion to cold space itself within and without entanglement of internal and external magnetic fields like black holes. External magnetic fields spinning around these monopoles of pure cold repulsion within the nucleus or core where external heat force is stronger at the event horizon perimeter. Tornadoes and hurricanes work as magnetic fields. Magnetism explains everything about physics.

If the music bothers you that much, you can turn off the sound and turn on the subtitles.
