  • Tekno Autosports' Jonathon Webb gives us the low down on fitting a Varex muffler to a V8 powered Holden VF Commodore SS-V and shows us some other innovative products by XForce.
    _____________________________________
    VAREX™ mufflers combine both the design technology of the stock muffler and the performance muffler into one single compact unit. A sophisticated butterfly valve mechanism is implemented to redirect the exhaust gas flow and vary be-tween the two. For higher sound level, the exhaust flows are directed through the opening path and produces maximum power with a robust sound level (or the “sports car note”) and near-zero resistance.

    I have VF-SSV which was one of the first off the production line in 2013. As a retired Superbike racer, I have to admit when I purchased the V8 (my 2nd new car) I was not that overly impressed with the note. One of the first things you learn about performance mods required for racing is breathing. Simply put, you cannot have your intake greater than your capacity to exhale. So I looked around at exhaust systems and came across the XForce Varex system. Variable exhaust back pressure has been used in street and racing motorcycles for quite some time. I had my system fitted (21/5" from the Cat back Stainless) straight away and I couldn't be happier with the results. When I come and it's late I quiet the exhaust down to what I considered very close to factory levels if not less. No annoyed neighbors and in traffic more peaceful. But, when you want to hear that real V8 roar its just a flick the switch and the difference is well worth experiencing. Next step, will be Over the radiator air intake, but I'm in no hurry as I have the best of both worlds. Nothing like being at a set of lights quiet and then someone pulls up beside you. Nonchantly, open up the flow and away you go and you hear the V8 growl as they wonder where that came from. Nearly 5 years old, and the result. I Love it!! It's the car equivalent of an Akrapovic or a Yoshimura bike performance exhaust.

    I had Xforce on 2 of my cars, both exhausts cracked around welds, was probably the poorest quality I have seen. Unfortunately I tried them a second time and got the same issue.
    Now I only use DiFilippo Exhausts. A bit more pricey but the sound quality and workmanship are second to none.

    The Stock one pops and crackles and is loud enough for most people I also think it has better looking tips.

    Would The oval style 3inch and dual outlet would be quieter than cannon style 3"? (both with valve closed)

    Wouldn't it be a little restrictive having a tiny little gole for the exhaust gasses to get through?

    • @ndh8445
      @ndh8445 9 років тому +1

      and the factory system doesn't?

    • @jjlritchie
      @jjlritchie 9 років тому

      thesamandnath I'm sure it does but the varex system is literally closing a solid flap of metal over the entire exhaust pipe. Stock doesn't do that. It uses the muffler to reduce the sound and flow of the exhaust, not just completely capping it off.

    • @fullboost
      @fullboost  9 років тому

      James Ritchie It only blocks the middle of the muffler off. This sort of thing has multiple uses, i.e no one like to come home late at night and wake the neighbours :)

    • @jjlritchie
      @jjlritchie 9 років тому

      Fullboost so are you saying that exhaust bypasses the middle pipe via other means?

    • @fullboost
      @fullboost  9 років тому +11

      James Ritchie When the muffler is closed it essentially works the same as a stock muffler does (the flows runs through the chamber of the muffler).

      Usually it's because they're too busy following everyone else's opinions so not to stand out of the crowd. They rarely own, seen or heard half the shit they bag, just gotta look like they're part of the flock. I've had xforce stainless with varex and can't fault them.

    • @jasonstranthon5183
      @jasonstranthon5183 2 роки тому +1

      They don't they just annoyed that they paid twice as much for worse sound i guess ?
      I've had my xforce for 5 years now and its still going strong and sounds great.
      I get the difillio is "technically" better quality but to me the sound muffled and not great at all.
      In the end the steel is almost identical on all systems if you buy stainless or not. Its how well done the bends are and the welds that probably makes difillo and the more expensive ones "better" to some..........however...... its like buying expensive nike football boots only to get smashed by someone in no name brand ones.......... makes no diff in the end cept your pocket.
      A full custom system build exactly for your motor and car is what is best. Its why every drag and racecar does it themself and doesnt "buy off the shelf" (unless ofc the rules for the series state you have to use this or that system)

    Their 4” variable muffler only has an 1 1/2” opening for the quite setting. I’m not an engineer but my common sense degree tells me that will be very restrictive even for a small car. Called xforce and their explanation was to not close the valve all the way. Ha I don’t think so. It got returned.

    Maybe because X-Force use kitchen sink grade steel and are made in China.
    Di Filippo or Pacemaker use the right grade steel and should last as long as the car.
    Another thing is that the Varex system is not EPA compliant.
    Just bypass all this crap and get the 2016 VF SSV S2

    • @ashcosmo3854
      @ashcosmo3854 8 років тому +2

      +Ben McLarty Any aftermarket exhaust is not EPA compliant as the VE and VF stock exhausts sit at 89-90 decibels and we all know how shit quiet they are lol the police can straight up defect Varex on the street though without testing it.
      I've got the VF 2 but stock is never enough sounds good but it's no aftermarket, my old VE had Xforce and it sounded good so can't knock them despite their reputation. Even Chinese grade steel is going to outlast the car I say if it sounds good then go for it, the only reason I want Walkinshaw is they offer manufacturers warranty, I honestly think KPM and Xforce sound better though

      @@ashcosmo3854 You can be defected for running different profile tires if they are not listed on the ADR Compliance sheet for ANY vehicle, let alone tires and even fuel being used. Tints on screen, positioning of ANY item on inside of the windscreen. In short, there is pretty much no vehicle (NSW) that is above being defected once something has changed from when you drove off the showroom floor. The trick to avoiding getting fined or a defect notice regarding variable exhaust or open exhaust etc., or just being pulled over is really simple and easy.
      Ensure brain engaged before starting the motor, and don't leave common sense in the toolbox before you head out.

    • @ashcosmo3854
      @ashcosmo3854 5 років тому

      @@stuarthablethwaite9297 Actually there are quite clear rules for what you can and can't do to your car. Valve operated exhaust is a clear no no. Stick to what you can legally do and you won't run into trouble. Tint, wheels engine modifications can all be done legally of you do it the proper way. These exhausts won't pass anything

    • @stuarthablethwaite9297
      @stuarthablethwaite9297 5 років тому +2

      @@ashcosmo3854 Appreciate your input. I have had it 5 years no probs or dramas, and trust me having owned a dealership there is a multitude of ways that can cause grief from mods if the HWP or RMS EPA decide to give a vehicle some close scrutiny. What I was trying to say is. Usually, the defect notice or fine is encountered by basically drawing adverse attention after a stupid stunt or act for the surrounding conditions. Not here to say what rules are right or wrong, more if people do stupid things then it's equally stupid not to expect the said fine or defect.
      Point of variable exhaust - Yamaha EXUP (Production Motorcycles) around from late 80's early 90's for sure.
      , there are quite a few other examples. As I said my point was how a vehicle is operated determines more than anything else usually.
