My guess would be that as soon as they come up they have access to light right away. They can also somewhat detect light presence under the soil (esp since the soil layer on top of them is so thin)
Tomato seedlings don’t need light to germinate. Switch the grow light on as soon as you see the seedling start to emerge for sure, but any earlier is a waste of time

idk bro i just used from tomato seed from my local tomato and used tap water some soil from my backyard and placed it on my windowsill with a cup over the soil
Buy one. Seedlings need 12-16 hours of light to grow properly. There isn't enough sunlight during the early spring months to give them that. They'll grow really thin and break easily. You can save money by going to the hardware store and just buying any light that has over 2000 lumens and has 5000 Kelvin.
Any plastic pot with a grain hole at the bottom will do I do recommend that you use a water catching tray instead of the clip-on bottom covers because they will just trap in water but it's all about that soil what plant are you trying to re-pot
This is BS. You don’t need worm castings. And you just add water and dirt. Oh wow. Stupid. The germination rate has more to do With the temp and the state of your seeds ( if seeds were kept in the fridge or out in the heat)

My heritage tomatoes are also a mystery! I found some seeds in a store bought purée and went from there
I just put a slice of tomato under a bit of soil in the pot and voila a bunch of tomatoes

The light provides a lot of heat but it's also to stop the seedlings from stretching which makes the plant weak

I heard that 100% termination rate for any marajuana seed is to keep it in 1% hydrogen peroxide- I wonder if this goes for tomato too
