You can buy the springs at a farm supply store. They are used for stretching fencing wire.

I do this with every load. Guarantees the top two layers stay flat and the stack is under compression as the load dries and shrinks.

I am doing pretty well the same thing but use small bear traps and chain . I use a 2x2" square tubing across the top so i get even pressure across the top .
