100% SAILING! New Top Speed Record in BIG Wind & Waves [Ep. 64]

- This is real sailing, not your standard floating in the Bahamas videos from other UA-cam Channels. We cruise doublehanded to a new record speed as we surf big waves heading toward the coast of Africa.
We are headed for South America, non-stop, from Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Our goal is Mar Del Plata, Argentina, then on to Chile and the fjords of Patagonia, but we are unsure if we will be able to enter or if the countries will be open or closed.

So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too!
Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. We have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date.
We watched other sailing channels before we left as well. We even considered van life, a tiny home, or a motorhome / rv. Some of the channels we enjoyed were Gone with the Wynns, Project Atticus, and MJ Sailing. We didn't really set out to be influencers, but we wanted to return the good karma and pass our inspiration and knowledge along.
Enough of this, we hope you enjoy our relaxing video on #sailingsunday!

Great vidio always the best part of my week have a safe passage and give Roxy a big hug. Thanks
What a wonderful comment Brad! Thank you, I will give Roxy a hug right now. We are so happy we can be part of your week. :-)
Wow, great sailing footage. Amazing! Great job you two!
Thank you!
You guys are fun to watch; real, fun, chill, and experienced young racer-cruisers. Great channel.
Thanks so much d p! :-)
Good to see someone who is not frighten of sailing in stronger winds with bigger waves and enjoying the sailing experience.
Glad you are enjoying Glen :-)
J-Boats are modern sport boats for speed! Cheers Captain Denny!
Cheers Captain Denny!!
hey guys, it's good to see people who can actually sail enjoying those conditions rather than quivering (if only internally) with trepidation about what might happen! More, please.
Heu Capfka! Glad you enjoyed. Our racing experience in big conditions helps out a lot. We think it is good to go push yourself and your boat a bit at times. More to come next episode, the wind doesn't ease yet ;-)
Being from MI I liked your shirt at 5:00 minutes in, and the sailing in the video was refreshing. Keep it up.
Allright! We love hearing from home :-) Woot!!!
@@SailingSweetRuca Well, it is snowing in MQT with ice. So, you know same o, same o. I will keep watching your adventures, take care.
I love your wife’s actions and smile when the boats rolling! Enjoy your attitudes♥️ I appreciate how you have safely lines hooked up! Happy sailing🐋🐠🐬☕️⛵️

Very happy to see some sailing on a sailing channel not just a travel destinations & life stories..
Hi Rustyjeff, glad you are enjoying the sailing, there is lots more to come :-)
Safe trip folks !
Thanks so much JanHB!!!!!
I can’t believe how at ease you are sailing in such wind and water. Definitely not a rookie at this.
Years of racing has really helped us learn to stay calm, collected, and trust the boat in big conditions.
Some of the BEST wave video I've ever seen on a UA-cam Sailing Channel. Best wishes for a safe journey.
Wow, thank you!
Fantastic stuff - that’s real sailing! Getting a hull to surf on her own bow wave and leave theoretical hull speed in her wake looks like a wild ride 😎 Excellent footage.
Thanks Kevin! We are so glad you enjoyed. This was such a good sailing day! The feeling of the hull releasing when surfing is unmatched!
Great vid, thanks and hold on!!
Heya Ed, hope all is well :-) You're welcome!
Great music xxx
Thanks :-)
Cheers guys!
Cheers Trev! :-)
Awesome footage, great to watch two high level sailors on the move. " This is real sailing not some Caribbean cruise". That was funny. Kate looked like she was freaking out in the thick of it. Good luck and safe travels......
Hey Ty! The conditions really built late in the day. Intimidating and uneasy conditions for sure. Lots of high loads and little room for mistakes, but there is nothing quite like the feeling of a boat unloading on a long surf :-)
This looks fantastic
Thanks Colin!
One of the best sailing episodes ever. Great videography and editing. Great music, too! Safe journeys!
Wow! Awesome comment. Thanks David. Have to thank the Patrons and the excellent artists on Epedemic Sound for the music score :-)
Nice to see some great sailing hauling butt 👍❤️
Right on Kevin! :-)
Congrats on starting the sail !!!! Great stuff - thanks for taking us along.
You bet! Thanks for the great comment @MrNewdug!
Great episode, one of your best. Great sailing action. Congrats on the 15.45 knots. Stay safe and have fun.
Thank you very much! That was such a great sailing day. Even more speed next week ;-)
Nice to see some real sailing......great video...
Thanks Steve! :-)
👍👍👍👍👍great episode.
Yayyy! Thanks Mark!
Should have put the 3rd reef in sooner. Great sailing video!!
Haha perhaps, but it was fun going for a rip after being stuck at the marina!
wow living the dream
:-)
Nice to be running WITH those waves!
Right on Mark. No fun at all against them :-)
Looking great!
Thanks Rich!!
Great video, editing and commentary. Nice Michigan shirt by the way.
Just south of Grand Rapids here.
Hey Brian! Thanks for the comment. Love Grand Rapids! Nice shout out ✋🏻
you guys are the best sailors i watch a lot of sailing channels no one comes close to guys
Wow, thanks!!!!! That is quite a big compliment :-)
I'm digging it! Takes me back to my racing days!
Yeeeee hawwwww! More to come ;-)
Great to see ye sailing again and at great speed 😊, ye look so happy to be back out on the ocean .
Love the new head sail . Music is lovely also 😊
Hi Peter!! Woo hoo! Lets go sailing :-) Can't wait to see you take off again on your channel! How is the boat coming along?
@@SailingSweetRuca yes I can’t wait to set off for Ireland, lots of work to be done there before my solo nonstop circumnavigation in august 😊⛵️
Great video. This is what I follow you two for.
Awesome! Thanks Albert. More to come :-)
good to watch real sailing
Good to have you sailing along :-)
That was so much fun! When that rock music kicked in my heart was racing. Then you let us listen to the sound of nature during the reef and my heart started pounding and I could just feel the intensity.
Hey KGladie! Thanks a lot. We are glad you enjoyed the sailing sounds and hope you felt like you were there! Time for some waterproof mics?
Finally cruisers not afraid to go fast.
Haha! Thanks Eric. That was some fun sailing :-)
now that looks like a ride that would not fade from memory very quick , i would like to experience that some day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats hard core sailing there
Hi bill! Glad you enjoyed it :-) Great memories! We are sure you will get your chance someday ;-)
Wow, I've been waiting for this trip to begin. It is going to be interesting, and unique!
Hi George, we are excited as well! It feels good to be on the water. Enjoy!
First time I have watched your channel, your background must be J-racing, have a bit of that in my background as well and you are sailing the boat like you are racing, but clearly having fun and you were in complete control.
Welcome aboard JC! We have enjoyed lots of racing on all sorts of boats, including quite a few J's.
I love the footage of you guys putting in the 3rd reef. Gives me that pucker factor, knowing what it feels like trying to do a maneuver like that with the wind and waves breaking!
Awesome! We weren't sure if people would like that part or not, as the audio is so muffled to stop wind noise, but we were hoping you would like the real thing. :-)
@@SailingSweetRuca nah it adds so much to the realism. You’re a brave woman up there on the foredeck in weather like that! That kind of sailing, mix of excitement and fear, is what really makes me love the challenge!
Kudos for sure! Thanks Rich! It's not for the faint of heart but we had a blast
There was some really epic music in the initial part of this episode reminds me of the old-fashioned clipper ship from the 19th century. Great intro. Cheers.
I loved the music too
Glad you liked it @Sgt-Bond, we tried something new. We were worried it sounded to Disney like, but we thought it was cool also :-) Cheers!
Awesome video ! I enjoy it so much . Thank you for sharing .
You're welcome! So happy to hear you enjoyed!!!! :-)
Awesome sailing footage!! Wow!!
Many thanks! More to come :-)
I love surfing on my Mirage 35. Hit 8.2 in 18 knot winds on the Chesapeake Bay.
That is haulin' the mail, such fun! Well done Ronald!!!! The Mirage is a Perry design, right? Good taste in boats. Yeee hawwwww :-)
TRE JOLIE 😍
First Comment :-) Woo Hooooo! Nicely Done Tofik!
the water is such a pretty blue color
We love that blue color, there is something special about it. The camera did a good job capturing it.
Great video. I really like to hear the actual sound of sailing.
Thanks @Isaac! We like the sailing sounds also :-)
Awesome. Really good stuff.
Thanks Drew :-)
Great coordination and team work. You guys keep me on the edge of my seat. I know I am a long way behind your present position, but by binge watching I'll catch up. Stay safe. Looking ahead to what's in store. By the way, I LOVE Roxy.
Thanks so much Dennis! That is wonderful to hear. We will keep them coming!
Great sailing , looking forward in watching your videos stay safe !
Thanks William! Looking forward to hearing from you more often! Stay safe as well!! :-)
Great video!!!
Thanks M!
Call me a chicken but short handed, offshore I fire up Dr Yanmar, turn up into the wind, reef then run away. Much less stress and risk. Great episode guys.
Wouldnt call you that! Glad you enjoyed!!
maybe someday... Great video!
Thanks! Someday will come one day :-)
2:30 NEW JIB/GENOA, YAY!
9:12 SV Granma is an Allures 45.9. Not surprising the J Boat is faster.
You both look totally at home on the water. :) I imagine you'd be a lot of fun as race skippers too.
17:11 Great teamwork, communication, and helming on the downwind reef.
Definitely yay for the new sail. Can sail higher and more efficiently!
Allures can hold their own. Solid boat. Jealous of the head space!
Thanks for the compliments. We have a lot of fun behind the wheel and during a race. 🤙🏻😁 That's helped a lot in our teamwork on the boat.
@@SailingSweetRuca It shows. You work superbly well together.
And I'm enjoying seeing some of your personalities too. You seem like really nice people in addition to being great sailors.
Keep up the great work! Please keep low-key teaching too.
Also really enjoying your sailing equipment and how you have the boat set up in general. Would be very interested in your racing software. Presumably it's covered in some of the videos. (I'm gradually watching them.)
The Allures is a nice boat for sure. Kind of apples and oranges. The J-Boats with their low decks, low freeboard and low windage tend to be a bit cramped below, but you knew that. I kept bumping my head on the inner forward door of the J-105, and I'm short.
Haha the J/105 is a fun boat for sure! Definitely cramped for cruising. Thanks for all the nice comments. We try to teach without being too basic or advanced. Hope it's working! Glad you are enjoying! Cheers!
PS Curtis made a short video about using waypoints in this software. We highly recommend it for efficient cruising as well! ua-cam.com/video/yZJtomdTZLA/v-deo.html
@@SailingSweetRuca Thanks much!
Love the video! This is real offshore sailing at its best. Your skills and seamanship are a real pleasure to see. It really makes me want to get out there again! My only criticism is the music. It is too loud and distracting, at least for me. Thanks for taking us along with you on your adventure!
Thanks for the comment and for the feedback Ken! I'm definitely still trying to improve my sound quality so your comment is helpful. We are glad you are enjoying the content. Hopefully we will see you out there again!
Now that is my kind of sailing👍👍👍
Allright!!! Rockin!
Rock on you two, fair winds🥇
Wow, great sailing. Don’t get to see much of that on YT.
Thanks Brandon!
Great stuff, crack on!
Thank you kindly!
good journey
Thank you :-)
Now, THAT was some exciting 'sailing' kids. (Don't try this at home- trained professionals doing real work that matters here). I must admit, I held my breathe waiting for timing to hit between swells. And, when you finally turned down to your heading for good- she settled right in- nicely! Hmmm, 20 minutes late for a reef maybe? Whew- it's in and that's all that matters. Thanks for bringing us along- I ENJOYED it! Hahaha
Well said! That was a tough reef for sure! So glad you enjoyed. More big conditions next week :-)
@@SailingSweetRuca Sweet boat, exciting ride & great teamwork. I'm impressed with the boat- really- quite capable in those heavy conditions. All of those expensive days on the hard paying off. Chafing proving just how quick & nasty deferred timing can be- good catch! I was feeling a little overwhelmed at 11 knots aiming essentially towards land at night- I'd be having a smidge of second thoughts & considering dropping the main and maybe taking a heading of 150? But, how much surfing, how much driving the bow down...close to the edge. Can't say thank you enough- really gives me PTSD!
@@DCGULL01 Oh no, we aren't trying to give you PTSD! You sound like you really enjoy sailing though and know your stuff! Its great here from others that have been there. Can't say we weren't nervous, those were challenging conditions! Curtis secretly wished he could push for 20 knots surfing with a drone shot, Volvo Ocean Race style, but common sense go the better of him ;-) We still have a lot of sailing miles to go and can't afford to explode spinnakers! More to come next week!
I f#$%ing loved it a sailing channel about sailing . Great job
Other channel should take note
Thanks @Sailing Segundo! We see you have a few videos up also, going to head over your way and check them out ;-)
Great sailing video, putting in a third reef takes practice in calm conditions. You don't want to learn how on-the-fly.
Thanks Rauf. Right on! :-)
Hey if you put a topping lift (up haul) on the whisker pole it will help stabalise the pole. Also if it gets breezy you can lift the wisker pole higher to help twist off some of the jib/genoa de- powering it
Great advice! Sounds spot on. We will have to try it next time we have the pole on. Got to admit we have hardly ever sailed with a whisker pole before this boat, we think maybe one time in a Friday fun race for a few miles.
@@SailingSweetRuca love following you guys come stop off in New Zealand!
sail safe 🙂
Glad you got rid of that whisker pole on the jib. A broach on that point of sail could easily have punched the pole into the mast. Great footage and impressive reefing work for a short handed crew. The J boat showing its pedigree...
Thanks Schooner! We aren't big fans of the whisker pole either and were also happy to put it away. Glad you liked the reefing work. The J/46 was really in its element.
Catamarans may be roomier than your boat and not heeling as much as you do but I would NEVER take a cat where you are heading. Not only that but that boat of yours is a rocket ship
Hi Nick, glad you are enjoying the boat. She is great fun to sail and a good fit for us all around. There are surely trade offs between the monos and cats. If we had a tricked out fast catamaran we would 100% take it down there ;-) There is a video out there somewhere of a Gunboat 60 sailing in similar conditions while having teacups on the table :-)
@@SailingSweetRuca Hey Kate, Curtis. There is a video of a cat in a bad storm on CatGreatcircle channel called Windforce 10 to Ibiza. I know how you all like to go fast. Watching that might get your blood pumping.
That's a sketchy point of sail to put a reef in for sure. Glad it went in OK. And, that pure ocean sound is awesome. I can hear the wind in the stays and that's not something you get to hear during an Ohio winter. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. The wind was howling. Stay safe and warm back in Ohio, hope the lake unfreezes soon and you get back out on the water :-)
Hello sweet ruca sailors that boat looks like it was going west from the looks of the waves and back of you that was pretty awesome I don't know anything about sailing yet until I learn one day but that boat looks really fast for a mono haul the other videos I see with mono hulls I never seen him go that fast stay safe out there I enjoyed your video God bless you
Hi @Calvin Garrett. We were headed about 200-220 degrees via the magnetic compass (there is about -5 degrees of compass variation also). So you are correct, a little SW, nice work! No worries about not knowing much, the best way to learn is to dive in! We are happy to share our experience. Regarding fast mono hulls....it really depends on the conditions and sailing angles and boat design. Ours leans towards the faster edge of cruising monohulls, and these were big conditions that allowed for faster than usual speeds. Cheers!!!
@@SailingSweetRuca yes it will be a while before I can dive in to learn when I was younger I always like to build model sailboats other boats and airplanes and remote control airplanes but I want to get into the serious sport of those when I can but thank you for replying back God bless you all and stay safe out there.
Great stuff why the j 46? Life raft a bit exposed for me. Have fun
Hi Robert! Because we can't afford a Gunboat 62 and a Class 40 doesn't have a queen size bed and walk in shower ;-) Everything is a comprimise. Same with the liferaft position, etc.

Rockin'! Thanks M K!

Thanks Stephen! :-)
Lovely to be able to surf under autopilot. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and skill. I wonder if the new J45 would handle as well, a broader stern and probably lighter.
Hi B M! You're welcome, thanks for watching and commenting! Good question! The broad stern is a double edge sword in those conditions. Faster and more stable initially, but less room for error. All in all though, the new J45 is a sweet boat. We would love to line up next to one someday and compare the old to new side by side!
@@SailingSweetRuca Compare "side by side" you have to be joking, the only time that would happen is at the start. You are two of the best sailors I've had the pleasure to watch, bad ass go for the kill shot racers. Don't get me wrong cruising is fantastic, you can do both just never loose your edge. Outstanding.....tm
Awesome!! So when downwind sailing and u have to “face the wind” in order to change sail or reef. In those conditions you had to somehow turn the boat into the wind? Wow
Hi Victor! Correct, the load needs to come off of the sail. Not all the way head to wind is required though.
New sails I am sure are getting you some better performance. I'll bet you haven't had new sails since you purchased the boat right? The carbon membrane sails are super nice, you just have to be careful they don't delaminate. I'm watching with a good bit of interest your route past the Southern tip of South America. Personally I can't understand why more sailboats don't do this. There is a lot to see on the way, and honestly paying four grand or more to go through the Panama Canal when additional fuel isn't much of an issue to go around. Sailboats just aren't going to burn much fuel taking the long way around. How many months of cruising does that canal trip pay for going the long way round??? My guess is that a sailboat saves money and it can be put into seeing the sights rather than paying the Ch-eye-knees to go through the canal.
This is our first new sail we have purchased for this boat. So far it has been worth it. Curtis can talk about sails all day.
You are correct about the capes. We chose this route for a few reasons. Cost of the canal transit was a factor, however the cost of additional boat prep, time, and wear and tear is easily offset by the canal if the main goal is to get to the Pacific as fast as possible.
We prefer to take the long way and enjoy staying long enough in places to get to know people and cultures, rather than just be sailing tourists.
We know what you are getting at about the canal ownership, but we do have and sail with lots of great Asian friends. Governments and propaganda are not always great representatives of the individual people that live there.
Great clarity with your videos. I'm new to your channel. I must have missed the information about the boat. What is the manufacturer-length-type.
Really enjoy your personalities. Thanks!
Thanks Tim. The boat is a year 2000 46' J Boats J/46. You can find more out about it here jboats.com/j46-performance-sailboat or on our own website here sweetruca.com/about-the-boat/
Wow, gotta love the autopilot 👍
Heck yeah! The new AP is killing it! We need a new name for it?
Love all the teaching you do with different set ups for different conditions. The more you do that and more you post on really challenging conditions, the more following you’ll get. People love details and pros and cons of what you’re doing. Your experience racing shows 👍
Great sailing video!! Do you not have a preventer on your mailsail?? I don't see one. Thanks
Hi Doug. We are running the boom brake in this eoisode. We do run a preventer sometimes which you will see later on this trip.
Love this video. Great video. I really like the music can you please share the artist name and songs.
It's now in the description :)
Interesting that you don’t have a preventer fitted to the main when going down wind.. I have seen some pretty serious injury from accidental jibes in the bay of biscay in similar conditions that required hi-line casevac - in that case it was the main sheet that propelled the individual headfirst into a winch - seriously ouch!
Hi Andrew. Good point on the mainsheet! That is a very real concern. I think something like you described sadly happened in the ARC this year. We've also unfortunately seen injuries and deaths first hand when racing.
Despite us making it look like fun, there are serious risks and consequences and there is a high level of focus on the boat and conditions.
We call those areas near high load sheets "death triangles." This includes the mainsheet area. It is important for sailors to be aware of this and always "feel" the boat to stay safe.
We do have a boom brake fitted in this video, which has some of the safety functions of a preventer. We also do rig an end-boom preventer sometimes. But in our opinion neither a preventer nor a brake should be relied on, and crash gybes can and do happen.
Be safe, stay well, and thanks for lookin' out for fellow sailors!!!!!!
Hell the chafe on the main & flapping of the poled jib ? 10 deg. to port , main in a bit , vang on would have stopped that & speed would go up ?
Sail trim check :-)
Great video. At the beginning I thought I was in a theater with surround sound as the music was epic. Break out the popcorn. Kate looked wore out after the sail adjustments. Is sailing like that as uncomfortable as it looks, or do you all get used to it. Would you all ever consider a catamaran for comfort? Keep having fun and stay safe.
Hey! Thanks. Glad you liked the into, we found the song and said hey lets try it, why not? Reefing is a lot of work. We have all manual winches, but it is good to stay in shape :-) Regarding cats, we have nothing against them, and did consider them when boat shopping, but dollar for dollar and meter to meter, not many have the rig/build and can outperform on average across the full spectrum of conditions. We wouldn't hesitate to take a cat for a sail and try it out though!
Ahora q vayan al cabo de hornos conocerán las olas tremendas, y el paso brenox también es complicado, yo q no iba de capitán me mareaba jajajjaja
Hola Angelica, mucho gusto! Si, gracias :-)
notice your radio on Ch13 (about 21 mins) do you normally keep it there?
Hi Geoff. We are always monitoring 16. The radio has a dual channel feature, the large channel number is a secondary channel. 13 is bridge to bridge, large ships, at least in the US, monitor it as well.
Great video of great sailing! Some questions: Do you have/use a topping lift? Did you set your auto pilot on the compass setting or the wind angle setting? Are you concerned that if you get pooped that water will get into the engine panel, which is low in the cockpit, affecting the key on/off switch and/or the stop button? Thank you for your answers.
Hi Ron. Thanks for helping us make these videos!
We do not have a topping lift, but we could rig one with the staysail halyard if needed. The whisker pole is carbon fiber and pretty light.
We are using the wind angle steering settings in the autopilot. It is set to steer by the True Wind Angle. Lots more to come about the AP :-)
We aren't a fan of the engine panel location and actually want to move things around and be digital/push button only on the pedestal with analog/manual overides below. WIP but pretty far out on the priority list. The speakers are also a structural weak point and should be addressed also IMO.
@@SailingSweetRuca I have a similar set up with my engine panel and worry about it if I am seriously pooped. I am exploring the idea of putting a deck hatch over the panel that would make it water tight when dogged down.
Great video. I love sailing in those conditions! When I need to Reef from a Deep Run, I take down the whisker Pole. Then I basically do a Windward Mark rounding maneuver. Come up to the eye of the wind sheeting in till I come across into hove-to. From home to it's easy to Reeve then you can fall back off and set up for your run
Doesn't the spring type boom vang (kicker) act as a topping lift?
I really wish you would fix the twist in your mainsheet. Lol
Haha! So do we!
@@SailingSweetRuca love watching you guys, and looking forward to more. Sail safe!
Hey Jamie! Thanks a lot. We are impressed that you caught that! It bothers us too 😆
Great video - do you guys use single line or do you go old school with rams horn? Also, your placement of reef points, seems like your reefs are more on the racers side than cruisers? How do you feel about your third reef? Thanks
Hi Brian. Thanks. Cool you are looking in depth. Currently, we use single line for the first reef, leech reef line & tack strop for 2nd, and two line reefing for 3rd (leech and tack lines). The mainsail we have is a long story. It came with the boat and has been modified along the way. The 3rd reef was supposed to be deeper, but instructions weren't followed, hence the add of the 4th reef. We do like the flexibility in the sail plan though. We would rather have more sail and be able to depower than less sail and not enough when needed.
Also, the 3rd reef works really well, we are in it a lot offshore.
@@SailingSweetRuca that set up makes a lot of sense. Single line on first reef when it isn’t super windy and less friction. Wasn’t trying to judge just seemed 3rd reef wasn’t as deep as some I have seen. I am getting a new mainsail and am going with two deep reefs rather than three. Though my sailing plans aren’t as ambitious as the amazing sailing you all are doing! 😃

any time 2 or more boats are sailing, it is a race
Right on!!! :-)
match race
15.8 knots -> 29.3 km/h or 18.2 miles/hour. That's really fast for a sailing boat. The interwebs pretty much agree that the "top speed for a regular cruiser is pretty much 7 knots".
😉
🌬️⛵🌊🤙🏻
As a non sailor ( for now) I have always wondered what a whisker pole was for. You are the first one I have seen use one. Some day I hope to get a better explanation of how and when it is used. Kate I noticed your Michigan T-shirt, Tank -top, what is the significance? I am from Michigan.
Hi Rodney. Glad to have you aboard! It is just there to hold the jib/genoa out when sailing downwind. It makes it less work and is slightly more efficient at certian wind angles. Mostly cruising boats use them, not racers, as a spinnaker is usually faster in comparison. Some boats, like Delos generation Amel's actually even have two whisker poles.
Hey Rodney! I TOO am from Michigan and grew up sailing and racing on lake Erie and have done a few Mackinac Races on both sides. And I do love that beautiful state! It's no ocean, but we still need to respect the Great Lakes! That's for sure! Cheers ✋🏻
@@SailingSweetRuca Thanks for the reply. Never have sailed the Great Lakes, but I have more than a few hours on them fishing for salmon, walleye, perch, steelhead and others. Respect is needed!
Fair winds, following seas!
Yum for sure! 🎣
I am unclear how you put a 3rd reef in without coming up into the wind ?
The boom just needs to angle into the wind enough to take pressure off of the mainsail to bring it down. Having the mainsail on a track and cars helps also.
Thats better .
Ahh, fixed it :-) We trim check all our friends too. Its just what us sailors do :-) Cheers bill!!!!
15 knots, is that only by sails? Or sails + engine? Sorry, I don’t know so much yet. I thought sailing could go only 8 knots….
Hi brian. Yes, by sails alone. It's OK and a good question. When going with the wind and the waves sailboats can gain an extra boost of speed by riding the waves like a surfboard.
@@SailingSweetRuca thank you for your fast reply 🙏 I didn’t know that
Bet you can't beat Ggrandma to the bingo tables
Why do you keep the tender on the deck and not using the davits?
Great question. When offshore there is the possibility of taking a large wave over the boat which could fill the dinghy with water. The small drain plug in the dinghy would not be able to evacuate a large amount of water quickly. This extra water weight and boat motion could overload the davits and cause them to fail.
Also, as a bonus it makes fishing easier :-)
@@SailingSweetRuca plus you can enjoy all the waves that your speed boat make 😉
Wow - honestly, I could use a break-down of step-by-step what is occuring here when you guys put the reef in.... clearly there is a number of lines, outhauls, and halyards being moved around AND you are steering to accomplish something for her to then be able to bring the sail down.... I just feel like that alone is worth a video with pauses so you can point out and highlight what is happening at each moment and what communication is going on to accomplish this in such a strong breeze. What equipment allows this to happen from the comfort of the cabin vs up at the mast etc...
Hi Ian. Glad you enjoyed watching. Making a video like that is a great suggestion. We do have a lot of footage stored up for instructional and more technical stuff in the hopper for when we have some sailing downtime. The more subs we get the more motivated we get to work on videos, so share with your friends ;-)
