Thanks for the video! I just completed this installation here in the USA. The upper cover required the removal of two screws but other than that, the process was identical. I also had to find a very small Allen wrench but with that and the Torx, it was all very easy! Thanks, again. This upgrade is very nice, BTW. Very handy!
Thanks for sharing your experience in the USA. Got a quick question, do you still get the “turn off headlights” alert when in auto after you shut the car off?
@@HelloWorld-vg5yv Interesting question! When the switch is in the AUTO position you do NOT get any message on the console. You just turn off the car, the headlights go out, you take your keys, and leave. If, for some reason, you had the lights in manual mode (the second click, or the click just before AUTO) and you were to turn off the car, the headlight warning message appears on the console. In fact, I think the message would appear if you had left what we call in the USA, the "parking lights" (the first click on the stalk), in the on position and you turned off the car. The installation is pretty easy. I'd make sure you get the plastic enclosure around the steering column back in place carefully. That seemed to be a bit of a hassle to get that shoved under the dashboard, back in the right place, and make it look neat. In retrospect, I would have taken pictures of the entire area before I took it all apart. It also would help if you are younger! I'm getting too old to climb around under the dash. That said, you unplug the original stalk, plug in the new stalk, and you're done. Why this is not standard equipment given that there's nothing beyond changing the stalk that is needed, that is not already in the car, makes little sense to me. And, it's nice. Very convenient. Worth the price. Good luck!
@@cggage Thanks so much, Charles! This is incredibly helpful, and I really appreciate the detailed explanation. It’s great to know that the “turn off headlights” alert only pops up in manual mode-that’s exactly what I was curious about. I’ll definitely take your advice and snap some pictures beforehand to make reassembly easier. And I completely agree-it’s surprising this feature wasn’t standard, considering how simple the swap is! Thanks again for sharing your experience-it’s given me the confidence to tackle this project. Wishing you a fantastic holiday season and all the best!
Thanks. Just done the install myself, very easy, the fiddliest part was refitting the steering wheel cover! Any idea where to get the auto wipers coded in in the UK, preferably around the midlands?
Don’t you need to code the car, too? For the automated headlights? And I think the new stock has a switch for fog lights too! Whereas the old stock didn’t, right?
I’ve been working with Smart cars in one form or another since 1999 and my go to set has always been the Draper Reversible Blade Screwdriver Set (11 Piece, Giving 20 Tip Sizes) Draper part number: 64672. It perfect for any Smart.

Is there a way to just splice two wires together in the stock part, so the lights are just in auto mode all the time?
Do you still get the “turn on headlights” alert when in auto after you shut the car off??
I have the same question. Did you get an answer?

I replaced the stalk and yes the automatic lights work. I wonder if there's a similar fix for the windshield wipers.
There is yes
