"Don't be jealous, you two, you had your time 20 years ago...". Love your sense of humour, which on top of the great info, makes this one of the best sources to learn cinematography! So happy you're posting so often, by the way.
Dude seriously!!! Where have you been all my cinematic life. It’s amazing to see this from the perspective of an industry professional and not a “UA-cam DP” (no disrespect to them). I have learnt so much from this video alone!!
Just wanted to tell you that you've helped me so much, thank you for all the knowledge you're passing on both youtube and on your podcast. lots of love from a malaysian filmmaker
Man I'm happy with UA-cam recommendation. I was looking for a someone who makes content having actual industry experience, use of proper lingo, no BS and higher-level breakdowns. This was really good. Only other one I could find was the Indy Mogul breakdown series with the actual department member I did check out your personal work as well and quite liked it. Good job mate!
Love your stuff Patrick! Follow your podcast also. As a newer DoP, owner op in a smaller market, I do have a question. When shooting such a darker image, how is it monitored on set? Would a monitor lut be used to eye ball or are you capturing 0-90 IRE then crushing?
Hey I just love your videos I get to learn so much value from your videos so thank you but as I am a beginner still learning new things every day and I am sure there would be others here too that are beginners. So can you also explain what type of lighting or the camera lens they are using in the ads that you show us in your video? I just loved your videos.
I would love to see you break down Volvo's commercial "Vintersaga" from a couple of years back. I'm sure there is some DoP shenanigans going on in all of the shots but to me everything looks natural/not lit
I guess the hotspot in 7:07 is by two reasons. First, to recreate the kind of somber and hotspots from this kind of architecture, and second, to give the eye a reference of how dark everything is, since brightness is a perception based in contrast. If all would be dark, the eye would be able to just open the iris to compensate. Is my guess. If somebody have a better understanding would be great to hear it.
Some things are just like "yeah fuck it, let's throw it in there" and everybodys happy. It might not have a particular reason any other than creating interest.
amazing infos as always, thanks ! a little off topic question : what do you use to write on screen like this ? looks to be a great tool for some client review thankks
I think it's a name or something, he mentioned an "Andre" in context so I think it's more likely to be surname. Found some Andre Souffrants but none of them where photographers or DoPs...
I've been trying to figure this out as well, would be great to hear from Patrick or get a link to another video that goes into it. Is it an Ansel Adams thing? Young Perth dp here btw ✌️
I'm not entirely sure what soft hob is but I do recall he mentions this in a previous video where hard light shines on a subjects body to create interesting shadows and textures, but the light is softened (diffused) just for the head to create a pleasing wrap of light.
@@camn85 In this video he mentions it ua-cam.com/video/oVYaQygtF7Y/v-deo.html And also Aputure mention it briefly in this video: ua-cam.com/video/_in8UYLQqIM/v-deo.html
So I think I missed the video/podcast episode when you mentioned the “sofhob/soft hob/saw fob” method. I understand what it is, but what is the name/origin?
Hey Patrick, been loving the content you've been sharing with us! I had a question about how you mention often that exposure on the waveforms are kept really low down, to the point we're skin falls below 50, 40 and even 30 ire. What's the reason for DPs doing this and are they exposing like this in camera or bringing it all down in post? Would appreciate everyone else's insight on this also!
I am not a DP, I do not work in commercials, I am not an expert. This is just my guess. I'm thinking they edit it down in post. If they intentionally underexposed so heavily they would probably run into skin tone and general color problems when they go to color everything. Again, this is a guess, but I think the colorist did the work to bring everything down in this case.
@@candinmuniz3225 thanks for your reply! completely forgot I posted this. Since then I've worked as an assistant DIT on two Netflix productions. From what I've learned from them, DPs love to expose their image in camera like this. They are not afraid of having skin tones be in the 30-40% range (Even as low as 20%!). Hopefully this information is insightful for anyone with the same question I had a year ago!

The best thing about your videos has to be your synopsis/commentary of the plot 😂🤣 so good man!

would love to see a breakdown of Macbeth 2015, it's incredibly shot
Yep, would love that too.
Would absolutely love to see a breakdown of a commercial called Little Drone by Rune Milton for Elkjøp. Loving the videos!
Yes, was just looking for the link for this one, and here it is: vimeo.com/344516989
YESS!!
Check out paul Meyers he was the dp??
Yes Wandering DP do The Little Drone!
Paul Meyers, ASC is my favorite DP, he did an amazing work on that one as always
LOVE YOUR BREAKDOWNS. Thank you!
Sports commercial, One of my favs! Curry 3 - Make That Old
What’s the name of the commercial I wanna watch it
Edit: it’s Volvo XC90 “The Parents”
Hot spot shot in macbeth also highlights the left hand where the diamond would go...
This channel is a whole course in itself!
please do a breakdown of how you light your room! Would absolutely love to see it.
Thanks. Would like to hear more of your guesses on what fixtures and modifiers are being used in each shot.
These breakdowns are so useful Patrick, thanks a lot!
i appreciate the humor on this one! great explanation too. I'm really loving these breakdowns
loved the part, "listen to me." hahahahahah. thank you for giving us DP's great info and light moments while doing it. watching from Kenya.
Very informative. From Kenya as well. Good to see someone from ke over here

that twig snap after threating the talent really sold me 😂😂😂❤⚡📽
Ladies and Germs, we’ve got another one!
Keep ‘em coming Patrick. Ps, I didn’t think they caught the Big Bang on tape either 😂
@Wandering DP the shot at 10:04, what focal length do we think they're using? I really like the z-depth of this shot.
Big bang didnt really happen Patrick?
Yeah, I had a ”is he joking” moment too
Officially, the Big Bang is only a theory. Which means maybe it happened, maybe it didn't.
The "bang" part is metaphorical
@@leafXIV that's not what a theory means in science.

How do YOU know this diamond company didn't just instead spend their VFX budget on time machine R&D and film the Big Bang in real life?

I don’t even know what this video is going to be about but I’ve already liked and commented cause I know it’s gonna be dope 🔥
Is there a link to the commercial itself?
I have a question. When shooting in dark areas, does the DP still shoot in LOG ?
Always log.
Would love to know what you use to draw and the software you’re using for it!
Great video, and a totally silly question... What app are you using the markup the scene? That is super helpful! Keep them coming!

What is Andre softhub method? and what's his actual last name? I couldn't find it on google Softhub? Sophob?
Do you guys know of a page, channel, or website where they post commercials .would appreciate it
Does anyone know if that setting was one of the painted churches in Bukovina, Romania? It looks like one.
So where can I find the commercial? :)
If you'll find it, share the link, please
I think someone is down in the jungle reflecting light from a mirror on the cave shot... thevspeckn of light between the two guys

I am curious about that diagonal light in the background that goes through your head; Is that intentional? Love the videos.

Andre Sophod? Sofod? Soffhod? What's his last name?
Sofhob. But it's an invention from Patrick. Stands for Soft On Face, Hard On Body.

Someone explain why the L of the room is good again?
Is it for the purpose of depth?
@@hudonedem8517 yeah i think so
It looks more interesting than shooting straight into the wall. The L adds depth and shape vs just flatness
The corner. Gives you the most distance behind your subject.
Gives leading lines in your frame too
