I'm 71 and have seen more than 100 live music performances since 1968. Saw Janis twice in1969. No performer ever came close to Janis for energy and magic on stage!
She put her whole being into it - voice, body, heart, and soul.
I'm still in love with Janis and miss her.
That's stories you tell your grandchildren ❤️
I envy you, I seriously believe I was born to late!! I was born in 1961 but have a brother and sister 12 and 10 years my senior - one a hippy the other a mod. I grew up listening to their music and never found anything in my own era to match it!!
lucky man.
Janis was the GOAT.
Amen.
Kris Kristofferson wrote this song, he said he cried after he heard Janis’ rendition! Tells a soulful story.
I can only imagine. Writing a song that is cool on it's own (I like his version) and then you get to hear somebody else turn it into a masterpiece. Wow.
Never knew that! Thank you 🙌
Loved.❤
The Rubber duck...ever hear of a duck can't swim ?......Convoy !!
@@ricshaffer4009 Yeah, didn’t that go to #1 for a year and headline an Oscar winning lineup of singers in a movie? Jeez!
WTF does a trucking song by CW McCall have to do with Kris K or Janis J???
The 60s were great because artists flowed in and out of different genres, and this is really a country song with soul flavor. There is something deeply American about this tune.
You’re right about artists flowing in and out that’s what made American music so great at the time and I miss those days and that America……
The FIRST FEMALE ROCK STAR!! Her singing was pure, raw, gutsy, hard lovin', hard livin'..she put it ALL out there! She set the Bar for ALL female Rockers who came after her-even for men, too. Has NOT been duplicated, she's THE GOAT...still!!! SAD she left us too soon 💔🕊 Thankful for the Music she gave us.
# FOREVER JANIS 💔❤️🔥💫
One of and still the best.
I won't begrudge her that, but Grace Slick was famous before Janis.
White Rabbit was on the charts before Janis performed at Monterrey.
First actual Rock and Roll star was probably Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Predates even Chuck Berry.
Bigger in England due to American radio segregation in the 50's
@@bartstarr100 Respectfully, I considered there were some popular women prior to Janis, but not 'stars' to match the caliber Janis reached or maintained.✌🏼
Janis is a force and a one of a kind. San Francisco produced both of the two earliest female rock stars. Janis and Grace Slick came onto their own within a couple of months of one another.
This is the second song to be a posthumously released #1 single. Sad to think about how many other hits she could have had.
I thought "Me and Bobby McGee" was her only #1 single - what was the other one? I always considered her more of an albums artist than a singles artist. I agree, we'll never know how much more great music died with her.
@cazgerald9471 The second posthumously released number #1 single by anyone. The first was Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding in 1968.
@@chicagojon1972 gotcha
She sang like this in her 20's. Can you imagine?
As you probably already know this song was written by Kris Kristofferson. A couple of my all-time favorite lyrics are in this song:
“Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose” and “But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday”
Love how you gentlemen are diving into rock history. Classic song. Thanks.
"..trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday.." this lyric has made millions cry.
This is from her later band, Full Tilt Boogie Band. Her earlier band was called Big Brother and the Holding Company.
This song is so iconic for her. People would just spontaneously start singing this together all the time when I was younger. It was everywhere.
And I certainly wouldn't want you to miss out on the way that she sings when she's pulled back - it's absolutely lovely and the words are incredible. That line about the windshield wipers slappin time while they play the acoustic guitar and just passed the time singing the blues - all of that just fit so perfectly.
But you guys, you have to check out the studio recording of her George Gershwin cover with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Summertime.
To me it's one of her greatest recordings. There is stuff that she's doing with her voice and raspy overtones that she harmonizes with herself at the end? It's mind-blowing. And it's a great vibe and everything about it kicks ass. It's really pulled back but it has so much pain and soul in it. It is totally next level.
Lordy ! Some seriously accomplished musicians involved in that work of art .. Piano player was fire, guitar player dyanamite and the bass guitar was magic
There's a song "American Pie" about this history of Rock Music. He has a few lines about Janis Joplin:
"I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away"
- She was very important, but was extinguished way too soon.
One of the last things she recorded before her death. Written by the legendary Kris Kristofferson. He & Janis had a brief relationship in the 60's & remained friends thereafter.
When he heard this, right after her passing, he cried & said "Its her song now". Even now he still gets emotional when speaking of her.
Btw, back in the 90's I was fortunate to meet Mr. Kristofferson..very gentlemanly & down to earth. And so soft spoken in that unmistakable voice.
Take a minute to Google him & his astounding life.
One of the best songwriters of the 20th century, Rhodes Scholar, helicopter pilot & Army Captain...gave up teaching English Literature at West Point to go to Nashville & get into music...took a job as a janitor in a recording studio to start & ended up of one of the Outlaw Country pioneers along with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings.
One of the most respected artists in any music genre.
Oh, & a movie star too. Been in many movies & starred with Barbra Streisand in "A Star Is Born", one of the biggest hits of the 70's. What a career, what a life, what a man.

Excellent summary, although I'm sure there's a lot more.

Thank you. And oh, yeah, even more. But I figured I'd blathered on long enough.🤗
@@deborahcornell171 I have an excellent Highwaymen DVD where Kris goes into detail about how he met Johnny Cash in the studio. The studio manager didn't like Kris, and tried to keep him away from JC. But Johnny told the manager if Kris wasn't there then he wouldn't be recording there. The manager relented (hated Kris). Johnny and him became great friends after Kris landed the helicopter on his front yard.
I have a similar DVD with the Highwaymen that does not contain that information. The one with this snippet is from Europe and won't play on my North American DVD player. But it does play on my PC.
Take care.
I watched a documentary about Kris a few years ago, I was flicking through channels and couldn't find anything else to watch. I ended up absolutely enthralled!!
@@dellafenton2417 He's an amazing person.
My favorite by her Janis rip way to young departing us
I’m 53 years old I grew up listening to Janice because she was my mother’s favorite artist and she was very present in our home musically! She was such a force to be reckoned with
My mom raised my sisters and I in Janice too! I’m 26😊 my daughter is turning 7 soon and sings along too ❤
She tears this up best version I've ever heard
Janis' version of this song is the definitive one. We missed out on so much great music by her early death.
Janis rocks! "Me and Bobby McGee" was a number one hit in the U.S. for Janis Joplin in 1971 but she died before it was released so she didn't get to enjoy its success. For that it pairs well with "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding from 1967, the first ever posthumous single to top the charts in the U.S. Macabre references aside, Joplin and Redding tore it up at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, along with Jimi Hendrix and The Who.
Janis died in October 1970 just a few days after recording this song for her album "Pearl" - it was released in January 1971, as was the album - "Me and Bobby McGee" was her only #1 charting single. There was one song on the album which she hadn't yet recorded the vocal, the backing track was included on the album as an instrumental.
She is a true LEGEND.
Kris Kristofferson was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and became one of the great American songwriters. This came out after Janis had passed away.
I was a young girl when this hit the radio. My eldest sister had her albums and I was so very happy hearing Janis singing in the car! Such an amazing woman....God bless her, then and always! 😽💋🎶
My favorite song of hers!💥
It's goosebumps everytime with this one.
This was a big hit for her on the radio. Many of her songs that we love so much now never were that big on the radio, as I recall. Radio play was key for 45 RPM sales and contributed to LP sales. Remember, this was AM radio then. This song was on the radio a lot.
Dudes so excited for this one what a song Love you
Gentlemen ~ Congratulations on playing this "Ultra-Classic!" Love that "Church Organ" too.
BTW: Whenever I am in my car and this song comes on, I usually wind up speeding by the end of it, just like I do when "L.A. Woman" by The Doors comes on ... GLORIOUS!
Hope you haven't gotten ticketed but probably worth it. :-)
@@steveullrich7737 I have been lucky so far. Cheers!
Amen, I just tell ‘em I was singing along with an angel!
The rock world lost a lot of young, talented musicians 1969-71: Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Duane Allman...
I can’t believe I missed this 9 months ago. Awesome song and reaction!
I have always loved the Honky Tonk feel of this song; another great reaction, gentlemen ❤
Janis started out in acoustic folk and blues, her voice and guitar. You kind of hear that here.
When this woman sang she gave chunks of her soul. Nobody will ever come close to her - EVER.
The great Kris Kristofferson. He also wrote Sunday Morning Coming Down for Johnny Cash. One of Cash's best and my personal favorite. Janis' voice was perfect for this song.
Hit the studio version of Summertime. It's incredible.
I love this song, namly because I loved hearing my mother sing it. I'd come home from school to hear her belting this out before I got anywhere the house.
Janis Would Record This Track In Just One Take,, Unfortunately Passing Away Only 3 Days Later,, Janis Joplin "Mercedes Benz" (R.I.P. 🙏❤️)
One of my favorites. ❤️✌️
Yep....The one and only.....
Shared Janis with my now 25 yo daughter when she was in HS….another great tune from way back that is timeless…thx for giving it a listen! You guys are the best! I peek in daily to see what wonderful tune you’ve cooked up…thank you, again!
This was my mom’s favorite album. 😊 She wore out a couple of CDs. We played it for her regularly the last few couple of years of her life, she had Alzheimer’s but never forgot the words to her favorite songs 💕
Great organ work at the end.
I also saw JJ in 1969 at the San Diego sports arena. She's still my favorite.
This was recorded right just before she sadly died. What a loss to music
Pure raw spirituality…
He's one of the queens of Blues
Band Was Big Brother & The Holding Company. Janice One Of A Kind!!
Put On Your Seatbelts For This MUST HEAR Powerhouse My Music Lovin' Brothers,, Alabama Shakes "Don't Wanna Fight" (Live From Capitol Studio A) TRUST ME On This One!!!
She was first discovered at Woodstock 69'
Actually at Monterey Pop Festival, i believe in 1967
I LOVE YOU JANIS !
I like her sone "Little Girl Blue" that fits a lot of her personak life.
The band was the Full Tilt Boogie Band.
The sweetest liquor voice ever
Yes has a new single released today called, "Cut From The Stars. " New song from the legendary Progressive Rock band, YES. Their new album will be released in May 2023.
One of her best from the last and I think best album. Just getting it together and gone...
if you want to to see Joplin at her best ,watch the videos of janis Joplin live in Toronto of the song " I got Dem OL' Cosmic Blues Again Mama " and " Cry Baby "
This was the last and best band that backed her, the band she had been searching for and this was her last album, Pearl. She died with one song unfinished. On the album it is an instrumental titled Buried Alive in the Blues.
Bought album. ❤🎉😊
🔥🔥🔥
What an incredible bass line WOW!!!!!
Janice, being from Port Authur, Tx on the border of Louisiana….she had the Texas Blues blended with Cajun Soul.
Kris was not only a legendary Songwriter, but a great actor. I think y’all would appreciate the work of “The Highwaymen” Legends - Kris, Johnny Cash, WillieNelson and Waylon Jennings. Anything live.
My favorite song❤😊
This was her biggest charting hit- and after she passed. 😢
please do more Janis studio versions or lives that sounds like studio versions, I can leave links if it helps 😁 I'll be more than happy to supply
I recommend her version of "Summertime". It's amazing!
PINK also sings this Song and She Awesome❤
It seems like "Pearl" was a more polished album than her earlier work
This was written by kris Kristofferson who became a musical artist on his own after serving in Vietnam is a helicopter pilot
Long backstory on this. This was the first popular pop song written by a man (Kris Kristofferson) from a woman's point of view. At the time Kristofferson and Janis Joplin were lovers and Kristofferson has called her the love of his life. At the time she recorded this he had no idea and they were on separate coasts. They talked by phone that evening after she recorded and she said she had a surprise present for him (I think it may have been his birthday?) when she got back (the surprise was the song). He woke up in the morning to the news of her death and was crushed. I think it was a month or so later that he found out what the surprise present was when this song was released and hit the airwaves. He has been married since, but he never got over her.
GREAT SONG...!
Check out "Ode To Billy Joe" ~ Bobbie Gentry.
So glad you're diving into her studio work. One that was widely disparaged at it's release is the Kosmic Blues album. It was made at a time when there was a major blues influx to rock and incorporated a brass band. The Kosmic Blues Band is the group that performed with her at Woodstock. I would love to hear your take on (in my opinion) the incredible I Got Dem Ol Kosmic Blues Again Mama album. My personal favorite is As Good As You've Been To This World. It's one rockin' piece of music. Thanks for keeping the music alive guys.
I like your reviews because they are very uninhibited and reflect both of your moods. Everyone feels it differently but you both like the music you are reviewing. It's good to hear different opinions, although both like the music. Thanks for the (I feel so) sincere opinion. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
Her pop hit.......got to have radio play back in the day and this style got her played
Riding with the brothers another great selection! Let me strap myself in and I'm ready to roll!!! Love you guys channel we need more Eric Clapton!! find the live version of..Tell the truth... from the crossroads festival, Little Wing live with Sheryl Crow or River of Tears live.. 3 tremendous songs live and just church like, soulful yet explosive, got it all..
This song was on her last album. It was released a year (1971) after she passed. The band could have been "the cosmic blues band" I have an old album withem on cover.
The songwriter played Whistler in Blade!
You have to listen to Cry Baby ,it's killer blues. The whole Pearl album is killer.✌️
ZZ TOP "Blue Jean Blues"...Nuff Said.
RIP❤
Live some Janis
Kris Kristofferson wrote a song called Why Me Lord. Listen to the one where he tells the story of the song.
Legendary her Woodstock performance 1969, because her live voice is more blues, soul and rock (once of the first femal?). That's the first time that I heard the name JJ as a child.
A few days ago I saw her last interview in the Dick Cavett show 1970 /not known so worth! To Love Somebody + Piece Of My Heart!
The versatile Kris Kristofferson, singer,so gwriter, and actor and Rhodes scholar.....who served In Vietnam as a chopper pilot.....
He volunteered for Vietnam, but they turned him down. They wanted him at the Academy so he got out instead.
This rules
Love this song, and album. Would really like to see you react to Mercedes Benz !
WOW... She is one of a kind. To this day I'm still feeling her loss when I hear her music. Although no one can replace Janis (The Little Texan Ball Of Fire) there are a couple of blues greats that teamed up to give us blues on fire...I recommend checking out Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa

Both artists have incredible solo careers, I've watched them perform individually & both paired up with heavy hitters of the music industry but when these two pair up it's pure magic as they not only compliment each other, they bring out the best of each other.
Being a musician almost all of my life I can honestly say the repetitive nature of "The Blues" is a challenge of a musician's skill to make it come alive with emotion. Beth, a two time winner of "Best Blues Female Vocalist", will draw you into her performance not just with here technically flawless vocals but also with her incredibly mesmerizing voice & her rich story telling ability makes you believe & feel every word that she sings.
Joe, who started his career at the age of 12 opening for BB King is one of the premiere guitarists in the music industry. For me his guitar work in this performance was more than just exceptional as he took a simple melodic scale & made his vintage mid 60s Fender Telecaster "SING" with intense emotion while the beat of the drummer (Anton Fig) pushed Joe's skill to an unbelievable level. After his solo, in the background, you can see Joe give Anton a nod of appreciation.
None of these musicians are slouches, Anton Fig Is a session drummer having worked with Kiss, Bob Dylan, Peter Frampton, Billy Squire, Cyndi Lauper & more.
Kris kristofferson wrote Bobby McGee .he was a struggling song writer ,his release of the song did not do well . as Kris tells it “he met Bob Dylan at a party ,bob loved the song and suggested that Janis Joplin would bring the song “Dylan thought “some respectable numbers some rasp some soul and so as you just heard in that reaction, that happened . Janis recorded the song as a surprise for kris after having met Kris with Dylan’s intro .Janis hit it off with kris in a flirtatious way “kris was a good looking guy .but Janis overdosed before she presented the song to him recorded her surprise taken by her death. This was seen in a documentary I watched with kris holding back tears ,as he explained that the song went to number one on the charts only the second time in history going to number one posthumously .So Janis’s gift to kris of his song was something that broke his and Dylan’s hearts .kris said that soon the song was everywhere recorded by country and folk and rock artists and kris for many years could not listen to the song without tears .
"i'd trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday". that line tears at my heart. if you want some pure janis vocals, listen to the last thing she recorded which was the a cappella "mercedes benz". some time ago someone tried putting it to music and the result was a disaster,so don't fall for that one.
I had an aunt that used to knock this out of the park. 😎👍
As I recall from hearing the comment Kris made, he said the song now belonged to her.
Iconic
It's a great song. The Grateful Dead version is good too.
Big brother and the holding company
You guys REALLY need to check out Beth Hart live from Paradiso doing "Am I The One" it's Janis channeling through her 🤘
Beth Hart is a huge talent. I prefer any song over Paradiso- at least do not watch as a first introduction to Beth. You should know about her life and such first that Lead her to one magnificent song writer and vocalist. She has done a cover album of Led Zeppelin that is awsome.
@@mstewart109 Paradiso was my introduction to Beth, from there it has been a FANTASTIC RIDE! I remember seeing her on Star Search many years ago, and thought she was on her way but lost track of her after that. Was reintroduced to her about 5 years ago, and read about her downfall. I'm really glad she pulled herself out of the hell hole she was in. What a success story! ❤
Yeah Studio
Gordon Lightfoot has a nice cover of this tune.
No one can compare to Janis but Pink sings a really good cover of this song. Worth checking out.
you guys should do Got Dem Ol Cosmic Blues album its a great one!
Rite Kentucky ❤
Cry Baby- studio version is perfection , live in Toronto you get to see a bit of who she was inside
