I don't know how much power the lifting motors draw, but moving this adjustable desk around the shop as a work surface makes me wonder if it could be powered by a small battery. Considering how many times you would be operating the desk, charge might last for quite a long time. *Some dis-assembly required*
It is not "just" a piece of furniture, it is a piece of art. Your art. Sure, there are people who consider this a craft and therefore "lesser". I am not one of those people... this is art. I love the feel of it.
It's beautiful, and I love it! Honestly, I think I'm just esoteric enough that this is the kind of thing I would have, just to prominently display the one non-reference book I own, as a conversation piece for my guests to have a chuckle over. I would even go so far as to install a spotlight in the ceiling above it, on its own separate dimmer switch.
The idea is great. So many people watch videos to relax or learn skills. Whatever you build, as long as it is well recorded, comments are educational with a pinch of humour, you're showing woodworking techniques, solve problems and the final product is good quality, it is worth watching. Regardless if this is a one book' bookshelf (for a seasonal reader), 1 cup' coffee table (for a lonely person), 1 shoe' shoe rack (for disable person), or one shirt' wardrobe.
Architects would call this a "folly". something made for whimsey that doesnt have its original intention of holding people or things but can still be seen as architecture. So I think this is a furniture folly. New Category. Thanks Shaun Boyd. And there is a real place for follies like this. Does it need a purpose? Maybe.... but it doesn't have to be serious. Fun can be a purpose. Great bookcase palate cleanser/folly.
I can imagine this at an exhibition, accompanied by a lengthy essay about it`s standing for your singularity/ the loneliness of the carpenter´s decisionmaking or any other word salad possible. But I love the design for sure.
you should make the two sides of the book with a hinge and springs (like two sided door), so a range eof books could fit and it would be closed when there is no book.
I just LOVE IT. I mean all the personnality this piece shows. The courage, the craftmanship the "fuck you, that s who I am" ... man LOVE IT! Great piece of furniture Shaun!
Another dumb idea: have you ever done a "palate cleanser" project using pallets as the material? A "Pallet Cleanser", if you will 😉 Sorry. Thanks for the great video! Loved how it turned out 😁
The one book shelf is a hilarious idea. Maybe a charging table for your phone that is a pyramid with a huge footprint, but only has room for one phone charger on top?
My first question, that I’ve been meaning to ask, is when and why did you and Chris stop sharing a shop? Was there another move I missed between then and now?
I think you’ve missed almost a year of content. Shaun moved house due to a job offer for his wife and reactivated his channel with new content - the same one he used before teaming up with Chris. This one! Having worked together and, despite not being physically together as before, it didn’t make sense to break away entirely from the content they had created, especially regarding the plans for building furniture pieces. It seems he’s moving again. I can only imagine it’s for a new and better offer, and I hope it’s for the best.
Yep, you got it! Another move for another (better) opportunity for my wife. Luckily my work is fairly mobile, except for the moving thousands of pounds of machinery haha!
The "book" case is beautiful. And I can't help but agree with rhkips that I really think it also needs its own spotlight too. Another great project video with some really great ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Well it's not dumb if it works. And it works really well. And if it doesn't work any more, you can always turn it into a great looking standing speaker system.
3.20 in to the video and I too want a ‘current book shelf’ at the side of my sofa, for the book I’m reading right now… right I will watch the rest now…thanks
Do you know what's another name for dumb furniture just like this one? A literal piece of art. No use, no apparent sense, barely any functionality, and yet because it exists the world is now a little bit better.
Who has stopped in the middle of the day and thought a blurry acid trip wheat field would look good on my wall? Did Van Gogh think his "dumb" idea was a good pallet cleanser? Art doesn't make sense...never has and never will. For most, it certainly doesn't make business sense. Creating art make your heart happy and if your lucky can enrich others. I, for one, am enriched! Great work as always. =)
It’s great. You thought of it so made it. Why the hell not. Enjoy the process. The changeable custom inserts could also accommodate an insert for a light so it becomes a free standing lamp, or an insert with a speaker. Possibilities are endless!!…..oh, and by the way, you forgot to lay on it
Instead of one book (which I would recommend you use it to hold "The Book"-an illustrated book to restart humanity after the apocalypse), what if you used this as a phone stand, and then the one book is the local phonebook/yellow pages? Then, it technically has a use even if phonebooks are obsolete.
Why did you make it? Because you could! That's all the reason you need. It's a fun project. Too bad you couldn't stand on top of it for the ending. Bill
Betcha a bunch of people would want one for their bible or for the book that changed their life, there are alot of romantics that would spend money on this...
@@shaunboydmadethis Yeah im telling you this could be a hot ticket item in churches definitly something alot of people could want, this is a good idea cool build like always buddy
I love it and would actually have it in my house! But I suppose given I am a religious man, one book is more important than all, thus I have a purpose for a ‘one book bookshelf’! Have missed your content due to my feed not pulling you up the order! Keep up the good work and best of luck getting the new shop in order.
I would place that by my favourite reading spot maybe add a light and the book that I’m reading at the moment is what would be in that spot beautiful piece of work
Reall inspired me, didn't wait for that awesome result but it does it's one job really really well. I'll look more into executing my dumb ideas into real life/
Let's take this idea 1 step further! If you make a matching piece that also holds one book, you can bookend a full blown book shelf with these 2 accent pieces. Bookshelf bookends for your bookshelf!
I have a primal urge to toss dollar bills at your dust collector hose. That being said. I love the design, and i know it's not the sort of thing you do, but I'd love to see some videos on the progress of the shop!
I love the dumb book shelf! I think it's hilarious that the book you chose is a repair manual! But the look and style of the shelf is amazing! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent. Good luck on your move and new location.

This is a true book shelf. Anything else is a books shelf.
Art for art sake, is its own reward.
It is not "just" a piece of furniture, it is a piece of art. Your art. Sure, there are people who consider this a craft and therefore "lesser". I am not one of those people... this is art. I love the feel of it.
Thank you! Really appreciate that.
It's beautiful, and I love it!

Haha, love it. We think alike.
Not dumb at all. This is perfect if you have a reading spot in your hose. It just hold the current book you are working on.
Or your Kindle, which in my case is the only book I ever have in my apartment anymore.
The idea is great. So many people watch videos to relax or learn skills. Really appreciate that! Thanks!
Honestly one of my favorite bookshelf designs I've seen. I want it in my office.
This is actually sick! So creative. Nice work man!
Brilliant idea and I really like the series...keep on building on it!
I think this is a great accent piece, and would not be surprised if you get multiple orders for it. As always, awesome project, great video!
Perfect for sitting on our throne.
The design, execution and your humour are all perfect!
Weirdest idea for a single book. A pile of ashes and the charred spine from the book "Fahrenheit 451"
Haha, now THAT is weird. Love it!
Architects would call this a "folly". something made for whimsey that doesnt have its original intention of holding people or things but can still be seen as architecture. I think that might be my new favorite furniture genre!
That would have been snazzy! Maybe on version 2.
I love this so much
It's called a Bookshelf, not a Booksshelf.. It was never intended for more than one book.. You finally made what was meant to be made all along. 😮😊
Haha, exactly!
Builds like this are fun to watch. Keep em coming.
Love it! And the deliberation over the choice of book, priceless 🤣
I just LOVE IT. I mean all the personnality this piece shows. The courage, the craftmanship the "fuck you, that s who I am" ... man LOVE IT!
Great piece of furniture Shaun!
It is all about the details and this project looks great.
A one book shelf is a great idea. I holds the one book you are reading rather than a coffee table full of books you are trying to read.
Love your bookshelf. Perfect for a tiny home. ❤❤
Another dumb idea: have you ever done a "palate cleanser" project using pallets as the material? A "Pallet Cleanser", if you will 😉
Sorry. Thanks for the great video! Loved how it turned out 😁
Haha, now we're talking! Great idea!
This made my day. Thanks, Shaun. Happy Holidays.
The Sophie’s choice line really got me 😂
I love these unconventional unique builds 👏 keep going please
Awesome. Might be a good project to have a book shelf just for my LotR trilogy..
Dude, this is art and furniture. The concept of "dumb" doesn't apply. It's a beautiful piece and youtube content.
That's a rather elegant looking book-shelf.
I dig everything about this video. A book shelf. Very nice.
The one book shelf is a hilarious idea.
Maybe a charging table for your phone that is a pyramid with a huge footprint, but only has room for one phone charger on top?
Stunning, I'm going to have to make one for myself.

"Less dramatic and more dumb" is actually way more enticing to me lol
EDIT: A bookshelf that holds custom bookshelf inserts is hilarious
HEY ITS THE RABBIT MANUALLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This is best bookshelf that has ever existed!
As a Dyslexic, I find this is a perfect bookshelf ❤
Well it's not dumb if it works. And it works really well. And if it doesn't work any more, you can always turn it into a great looking standing speaker system.
you just gotta love this guy.
Perfect bathroom bookshelf. I really want to make one now
3.20 in to the video and I too want a ‘current book shelf’ at the side of my sofa, for the book I’m reading right now… right I will watch the rest now…thanks
Wow! Love it!
"Sometimes dumb is good" no trueer statement has been said
Sometimes, you just have to get an idea out of your head. I find just doing it gets that done for me.
Do you know what's another name for dumb furniture just like this one? A literal piece of art.
No use, no apparent sense, barely any functionality, and yet because it exists the world is now a little bit better.

Yassss, the dumb rhymes are back!
Looks like a small clock face could be added to the top front panel for a modern floor clock effect. Thanks for the video.
The one book should've been the McMaster-Carr catalogue.
It’s great. You thought of it so made it. Why the hell not. Enjoy the process. The changeable custom inserts could also accommodate an insert for a light so it becomes a free standing lamp, or an insert with a speaker. Possibilities are endless!!…..oh, and by the way, you forgot to lay on it
A fellow router lover 😁I've built most of my stuff with a router (table saw does get a look in, but mostly using routers) Love the book shelf!
Thank you Shaun! It's a beautiful One-Book Bookshelf. Perhaps silly, perhaps flippant even. Thank you..
Instead of one book (which I would recommend you use it to hold "The Book"-an illustrated book to restart humanity after the apocalypse), what if you used this as a phone stand, and then the one book is the local phonebook/yellow pages? Then, it technically has a use even if phonebooks are obsolete.
I'd love more "dumb" ideas to be made
Why did you make it? Because you could! That's all the reason you need. It's a fun project. Too bad you couldn't stand on top of it for the ending.
Bill
I can confirm... the 2nd shelf for the inserts.. is in fact, funny
We definitely need the big book case for the other books and holders
Churches would love this shelf
I'd like to see Arcade cabinet built out of a slab.
Now you just gotta finish that car!
There used to be a father and son team on a PBS show that mostly used only routers. The name of the show escapes me. I think it was during the 80's?
Betcha a bunch of people would want one for their bible or for the book that changed their life, there are alot of romantics that would spend money on this...
Yeah, that was kind of my thought process throughout the build. A lot of people have one book they really cherish.
@@shaunboydmadethis Yeah im telling you this could be a hot ticket item in churches definitly something alot of people could want, this is a good idea cool build like always buddy

Hilariously dumb! Love the idea of the second bookshelf for the other books and inserts😂. Thanks as always for sharing!
It's a beautiful piece!
Definitely funny.
That's a really great palate cleanser.
What, no lying down on this piece?? Awesome stuff, as always....
These small things are posible not that "dumb" - they are great for a small display area in a small shop.
I would place that by my favourite reading spot maybe add a light and the book that I’m reading at the moment is what would be in that spot beautiful piece of work
The one bookshelf looks gorgeous. I'm pretty sure this is going to become a thing. You should patent it.
All that for a Bentley manual?
My dude. 🙌
...but it looks SOOOOO GOOD!!
It may be just one book, but it has the MOST BEAUTIFUL HOME that JUST ONE BOOK has EVER had!! ^5!! (high 5!) 😁
If you have a such a place for one book it's not a book shelf but a shrine or an altar.
Reall inspired me, didn't wait for that awesome result but it does it's one job really really well. I'll look more into executing my dumb ideas into real life/

So much for Shaun always lays on his projects... 😇 That was dumb, and I loved it.
Haha, I have my limits. This one was just too sketchy!
Absolutely love it 👏👏👏
You should name this piece "Ockham's razor" - after all it is called a book case and not a books' case ;)
If it wasn't so flippin expensive to ship to the UK, I'd buy it.
You really ought to put "Woodworking for dummies" in that bookshelf.
I would love to have it!
Very nice as usual Mr Boyd. Think I'm gonna build [a much sloppier] one just to try. And hey, nice book bro!
Dang, I wish you and Chris had done one more project/video together before the departure!
Genius!!
Dat wiggling hose! 😜
I have a primal urge to toss dollar bills at your dust collector hose. That being said. I love the design, and i know it's not the sort of thing you do, but I'd love to see some videos on the progress of the shop!
Haha, it really does give me a weird feeling every time it wiggles like that. Not sure I'll do much about the new shop, but maybe!
The whole time i kept thinking how is he going to lay on such a small piece at the end of the video!! Personally, I love this piece
Haha, I have my limits! This one was definitely too sketchy.
Dude, this is a great idea honestly. I think think of a few reasons for a 1 book shelf shelf.
Taschen will be contacting you shortly to order a thousand.
It's still pretty cool. Is the rabbit going to make the move with you?
cool build! can I buy the course now and order templates later?
An excellent choice of book for an excellent generation of VW. (MK2 GTI Owner here)
Sweet! Now just have to put all that reading to use.
This is so dumb... I love it!! :D
I actually kind of want to build this! 😂
Awesome build, Shaun! So, if you want to share this, where are you moving to?
I have just put the second coat of poly on a floating shelf big enough to hold two coffee cups to mount on the wall by my recliner.
Haha, perfect!
I love the dumb book shelf! I think it's hilarious that the book you chose is a repair manual! But the look and style of the shelf is amazing! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent. Good luck on your move and new location.
Thank you!
